What Obama's reading on the Vineyard

Obama plans to read five books on vacation, the White House said.
Obama plans to read five books on vacation, the White House said.

(CNN) - The White House has said President Obama plans to play golf and spend time with his family during his week away from Washington.

But it appears the president also wants to get some reading in: a lot of it.

White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters Monday Obama's vacation reading list comprises five books, including tomes from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and historian David McCullough.

In all, the books on Obama's list total around 2,300 pages - meaning the president would have to read close to 300 pages each day of his week-long vacation to polish off the list.

Should Obama prefer to listen to the books on his iPod, four are available in audio format with a total running time of nearly 40 hours.

Full list according to the White House:

"The Way Home" by George Pelecanos
"Hot, Flat, and Crowded" by Thomas Friedman
"Lush Life" by Richard Price
"Plainsong" by Kent Haruf
"John Adams" by David McCullough

I hope that President Obama does, as Matt suggests, read "Atlas Shrugged." It's glorification of rich, powerful technocrats and industrialists as the saviors of all mankind is so laughable that it could provide some much-needed entertainment. On the other hand, the idea that modern Americans could take its message of complete disregard for the suffering of others seriously might be disturbing.

    How about these little tidbits:

-He's setting up a secret interrogation unit, for interrogating 'terrorists'. While encouraging the Justice Dept. to go after the CIA.

-Turns out he knew the Scotish were gonna release that terrorist. He told Qaddafi not to throw a big party. Ooops, guess Mummar isn't as awe-struck by Obama as all you libs are.

-Afghanistan is getting worse, proving that America's enemies know that with libs in charge, America is weak.

-Won't read that healthcare bill that he just knows all America needs. Guess he's upset that we all just don't take his word for it.

Gee, with his new secret interrogation unit, and his ACORN squads trying to disrupt real Americans from letting their voices be heard, I'd almost expect one of Obama's books to be Mein Kampf.

Perhaps, if he can read that many pages in a week, President Obama can show our Congressmen and women how to read legislation before they vote on it ...

Has anyone noticed how persons of the left persuasion rely almost exclusively on ridicule, insult, insinuation and misdirection to make their case? We are still being fed this c.r.a.p. that it’s ALL Bush’s fault and that conservatives are all idiots. Never mind that the Democrat-ruled Congress has been making laws and passing porkulus bills for the last decade. Never mind it’s been the Obama administration for about six months already. I guess the libs figure they’ve made up their minds how things are and they don’t want to be confused by any facts. Hey Mr. President: read the d.a.m.n. health care bill you’re trying to stuff to us! Read where the $787 billion went that you practically threw out the window! And what’s with all this vacation and ‘round the world tours? Who do you think you are, G.W. Bush?

Mr. Obama – great job, I hope you enjoy your brief vacation. Funny the poor people who are posting like Mr. Obama isn't highly educated and well-read and as tho he has spent most of his time in office at a ranch in Texas ........ guys, you can't copy-cat the anti-Bush posts and expect it to work (LOL) – you are going to have to think up something new and clever all by your lonesomes...

Why is that such a surprising number of pages? A reasonably fast reader can put away 90-100 pages an hour on works of fiction. It only took 8 hours to read the final mammoth Harry Potter book – if you enjoy what you are reading, the pages fly by!

Read this book: "Don't Chicken Out On Health Care And Suck Up To The Right Wing Republican Politicians Who Have Good Government Run Health Care And Don't Want Anyone Else To Have It". Author: Me.

Wow!!! That's really impressive and important...most of us trash can only read 2,300 words in that amount of time....well we right-wing extremists anyway.....Maybe he could read a couple of the "bills" we've been hearing a lot of "misinformation" on lately...

If the reporter who wrote this story is unable to read 300 pages a day, then they need to quit their job.

300 pages a day? That's pretty doable, as anyone during the final months of college know.

Maybe instead of waisting his time reading books he should sit down and read the health care bill. It's shorter than the total of his books. IMPEACH OBAMA NOW!!!! He's ruining this great Country along with the Communist News Network (CNN) that kowtows to everything Obama does.

A president who knows how to read. Very refreshing.

Just keep doing what you're doing, Mr. President. Last time I checked, we were in a state of economic recovery with the Dow sniffing around 10,000 faster than I'm sure anyone would have expected. As far as this sensible citizen is concerned, you're doing an excellent job.

The media influences perception. Because often they tell lies to your vision. By grandfather once said believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. I suggest you all live by it.

Wow!!! I bet all these distasteful insults aimed at “OUR” president make these people feel really warm and cozy inside. Or maybe it makes these geniuses feel smarter than the average “American” to trudge against the grain. At any rate I hope it fills the huge void left in their collective heads. Stop crying!

I can't but help to laugh at some of the comments, especially those that wish President Obama to have a nice vacation. I wonder if any of those are the same people who chided Bush for taking so many vacations while in office.

    Mr President
Have a good time. You deserve a vacation. No worries. Some of us understand the complexities and the time it takes to change things. We'll keep up the positive attitude.

I am willing to bet that the same Republicans who complained about not having enough time to read the bill last time, will again complain about not having enough time to read the health care bill.

Has O got any idea how many Americans never even get a vacation? Most of all, those he seems to feel require handouts and freebees? But he is fashionable, as are his wife and kids, and I suppose that is supposed to be inspiring.

This is a president that needs to figure out what's really important. Not just for minorities, but for all Americans. Including those who oppose his policies.

I'm convinced that Obama looks after himself (and his family) first, then he looks after those he sees as underpriviledged (who pay no taxes), and finally, if there is anything left, the rest of us.

    F you Mr. O.
