WASHINGTON (CNN) - A Republican congresswoman apologized Thursday for saying that her party is looking for a "great white hope" to counteract President Obama's political agenda.
Kansas Rep. Lynn Jenkins told the Lawrence Journal-World that she did not intend to make a racist comment, and was simply saying that "Republicans have been suffering in recent years and we need a bright light."
"Obviously I was discussing the future of the Republican Party in response to a question about is there any hope for Republicans," Jenkins said. "I was explaining that there are some bright lights in the House, and I was unaware of any negative connotation. If I offended somebody, obviously I apologize."
Jenkins had been criticized for saying at an August 19 forum in Kansas that the GOP needs "to find the great white hope" to help the party succeed in the future.
"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," Jenkins said. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington."

Just when they seem to be gaining some genuine traction, the GOP lets off another round in their collective foot, which they promptly insert into their mouths. They had better give up on being a big tent: right now they are looking like a rain poncho.
If she meant to say "bright light", she could've just said "bright light" instead of "great white hope".
Thank you, Republican party, for your support of The Daily Show comic writers. This stuff is too funny to make up...
Steele is the great white hope if lights is what she was talking about. The Party elected him.
Freudian slip? No one is surprised by anything like this coming from Texas, Kansas, Mississippi, or South Carolina. Let it slide....It's how they were raised.
Typical. That's why they are the party of No. Party of Distraction and have such a narrow coalition making up there party. They see there power being lost to the New population. She just spoke exactly how they feel as right wing extremist
Stupid stupid comment given the obvious implications, but it is nothing more than a turn of phrase no different than using the lipstick ona pig line. Turning it into a big deal would be jhust as bad as when the GOPers claimed Obama had called Palin a pig, which was total nonsense. She apologized...leave it at that.
Typical republican open mouth insert foot.
Ooops! Freudian slip.
typical republican apology: "When I said white, I didn't mean white." Cf. "it's not torture, it's enhanced interrogation," "some bad weather down in New Orleans tonight, I hear," or "I swear to honor and protect the constitution."
She shouldn't apologize, she was correct.
Ok.. I give her benefit of doubt.
I did not mean to reveal my racism, all I meant was that "Republicans have been suffering in recent years and we need a bright light," and that bright light, it goes without saying, cannot be black or Hispanic.
I d 10 t
Tech talk for IDIOT
Thank goodness for national media. In Kansas, the Repubs are claiming this is not a racist statement it just refers to someone who has great promise in their field. Yeah right. Oh by the way, all the people she referred to were white.
Let's assume the congresswoman is ignorant about the context of the phrase she used. Let's assume the congresswoman's brain was unable to connect that a phrase including the word "white" and counteracting Obama may carry some racial connotation. Then we can forgive her and we are left to feel sorry for the voters in the Kansas House district who are represented by an illiterate airhead.
I would probably be considered a liberal and even I think this is ridiculous. Let's stop looking for racism/sexism and homophobia where it doesn't exist. There are plenty of real life examples of it in the world. "Great white hope" is an old phrase. People need to stop apologizing for everything in this country.
Please think before speaking! It is comments like this that instigate even more hatred and predjudice! I pray everyday for Americans to live in Peace, Love and Harmony. And with elected officials like this spouting off comments without thinking, is unconsiounable! We elect our officials to speak for us, and this is not what we want to hear!
The truth comes out one way or another with these people...you really think all the furor on the part of southern whites over this health care issue has anything to do with health care?
"Kansas Rep. Lynn Jenkins told the Lawrence Journal-World that she did not intend to make a racist comment,"
Yeah she did. She just didn't "intend" to get called on it. It's like I've always told my children, just because you say you're "sorry" after you say mean, hateful things doesn't make it any better.
Ye olde Freudian slip...
...conservative Republican-style...
...Lynn we know EXACTLY what you meant...
The only way the GOP will find great white hope is to stop being the party of NO and start working with president. And they need to stop Palin from making remarks like the death panel deal. She is the one who got this country in an uproar about the health care reform, and then she has people like Rush, Glen, Mitt going along with her on it. Palin is going on fox news for only one reason she wants these jerks to be in her cabinet when alaska puts her in the white house.
Wow...how can that be taken any other way than as a racist comment? There was a reason that they kept showing the same token black man at the RNC last year...he was the only one there.
I'm not saying that all Republicans are racist...But I think it's fair to say that all white supremists vote Republican. There is a reason for that. ALL of their policies are inteded to help BIG business. Cititzens and namely those that can't fend for themselves(tend to be minorities) are on their own. And Bush had the nerve to call Republicans the party of inclusion. Only his cabinet reflected that(mainly for photo ops I'm sure) and not his party.
And this is why there is no future for the GOP. How does that shoe taste anyways? Mmmmmmmmmmmm yummy,
Maybe if the GOP would return to what they are always promising and never doing they might have a chance. Smaller government, less collectivism, no progressive policies, NO "New World Order" and a return to the principles of the founding fathers. Maybe if the GOP would stop lining their pockets with every lobbyist and special interest dollars, they would remember "We the People" for a change.
I am so sorry to say this person is my representative. Humiliating.
If you know a little history, you'd know that the origin of the term had to do with people trying to find a white guy to win back the heavyweight title from Jack Johnson, a black guy. So yes, the implications of using that phrase are a bit racist and do show one of the many unspoken motives of the reptile party. Have a nice day!
Sure congress woman! wink wink.
Since when did the term "Great White Hope" refer to lights? It has and will always refer to somebody who is white that is going to make something big happen, hopefully. This is the REAL reson the GOP lost in the last election. It's because they exclude people who have no control of what they look like. I would like to see somebody take control of the GOP that has common sense and take in people of all kinds.
Sounds like she's been going to too many town hall meetings.
Acutally any Hope after this charade as a president would be nice,
What more can I say? Many of us have known for quite some time the REAL reason why angry white people are holding "tea parties" and protesting health care reform. It's all about a black man being in the White House. Lynn Jenkins just let it slip.
Are we supposed to believe that Rep. Jenkins is so illiterate as to not know the context of the phrase "great white hope"? The whole story was about how segregation and prejudice played a part in finding a white boxer to bring down the Black boxing champ Jack Johnson. I'm getting sick of all the "unintended code words" to rally the fringe members of the right. I still holding out hope that not all Republicans buy into this garbage, but the rhetoric from people like her doesn't help their case.
If you wanna stay in that party then you have no choice but to fall in ranks just like the army – do as they do, etc..
I've met Lynn Jenkins before and she seems like genuinely nice person so I don't believe she is a racist or intended her remark to be racists. Of course after meeting her I didn't think she was that smart either!
Yeah right , she was looking for a bright light. How stupid do you think we are? Republicans are racist, period.
It is very funny to see how people try to safe face when cought in racial bigotry. This racist congresswoman from Kansas clearly meant what she said the first time: " We need a great white hope to counteract President Barack Obama who according to her is the great black hope". The fact is Barack Obama is the elected president of the United States of America and represents all Americans regardless of your color, creed, or religion. Stop trying to divide America ethnically!.
Solomon
Charleston SC
As treasurer she set up saving plans for minorites to pay for college. I don't think she's a racist. Unfortunately choice of words, yes. Racist, no.
I love it. The Republicans know exactly what they're doing and saying. Just putting their various comments out there acheives what they want it to and they then back track and say it was a slip of the tounge.
At best, a terrible choice of words. Will the next generation of congressmen and women realize that every word they say will make around the world in seconds? These people make an obscene amount of money; the least they can do is think before they speak.
She needs to resign immediately. No question.
I have been noticing that CNN will not post any of my comments. My comments are quite mild compared to other people's comments?????
Back to this article. The comment from this congresswomen only justifies what the republicans think and want. I should not just blame the republicans but alot of Americans feels the same way!! If you don't believe me ask my wife about certain people views from her job!
Have a nice day!!!
Jenkins' comment was quite inappropriate. For those who don't know the origin of "great white hope", please check Wikipedia. Perhaps she was thinking of Melville's "great white whale", but boy did she make a big mistake. This Congresswoman seems to be unaware of American history and the English language. At least she apologized for her "misstatement".
Brown skin people need not apply. What an idiot, we know what you meant Congreswoman. Those of us that are intelligent know what all the fuss is about anytime our Black President tries to do something to help our country.
The true meaning of this idiom is "Something or someone that is expected to succeed". However, in this country, sensitivity prevails so you have to watch your mouth lest the foot finds its way in.
Um, if you want to say we need a "bright light" or "bright new hope" then just say that!
That comment was nothing but racist.
LOL...well she's from Kansas what did you expect? I mean honestly? I love it Repubs...keep being idiots and distancing yourselves from the common man...(And minorities) keep it up.
The phrase "Great White Hope" comes from boxing, when once Jack Johnson became the first black champion, the media clamored for a white challenger who could beat him.
No need to appologize everyone knows by now what the GOP/Repubs is about....
The repugs need to shut the heck up for a few months. Every time they try anything, and I mean anything, it backfires on them. They are all showing that they are a bunch of backward racist hillbillies without a clue.
Lights??????? Oh and I have land on the Moon (wink, wink)
WHATEVER!!!
Evil Republicans.....
The Man upstairs sees all and hears all.
Great White Hope is an expression and nothing more. Not everything is racist, but those who see racism in everything surely must be.
Just remember : if you spot it, you got it.
It's so sad that a political party that supposedly have God on their side can not see that President Obama was placed in office by divine appointment. You'll never win in four years with hate, deception, deceit, lying, manipulation and pride. We are suppose pray for our government (Republicans and Democrats), not use hateful tactics to eliminate them. You'll never win this way!
Is the GOP going to manage boxers now? I guess it must be since they are finished as a *sane* political party...
I am white. I am a moderate independent who was once a long time republican. Me and a lot of other moderate folks are looking for political sanity. We won't support thuggery. I guess I just got sick and tired of the republican party's loving embrace of the far right. It appears that the republicans are looking to the far right in hopes of finding the "great white hope" to do battle with the new skinny half white kid. Let's hope they find someone in possession of both front teeth. By-crackie.
Isn't it odd how Republicans who use racist language always apologize for it later by saying they didn't know it was racist?
"The Great White Hope" arose from a movie by the same title – its about a white boxer's chances of winning against a black boxer.
Not rocket science.
I think the one that should be ashamed is Michael Steele. He has just let then RNC get away with too much racisim and should be calling them out on it. But no it's more important for him to look like a fool apparently than to install his dignity again.
For all you stupid democrats that are trying to turn this into some kind of racist remark..as usual, open your little minds and read the below reference from the Princeton website, and then go back to reading your comic books and texting one another.....
"Great White Hope (someone (or something) expected to achieve great success in a given field) "this company is the great white hope of the nuclear industry's waste management policy"
Typical racist republican.
It seems there's another GOP that is very bothered by the fact that a black President will bring us back from the quagmire we are all in.
It just doesnt sit well with the racists that OUR guy will go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents ever. As a matter of fact it
really galls them!
She's right – the republicans are holding out for the "great white hope" because that's all they've got left – they've managed to alienate just about every other ethnic group, so it's no misspeak.
Here's some context, per wikipedia.....
"The Great White Hope tells a fictional idealised life story of boxing champion Jack Johnson, here called Jack Jefferson.[2] Acting as a lens focused on a racist society, The Great White Hope explores how segregation and prejudice created the demand for a "great white hope" who would defeat Johnson and how this, in turn, affected the boxer's life and career."
Now, despite the origin of the phrase, let's see some blathering about how all Republicans are racists.
Hmmmm.... wonder what is going to happen to the GOP in twenty years when caucasions are a minority in this country. Can't change your racist beliefs that quickly!
Could it be that the Repubs just cannot help themself from making racist comments? It would appear that it is a case of open mouth, insert foot.
That may be second only to the Health Care comments. In those cases, it is open mouth, lie lie lie.
Oh look! A new nominee for dumbest congressperson EVER! If you want to live in racist times, go back to the 18th Century, biggot!
This party and anyone affiliated with it is either racist or crazy. They are always making comments like this. They have always been looking at themselves as a great white hope. They even have a seperate white Jesus not the Jew from the Bible. I like the real Jesus. He doesn't like them.
Who cares
What other meaning does that phrase have?
Funny...she obviously said just what she meant, is backtracking, but the right has forgiven her...and the left, instead of grandstanding over this idiotic comment, is letting it speak for itself. It has been obvious for a while that their real problem with the President is his skin, not his policies.
I'm sure that her statement wasn't a "freudian slip" and meant exactly what she said! I don't understand why all the anti-Obama sentiment is coming out now. Considering how overwhelmingly he beat McCain, why are so many people against him now? I think their using the healthcare bill as a smokescreen to vent their frustrations over the recession and they're blaming Obama instead of who is the real culprit......our lovely former president! His skin color has nothing to do with lost jobs and money problems. The recession began in 2007.....not 2009!
This woman knew exactly what she was saying and what she was implying. This is just another example of where the GOP is headed. She just got caught making a racist statement. Many Republicans feel that there is an all out war against "THEIR KIND" and they now need to do whatever it takes to turn the tide from the way they believe the country is headed....more diverse. Hopefully when all these good 'ol boy politicians depart from this earth the future generations coming behind them will be more tolerant and willing to work for a more diverse country. That's the "bright light" I want to discuss.
So I guess Steele isn't the hope for the GOP?
No need to apologize. Only the idiots on the left who want to make everything into a racial issue will critisize you.
Freundian slip I would say.hahaha
I do not understand why she apologized afterall she was only
stating what she believes. With all the hateful commentary coming
from the right everyone knows this is all about a minority being
president of this country, nothing more. Shame on You!!
At anytime you start an apology with "IF I offended anyone"...just stop because you certainly don't mean it.
She is just saying what the GOP is wishing, hoping and praying for on a daily basis. Where does that leave the Governor of Louisiana and M. Steele? Dah!
Actually, it is a somewhat common saying that people misuse frequently because they do not know their history. The 'great white hope' referred to a white boxer in the early days of boxing, a sport that was predominately black. They felt that this white boxer had what it took to compete against the strength of the black men boxing in the day. However, over time, with history obscured, it has also come to mean a beacon of hope, a bright spot in a dark world(outside of racial connotations). Of course those who know the actual term and history may read deeper. However, I am not sure why it would be so racist to be a different color in a group dominated by another and have people cheer for you to succeed?
I believe that most of you are interpreting her comments as 'racists' because you are the racists and that's how you interpret everything that mentions color! Her use of the term "Great White Hope" obviously refers only the the fight where there was a white boxer who fought against a black boxer. He was referred to as the "Great White Hope", or a person who had superior boxing skills. She's only saying that her part needs someone of superior political skills in order to put her party back into the fight for all of the positions where we stupidly voted for all of these liberal klunkheads (white, black, or as in the case of our president -- white and black). Get a life people, quit thinking of everything as black and white, open your minds and you will see -–
Yeah, this underscores the blatan racism and racial biased that is prevelant in today's Republican party. It comes to the fore on statements like this, which need to be immediately explained. What can you expect from a party who is headed by Rush Limbaugh, if you don't believe Rush rules the roost just ask Michael Steele...who the real boss is!!
"Obviously" the Congress woman was speaking to a group of her "obvious" peers and "obviously" didn't think her "obviously" racist comment would become "obvious". It's "obvious" that Republicans, in general, aren't thinking clearly with a Knee-Grow in the White House. "Obviously".
What an "obvious" loon.
Holy cow. The Republicans don't even try to hide it anymore. This lady is no different than the rest, they just don't say it in public. I'll be glad when this group finishes self destructing so the Democrats can get something done.
Whats new?nothing The Republicans can't only not see any light in their dark blank worldlight their has gone out .
Jenkins you are not fooling anyone you meant every word of your rehearsed statement it was intended big timeand from the Get Go .
This Congresswoman spoke how way too many people think. We hear vague comments from our neighbors and fellow employees who obviously think that way. They use every way possible to disguise their feelings about President Obama. Now some are brazen enough (stupid) to let their true feeling pour forth. These town hall meetings really reflect that, with the outragious behavior of too many. If they really had differences with President Obama's ideas, they would act more thoughtfully. Their hatred (and fear) is showing too clearly. I hope the "silent majority" finally stop these disruptive folk in their paths. When will our Congress be willing to walk across the aisles and also behave as adults. Senator Kennedy and his "opposition" remind us of how it used to be.
LOL you're not gonna find your "great white hope" in Steele!
You can't spin this one , baby! What you said was exactly what you meant. yes?
Another, deep down, racist Republican, this Lynn Jenkins is, yes?
We already know that the Republicans are playing racial games with our country, that wasn't a slip it's what they say behind closed doors.
The Republicans think they can win if they and Rush Limbaugh are successful in creating racial strife – Not in my country, I won't let you.
Why does the GOP have so many racists? There is no place for such ignorant, disrespectful discourse in America. Jenkins cannot even admit that she made an offensive, ignorant, racist remark. Jenkins has had her Macaca moment but GOP leader Glenn Beck continues to get paid millions for spouting hate speech.
She said what she meant – it was not a mistake – One dumb individual.
Let's see if this artiicial gets plastered all over news and internet; and for how long? Since it's a white person making these comments maybe a day or two at the most!!!!
The Republican party is a White Christian Upper Middle Class/Rich party. They are great at scaring people into voting for them. What does it say about your country when you actually vote for them? When you look at the debt and suffering and loss of life in Iraq this was mostly the result of the U.S. being in Republican hands. The Republicans will stop at nothing to bring down your black President.
You have attacked President Obama with words like:racist, terrorist, socialist, communist, radical, and Americans have shown up at rallies with guns.
On the one hand you say you are losing Liberty and freedom and want the government to leave you alone. In the next breath you say the government should stop companies from sending jobs overseas.
The Republicans want to keep people poor , uneducated and subserviant. They are racist and try to hide it but every once and awhile it slips out.
There is less clowns in the' cirque du soleil' than the gops
Gee whiz. Lighten up people. Poor choice of words – yes – but quit the race baiting...it's just an expression and everybody knows that. It's a term freely used, regardless of skin color, in all walks of life.
The thing is, it's not always a deliberate attempt at racism. I was raised in a part of the country where they use phrases like "indian giver" and "I jewed him down to a cheaper price", and other such gems.
I think the reason this sort of things comes down on the GOP so often is that its members, by and large, surround themselves with people who are pretty much like them. The lack of diversity brings with it a lack of awareness.
The republicans are truly racist and elitist. This is not an accidental statement, but a window into the Republican soul They got run out of Washington D.C. by the voters of the U.S. for just this sort of behavior. I only hope that no republican ever wins a new congressional or presidential position ever again.
The GOP truly represents its self well. I would rather deal with someone who lets you know where they are coming from at all times, rather than someone who lies and is a faker. Not only are they the party of '"no'" but represents the real prejudice that exist in America..
I thought Styx invented that phrase. You learn something new every day. Have a nice day!
bright light, yeah she meant bright "white"...sickening
I am a life long Democrat and I really believe that her remarks were innocent. I just think she is not very quick on the uptake. If you notice most repuglicans only know what their money people tell them. You can understand that when you check the legislation they have put forth in their careers.
what I find funny is those on the right who defend her statement saying it wasn't a racist remark...then why did she have to say she was sorry for saying it then? I bet Rush would not have apoligized nor would Glenn Beck....heck he called the president a racist and is still on the air. The Dixe Chicks made a stupid statement abouth then President Bush and the right wingers wanted to run them out of the country. Go figure.
Oh dear, your Freudian slip is showing.
Fresh meat for the oh-so-very sensitive liberal left, who need a time-out from their hate-mongering and hidden remorse about electing THE most incompetent president ever.
I could not find a single topic about this on the FOX websites.
Republicans are a dying breed, people are more educated now and will not accept the closed minded, self serving, racist, gayist, sexist ways of the republican party.
america's becoming more diverse by the minute.
i am a product of a chinese father & an irish/scottish mother.
i think the last thing the republicans need are more white people – try mixing in some color or end up like the dinosaur.
what a joke the republican party is. RICH OLD WHITE MEN JUST CAN NOT STAND THE FACT THAT A BLACK MAN BEAT THEM FOR THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND.
Not being a politician, I don't know what would be worse in this situation, having to own up to that little bit of prejudice that lurks deep down inside every human being's subconscious or that I was really so ignorant and ill-read that I didn't know what that phrase referred to.
I often wondered what repubs meant when the say, "I want MY country back!"
Now I know.
I prefer when people are honest and not politically correct. At least now we know what we're dealing with when the republican party puts up their next candidate for president...
haha...GOPer public speaking instructions:
1. Open Mouth;
2. Insert Foot;
3. Apologize Insincerely;
4. Profit?
I see their still a bunch of Idiots. She meant what she said, let's hope she finds another one just like George.
After listening to Limbaugh this morning (hey, I was in a cab, and the radio was on LOUD), and hearing him talk about how Obama is this angry black man with this angry black man's social agenda, I find it very hard to believe there isn't real racism underneath the Party of Fear's talking points, and in this case, what is usually said behind closed doors, accidentally slipped out of her mouth. In fact, even the commercials on that show were about fear. There was one advocating buying gold, because "the stock market is unreliable, and the way the current government is spending money, you need to prtoect yourself against the mess that is sure to come from this irresponsible spending". That is a paraphrase, but that is what the right is listening to. The result of all that fear-mongering has got to leak out from time to time.

What an idiotic thing to say. Just like when Obama said he wouldn't raise taxes.
I believe that is called a metaphor, at least it was back when I was in school.
It's not like this is a suprise.
The Republican Party has made it very clear that they have no use for people of color (other than white), gender (other than male unless you are a mistress, or ideas (unless you idea of an idea is to say "no").
They should continue right on with the policy of inclusion by exclusion. They should continue to wait for their great white hope while the rest of the country moves decidedly beyond such nonsense.
Wow a real Biden moment.
Really stupid, really, really stupid.
So much about a big tent for Republicans. Why does the hope necessarily have to be white? Can we say Freudian slip?
EVERYONE knows the great white hope is....
Sicle Cell Anemia!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Looks like Lynn Jenkins has opened mouth and inserted foot! It also looks like she has certified the Republican platform, Hypocracy, Bigotry ,and Hatred! She and Palen ought to do well together.
She had no idea of the racial connotations? Is she completely ignorant? If so then she should not be allowed to serve. Idiot excuses.
Is she apologizing for the comment or apologizing for being a racist. In todays world it seems that people accidentally say what their true feelings are and then apologize for the comment - not for the feeling.
She sounds like Obama's pastor for the last 20 years.
A "bright light" indeed. Did we all fall off a turnip truck, Congresswoman, or do you just THINK we did. Funny how we show our "true colors" when we're apparently not thinking! I am frankly appalled at how little we have learned over the years and how much racism and prejudice still exists. There are many people who haven't evolved an inch in decades - such a shame and very sad.
She had her great white hope–George W. Bush. Newflash....he blew it.
Now on to the real world.
The problem and it certainly is not exclusively Rep. Jenkins is that people do not understand the language and have no concept of the references. As an example, to say that something is a tar baby has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with a person's race. It is not related to a person's ethnicity. Yet the term, which means a situation that draws in with consequences, is now so misunderstood that it cannot be used in polite company. Rep Jenkins is NOT Glen Beck and I seriously doubt that she knew or intended to use the phrase 'great white hope' as a reference to Barack Obama's race. This is the thrashing of willfully ignorant people who are anxious to start a controversy. We have a moral obligation to be intelligent. We are living in the first country of the first world and we presume to tell Sunni to get along with Shiite, Jews to get along with Palestinians, Bosnians with Serbs, etc. What about us and our readiness to be critical, sarcastic and hyperbolic on every insignificant issue that can be turned into traction. We are better than this.
Color is only skin deep!
We are all unique individuals and all men are created equal
The only thing that different between us is our upbringing, our identity, culture and our believes.
We should never judge others because the color of his skin that is plain wrong.
People who start their apology with "If I offended somebody" aren't really sorry at all. They just want everyone to stop talking about their gaffes.
I'm not offened by the comment being a black women I never have or never will think the GOP party is the party for me. She meant what she said they need a "great white hope" to save the Republican party not black like Michael Steele or Indian like Bobby Jindal. I don't think to many minorities think the GOP is for them so no harm no foul.
The great white hope leads to devolution.
Dear Lynn,
You have to take one foot out of your mouth, before you can put another foot in. My advice to you–STOP TALKING. You're so blind to diversity and inclusiveness, you don't even know what you're saying.
"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," I just wonder what all the Republicans of color think about this RACIST comment ? Lets hear it Mr. Steele ! what do you think ?
just like Oboozo said......"typical white woman"
Out of the mouth; the heart speaketh...
What a mess the Republican Party has become.
