First on the CNN Ticker: DNC takes aim at Cheney

The DNC is taking aim at Dick Cheney in a new ad.
The DNC is taking aim at Dick Cheney in a new ad.

(CNN) - The Democratic National Committee is taking aim at Dick Cheney over his string of high-profile media appearances during which the former vice president has been highly critical of President Obama's national security policies.

In a new 30-second television ad set for national cable and local cable in Washington, the DNC asserts many of Cheney's statements have been incorrect - particularly those in which he has argued enhance interrogation techniques conclusively yielded intelligence.

That ad compares those recent statements to ones he made in the leadup to the Iraq war, when he declared Americans would be "greeted as liberators" and that he was sure Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

"Dick Cheney, wrong then, wrong now," the ad states.

The DNC has used Cheney as a punching bag several times already this year, releasing a string of Web videos and press releases last spring questioning whether he was the new leader of the GOP.

Cheney most recently appeared on Fox News, declaring in an interview Sunday that enhanced interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, considered by many to be torture, were "absolutely essential in saving thousands of American lives."

Critics contend there is little evidence to support the notion that the techniques themselves were what yielded the information.

Dick Cheney needs to pay for his crimes.Ordinary citizens do. Why is he above the law? Oh, I forgot he is a republican. If they do it – it's not against the law? Yeah, right.

Evil Dick is a fear monger, plain and simple. That is all he is good for, striking fear into his "base" (read ignorant republicans) and stirring stuff up. He should be in jail along with Rumsfeld, Ridge, Rove and W. Evil men, all them.

If Cheney lacks credibility, which he does, he's been proven a liar, why is anyone giving him any air time as if what he has to say is relevant? The sheep that continue to follow him and Limbaugh are going to go off the cliff anyway, the rest of us are just getting a little tired of the same old principal of FUD that the Republican party uses – Create enough fear, uncertainty and doubt and people will follow you like sheep – much like what has happened to the health care reform and those that are afraid we are becoming socialists. If anything, waterboard him and see if that enhances his opinion about the true merits of it, and include his daughter too.

The DNC has to have someone to punch on just to distract the country from the horrendous job being done by Obama. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Obama would govern this poorly and Cheney has to face down the thuggish left and media to point out the truth. These are the consequences of campaigning as a moderate and running the country like a Chicago arm breaking liberal.

I wish we could get away from the idea that the effectiveness of torture is a valid reason to do it. Killing your spouse is an effective way of ending an argument but that doesn't make it OK; it's still murder and still illegal. Many institutions have found torture effective including the Catholic church, the Soviets, the Nazis, etc. but it's still not legal, moral, or ethical.

It's interesting to note that the only terrorist attack on American soil happened under Bush/Cheney. No such attack under anyone else's administration. Just saying.

Cheney being wrong about things is right up there with other revelations like water being wet and sand being dry.

Dick Cheney, an eldritch creature of pure evil that has assumed human form, operates according to rules that do not take into account the well-being of the insignificant beings called "humans" that inhabit planet Earth.

Even the collective efforts of the 6.5 billion or so Earthlings who have not been seduced by its otherworldly braying might not be enough to stop it and its acolytes.

Seems to me that the DNC is forced to respond to Cheney's ridiculous comments. It would be wonderful if they could afford to completely ignore him; but it is necessary to respond to this man's irresponsibility. As long as he gets air time, his comments need to be addressed. He is DANGEROUS for giving fodder to America's enemies. Sad, sad man.

Dick Cheny is trying to justify the torture perpetrated by him an others in the Bush administartion. So that fact that he lies about the torture's efficacy is no surprise. He is responsible for turning Iraq and other regions into a breeding ground for terrorists and for the reputation that the US tortures people. The Obama administartion has done extremely well on the torture issue and managing foreign relations. Indeed, Obama is helping to restore the US as non-torturing moral world leader. The one thing Cheney fails to address is the fact 9/11 occured on his watch. In any event, this is a guy who shot a person in the face and did not apologize for the incident. It is no wonder that he will never take responsibilty for and ackowledge his failed policies. Finally, it is not surp[siing that he claims an investigation into the torture issue is politically motivated - hey is used to being above the law. A thougthful, caring wise elder statesman, he is not.

I am a 65 year old die-hard Republican! I have a lot of respect for what Dick Cheney has done throughout his political career. That being said, it is time for Dick Cheney to go away. The nation seems to be split down the middle over this CIA situation and all Cheney's comments are doing are exasperating the all ready divided country.
He has turned into another Jimmy Carter. These two need to stay off center stage period!!!!!!!

Suddenly Mr. "Secrecy" won't shut up! Why isn't Bush defending the policies? Oh yeah-he was just a puppet.

Hey Cheney, don't you have some hunting to do?

My take on what Cheney has been saying, is only a false defence for the crimes that he could be accused and convicted of. Cheney has little credibility for telling the truth.

Why do the democrats continue to worry about what Chenney says, to the extent that they are willing to spend a significant amount of money to counter his points? With all of the current issues that we face in this nation, you would think that the democrats would spend their time and money trying to gain some ground on health care, the economy, etc. If Chenney is as pathetic as they like to think he is, why do they feel it necessary to react to his comments? How long will we allow the democrats to focus on has-been politicians like Bush and Chenney, and ignore the true current issues? Seems to imply that the democrats think they can divert our attention away from the real problems we face today. I hope the voters take note of this in the next election cycle.

All politics aside, I don't like a liar. Cheney has proven, again and again, that he is a pathological liar who will break any law to pursue his personal agenda and world view. I'll never trust another word out of his mouth.

Cheney is such an sphincter...Dick just go away and be thankful you are not behind bars in jail for all of your crimes against humanity. Some people just don't know when to quit and go away.

Dick Cheney should just GO AWAY, for about 10 to 20 years in a Federal Penitentiary.

well big mouth is at it again!!! he is an evil man and his lies have killed thousands of people from our country and other countries. he should just go away and hide his head in shame in his jail cell. but he can not do that as he thought he had fooled everyone and his crimes would never be known. he thought he would be a hero-but sometimes evil will out–

  24. Someone who is at least attempting to educate herself on the issues

"The DNC has used Cheney as a punching bag " is an interesting statement, considering that the man has consistently been making public appearances, spouting lies while repeatedly attacking the current administration. This is similar to supporters of Sarah Palin complaining that the press were so mean and wouldn't leave her alone although she seems to have never seen a camera or a journalist in front of which she didn't want to speak. I never thought I would see the day when George Bush showed class but, like those in previous administrations, he has kept his opinions to himself regarding his successor. Cheney's behavior, as always, is unprecedented by former VPs and he is making himself look extremely foolish. Frankly, I think he's lost his marbles. Old friends who knew him from years ago don't even recognize the person that he has become.

OK, Dick. Do you want to have this argument? Fine. Let me remind you: On September 11th, 2001, YOU were VP, Bush was President, YOUR CIA was in charge, YOUR FBI was in charge, and Condi Rice was right in the middle of it too. Regan wasn't President, Clinton wasn't President, Bush senior wasn't President, YOU and W were running the show. And the worst terrorist attack in US history happened under YOUR watch. Period. Why doesn't this ever come up? So, Dick, before you point fingers and pull out that tired old "let's scare everyone" strategy that worked for so long but is now so irrelevant, please look to your OWN Administration and it's total failure to do the "Number One" job...protect the citizens of the USA.
