(CNN) – Sarah Palin is calling the AP's decision to release a battlefield photo of a dying Marine over the family's objection "an evil thing to do."
In a Sunday night post on her Facebook page, the former Alaska governor called the photo released this week of Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard's dying moments on the battlefield in Afghanistan a "sacred image."
"Many of us join Secretary Gates in condemning the Associated Press for its heartless and selfish decision to turn its back on the wishes of a grieving family in order to exploit the tragic death of a true American hero," she wrote.
The release of the photo was "a despicable and heartless act by the AP," said Palin. "The family said they didn't want the photo published. AP, you did it anyway, and you know it was an evil thing to do.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bernard family. …"
Palin has had limited public appearances since resigning the governor's office in July. Most of her comments have come via posts on her Facebook page.

As I said before – she is an airhead!
Come on AP, please respect the family's wishes. Don't release the photo.
It is odd the press would show this in order to tell the "truth" and yet the press, including CNN, is totally incapable of telling the truth when it comes to the facts relevant to policy.
The press has betrayed the American people and we need people to get out there on YouTube and tear every single news show a new one, until they start showing the facts as truth instead of showing everyone's opinions as facts.
Palin is absolutely right about this.
CNN is trolling a Facebook page to generate news about Sarah Palin? Did she also, like, totally hate the latest Harry Potter film too? We need to know, CNN, put your crack reports back on the Facebook/Twitter-Tweet trail and Woodward-Bernstein the facts for us.
I agree that if the family did not want the photo be released it should not have been. However who gives a hoot as to what Palin has to say? You quit your office Mrs. Palin now just be quiet.
You know Palin and Phewlenty are running a race to see who can generate more hate in the news. If these two are examples of republican "leadership" the country will have nothing to worry about the republicans ever getting back in the whitehouse. All you have to do is look at the mess in Alaska and Minnesota...republicans made it...just like bush ruined the USA>
Although I agree with you on this issue. However, you need to go away.
If anyone knows about being heartless and selfish it is Palin.
Why does anyone, especially CNN, care what this serial quitter says? Stop giving her press, which is exactly what she craves.
AP has placed politics above all else.
This is a shinning example of some of the slime comming from the news media of today. Maybe it is time to look at the media in another light and require some responsibility from them.
Takes evil to know evil-Go away. No one cares what you have to say!
I do feel concern for the family, but we need to see this. Maybe if the public would be allowed to see more of this, there would be enough outrage to end both wars.
If it were my family member, I would want it released, as I would not want any other family to go through what I was going through.
For the first time you are right Palin.
Yes, keep what happens over there a secret. Wouldn't want the liberals getting squeamish like in Nam. That's the American way.
What's more questionable is the media attention on this joke of an ex-governor. Everyone likes a freak, it seems.
First time I've agreed with her.
Again, Sarah Palin steps forward for rational thinking. This was just a plain bad decision on the part of the Associated Press. It wreaks of desperate exploitation of a young man's ultimate sacrifice for his country.
The administration's silence on this incident stands out.
Who are we that we would condone causign any family to have to watch their childs last breath away from home and all alone. If it were my sone or daughter, I would ache knowing that my arms should have been and wanting to have been able to hold my child as tightly as I could. What is wrong with us that we coud believe printing this image and doing this to a grieving family can in any way ever be justified? Some will decide based on who said it is evil. How selfish and truly uncaring and unfeeling we have become as a people and a nation to allow this to happen.
War is almost as ugly as the thought of her being President.
I'm not a Palin fan, but she is right about this. No question.
Well, well. Here's the POT calling the KETTLE black. At least now she is finaly talking about something she knows about: being heartless and selfish.....just ask McCain, her husband, Alaska....
I don't always agree with her, but she's right this time. In this situation the desires of the parents should have been honored.
Who cares what Sarah Palin thinks about this?
Who gives a rat's tail what this nitwit thinks or says????
Photos of a dying Neda were called 'Journalism'. Photos of a dying Marine are called 'evil'. Politicians will say *anything* for political points – this is the true evil.
