WASHINGTON (CNN) - CNN's Deirdre Walsh reports that Republican Rep. Joe Wilson called the White House Wednesday night to apologize for his outburst during President Obama's speech, and spoke with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

UPDATE: CNN's Ed Henry reports that a senior administration official says that in the phone call, Emanuel accepted the apology on behalf of the president and told the congressman: "We can disagree without being disagreeable. That was the point of the President's speech."

Joe Wilson's website, down for "maintenance?" Why don't he be a man, bring his site back up, and take his own medicine? Wimp!

Wanderer   September 10th, 2009 1:34 am ET

Again, I am no fan of Mr. Obama, but the GOP representative’s behavior has shown how cool the POTUS was and how foolish Mr. Wilson was. After 2008 election, many GOP seem to have lost their self-control and could no longer hide their true color.

Kathy, Phoenix, AZ   September 10th, 2009 1:33 am ET

Joe Wilson should resign and go work for an insurance company and give up his "government health plan for members of congress", an apology is not acceptable at this point. He just reminded us why we no longer need the republican ideas and "values".

Keith B   September 10th, 2009 1:32 am ET

The real problem for the Republicans is this. Not only is Obama smarter than most of his critics, but he outclasses his critics.

Ken   September 10th, 2009 1:32 am ET

Despite the apology, I think Wilson's outburst highlighted exactly what Obama was talking about, in a venue for all the public to see just what the Republicans are all about. It isn't about opposition to healthcare, or the kind of conservative ideology that says it's ok to spend a trillion tax dollars on a needless war, but not on helping our own citizens... it's degenerated into name-calling and petulance... instead of working for the American people, there are many in Washington who are just out to beat eachother.

Ian   September 10th, 2009 1:30 am ET

That bonehead Joe Wilosn should resign ASAP, forget the apology.

JJ   September 10th, 2009 1:29 am ET

Representative Wilson not only acted disgracefully, but he was also INCORRECT. The current bill specifically excludes illegal aliens from coverage under healthcare reform. Conservative politicians like Rep. Wilson don't even bother with the truth. They seem only to be interested in blocking progress in this country and in tearing down the President of the United States. Shameful.

ThinkAgain   September 10th, 2009 1:27 am ET

Hear, hear! Enough of the hysterical lies! Our country needs the smartest and coolest heads to prevail in helping us meet our many challenges!

Enough of the schoolyard name calling, lying and threats. Time to get down to business and get this done!

Karl   September 10th, 2009 1:24 am ET

President Obama met his goal this evening. Explain health care in layman's terms. He did that. Now for the GOP. No one should be upset with the Repugs' behavior. It's a sign of fear and loathing. Never in the history of American politics has a party totally disembowel themselves of purpose and reason. Our President bought it home this evening and many can't stand it...but many more love it! Keep your heads up. We're winning.

Donkey Party   September 10th, 2009 1:20 am ET

The apology should have been rejected. The idiot still thinks the plan will cover illegals. The apology was not sincere, it was forced upon him by the GOP who look like complete morons right now.

Wise Latina   September 10th, 2009 1:13 am ET

Rahm Emmanuel - the same man who sends DEAD FISH to political opponents - saying "We can disagree without being disagreeable". That is a real hoot and a half!!

mn   September 10th, 2009 1:12 am ET

Class meets trash Mr Wilson you out to be ashamed of yourself. Luckily for you Mr Obama is able to school you on how to behave.

Clint   September 10th, 2009 1:12 am ET

WOW!
Between the governor and this idiot, are there any SANE christian redneck's from South Carolina left? ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

Jim   September 10th, 2009 1:12 am ET

Rep. Joe Wilson has no respect for the president nor congress or the American people. The people of South Carolina should vote him out!

Turnabout is Fair Play   September 10th, 2009 1:09 am ET

Ignorant, arrogant, typical Republican fool. You Mr. Wilson of the state of S. Carolina have just sealed your doom. You WILL be replaced by the democratic senator looking to unseat you and you would be deservedly defeated. We've had enough of your kind of hate and ignorance and it's time for Republicans to go in 2010. You and Sanford are a continuing embarrassment to that state.

Bruce Kettler   September 10th, 2009 1:08 am ET

Real classy, Rep. Wilson.
Call the President a liar in public. And then apologize.
How long until he recants his apology?

LVCami   September 10th, 2009 1:07 am ET

What a disrespectful jerk. I guess his mama didn't bring him up very well. My child would know better than that.

Lisa   September 10th, 2009 1:07 am ET

Wilson's outburst was disgusting and disrespectful!

Patty in the CA mountains   September 10th, 2009 1:07 am ET

I'll bet he did....and I'll bet he pays for his outburst....

Drew   September 10th, 2009 1:05 am ET

It seems that this is the first time that a member of Congress has been so verbally disrespectful to a President during his address to Congress. Of course, it's also the firs time that the President is a Black Man. Could there be a correlation? And to Rep Joe Wilson, you are a disgrace for your blatant disrespect to our Commander-in-Chief! As a military man, you know better! Whether you agree with him or not, he IS the President of the United States of America and you need to show some RESPECT! I'm sure your parents taught you proper manners!! You are the kind of trash we don't need in Washington or any other place of public service! You should be reprimanded for your conduct. He's Black and he won it fair and square, so grow up PUNK!

Proud American   September 10th, 2009 1:01 am ET

The Republican Party has sunk to an all time low, how disrespectful. They must hate this President with a passion. As bad as things got in this counrty he was never treated that way on the hill. Republican are so stupid that they don't have a clue just how stupid they are. The good thing is Americans know and don't forget.

brian in mesa   September 10th, 2009 1:01 am ET

Joe Wilson = GOP. Another reason for this Indenpendant to continue to stay away from all Republicans. Who does Joe Wilson appeal to. Scary to think the mindset of people who vote for this type of individual.

Hodson dorival   September 10th, 2009 1:00 am ET

The idiot who shouted the President a liar, in front of the world. should be punished immediately. i bet he could have not done that in Haiti, i bet that.

shawnm77   September 10th, 2009 1:00 am ET

No pre-existing conditions make life easier for every american citizen family in some way. People like Joe Wilson is mad cause they have no plans other than collect a paycheck from South Carolina like the other congressman. Joe Wilson needs his private life investigated I bet he's got some skeletons in his closet. All I know is we have enough crazy people mad that an estimated 47 MILLION AMERICANS will be able to see a doctor if needed.

Michelle   September 10th, 2009 12:59 am ET

This was not an "outburst"! He yelled it twice with a long pause in between! I am donating to his opponent’s campaign! He is an Iraq war veteran named Rob Miller! South Carolina can do better with someone who fought for our country.......not a disrespectful flip-flopper! What an embarrassment he is to S. Carolina!

David Newport, OR   September 10th, 2009 12:58 am ET

what do you expect from a Republican? This is what we have to work with...100% ignorance shown in its purest form.

Sam   September 10th, 2009 12:56 am ET

WIlson did all of us a favor: he showed and reminded us of how implacable the extreme right has been and will be on the health care debate. They cannot reasonably be expected to be part of a solution.

Can you imagine trying to reason with an American Congressman who call a sitting American President a liar during the President's speech to the joint Congress?

No point continuing to try.

Why does the GOP still exist?   September 10th, 2009 12:56 am ET

The GOP - the party of utter douchebags.

Nicole   September 10th, 2009 12:56 am ET

What grade is Joe Wilson in again? What a DB!

Dorothy Dotson   September 10th, 2009 12:56 am ET

Joe Wilson is a disgusting dreg of humanity and he makes me ashamed. I think his apology was the LIE.

freda   September 10th, 2009 12:55 am ET

I am so proud of my President. He's such an inspiration to me and I'm thrilled he can exercise his character of brillance without having a gigantic ego. He knows what's good for the USA and if the blue dogs and republicans would just allow him to do what's good for the country we will all become beneficiaries of his leadership.

With regard to Republican Rep. Joe Wilson, ignorant is ignorant does. He was unable to exhibit his respect for the President of the United States for just one hour. He was extremely disrespectful.

We will have the public option whether the republicans like it or not. It's not that they are against the public option – they're against Preident Obama. I wonder why.

Anonymous   September 10th, 2009 12:54 am ET

South Carolina should add Joe Wilson to the list requesting resignations The apology will not get it. He represented SC and now his state appears rather ignorant because of his actions. Two bad words and you are out of here. Never to be respected again.

michaeljpmurray   September 10th, 2009 12:52 am ET

Why so angry?

RepWilson needs to go   September 10th, 2009 12:49 am ET

This has got to be one of the saddest days in the history of modern politics. Not only did this guy embarass himself, his state, but the entire United State of America. I know some people are cheering his comments, but the sad fact of the matter is he was WRONG!!! I am amazed that the Repubs continue to offer nothing but lies and shame... Where is your bill? How are you going to solve the health crisis? What do you bring to the table besides HOT AIR ?!!!

Mark   September 10th, 2009 12:48 am ET

Need I say more....

Crude Republican PIG....

Maureen   September 10th, 2009 12:47 am ET

I am Canadian and a great admirer of President Obama. I was shocked and disgusted at the lack of respect shown him by Joe Wilson during President Obama's speech. To call the President of the United States a liar is unforgiveable. You people don't seem to realize what the rest of the world seems to agree on – That President Obama is the best thing to happen to America in many years. You elected him to make change and your trust and admiration for him and your desire for that change elected him to the highest office in the land. Since then your Red Neck Republicans have shown they have one agenda and only one = to bring him down any way possible. by the way – you people should be so lucky to have a health care system like we enjoy in Canada. Wake up America before it is too late and you end up like Russia, once a super power, now a wanna be.

David S. Robins   September 10th, 2009 12:47 am ET

Let's hope the White House put the scumbag Wilson on hold for a couple of hours before finding a janitor to accept his "apology." We already knew Joe Wilson is a liar, it's good that he proved it again on prime time television with the whole nation watching.

Ren from Baltimore   September 10th, 2009 12:45 am ET

Many of us hope that Rep Wilson wil bring his hair-trigger reaction temperament to the fore when it comes to triggering the "public option." No real need four years if the insurance industry doesn't get their own costs down; fire that trigger withn weeks.

The fact that such behavior was only a breath away from actually coming out of his mouth, however, suggests perhaps a less than happy ending for this man's immediate political career.

Joe In Vegas   September 10th, 2009 12:45 am ET

President Obama has made history with his ground breaking speech and has all but assured that his health care reform will pass.

Rep. Joe Wilson has made history for sinking the republican party to even lower depths (bottom feeding miscreants). His outburst has all but assured that the GOP has absolutely NO! leadership and their infantile attempts to undermine President Obama have officially failed.

This is a great day for America!

Tucker Holland   September 10th, 2009 12:44 am ET

Thats typical of the people who hate Obama. They don't disagree with his policies, its the skin color!!! Not wanting there kids to hear him speak to them in the class room (encouragement). H Bush/Reagan did it, no problem! What you heard from Mr. Wilson is simply a carry over from the McCain rally last year, an eldery woman stands and says he is not an American, and she's afraid of what he'll do to this country. I certainly hope he won't treat America like Mr. Madof or Mr. Sanford or many of the other out standing citizens. I'm an eveyday go to work kinda guy, worked hard, served America American!!

Wayne   September 10th, 2009 12:44 am ET

Mr. Wilson You represent the politics of old. No matter what our differences are civility and respect for each other should be at the forefront of our challenges and disagreement. Shame on you Mr. Wilson, I hope your behaviour does not represent the foundation of republican party that is now being called the party of NO!!!!!!!!

dt   September 10th, 2009 12:43 am ET

Joe Wilson, another Classic example of republican party.

Gopsaurus   September 10th, 2009 12:42 am ET

South Carolina politicians can't seem to control themselves.

Alice in California   September 10th, 2009 12:41 am ET

I had no idea who Rep. Joe Wilson was before President Obama's speech and have no interest in him after it. He is a petty, ill mannered slob from what I can tell who has no business in the political arena. I'm glad that his party was embarrassed by him now I hope that they vote the loser out next time around.

T'SAH from Virginia   September 10th, 2009 12:41 am ET

Just like in the REPUBLI-CAN'T's Town Hall Meetings – the crowds curse and threaten President Obama. It was NOT a mistake he blurted out!!! He meant to say what he said and he meant to blurt it out!! APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!!!

houstontx@50   September 10th, 2009 12:40 am ET

steven harnack   September 10th, 2009 12:39 am ET

Republicans have no class and no shame.

barbara Sonies   September 10th, 2009 12:38 am ET

I was most impressed with the Presidents speech , and as a senior citizen, I am most hopeful that we can pass a public plan option while we look to cut costs for litigation that increases costs. I am so concerned that Republicans have been defiant without any true plan and that they are so belligerent without concern for the country's health.

I think it is up to Congress to construct and pass a plan within the guidelines set out by PresidentObama. I feel Republicans should be ashamed of their reactions and spreading of lies and fear through the country.

T-Ruff   September 10th, 2009 12:36 am ET

Your conduct during the Presidential address was extremely immature and deplorable. You are a terrible representative for our state of South Carolina. Your conduct suggest to our youth that it is ok to be disrespectful if you disagree....What message does that send to our youth, what message does that send to our country...You are unfit to represent the great state of South Carolina.

John Black Hills/SD   September 10th, 2009 12:36 am ET

This kind of behavior by a US Congressman, who represents his states constituency is nothing but irresponsible and unprofessional. Rep. Wilson should hold himself to a standard that young people, who are still in school, would be looking at federal representatives Rep. Wilson, as role models. His apology was correct, but his act of total disrespect from his rant is embedded in peoples memories, and it represents your true nature. President Obama didn't just throw his health care reform up in one evening, by the office responsible for putting a program together no one can understand. Then everyone will forget, and four years have passed. The White House website gives you the story in black and white, there's no reason not to understand his proposal, unless your to lazy to read.

Pragmatic   September 10th, 2009 12:34 am ET

Wilson, one of the faces of the republican hate-squad, shows that bipartisanship is truly dead and gone. I can not imagine any Democrat crass enough to ever behave so badly in the halls of Congress. Wilson can not even be civil.

Ndubueze Chuku   September 10th, 2009 12:34 am ET

This Congressman, Joe Wilson is a disgrace to South carolina. Barely a few months after Governor Mark Sanford rubbed mud on the faces of south carolinians, this idiot of a man has gone a step further, coating it with faeces. Let's be CIVIL.

suzyku   September 10th, 2009 12:33 am ET

Wilson is not only a liar but also a jerk! He embarrassed himself in front of the whole country and just proved that he has no place representing anyone except for the worst this country has to offer, he should know after all he's one of the worst!

Blue   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

It is time for Rep. Wilson to go. If he can't control his emotions, the people of his district deserves better.

Kathy Kuletz   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

Joe Wilson simply perpetuates the bankrupt Republican response to all of the problems left to us by eight years of republican miss-rule. That is – no response worth repeating. They have no constructive suggestions- they can only scream invectives because they have no useful input. They left this country in a shambles, and they will howl for Obama to fail until people come to their senses and stop listening to their whining. Joe Wilson should go get a job he is worthy of.

Johnny DC   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

At least one man in the room was telling the truth.

Nathaniel   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

CENSURE JOE WILSON

The jerk should be censured for the deplorable act of calling the President a liar before a joint session of congress. Attacking any member directly or indirectly is a violation of the House rules and a violation of the rules to attack the President directly. If he does not get punished – regardless of an apology – then it will open the door for even worse behavior in the future.

Members of the House are supposed to be honorable ladies and gentlemen and argue the issues. NEVER are there to be personal attacks on individuals as that behavior in a debate reflects a lack of ideas. CENSURE CENSURE CENSURE and teach the MCs that they cannot behave as if the Congress were one of their town meetings.

Shawn   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

Mr. Wilson, I don't think you did anything wrong at all. You said what you thought in a way that couldn't be ignored. It was completely non-violent. It was pithy. It was direct. Your constituents were screaming it at the tv set..and you relayed the message. Thank YOU!!

Gamal   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

Too late for that Joe...you're DONE!

Brian Stemmler   September 10th, 2009 12:30 am ET

While I applaud the swift reaction by both parties to this disrespectful outburst, I'm concerned that this signifies the start of the what I call "Jerry Springerfication" of politics. Both parties should be very wary of this slippery slope...respect of ones colleagues in the political arena is just as sacred as I believe the Constitution. Disrespecting your fellow politicians is in my view the same as disrespecting the founding principles of the United States.

dynamicjohn   September 10th, 2009 12:29 am ET

wilson could be disrespectful, but I think that there is more to it than that. First, he is a racist – there is no doubt. Second he has the best insurance money can buy and, finally, he Just dosnt care because his family will never live on this planet to walk in the shoes of the underprivileged.
Keep it going obama, for it is the best legislation from "above"

Sara   September 10th, 2009 12:28 am ET

Here's yet another appalling show of disrespect for our Commander in Chief from across the aisle. Perhaps Mr. Wilson should go on retreat with Governor Sanford while they get their "emotions" under control.

alan   September 10th, 2009 12:28 am ET

this guy just blew up any ground the republicans had to stand on. by that petty outburst, all who watched realized how absolutly childish the politics of obstructionism are.

Jim Swyler   September 10th, 2009 12:27 am ET

This kind of disrespectful gutter tactic is what confirms that our political system is still influenced by 20th century thinkers (read political hacks) and 20th century thinking

billp   September 10th, 2009 12:27 am ET

Should Wilson be defeated for re-election next year, he'll get a cushy job with the RNC or some conservative think tank for taking the fall on this.

The GOP Congressional leadership regularly boasts about their party discipline. It's highly unlikely that this was an unauthorized outburst.

More likely, behind closed doors Wilson jumped be the one to heckle the President when they were looking for a volunteer. If it wasn't received well, then he would say he was acting alone and take the full heat.

The purpose has been served; red meat has been thrown to the base, and Wilson will be rewarded.

Kris in CA   September 10th, 2009 12:25 am ET

Obama was a tragic figure tonight. Tired, hollow insincere, fradulent. It was hard to follow what he said it was so absurd. The implementation of such a plan is not feasible. Paying, monitoring and servicing such a program is not possible on such a huge scale with no funding source. It is absurd. No one in his right mind believes what he said tonight. No one.

Anonymous   September 10th, 2009 12:25 am ET

Barbara,TX   September 10th, 2009 12:23 am ET

Joe Wilson's hackling was disrespectful, rude, and heartless toward our and his President of the United States. How can a person with his lack of dignity and respect on office at any level especially Senate level. On my job that is insubornate, and subject to lose of your job...Well the people need to speak out . This person need to be released of his services...Racism is live and very strong in South Carolina. EVEN WHEN YOU BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. no respect is given ..Joe Wilson is a very sad and ungodly person. VOTE HIM OUT.

Jim   September 10th, 2009 12:22 am ET

Is it just me, or is Congress and the Senate becoming less and less civilized? This dis-respect towards the President is the latest in these indications. And no, I don't think the Republicans are the only ones at fault. The Democrats have also escalated their tactics to be rude and offensive. I just hope that the men and women who represent us learn from this and begin to have a more concilliatory tone.

frances s.   September 10th, 2009 12:22 am ET

Rep. Wilson is an embarresment to the United States of America. What an outrage! There are no words to express my feeling about what Mr. Wilson has done. I don't think he is worthy of is position, apology or not. Now we don't have to wonder why there are so many people out of control at these town hall meeting and else where, if it is allowed at the level of office in which Mr. Wilson holds. Shame,Shame and sad. What next???? NO president deserves such disrespect.

Rahm: "We can disagree without being disagreeable. That was the point of the President's speech." Yes that's what ADULTS do, but unfortunately there aren't any in the Republican party.

Politicalicious.com   September 10th, 2009 12:20 am ET

We shouldn’t have to wait long to see how seriously the Republican opposition takes Obama’s threats. In fact, Rep. Joe Wilson’s completely inappropriate comments (shouting “you lie” during the speech) demonstrates how far the decorum in the opposition has fallen. Although Republicans were quick to publicly denounce Wilson’s heckling, it was nonetheless their brethren and provides a very visual and objective rationale for Obama’s strong rhetorical tone. Perhaps enough is enough…and it’s time for serious proposals and discussion from both sides of the aisle.

Craig D   September 10th, 2009 12:20 am ET

Mr. Wilson, your outburst is a reflection of the lack of civility we see among our political leaders. What do we say to our children when our leaders show such disdain for the President of the United States of America? Can we ever agree to disagree and still remain fellow citizens?

Luke Brown   September 10th, 2009 12:16 am ET

Why would anyone be surprised at Congressman Wilson's disgraceful behavior. South Carolina's GOP includes Mark Sanford (fornicator & liar), Thomas Ravenel (drug addict,) and Jim DeMint (dumbest member of the US Senate).

When will the state get rid of these idiots????

John Adams   September 10th, 2009 12:14 am ET

The Congressional Infant; and I say infant because a real man or woman who was elected to serve this country would NEVER act in such a unpatriotic, child-like manner, showed a dis-service to himself, his state and the country.

Oregon J   September 10th, 2009 12:14 am ET

This is exactly the problem with the Republican party. They don't care about America. Health care and the well being of humans needs to be a right not a commodity. Republicans are the same ones that keep trying to sell you WMD's in IRAQ and they are trying the same thing again on health care. If you buy into it Republican propaganda again, you are the biggest sucker in the world, and I have some ocean front property for you in Arizona. Even John McCain should understand that.

Gigi Jones   September 10th, 2009 12:13 am ET

I'm glad that Rep. Wilson apologized, but I am puzzled, since he had a copy of the speech and he knew what was coming. How could he make a mistake, and yell out something so insulting to the President of the United States? Had he written those words on his copy of the speech? Was he thinking he and some of his seat mates were all going to yell at the same time, but he was the only one that actually did it? Humph, no honor among thieves, or Republicans, I guess.

MrPragmatic   September 10th, 2009 12:12 am ET

Too late. He already did the damage. Did he expect his rating to go up for such an outburst?
With all the ruckus that is happening because of the GOP and then the rr (conservative Christians) praying for President Obama to fail or die, while i never had any trust in their actions or policies, I certainly do not now.
I don't recall the Democrats making outbursts like this when Bush was president. I doubt it would have been tolerated.
The state of politics in our country has dropped to a new low. Personally, I've never really like either party because each seems more concerned about keeping power, stopping the other party from succeeding and little to no concern for the average citizen, of whom they were elected to protect and help.
GOP, I'll never support you in anything again.

Ron   September 10th, 2009 12:06 am ET

Too late. He already did the damage. Did he expect his rating to go up for such an outburst?
With all the ruckus that is happening because of the GOP and then the rr (conservative Christians) praying for President Obama to fail or die, while i never had any trust in their actions or policies, I certainly do not now.

Wilson should step down. He is unpatriotic and unAmerican!! To disrespect your Commander in Chief as he did is totally and completely unacceptable. I have a funny feeling that the only good that will come out of that comment is that it will make Americans see what the right is really all about and let's not forget the next election cycle..........his Democratic opponent, no doubt, is smiling from ear to ear!!!

Larry   September 10th, 2009 12:03 am ET

Apology NOT accepted Mr Wilson

Pack your bags and leave NOW ...

You obviously are not up to properly representing this country in the capacity for which you were elected

Don't let the door hit you on the way out ...

JIlli   September 10th, 2009 12:02 am ET

Shameful, absolutely shameful. I have never witnesses such a lack of civility from any elected official. Grow up Mr. Wilson. Absolutely pathetic.

Kwame Michel   September 10th, 2009 12:01 am ET

I wonder why when this president tries to reach out to the republicans at every turn he's meet with so much disdain. It's so obvious that his ability to convey his message are threatening that they will do whatever it takes to make things difficult for him. "A change is going to come"!

Evan Blum   September 10th, 2009 12:01 am ET

How dare he. He has no appriciation for our government or the president. I am a democrat that also believes many republican ideals as well. the simple fact of the matter is no matter what side left or right his comment is outragous and he must resign. In other countries he would be getting the death penalty. but he has taken advantage of the freedom of speech. My opinion is that we implicate the very bill he was in support of after 9/11 and detain him without cause indefinately under the patriot act. He discusts me. we are americans, and no matter the individuals politics this is outragous and we as american have to be better than that. We have to be better for the worlds sake and for ours.

Douglas Evans   September 10th, 2009 12:01 am ET

He should be reprimanded and disciplined by the President and Congress for his disrespectful and obnoxious behavior.

Republicans are the American Taliban   September 10th, 2009 12:01 am ET

I'm sorry for yellin FIRE!!!

historian   September 10th, 2009 12:01 am ET

Joe Wilson should be suspended from office and be required to attend anger management training before returning to office. Apparently he lacks education and self-control. This man is crude, shameful and an embarrassment to the American people!

Shame on Republicans!   September 9th, 2009 11:59 pm ET

What a disrespecftul and disgraceful excuse for a scumbag.

Ronald Barr   September 9th, 2009 11:59 pm ET

That guy is a raciest.President Obama could have walked on water he would say there is no water send him back where he came from.

Otto   September 9th, 2009 11:59 pm ET

I guess it's only a matter of time before the Repubs start throwing shoes at him. How much lower can the go?

Lenny, Dallas   September 9th, 2009 11:59 pm ET

Rep Wilson exemplified everything that is wrong with the Republican Party and is unfit to be a member of the House of Representatives. One would expect behavior like this from a teenager and not someone who is paid a $174,000 by taxpayers each year to write the nations laws.

Behavior like this makes many democrats take the view that this has nothing to do with policy formulation and everything to do with racism. Even though I would not call Rep Wilson a racist, it is safe to say his first exposure to the national limelight was ugly and limits the credibility of his party.

Richard Green   September 9th, 2009 11:57 pm ET

DISPICABLE!!!!

The ultimate demonstration of disrespect, contempt and possibly hatred.

Even as Bush and his mob led us into an unjust war, not a single democrat stood and called the president a liar before a global audience.

Monique August   September 9th, 2009 11:56 pm ET

Disgusting abuse of position. Joe Wilson needs to watchout. Someone is already digging in your personal closet for that one.

vote him out   September 9th, 2009 11:56 pm ET

Looser looser you dont represent this country with your ignorant outburste and dont tell us you got carried away as you were already carried away with the bible thumpers/you not only dont represent this country you also fail the world.
You just showed us what you are a looser.

who choose this Wilson nuts to house of rep??.....i think its time to throw every republicans out from Washington in order to move forward, these party of NO cant do anything or let some one else do anything and want it to run like they been running since last 8 yrs.....

Shavon   September 9th, 2009 11:52 pm ET

This just shows how divided the government is and how much disrespect the members have for Obama. People are so uncomfortable with change and Obama is unprecedented change.

DeminUtah   September 9th, 2009 11:52 pm ET

American   September 9th, 2009 11:50 pm ET

This shows the hate some americans have for the first Black President. This would not have been as bad if it were just some Joe Blow off the street. It was an elected official. If nothing else he could have respected the the position of the Presidency even if he did not like the man.

CNN needs to call the republicans on the Hate they express for what it is and not gloss it over. Racism is at the core of all this noise going on.

Pam   September 9th, 2009 11:50 pm ET

He shouted "you lie" on national tv, he need to apologize on national tv.

Susan   September 9th, 2009 11:49 pm ET

Evidently Wilson can't disagree without being disagreeable. When every network called him on HIS lie, then he decided to call and apologize. He really should get on TV and apologize for all the lies being told by his party.
Only then will this get done.

Vickie Voukidis   September 9th, 2009 11:49 pm ET

Rep. Joe Wilson's disrespectful outburst represents the lowest display of conduct toward a President of the United States ever displayed. He should be ashamed of himself and the people of the State of South Carolina should be outraged and call for his resignation.

Clearly, Mr. Wilson lacks the "character" of a true American that President Obama spoke of.

Shame on Wilson and every Republican who shares his bullying, intimidation and scare tactics!

Tom   September 9th, 2009 11:49 pm ET

I could not be more offended by anything than seeing Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Nancy Pelosi sitting in front of that flag.

kman821   September 9th, 2009 11:49 pm ET

Well, at least those morons who ruined so many town hall meetings across the country with their ignorant and often hate-filled rants were well-represented by the equaly ignorant Rep. Joe Wilson. Nice work Joe ... I'm sure your family is very proud of you!!

Lynn   September 9th, 2009 11:48 pm ET

It is never ever OK for an elected official to disrespect the POTUS in this way during a speech televised around the world. It makes us look like a nation without honor, dignity, or respect. An apology phoned in to the Chief of Staff does not make up for embarrassing the nation the way Rep. Wilson did tonight.

I am not very political. I am, however, deeply saddened by the lack of respect for this President. There is no patriotism in that no matter how you spin it.

ShiWms n Phx AZ   September 9th, 2009 11:48 pm ET

Hmmm. mr wilson...you lost your good n few senses for just a second...but you know whos in CHARGE. GO DEMOCRATS. Relugs have showed their asses long enough...of the bs...

Sam Bullit   September 9th, 2009 11:47 pm ET

That was the most disgraceful and disrespectful action I have ever seen an American Congressman make to a President of the United States of America. Being an independant I willfully listen to both sides of any political argument but that single action by South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson was disgraceful and disrespectful not only to the President but to all Americans. I now truly believe the Republican party is far out of touch with what is best for America and any plans for its future greatness, and that the Republican party is an obstacle to America's success.

kim   September 9th, 2009 11:46 pm ET

I thought the speech dispelled the untruths regarding health-care reform such as government sponsored abortions and life or death decisions regarding senior citizens. I thought the President also presented accurate parallels with the social security act and medicare initiatives . It amazes me that we Americans have such short memories. Would the average American today want to give up their social security benefits or medicare? Having said all that, it dosen't matter what the President said or did not say. Some people will not be receptive to anything President Obama says because their political party is not in the White House. I am glad that our President is a leader with thick skin! The media coverage of who likes or dislikes the President does not help the situation either. The constant media coverage of the backward, uneducated, and bigoted remarks just adds fuel to the fodder. Isn't it great to be an American!

Nikki Oldaker   September 9th, 2009 11:44 pm ET

Was that the first time ever a congressperson called a President a liar during an address to Congress? Just my opinion – but when tempers are this heated over a Health bill – it's time for both parties to sit down – run the numbers and be realistic about what people can afford. the economy is down, millions without jobs, people barely able to get by with inflation, the banks refusing to extend credit even after Congress gave them billions – how are people going to afford another man-dated monthly expense? If they stop feeding little Johhny – to pay the health insurance – then yes – it will be a neccessary to bring him to the hospital...This will not hurt the insurance companies because it will fill their coffers when "everyone" has to pay up. But it will hurt the banks when people don't pay their mortgages...sure they'll have great insurance -which they'll need for sure with no roof over their heads and cheap hot dogs in their bellies,

JOPY   September 9th, 2009 11:44 pm ET

joe wilson R-hyena, shame on your mother who brought you up this way.

david cairoli   September 9th, 2009 11:43 pm ET

The President's call for civility amid honest discussion of important issues is the least we should expect from our Congress. Rep Joe Wilsons disgraceful behavior and the Republicans sitting on their hands are not what the American public deserves on such an important issue as health care. The faceless/nameless special interest ads post the speeech on national TV also demonstate that many with only political motives and special interest groups are trying to highjack this historic and important discussion.
Shame on Rep. Wilson. The Republicans are showing why we voted them out of control of the government.

independent   September 9th, 2009 11:43 pm ET

Why would anyone be surprised by this outburst. A Republican from South Caroline – that should say it all. I don't care who is a Republican anymore after this year – none of them will have my vote at any level of government.

wdr   September 9th, 2009 11:42 pm ET

When is Obama going to apologize to all the people he called liars in his speech?

J   September 9th, 2009 11:42 pm ET

Rahm Emanuel is way more professional than Joe Wilson
We can disagree without being disagreeable that what "Adults" do which unfortuantely, that wasn't how Joe Wilson behave.

T Mckinley   September 9th, 2009 11:42 pm ET

Joe Wilson should do more than just apologize. Joe Wilson should RESIGN!

Jim in Indiana   September 9th, 2009 11:41 pm ET

Does anyone remember when republicans used to act like adults. I do but I'm really old. Maybe when the next generation of republicans grow they will act like grown ups. Don't expect the Limbaugh generation to ever change.

bella   September 9th, 2009 11:41 pm ET

Thank you, Mr. Wilson, for personally contacting President Obama and apologizing for your disrespectful and rude remark. We all have been placed in situations when we speak before we think! And, knowing President Obama as I do, I'm sure he accepted your apology!

normajean   September 9th, 2009 11:40 pm ET

Mr Wilson, having made a fool of himself in front of the entire country, quickly apologized for his untimely outburst during the presidents speech, calling him a liar, however neglected to add that HE was the liar.Somehow, though, we the people have had a season of attempting to sift through the lies to find the truth from the Republicans and we are now just about cynical enough not to believe anything they say.

SmallBizIllinois   September 9th, 2009 11:39 pm ET

Absolutely deplorable but not unpredictable. I don't care how much you disagree or dissent. The setting calls for decorum and this nitwit showed very plainly that he and many like him have no class at all. I disagree with the President on many many things- but Joe Wilson's behavior are completely and totally out of line and fully indefensible on any level. This is not NASCAR- it's an address by the President to the Congress of the United States. John Anderson ran for President in 1976 and he said something that has always stuck with me. "The strength of a great nation is shown through its restraint". Congressman Wilson should learn a little restraint and certainly some manners. Shameful- absolutely shameful

eolufemi   September 9th, 2009 11:39 pm ET

Hopefully, he resigns. SC has been drug through the mud and embarrassed too much in recent months by their leadership. He is just reinforcing stereotypes about south carolinians being uncouth and ignorant.

Ruth   September 9th, 2009 11:38 pm ET

Apparently the gentleman from the great state of South Carolina is no gentleman at all.He is an embarrassment to his state and country. To call the President of our nation a liar in a joint session on national television
is tantamount to treason. Off with his head....hope his insurance will cover that.

Lisa J in AZ   September 9th, 2009 11:38 pm ET

Unfortunate and regrettable behavior from someone whom more is expected. There was nothing to do but apologize if he has any hope for re-election. Wise political move but probably not one he wanted to make. Unbelievably disrespectful. Poor South Carolina! Is this what you have to deal with it time and time again?

Cheri Abraham   September 9th, 2009 11:38 pm ET

Those that interrupted our president's speech by disrespectful heckling should face some sort of punishment. The republicans are obviously out of hand. I hope that Congress has the fortitude to follow through.

General Peay   September 9th, 2009 11:38 pm ET

Wilson apologized, but he fails to admit that he(Wilson) was wrong and that Obama was right as the proposal clearly states illegal immigrants will nt be covered. Read the bill first Rep Wilson because now you look like a total fool and have dsgrace the State of South Carolina.

Claudia C   September 9th, 2009 11:37 pm ET

I emailed the GOP Chairman to express my disgust with the way the Republicans in congress conducted themselves tonight. It wasn't just this mannerless creep, there were Republicans texting throughout the speech and waving papers at President Obama.

A white president NEVER would have been treated with such rudeness and disrespect.

I am just horrified by the behavior of these so-called "statesmen".

Treat Others as You Would Like to be Treated   September 9th, 2009 11:37 pm ET

Joe Wilson is a rude ignorant jerk and an embarrassment to all of South Carolina. He is a career political hack corrupted by lobbyists and has no business serving in the House. No one should disrespect the President like he did, shouting and interrupting as if he were part of an angry mob. Wilson is the one who lies because illegal immigrants are specifically excluded. Wilson has shamed himself and his state and should take responsibility for his disrespectful, outrageous outburst and resign.

CG   September 9th, 2009 11:37 pm ET

Good of him to apologize , but doubt seriously it came from the heart!
Another slap on the South and on his state.

John Barnacastle   September 9th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

My wife and I live in Alabama. Thank God for South Carolina.

Bridget   September 9th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

How does one disagree with the TRUTH, Rep. Wilson? Good grief.

steve fielder   September 9th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

I truly pity the constituents in Joe Wilson's district; to be represented by such an ignorant, boorish man. I'm glad he apologized for his actions, but he should have had more class and self-control and not made a fool of himself in the first place. If he wished to voice opposition to one of the Presidents' policies, he should have made his case in the press. There is a 200-year-long sense of civility and decorum in the halls of Congress and those present are expected to behave like Ladies and Gentlemen. Old-fashioned? Perhaps, but necessary. Otherwise, our public discourse might end up looking like some drunken barroom argument; something you'd expect to see in the British Parliament!

General Peay   September 9th, 2009 11:35 pm ET

This just shows how disrespectful the GOP has become, never have I seen a representative be so disrespectful towards any President.

j   September 9th, 2009 11:35 pm ET

problem is joe wilson is right. currently the fed gov under the medicaid reimbursement plans to states pays 50% of the cost of medicaid health care and other benefits. unfortunately the states don't check immigration status ever in determining benefits. so the states award a benefir so as not to bankrupt their own hospitals and the feds pay 50%. required citizenship is the only thing that will stop this hemmorhaging of health care dollars to illegals. in our community the illegals import their sick and infirm parents who cannot get healthcare in mexico and within 48hrs are in the emergency demanding high priced health care(dialysis, cancer care and heart surgery) and they get it!! obama knows this, he's playing loose with the facts again. health care reform cannot progress without immigration reform simply due to costs. check out our local er records! its telling!

akm, CA   September 9th, 2009 11:35 pm ET

who vote for these people?

Gerry   September 9th, 2009 11:34 pm ET

When Rep. Joe Wilson disgraced himself in the presence of the entire World community, he did the one thing that the President can’t do. Rep. Wilson focused and reduced the only option that the Republicans have now: get off the angry white guy bus and join the rest of us in heath care reform. Rep. Wilson has no excuse for dishonoring the Capital of our nation and should spend some time with an anger management specialist so that he will be fit for civil society.

Tanner   September 9th, 2009 11:34 pm ET

It's nice that he did send out an apology, however why say it if you are going to retract your statement? Be a man and stand up to what you say don't apology "IF" you believed what you said was justified.

Anonymous   September 9th, 2009 11:34 pm ET

Joe Wilson was very distasteful and should have controlled his emotions. At minimum he should be fined for inappropriate behavior in a formal setting. If we allow this type of behavior to continue, others will attempt to disrespect our President. The money received from the fine should go towards decreasing the deficit. Please make an example out him.

John English   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

The GOP has a solid and sane argument against some of President Obama's policies; not necessarily arguments that I am swayed by, but they are arguments and positions that I have considered and taken into account. They should stick to a civil and respectful advancement of their core arguments against big government, and a run-up of deficits, etc. Acting like hooligans and pouting like children is "talking" so loudly that it is drowning out any chance that their reasoned arguments will be heard by the very centrists like myself that they need to win over.

Jayden,FL   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

Speaker Pelosi looked like she wanted to get up and whoop some you know what lol

Deep South Independent   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

What is wrong with the Republicans from SC (and other parts of the South)?!! It may play well with your base, but that's it, you're disgraceful and embarassing to everyone else in the country. Not the way to be taken seriously- you can share ideas, even disagree but always be respectful, or no one will pay you any attention.

The GOP is becoming a sad joke, but it's not funny, I'm not laughing-

Wes   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

MOB mentality in the capital building is unacceptable. If he wants to be that way he should take it out into the streets with the rest of the uninformed. South Carolina should be very embarrassed by who is running their state and should not vote for him in any future elections.

Melinda   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

This is the ugliness that the Republican party has come to represent. And to think how many times they called someone un-American for just disagreeing with President Bush's policies.

justsane   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

he needs to apologize to all americans.

seanm   September 9th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

kravitz   September 9th, 2009 11:31 pm ET

I think the real problem is Wilson just confirmed all the nutty things people are saying about the republicans are indeed true.

nick in SF   September 9th, 2009 11:31 pm ET

Rahm is a better man than me. Now he has to say he is sorry to Rush for saying that he was sorry to the president. They really need help.

Matt T   September 9th, 2009 11:31 pm ET

is this what the republicans want to be known as? people whom make statements that arent true? and disrupt the speech? i hope they get voted out. I only wish the Chief of Staff hung up on him.

coco   September 9th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

Never heard of Rep. Joe Wilson before, but I never will forget him and not in a good way! Glad he apologized, but that doesn't erase the so inappropriate heckling. That's what he will be remembered for. He will also remind all of the white fans some other innappropriate people were using!

randy   September 9th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

i was really mad at this congress man, is he calling obama a liar in what ground obama was saying the truth.

Chin-Tai Kim   September 9th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

Joe Wilson defamed his party and his country. President Obama's speech shamed him so, he responded with his desperate wish that Obama was lying. Do Republicans ever worry about how they and their country are being perceived around the world? Foreigners must view the US as a country divided into racist lunatics and a coalition of diverse progressive people who because of their gentility are in danger of being defeated.

nelda castaneda   September 9th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

Rep. Joe Wilson is a disgrace to his people and he obviously does not have respect for the highest public office in America. He probably detests the idea of having an African American president and hate just comes out of him. It is shameful that we still live in a country that hasn't progressed as much as people "pretend" it has.

He should fear God's judgement.

TKW-New Mexico   September 9th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

I am really sick of these Republican fools in Congress! SICK, SICK AND MORE SICK! They don't have any ideas, but they want to criticize the people who do have ideas. They have plenty of time to come up with a plan and where is it? I haven't heard anything constructive but lies and slander. At least the democrats are trying to make life better for American families. This outburst was another example of why the Republican clowns lost so badly in November 2008! That was so disrespectful. Even if you don't agree with the President, respect his position!

DEBBInola   September 9th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

Was a great speech and he made what he wanted very clear, and checked the lies being said, by SARAH PALIN and others..
Love the idea of requiring everyone to have the insurance, just like car insurance we must all have ..
Competition too, hopefully that will make all our insurance companies drop, its getting crazy.
The S.C. REPUBLICAN Joe Wilson I believe, that screeched and heckled the President of the United States stunned me, was very disrespectful, and showed the maturity level of some on that side. Where did he think he was, I would be very embarrassed if he was from our area?
The republican response, a Louisianian, and although he and I have different ideals/politics, he did very well and didn't embarrass us as Jindal did when he tried awhile ago....

Joel Weymouth   September 9th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

It may have been bad manners, but it is simply the way that things are going and what many Americans are thinking. I think the time of politeness has long been over: the radical left did away with it over 20 years ago under Reagan. It will get violent before this is over: and maybe that is good. The left and right/Free Market and Socialism/Conservatism and Liberalism are diametrically opposing beliefs: how can they peacefully coexist?

New Democrat   September 9th, 2009 11:28 pm ET

disrespectful....to the floor...cant this idiot read to know that the plan does not cover illegal immigrants....I believe the people who oppose this plan did not or cannot read....thats make them white gop ...another name for idiots....a disgrace to tax payers.

Len (Colorado)   September 9th, 2009 11:28 pm ET

The apology is not acceptable. The bill is very clear that illegal immigrants will not be covered. Rep. Wilson direspected President Obama and the Office of the Presidency. He should be removed from office. He is the Liar and unamerican.

E Evans   September 9th, 2009 11:28 pm ET

Well, isn't that nice? A US Congressman calling the the President of the United States a liar during a joint session of Congress needs to do a lot more than apologize. This would be disgraceful behavior from a 15-year old. I wonder what the Republicans would have said if a Democrat did a similar thing when Bush repeatedly lied to the American people about the war in Iraq.

Becky in Ohio   September 9th, 2009 11:27 pm ET

I would LOVE to hear all that Rahm had to say.

Mike   September 9th, 2009 11:27 pm ET

Joe Wilson should apologise to the american people for wasting our time. If the republicans want to be part of the solution they must stop this disrespectful atomosphere and get to work. If I did what they did at my job I would be fired immedeately. Guess what, keep it up and you will lose more seats and then there will be no balance in the house or senate.

Kaci   September 9th, 2009 11:27 pm ET

No wonder the crazed fringe continues to foam at the mouth – this guy is an embarrassment to South Carolinians and Americans. When will this madness end? In my 50 years I have never seen such disrespect for the leader of our country. Whether you agree or disagree, the lack of disrespect for the office and officeholder is astonishing. Or is it? The status quo sees their stranglehold on this nation diminishing, their fat cat supporters and lobbyists throwing money at them like they have velcro on coming to an end, and a centurys old belief that they are supreme in total jeopardy. I guess that fear has turned to anger and complete loss of civility. Can't wait for the reaping to begin.

kravitz   September 9th, 2009 11:26 pm ET

More favorite headlines of the night. From The Examiner. "GOP plans quiet demonstration during president's speech" by Byron York. And the rather precious "Boustany had three malpractice suits" by Glenn Thrush at Politico. Well, after the trainwrecking they've done to themselves, I sure don't want the GOP in charge of turning on even my water sprinklers!

VGal   September 9th, 2009 11:26 pm ET

Mischelle   September 9th, 2009 11:22 pm ET

Publicity and more publicity. The cat is out of the bag for anybody who is unaware of how this legislation not only does not exclude illegal immigrants specifically (no proof of citizenship is required), it ignores the fact that taxpayers will continue to bear an unfair burden in treating illegal immigrants with every modern screening and diagnostic test available when they enter through the Emergency Room doors. To avoid lawsuits down the road, hospitals must repeatedly administer the same tests for the same problem each and everytime an illegal (or any uninsured patient) seeks care.

As a matter of fact, they may very well receive superior care and diagnosis than most of us receive on arrival at our family physician's office.

Tracy-Oakley   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

His stripes are now shown, he's still a loser!!

C.G. Charpentier   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Wilson's outburst is to say the least extremely shameful. He either did not listen carefully to the President's remarks or was blinded by his own ignorance.

To disagree with the President is one thing; to call him a liar is totally reprehensible and out of line.

I hope his constituents will choose next time around to be represented by someone who is respectful of others and in particular the President.

Jim K   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

He needs to be reprimanded and the be removed from office for his childish outburst.

Nip this kind of behavior in the bud.

Anonymous   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

What a idiot!

xargaw   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Disgraceful. He sullied his office and the chamber. He is unworthy of being a Congressman. Great message to send the kids, Congressman!

Daniel   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

The question we want answered is not about the political theater, but "who's right?" Are illegal immigrants going to be covered by a public plan? Does this open the door for more government services for illegals who are already not paying into the system? These are important questions? If Obama's lying, Wilson is an American hero.

Fitima   September 9th, 2009 11:21 pm ET

Rep. Joe Wilson is a disgrace and should be forced to resign. He has no respect for the government nor the President of the United States. He is an absolute IDIOT!

Kent in CA   September 9th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

This Representative needs to make a clear statement, based on the various proposals being considered, exactly how these proposals will insure illegal aliens. If he does not do that, he has commited slander. That would mame him the liar, not the President. So, share the facts, Congressman.

Barry Grissom   September 9th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

Cong. Wilson is an embarrassment to SC and his district, not to mention the House Republicans. His mother, if he knows who she is, would be embarrassed.

Thomas G   September 9th, 2009 11:20 pm ET

I've lived in South Carolina for 30 years, and until very recently was a Republican. Joe Wilson exemplifies everything that is wrong with the party I once was proud to cast my vote for. Instead of constructive debate, we have something that looks like an episode of Jerry Springer. In the place of a civil conversation, there's shouting, smears and disinformation. I (sadly) now expect disruptions at town hall meetings, but to shout "LIE" to the President of the United States, during a speech to joint members? Unbelievable. I think even Strom Thurman is turning in his grave.

Ellid   September 9th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Wilson should resign immediately. Whether or not he likes the President personally or agrees with his policies, the disrespect to the office of the Presidency was inexcusable for any citizen, let alone a member of Congress.

Jen   September 9th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Rep.Joe Wilson needed to apologize after the way he spoke to President Obama tonight during his speech. No matter from what political party you are from or where you stand on Health Care Reform, you don't speak to the President of the United States in that matter. Very disrespectful.

jj   September 9th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

No apology from this idiot will placate me or millions of Americans who were sickened not only by the disgusting disrespect Wilson showed President Obama and the office of the Presidency. As for all the heckling by the GOP nitwits, they showed their true colors. Check the speech and see how many times they sat on their hands when the President talked about healthcare and helping the average American. Lastly, Eric Cantor owes and apology for texting during the President's speech. The lack of basic civility by the GOP members in the hall surprised and sickened even someone like me, who thought that Republicans could go no lower. They can and did. Sickening!

levi davis   September 9th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

Levi
The American lawmakes are causing all this problem
Nothing will get done , Too many people with their owned idias
With all parties
When are they going to start thinking about us we the people
The media is not helping , Please talked about some good stuff which is going on instead of the all sad stories
I need to be stress free for a day or two

Cy Sharp   September 9th, 2009 11:19 pm ET

HUMP! He needs to apologize to the American public while he's at it. What a unnecessary display of childish behavior... I cannot believe he's actually representing a state. God Bless South Carolina....

Lynne   September 9th, 2009 11:18 pm ET

CNN has reported over and over again that none of the bills proposed will cover health insurance for illegal immigrants. The point is not just that Wilson was disrespectful but that he was inaccurate as well. I hope CNN will interview him and press him on this point as well.

An elected official who is so disrespectful and lacking in any class is only apologizing because of the outrage he is receiving not for any wrong he thinks he has committed. this is the type of attitude the Republicans are bringing out in people and preventing factual, rational debate.

riceroni   September 9th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

It's the least he can do, it was downright despicable and disrespectful.

Stephani   September 9th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

Called the White House? Noooo not good enough. He should be made to apologize in front of everyone he offended – and that's most of the American Public.

CTGIRL   September 9th, 2009 11:17 pm ET

I am happy he got through to Rahm. I can only imagine how many meffers Rahm shared with him during that conversation.

Gwendolyn   September 9th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

The tone of disrespect was set yesterday by the Republicans that claimed the President's speech to the children was socialism. The Department of Education owes the President, the students and the parents an apology for the blatant disrepect of the President by not showing the speech yesterday. When the President speaks, everyone should listen. This is out of respect for his position, title and that he is the Commander in Charge. Rep. Wilson should be removed from his position. There is no excuse for his behavior. I have never heard of anything like this in my life. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, President Obama is your President. We should have a zero tolerance for disrespecting our President. Never in history has a President speech to children have to be sensored. Do not confused your rights as an opportunity to be disrespectful to our leader (President Obama).

Jide   September 9th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

Fire !!! Aim !!! Ready !!! He just tarnished his reputation.Sure got himself in the history books..Way to go !!!!..

BEVERLY CHILDRESS   September 9th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

Rep Joe Wilson's apology was proabably encrouaged by his senior republicans. I do not think that he meant it sincerely and that it was only empty words. His attitude is just typical of the Republican party and right wingers who has no respect for this president, simply because of the color of his skin.

steve   September 9th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

Rep Joe wilson (R) is a disgrace to the nation.
He demonstrated how low the republican party has sunk.
You would be remembered as the RACIST poster boy of your party.

fred   September 9th, 2009 11:15 pm ET

Good, he should, and he should be ashamed of himself. I'm no Democrat, but that was out of line~

JIlly in SC   September 9th, 2009 11:14 pm ET

As a resident of the "RED" state of South Carolina. I am a Poud to say I never vote for the Republicans. I am usually horrified by the "back woods antics" of this State, but Mr. Wilson, you should be ashamed.
Who heckles the President of the United States? What a disgrace to your party and to our State.

On behalf of all residents of the State of South Carolina, I am sorry for Mr. Wilsons' antics. This is a direct result of his Education in this State, which last I read was 48th out of 50

pam   September 9th, 2009 11:14 pm ET

this shows how stupid joe wilson is. he is a disgrace to the people who elected him to represent them, america and the G O P.

Justin   September 9th, 2009 11:14 pm ET

What's said is said. No taking it back, and now we have a better understanding of the true nature, and insensitivity, of the GOP. I don't care who you are; you do NOT treat the President of the United States of America with this kind of dis-respect. Not called for, and not appreciated. You don't like how we run things here? Find another country, my friend.

samiam   September 9th, 2009 11:13 pm ET

They have fed this fake outrage to the American people so long that they themselves don't have a clue any longer on protocol.

Just make an ASS!! of yourself at will thats the reform republicans are pushing total anacrchy. And we want to push our democracy around the world.... HA!!

Dennis   September 9th, 2009 11:13 pm ET

Mr. Wilson should be chastised for his outburst. America gives everyone the freedom to disagree, but does not condone uncivil outbursts such as the world witnessed. Whether anyone agrees or disagrees, likes or dislikes the President, they should, at the very least, respect the office. I give Mr. Obama thumbs up for his eloquent remarks and courage to face such barbarism.

paul   September 9th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

What can you expect out of the a Southern Republican. These southern Republicans are slowly but surely destroying the fabric of our great Democracy. They are a cancer on the body politic.

Carol   September 9th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

I do not accept his aplogy..
I was a citizen watching and saw him disrespect my President.
He needs consequences for his actions.

azdem   September 9th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

Anonymous   September 9th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

Louis   September 9th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

Joe Wilson is a shameful human being who has no place in our country as an elected official! His racist attitude showed for all the world to see. Yes, RACIST!! Because there is NO WAY - whether the President was a democrat or a republican would this IDIOT have blatantly disrespected the Office if the President was white! No way!!

K. Cavanaugh   September 9th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

The hypocrisy of the extreme right wing knows no bounds. Can you imagine their reaction if a Democrat had heckled President Bush in such a fashion? And I don't remember any Democrat pulling their kids out of school when President Bush visited. They have sunk so low that they are incapable of civil debate. It's time for the level heads to take back control of the Republican party and civility to return to our political forums.

Rick from Bowie   September 9th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

Reprehensible act and an apology will not suffice. I'm donating money to any challenger for this clown's seat. Worthless pig.

wakeupamerica   September 9th, 2009 11:11 pm ET

What a poor example Rep. Joe Wilson is as a member of the House! He needs to not only apologize to President Obama but to the American people. He is a pig. I believe their is room for cordial political discourse but there needs to be civility to the President, especially when you hold an elected office. The Republicans have completely spun out of control – vote him and Boehner and Cantor and all the jerks out. They're not doing anything to move this country forward.

Jay   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

I want Republicans to keep acting like this..........it shows how out of touch and wacky they are.

jj   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

Rep. Joe Wilson who is a former Colonel should be ashamed of himself for disrespecting the President, how could he like it if i did that to him.
i call upon him to resign.

DeeDee from Nashville   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

This man owes an apology to the nation. Rep. Wilson disgraced his country, his state and his family tonight. The Joint Session of Congress was not the place to call the President a liar. I was absolutely disgusted.

Robert in West Hartford, CT   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

This was one of the most disgusting displays of a lack of decorum I have ever seen in American politics. And to support an easily proven lie????

Republicans should censor him in some way just to convince us they are sentient.

Jay T.   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

Scum bag! These lunatics are the type that put Party ahead of country. He deserves to be voted out.

CJG   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

I am glad this ill mannered congressman called to apologize ,but I would hope there will be some sort of punishment in Congress for that sort of behavior. The look on Speaker Pelosi's face was priceless. But once I learned he was from SC , the bad behavior was much more understandable.

i suppose   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

And democrats will be gracious

jos   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

Wilson called Obama out,no need for him to apologize that the king wasnt wearing any underwear.Illegals will be covered through loopholes, and Obama knows that.

Jon Krieger   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

I don't think the guy should apologize for anything! We still have something called freedom of speech in this country.no matter how badly the liberals want to hijack it!YOU GO WILSON!!!!!!

scott   September 9th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

thats what republicans are, the dumbest 10% of America.Feels like your living with a retarded step child.Although thats an insult to retarded people ,Sorry.

Sherri   September 9th, 2009 11:09 pm ET

Say it's not so, Joe. I was proud of you for standing up and speaking the truth. Why would you apologize for the truth?

Stephanie   September 9th, 2009 11:09 pm ET

Representative Joe Wilson needs to go to the floor and to the media and apologize for his disrepsectful, and unnecessary outburst during President Obamas speech. It was very distasteful in my opinion and needs to be addressed. It was total disregard for his colleagues, the American people and the President. Shame on you Joe Wilson.

ron jones   September 9th, 2009 11:09 pm ET

Maybe they should have a beer.

AP in Illinois   September 9th, 2009 11:08 pm ET

A good start. Now it's time for the rest of the GOP team to start atoning for all of the lies they have foisted on the American people about health care.

Mark Barnhart   September 9th, 2009 11:08 pm ET

Republican Rep. Joe Wilson just lost his re-election bid, because his outburst does not deserve any acceptance for his actions. It will be just punishment for him.

Carol J.   September 9th, 2009 11:08 pm ET

Your are a complete jerk. I wonder how you have lasted so long in the Senate. You have no respect for the person who is our President whether you agree or disagree this was not the format to present your views. Save it for the talk shows. I'm sure someone would be listening to you but it won't be me.

Jon   September 9th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Stupid is as stupid does, and Congressman Wilson managed to look dumber and more petty than anyone else tonight.

Play to the base, Joe, isn't that your game plan? You have no idea how stupid you and your ideological cohorts look to the rational 75% of the American electorate.

No Incumbents 2010   September 9th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

Rep. Joe Wilson is a rude jerk. No one should disrespect the President like he did. Wilson is free to vote however he wants on bills but should never shout and interrupt the president as if he were part of an angry mob. Wilson is the one who lies because illegal immigrants will not be covered by health reforms; they are specifically excluded. Wilson has shamed himself and his state and should take responsibility for his disrespectful, outrageous outburst and resign.

Marcin   September 9th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

I'm a republican and a very strong opponent of President Obama. With that said I'm very ashamed to be a republican today. What took place in the Chambers of Congress is a disgrace! This was a blatant disregard for the President of the United States!!! This is most disrespectful coming from a member of Congress! Presidents..ALL Presidents deserve our respect no matter who they are!! I respect President Obama fully although don't agree with him on some issues especially his Domestic Policy. I respect President Bush fully although don't agree with him on some issues as well especially with Foreign Policy. WILSON SHOULD RESIGN IMMEDIATELY!!!!!

Louise Marley   September 9th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

An apology is due not only to the president, but to the public. The last administration excited a lot of animosity, but not this flagrant rudeness. For shame, Mr. Wilson.

Latitia Tate   September 9th, 2009 11:06 pm ET

He owes the NATION an apology! His comments were public therefore his apology should be public! I recommend he go on FOX NEWS first!

Douglas Russell   September 9th, 2009 11:06 pm ET

What is in the water in South Carolina?

Just this year South Carolina politicians have given us this uber stupid "You lie!" outburst and the hilarious hike on the trail to Argentina fiasco?

Ed   September 9th, 2009 11:06 pm ET

This is a prime example of the insanity of the conservatives and the Republican Party, if a Democrat had done this to Bush during a speech they would be labeled anti american, Satan, you name it. The complete disrespect in this country for the rightfully elected President is just amazing to me. I really don't know if he should even be punished, it just doesn't show the American people or the world the right face of this country. This wasn't some hillbilly town hall meeting in some backwater, it was on the floor of the US House of Representatives. It actually is just pathetic!!

Hurley   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

Typical classless behavior from the party of superstition and lies. The GOP has been taken over by fanatical lunatics. When the USA was in their hands they let us down big time, and now they're being brats about being out of power. Why should we listen to them anymore? They haven't been right once in the past decade, and now they can't even behave like civil adults. Forget them.

Democracy at work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

This is the biggest flop I have even seen for a minority replubican party. It is a rotton egg that needs to be dumped as in the Willie Wonka chocalate factory.

jed   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

i thought rep wilson was a good guy. next time he gives a speech we'll show up and serve it back

Brittney, Virginia   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

Too late, be a man and apologize to his face.

Salvador Dalai Llama   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

Hmmm. I wonder what it is that Rahm might have replied. A pithy quote from Dick Cheney, perhaps?

kcsdsbrewer   September 9th, 2009 11:05 pm ET

I apologize as a South Carolinian for the idiocy that some of our politicians have shown over the past few months. The arrogance of some of these men is unbelievable. I don't know how they consider themselves public servants. Unfortunately, there are those who would re-elect them based on their buffoonery.

Don't do it Joe   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

He came into the office on the votes of the illegals lobby and he will slip their coverage in after the bill gets to his desk.

Ruty   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

I bet Joe Wilson's IQ matches his age.

Susan Miller   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

This was over-the-top rude and divisive. I witnessed this type of thing from Republican citizens at our local healthcare forum hosted by our NY Congressman, John Hall – but I never expected to hear this on national television from a member of Congress. Shameful.

Gary Stebnitz   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Wilson should immediately resign from his office. His behavior was inexcusable!

Grace   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Americans should be ashamed of this clown. He is so disrespectful that South Carolina should get rid of him for good. What an idiot!

RO   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Should have never happened..just hope his apology was sincere. He should be ashamed of himself.

kd   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Never heard of this guy till tonight. Amazing. With wingnuts like that in the House, we're all screwed.

Emma S   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

He should still be censured – that was the most shocking thing I've seen during a presidential speech to a joint congress session. Utterly disrespectful and I bet he felt it was okay since the President was part of "them" not real Americans. Censure him.

Tom - Denver   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Fool. But as with Stanford he is a legend in the south.

Bill Michael   September 9th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

Joe Wilson doesn't need to apologize and he shouldn't have done so. You can always tell that President Obama is lying because his lips are moving.

Will Affleck-Asch   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

He should resign.

Tonight.

Rachell   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Good for him. It was tacky and stupid, but free speech is free speech and he has every right to act like a fool in front of the nation if he wants to.

babs from Denver   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Forget apologies, censure this disrespectful jerk. He is a 5 term Representative he should know better.

The Republican lack of respect is growing and it is abominable that is has been allowed to flourish for this long.

Richard   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Wilson should be censored. You know his reaction came because he was one of those spreading the lies that president spoke about. You see, that is his way of campaining. I have a hard time grasping things nowadays. Parents not wanting their children to hear the President speak about striving to do well. There sure are some pickled minds about here.

x-rev   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Wonder how many times Rahm dropped the f bomb on the congressman? Bet he wishes he could have gotten right through to the President now, but I think that "open door" the President talked about, might be closed to him.

Alan   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Too little, too late. I can only imagine what would have happened had a Democrat heckled Bush during a joint session of Congress. Lush, Hannity and the other nutjobs would have called them traitors, Nazis, and proposed shooting them on site. Instead this Clown from SC will be all over FIX News and the Lush and Hannity shows and they'll be fawning all over him like he's a patriot...Absolutely disgusting.

Jason Martin   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Has a President EVER been heckled in such an address before like this? This reeked of such classless grandstanding, the Congressman is not any better than the lunatics screaming Hitler accusations at Town Hall meetings!

Dianne Carroll   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

This disrespect shows the hate and bias that our President has to endure. When we lose respect for these offices what are we? Fanatics spreading rumours in town halls?

don   September 9th, 2009 11:03 pm ET

the republican uncivil and hate filled lies are showing.
if you cannot stand the truth use fear.that is the tool the republican have used in the past but proving to fail in this generation as in the general election and now seemly will fail as the health care bill is on its way to pass.

Whatever Wilson   September 9th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

Wilson can keep his apology. He was totally disrespectful toward our President. He is only apologizing because no one is defending him and the negative press is overwhelming.

Mea Combs   September 9th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

I agree. This is the worst behavior I've see from anyone over 12 in a long time! Grow-up and do your job, Joe!

Ex-Republican in Philadelphia   September 9th, 2009 11:02 pm ET

What a Bozo. He shouldn't be allowed at future events. This is not the way we treat our President, regardless of our party affiliation. I'm embarrassed for South Carolinians.

Adam   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

Good of him to apologize. I still can't believe that any elected official could be so disrespectful, especially on a nationally televised speech

chad   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

He should appologize to all of America. Beyond rude and disrespectful.

Avi shlomo   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

Wilson reminds me of Israel democracy. Not only he should apologize to the President but to hos colleagus and the Country. As we may disagreed with the ommander in cheif civility is warranted and this man should be censored as he broke all norms of civil discourse. Perhaps he should immerse hismself in some disctaor deomocray so he could undersatnd and appreciate beinga citizen of a civilized country. Shame on you, you are nothing but a disgrace to this union.
I would also add that he should say that he made a big mistake by spreading a lie that is not a true and help stop the avalanche that contributed to hostility towards our president.

BW   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

Not enough. He must give a full-length apology. He disgraced the district he represents. Shameful!

Tia   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

He just ought to have! As a leader for South Carolina he should be just that–a leader. I don't think his constituents would agree that such disrespecful behavior represents their interests.

Shirley in California   September 9th, 2009 11:01 pm ET

The christian thing for Pres. Obama to do is accept it and move on but this does not excuse Wilson's behavior. It was dispictable and racist. These republicans are one set of angry people and they really don't need to ever occupy the WH again.

Steve (the real one)   September 9th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

He should have apologized. Like him or not he is still the President!
Better yet, Wilson should have kept quiet! I'm conseravtive but Sen. McCaskill is right!

B   September 9th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

Don't worry we still voting the SC Senator out!

Osha Reader   September 9th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

What an incredibly tacky remark. It exemplified the worst of American politics. Joe Wilson disgraced himself and his party. Let's hope he is unseated in the next election.

Peter Archanjo   September 9th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

I bet a took that apology right to heart and gave him a few choice words of his own. This blatant disrespect for the president shiuld not be allowed to stand.

Perusing-through   September 9th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

I'm quite sure President Obama will forgive Joe Wilson, and I'm sure his staff will be forced to go along, , , , , but there is no forgiveness here Joe "The Stupid Idiot" Wilson for insulting the seat of the Presidency. NEVER!

Morgan   September 9th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

He spoke with Rahm? That must have been colorful.

karyn   September 9th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

The punk of a politician simply wanted the spotlight. That's why the republican will never get another vote from me.

Carole   September 9th, 2009 10:59 pm ET

Was his White Sheet in or out of his closet when he was on the phone?

Margaret in NC   September 9th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Chase   September 9th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

Oh please....too little, too late.

Steph   September 9th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

What do Joe Wilson and Rahm Emanuel have in common....loud angry outbursts. I bet that was a pleasant conversation.

Samina hayat   September 9th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

I wish entire GOP should apologize ....

Kevin V Shannon   September 9th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Hell star on Rush's and other far right talk show by morning. Dumb move but what can you expect from him.

Chris, Denver, CO   September 9th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

I feel the President of the United States deserves more respect than Representative Wilson afforded tonight. I appreciate his contrition; however, calling the President a liar during a nationally televised (and very important) speech suggests a new low in the gamesmanship played out these days by the opposition. I would even recommend a referendum or recall - a censorship at least to deal with this most un-SC like behavior. I think of SC and think of southern gentlemen; however, not tonight. This looked more like behavior fit for a high school football game on Friday nights....

Kirk   September 9th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Just when you think the GOP can't stoop any lower...

Kellie   September 9th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Totally ashamed to be a Republican. You're not at a football game, meathead. It's a joint session of Congress. And on this one, you're wrong and Obama's right. Nice move.

bernice   September 9th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Would have liked to be a fly on the wall for that conversation... I hope Rahm lived up his Rep..

Idiot_Pelosi   September 9th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Joe Wilson,

I love it.

You called OBUMMER out on his lies.
