Defiant Wilson raises more than $200,000 after outburst

Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.
Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.

(CNN) - Less than a day after Rep. Joe Wilson formally apologized to President Obama over his "you lie" outburst, a campaign aide confirms to CNN the South Carolina Republican has raised "more than $200,000" in the wake of the now-infamous moment.

News of that cash haul comes after Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.

"On these issues, I will not be muzzled, I will speak up and speak loudly against this risky plan," Wilson said in a YouTube video released Thursday evening. "The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan."

The congressman disbursed the video via Twitter and asked his followers to "please watch and pass on."

"[Democrats] want to silence anyone who speaks out against it," Wilson also says in the video. "They made it clear they want to defeat me and pass the plan. I need your help now... contribute to my effort to defeat the proponents of government-run health care."

Wilson also sent a fundraising appeal via e-mail, saying he is confident "my voice is serving as the voice for Americans across the country who are tired of irresponsible government programs that have only worsened our situation."

The appeal for cash came as Wilson's Democratic opponent in next year's congressional race, Rob Miller, reported raking in $750,000 as a result of the outburst during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress. Miller ran against Wilson last year, losing by eight points. It was Wilson's smallest margin of victory in his five elections for Congress.

In an e-mail to supporters Thursday night, Miller said he is aiming to top over $1 million in the next 24 hours, a total that dwarfs the $67,000 he has took in during the entire first half of the year.

There is no excuse for the disrespectful and unprofessional conduct by the congressman from South Carolina. We are a civil society and our elected leadership should represent the populace in same manner.

Here are my thoughts on the whole matter. If I wanted to derail Health Care Reform, a good way would be to heckle and harass the President and get a negative reaction from him, his staff and DNC. By doing this I and my followers could say this program would be a government takeover, etc. etc. The only difference is, I wouldn't have thought to continue lying to get out of the backlash.

The real problem is the people who actually buy this guy's bull and vote for him. What is it with South Carolina?

Hey breaking news Joe – you are voted in office to LISTEN to the people and to represent the voices of the people. While you are apparently cashing in from other crazy-people, your official website is still shut down giving me and every other actual voter no chance to communicate with you. Pathetic and disgusting – your behavior and persona is a disgrace to the State of South Carolina.

    Message to Joe:

The 'merican people are done with you redneck conservatives and your inability to even talk with anyone who doesn't agree with your viewpoint.

So the appology wasn't an appology now, huh? Had to get the message out on video via twitter that y'all really didn't mean it THAT much. It was as if your momma made ya say sorry.

The freaks at both ends of the spectrum need to go, we need results men, not yes men, and definetly not NO men.

Sorry Joe, you fall into the freak category. Do the honorable thing and leave. Oh wait, you are a Republican. Guess you'll hang on and whine as long as you can.

You lie, Mr Wilson. And you are wrong about the health care reform. Illegals are not going to be covered. All fact checks by CNN and other agencies have shown this. Do your homework before embarrasing yourself and this nation with your next childish outburst.

Again, the South Carolina GOP just makes up facts to fit their agenda. There is no universal healthcare for illegal immigrants. There are no free abortions. There is no takeover of healthcare. Mr. Wilson is either woefully ignorant, inept, or using this for political gain. Looks like the shameless advertising he is doing is making money, so maybe you don’t have to have your hand out to the insurance companies for support. There is not Christianity in the Christian Right…oh well. Your brother’s keeper has a gun to your head!

Wilson disrespected the office of President of the United States. I recall that my history book taught that D. MacAuthur lost his job over that?

He is full of crap. I am sure those donations came from the people over at Fox. How dare he show the lack of respect he did for the President of the United States. Who cares if you don't "like" the President but respect the position. He wouldn't have dared disrespected any foreign minister in that manner so why should it be "ok" that he disrespected his own. Tired of the Republicans acting as the we the people should not trust our President. The Democrats would have never done such a thing if McCain was elected.

Wilson is a complete embarrassment. He is the perfect face of the current Republican party–boorish and pathetic. If he stays in office, maybe he should visit some underfunded schools in his home state and observe the more civil behavior of the children there.

    -------------------------------–

No one is trying to "muzzle" you wilson, even though you sounded like a rabid dog when you disrespectfully spoke out on Wednesday. Your lack of respect towards the POTUS is indicative of what your Party is willing to stoop to, and foster. There is a growing "eye-opening" movement in this country vis-a-vis how the populace views Republicans. Your Party is fast losing the respect of the public at large. It is an embarrassment for many to be labeled as Republicans. Your behaviour the other evening is adding momentum to this movement, and for that I would lile to thank you. Bark on!

Maybe his intrusion was abrupt. But it was true. And, in fact, Obama and his administration has been everything but truthful and "transparent." This, on it's face, should outrage even the most devout supports. Obama is not delivering what he promised; and thankfully so.

Therefore, this is resulting in the vast mistrust and uprising by the American people; they only want the a president they can trust. Where the healthbill doesn't blatantly state it won't cover illegals, it also leaves vast loopholes to do so; and in addition to that, leaves loopholes for deep government intrusion and control into private citizen's lives. While we need reform, or enhancement, we desperately need governmental reform, starting with ousting more of this current administration.

Joe Wilson can come represent any district of our New Mexico anytime ! We'd love to get rid of the flipped-out Democrat bozos we have now – all but one were new in 2008, and all are totally flipped-out Obamanoids. BIG mistakes were made here in New Mexico, and elsewhere, in 2008.
