Defiant Wilson raises more than $200,000 after outburst

Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.

(CNN) - Less than a day after Rep. Joe Wilson formally apologized to President Obama over his "you lie" outburst, a campaign aide confirms to CNN the South Carolina Republican has raised "more than $200,000" in the wake of the now-infamous moment.

News of that cash haul comes after Wilson directly asked in a Web video for campaign cash to fend off attacks from political opponents and said he's standing by his opposition to Democratic efforts at health care reform.

"On these issues, I will not be muzzled, I will speak up and speak loudly against this risky plan," Wilson said in a YouTube video released Thursday evening. "The supporters of the government takeover of health care and the liberals who want to give health care to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan."

The congressman disbursed the video via Twitter and asked his followers to "please watch and pass on."

"[Democrats] want to silence anyone who speaks out against it," Wilson also says in the video. "They made it clear they want to defeat me and pass the plan. I need your help now... contribute to my effort to defeat the proponents of government-run health care."

Wilson also sent a fundraising appeal via e-mail, saying he is confident "my voice is serving as the voice for Americans across the country who are tired of irresponsible government programs that have only worsened our situation."

The appeal for cash came as Wilson's Democratic opponent in next year's congressional race, Rob Miller, reported raking in $750,000 as a result of the outburst during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress. Miller ran against Wilson last year, losing by eight points. It was Wilson's smallest margin of victory in his five elections for Congress.

In an e-mail to supporters Thursday night, Miller said he is aiming to top over $1 million in the next 24 hours, a total that dwarfs the $67,000 he has took in during the entire first half of the year.

This is typical of the 'good ole boys' from the south. Mr. Wilson and those who support him, see themselves losing power, so they act out the only way they know how – in an infantile, stupid way and then try to make excuses as to how right they were. With people of his ilk in power, no wonder South Carolina is at the bottom of everything bad.

Is anyone surprised? He apologized and then came back the next day and said he was ordered to do so.

Fox News spent yesterday defending Wilson and basically said that Obama did lie.

Truthfully, none of the politicians in Washington have any class.

It's one big cartoon factory in Washington.

YOU LIE WILSON! Show us in the bill where illegasls get free healthcare? Please point that out. If you are on the side of the truth then you should have some FACTS to back it up. Perhaps your "Sons of the Confederacy" buddies have them hidden with Obama's real birth certificate? No wonder blacks avoid repubs like the plague.

This clown is a disgrace to not just SC, but the whole US. He is an arrogant ignorant bigot which has become typical of the Republican base. I hope all the radical right wing rednecks keep pouring money at him. We need to keep the true face of backward intolerance out in the open ~ this hill-billy can be the poster child. Natural selection works, let's hope his brand of vile perspective becomes extinct.

Yes, it appears he will not be muzzled - especially when it comes to being a new low among the members of Congress.

Even though I do not live in SC, I sent a donation to his Democratic opponent in the race...not because I really think it will make a difference, but because I do NOT want Wilson rewarded for being a new low-water mark for the GOP. If that was a spontaneous remark, I'll eat a $5 bill! Exquisite timing with the photographer who took the photo...and considering that there were approximately 534 members of Congress in that Joint session to focus on, it sure was a "lucky" break that he or she just "happened" to catch Wilson heckling the President.

The President of the United States should be respected but libs need to hold up a minute! They have trashed that very notion for the past 8 years of total disrespect given to President Bush. Now the wimpy talking heads are trying to make this a race issue.

After the way Bush, Palin and McCain were attacked by the left there is no longer room for civility and the libs who now call for it, only make themselves appear ignorant. Obama stood by and let his dogs do the attacking at least Wilson had the courage to speak out himself!

To: Joe Wilson: Why would anyone want to contribute to your effort after you have so juvenilely insulted the president of the United States on national television? You have absolutely no credibility whatsoever and you should resign your post in shame and volunteer your services to help those who are out of work or do not have any health insurance. Your outburst was a disgrace to all Americans.

If you wingnuts would watch Hannity only until he tells his first lie, you would have 55 quality minutes everyday to spend with your family.

I hope he gets voted out of office in the mid term elections next year. This guy is a disgrace in the congress, and he should be ashamed of himself. The bill clearly states that undocumented persons will not have medical services paid for. What more proof does he want? Though, for Rep Joe Wilson, being a republican and making inappropriate comments has been the norm for his Party.

No matter his feelings an outburst like that is unacceptable. Can you imagine if it were a democrat to Bush? Republicans would be demanding resignation calling Wilson an unAmerican socialist. James Carver said it best – "Republicans are just meaner than us." And it's true.

I would question the validity of these fund raising totals. The Representative's web site has been down since the evening of his idiotic outbust. How is he collecting funds? Carrier Pidgeon?

This guy is a disrespectful jerk. Hey I have a good idea! How about I disrespect the president on national television and then try and profit from it? I have no problem with people being critical of policies or plans that another official may have; however, I do think that it is in poor taste to disrespect them and then profit from it. I think anyone who actually believes that he is sorry should use their brain and realize that he is loving every minute of this attention. James Carville said it perfect last night when he stated that the republican party has turned to talk radio in pushing forth their political agenda. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear Rush and Hannity praise a guy who is saying that its alright to disrespect your president. How does the republican party expect to get anything accopmlished when they have allowed these scoundrels to be the spokesmen for their party?
