WASHINGTON (CNN) - The House of Representatives on Tuesday formally admonished Republican Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting "you lie" during President Barack Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress last week.
The House passed a resolution of disapproval on a 240-179 vote that was mostly along party lines, reflecting the Democratic majority in the chamber.
Five representatives voted "present."
According to the Office of the House Historian, it was the first time in its 220-year history that the House has disciplined a member for speaking out during a presidential speech in the chamber to a joint session of Congress.
During debate on the resolution, Wilson called the measure a waste of time and failed to offer an apology to the chamber as demanded by House Democrats.

The problem I have with this is I know it was racially motivated. I live int the South. trust me nothing has change. The President, as usual, was a class act in accepting this loud mouth's apology. But, as it was clear by Wilson's comments the next day that his apology was not sincere, and as he embarrassed himself and the Congress by being such a disrespectful boor, this was appropriate. What was inappropriate was the Republicans accepting such behavior.
Good, now strip hiim of any authority. We are Americans and our Congress deserves to be respected. Hecklers do not have a place in it. People should never be allowed to act that way. This is not just about insulting the President of the United States. This is about conduct in the workplace, in Congress, and in the eyes of the world. People like Joe Wilson make our judiciary system seem like a joke when they act like this. Shame on you Joe Wilson, you deserve to be punished for this selfish act. Why are you even still in office.

I'm glad they did this. Not a political "stunt," but an official slap on the wrist for very bad behavior. Why have rules if there's no repercussions? I saw Boehner railing about how nice Wilson is, how he has 4 military sons. So what? What kind of example does he set for them? A bad one. It's a small gesture toward restoring a tiny bit of civility to a country where some have gone stark raving mad.

Their is such a thing as protocol that each and every Senator and House of Representative MUST comply with. Failure to comply allows their peers to admonish them. Many Dem and Repub have had to stand before their peers and apology for his or her action. Senator Veeter , Senator Ensige(sp) and the fine Excongressman T. Delay stood up an apology for their sin. Why do some of you feel that Wilson is above complying with the policy and preocedures? He could have came out of the well and spoke with the press and said whatever, it is just that one does not (in this Country) yell out while a President is speaking.
