From

(CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who appears to rank only behind President Obama as a top target of health care reform opponents, grew visibly emotional Thursday when asked to compare the current political climate to that of years past.

"We are a free country and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill press conference as she appeared to get emotional. "I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw this myself in the late 70s in San Francisco.

"This kind of rhetoric was very frightening and it gave - it created a climate in which violence took place and so I wish that we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made, understanding the ears that it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume," she added.

The California Democrat's image was a popular one among "Tea Party" protesters on Capitol Hill last weekend, used on signs with derogatory messages like "Congress, look what happens from too much pork."

Pelosi reiterated her commitment Thursday to a public option in the House version of the health care bill, a day after Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus unveiled a compromise bill that lacks the controversial provision.

"A public option will be in the bill that passes the House of Representatives," she said.

Ah yes, the angry conservative "twinkie defense" as justification for cold-blooded murder. No doubt some angry conservative will try it again 30 years later.

All we now is a loose cannon to listen to the Beck's of the world, I don't know how this crap is going to end, but it won't be pretty, and anybody who thinks someone isn't going to get hurt is kidding themselves.. This is what this country has become, 3/4 with sense, the rest are swinging in the breeze.

Gale   September 17th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

Ms Pelosi: you don't even get it do you? People are sick and tired of a Congress where absolutely no attention is paid to the voters wishes. Congress Men and Women do exactly what they want with the only concern being is: "What's in it for me" Corruption is running wild and all Congress can do is censure Wilson? I believe the voters will vote a lot of people out of office, now that they know how filthy they are, and they just keep on making self gratification moves without any consideration for the people of America. Wake up!!

millwright   September 17th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

Has everyone forgotten the comments this congress has made about the citizens who disagree about their policy making. The speaker and this congress has CREATED the climate of violence. Comments like brown shirts, Nazi’s, unpatriotic and disagreeing racist. All I can say you made this bed so sleep in it. Maybe we as a country can drive the wicked witch of the west home.

chuck   September 17th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

The right wing tea parties and conservative talk radio have not left out the place that Pelosi represents – San Francisco. Their attacks on the citizens of San Francisco have been hard-core in many cases and the gay community has been the recipient of many of these cruel and sharp jabs. It seems to me that Pelosi would not be as offensive to some on the right if she wasn't representing a large gay population. This cruelty is a dead give-away of who these people really are. This homogeneous group has some very homophobic rhetoric for Pelosi's homosexual constituents. It certainly makes me think twice about allegations of racism coming from these camps.

Predicta   September 17th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

This means if you don't agree with my policy, don't speak out about it, just keep it to yourself. Sounds like a violation of first amendment rights to me.

Joe in CA   September 17th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

I'm a democrat but it's time for Pelosi AND Reid to go. They are dragging the party down. Let 'em keep their current elected positions, but take 'em out the Speaker of the House and Majority Leader spots. they are WAY to contorversial.

T Mckinley   September 17th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

As I observe this country becoming more and more divided along ideological lines, I am coming to the point where I am beginning to think that the best solution to this situation would be to allow Texas, Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabam, Georgia, and South Carolina to go ahead and seceed from the Union.

The conservative, far-right is going to do everything in their power to keep this country from moving ahead into the 21st century. They have proven over and over again that they cannot be reasoned with, and have absolutely no interest in compromising with anyone they disagree with on anything. Everthing has to be THEIR way.

I think it's time we at least consider giving them a country of their own.
If this has to happen, I would like to see this happen without a civil war. May God have mercy on us all.

David   September 17th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Then Nancy why don't you resign!! You call people brownshirts and nazis, its no wonder people can't stand your smug and arrogant way of trying to cram down a public option in which most americans oppose! You offer no debate and dismiss any proposals the other side may have especially when they are free market solutions! You ignore the fact that we are in serious debt and spend other peoples money to help fund your princess agenda even though it willdoom the country for decades! Its too bad there are so many loons in SF. that actually would vote for this evil, nasty woman!

Insurance company stocks are on the rise because WallStreet knows that insurance companies will make huge profits the way the healthcare bill is now being drafted. We have given up too much. Get back to public options and stop trying to make the Republicans happy. It will never happen, they cannot afford to let President Obama win.

Theresa   September 17th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

The funny thing is, she probably contributed to the type of language more than any one else. Remember her seeing people wearing swastikas and things of that nature. No one was doing those things and yet she wanted to label it as such and now she is crying about it. Whatever!

rob   September 17th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

What a disgusting display. So now protesting against the Gov't or certain Dem leaders policies leads to violence???? This is another example of the Dems trying to silence anyone who disagrees with them by vilifying them.

Ms. Pelosi, your supporters carried signs depicting Pres Bush with a gun to his head, they made films on how to assassinate him. Don't shed those crockadile tears.

The Dems are more desparate than ever, the public is watching what the are doing and they like it less and less.

Nov. 2010 can't come fast enough.

Peter Zheutlin   September 17th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Our children are listening. Maybe we should all keep that in mind as we conduct our public discourse and things would be more civil. The tone of much of the anti-Obama rhetoric is reckless and responsible Republicans ought to help tone it down.

Jack   September 17th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

So if conservative rant and rave like liberals do on Huffington Post or Move-On.org or any of the other left wing loons sights it creates a climate of violence. And obviously as an "elite intellectual progressive" she knows that the American public is made up of "ears...are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume,"... So the American public is "out of balance". This is exactly what Pelosi and her fellow progressives believe. They are the only ones capable of ruling America because they are the only ones educated and experienced enough. This is exactly why they are convinced that socialism will work if they are in charge even though hundreds of years of history have proven that wrong. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Duenas   September 17th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Two words for Pelosi: Pathetic / Instigator
I strongly believe that Pelosi is one of the main reasons as to why so many Americans oppose President Obama's healthcare reform.

Nothing 'Stand Up' about Sen John Ensign (R-NV)   September 17th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Speaker Pelosi isn't the only person who is upset about the hate now rampant in our political discourse.

David McKalip, the doctor who was responsible for the posters of President Obama depicting him as an African witch doctor with a loincloth and wearing bones in his nose, resigned his position with the Pinellas County Medical Association and gave up his seat as a delegate at the American Medical Association.

"The Pinellas County Medical Association joins with the Florida Medical Association in denouncing and condemning Dr. McKalip's act and his offensive ‘Obama Care’ statements. Dr. McKalip's act in no way reflects the opinions of the Pinellas County Medical Association or its Board of Governors. Dr. McKalip has submitted his resignation as President-Elect and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Pinellas County Medical Association, and his resignation has been accepted."

Those who are stoking the flames of this hate should be held responsible for the violence that will surely follow if it is not stopped.

Bridgette   September 17th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

I think what the Republicans have done with this debate has opened a door that not even they are ready for. This is going to back fire on them and that is why they themselves are even moving away from it.

Perecorp   September 17th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Don't worry Nancy, if the GOP and their racists supporters want violence and fighting we will take it to them. Rest assured the next GOP will get exactly what they're giving Obama!

HYPOCRITES

Not as balanced, not as stable, but often armed. So yes, we are afraid! The right and left need to reign in their lunatic fringe so we can have a serious and honest debate about how to best serve the people (all the people) of this great country! God Bless America!

David from WI   September 17th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Good thing for her then the right are the ones DEFENDING the police and CIA and DO believe in law and order.

How many arrests were there at the Tea Party DC demonstrations.

ZERO that's how many.

Of course she did mention San Fransisco and that is such a bastion of right wing conservatism so I would assume she is talking toward the left side of the isle.

There are cooks in any crowd I do agree but she might want to be a little careful she might make matters worse.

Tunde Akins   September 17th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

I'm black and I was excited about Obama becoming president simply because he's black (not racist, but its something I've always thought wont happen in my lifetime), but when I realized what was about to happen when a defeated George (i mean John) McCain... I started to just hope he can get through the 1st term w/o being shot/killed. Hopefully, he'll fix the nation with his one term and resign and let another truthful soul lead the nation.

I dont want him to have a 2nd term, I would rather him be alive than a dead 2nd term president.

TCM   September 17th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Joshua College Station Texas   September 17th, 2009 2:25 pm ET

I like Nancy Pelosi. I think she is careful and exercises good judgment. The folks I hear put her down all the time scare me. They seem angry, unbalanced, idealistic, and out-of-touch with the realities of governing in this volatile climate. I sympathize with her concerns regarding our collective safety. We should all take a breather and calm down a bit, about everything.

Interesting. I'm thinking in late 70's San Francisco it would have been liberal Dems using "the language that is being used" today. And now she's afraid of it? Considering what her hubby does and how both he and she have profited greatly off the Iraq War while she spouts off against it, this kind of hypocrisy is not all that surprising, though. This is the best the Dems in the House could do for a leader, huh? Sad.

she's right and so is jimmy carter. no one can convince me otherwise. I saw and heard it in the past and it has risen up again louder and just as dangerous as before. these people may not be the majority but it only takes one or two raving maniacs to cause a calamity

MY OPINION   September 17th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

More leaders in DC need to speak up. I have seen, heard, and read most of the GOP like the hate, fear, and division that is going on in this country, in fact they PAY big money to the organizations that encourage the less educated, ignorant, people with NO breeding and class to behave this way.

It is ok to disagree, to critique BUT PLEASE HAVE SOME THING BETTER OR JUST SOMETHING TO OFFER. OH , and please stop stop attacking the man and the man's character when you do not agrees with what he says. Example, comments about Jimmy Carter, this man has lived in the SOUTH all his life, has traveled the world, has been in settings where as a white man has heard comments form other white people. THIS MAN IS NOT LYING, HE IS TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS COUNTRY AND MANY OF YOU IN AMERICA ARE IN DENIAL.

Ben in Texas   September 17th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Pelosi is disliked on both sides. The righties seem to think she is ultra-liberal, which is demonstrably untrue. Many on the right don't like her because of her gender/party combination, irrespective of her policies and actions.

From the other side, progressives understand that she had the opportunity and obligation to impeach Bush and Cheney, and she abrogated her responsibility. That failure will not be forgiven, and its consequences will come back to haunt America.

The Voice   September 17th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

The 9-12 March on Washington:

Not one speck of violence, and all trash was disposed of properly. After Obama's inauguration, there were literally mountains of trash left behind.

Between Americans being called racists and terrorists, and now Pelosi's reference to violence, it's a wonder that people aren't storming the steps of Congress with pitchforks in hand.

Nancy, this will not be a problem after 2010 when Americans vote all you scumbags out (both dems and repubs). We're sick of you and sick of our representatives thinking the taxpayers are their personal bank accounts.

Jeff   September 17th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

I guess it wasn't a problem for Pelosi and Co. to denounce Bush and his supporters. Repubs are fair game, but the delicate little Democrats are scared to be criticized. If people continue to vote fools like her into office, they get what they deserve.

JST   September 17th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Gee Nancy, Maybe you should ratchet down the partisan attacks you like to lob. Maybe you should ask yourself if you're contributing to the noise as much as anyone? Where's the leadership as the House Leader? The Congress belongs to all of us and you're at the top. How 'bout acting professional for a change.

Couldn't have been said any better.

The violent atmosphere that is being manifested in recent weeks, shows that we must have a change of consciousness. Those who spew hate and bias have a real reason for it.

Their WORLD AS THEY KNOW IT is coming to an end.
We WILL END the wars.
We WILL END racism
We WILL END poverty
We WILL END the hate!

The era of Hate and Anger are OVER!

There are ENOUGH OPEN MINDS in this world that WE CAN MAKE THE CHANGE IN COUNSCIOUSNESS.

We MUST put and end to rhetoric spoken by the Glenn Becks of the world.

Cando   September 17th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Nancy there is nothing you can say or do to stop this hateful speech, I just pray that nothing bad happens to our leaders because of this hatefullness that's going on. Half of these people don't even know what they are protesting. (see the u-tube video where the reporter is asking the questions about why they are there). It just shows that they will believe anything that the likes of Glen Beck and gang will spew. They really don't care about this country, the more divided the better they like it. I find things very sad for this country.

Phat Elvis   September 17th, 2009 2:06 pm ET

I think this has been on alot of peoples' minds and i am glad Speaker Pelosi is raising the issue. things have gotten way out of hand. one man lost a part of his finger not too long ago because of sharpened rhetoric. we need to get back to debating issues without fueling hate or demonizing opposing views.

N   September 17th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

People fight their whole lives, fighting for equality. But then they see an opening for a chance to shift the laws in their favor, and they jump on it. Hate crimes in this country need to be determined equally. Or we should rethink who we call our heroes of the civil rights movement, and see that equality was not the agenda all along, the fight was for equality, until equality can be turned around against the oppressors. So what does our future hold, yet another battle for equal rights? Just a new generation and a new group fighting for equal rights under the new laws. It is said history will repeat its self; it’s just how it will look in the sequel. Human nature will never be satisfied with equality, it’s not in the capabilities of mankind. There will always have to be the so called “ Alpha Male” Affect.

The looks on VP Biden and Rep. Pelosi faces from the remarks of Joe Wilson told all- amazement and disbelief. However, when we see the group seated around Wilson there weren't any facial expressions at all. Why? could it be that this was a setup by the Republicans to take the edge off of the President's speech. Let us face it, they came with their paperwork and signs and that tells me they knew exactly what they were doing.

Let us give Public Option a new name PUBLIC CHOICE.

Andrew Steiner   September 17th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

She is absolutely correct on this point. A handful of high-profile, highly paid, self-proclaimed conservatives are inciting some of the more frightened, uneducated, and bigoted masses, whipping them up into a frenzy, laying the groundwork for someone to do some irrevocable harm. Frankly, I don't think people like Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh believe half of what they say... but they know that they get paid millions to preach to their loyal choirs. I pray for the return of truth and civility. Until then, the pop-cultural icons will have their "15 minutes" of fame, and seem blissfully ignorant to the long term damage they leave in their wake.

Steve, Columbia SC   September 17th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

"this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance"..............? Sounds like Mrs Speaker has ideas of moving away from freedom to government controlled safety, or health care, or gun control, or weath redistribution..............you're not listening to the majority of American Mrs Pelosi. We don't want your government option, we don't' want your gun control, your big government, your trough mentality.

The current climate is something you haven't seen before, because the nation is pretty fed up with the arroganance of government, the intrusive attitude of government, and the total disregard for fiscal responsibility. This climate is not extreme, radical, terroristic, racist, it is the climate of a successful, free democracy.

Bill in Illinois   September 17th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

I almost never agree with Nancy but this time she is right on with her concerns. Many of these folks mothers must be spinning in their graves. I would bet any amount of money that they were not brought up like this.

Civility, decency and moral values seem to have become values of the past, being replaced with an "it's all about me and to hell with you" attitude. It seems to me that this switch in our value system is directly related to the inability of the "party of no" to actually try and listen to anyone but by their need to act like a bunch of spoiled two year olds and play partisian politics.

That's because the republicans aren't listening to their own hearts anymore, they are listening to a bunch of fools who are all fighting for the limelight and will say or do anything to cause discourse and anarchy. They are called home grown terrorists. And let's just say that president Obama denounced what Jimmy Carter said, but if you look at the hate and outright maliciousness, Carter wasn't very far off the mark, and everyone knows it.

The REPUBLI-CAN'Ts has a tendency to ALLOW the media to display all of the negative without EVER once correcting it. Just like they FORCED Wilson to apologize then turn around and used it as trying to build their BASE and raise money. They don't realize that they're building up VIOLENCE more than a BASE – while their REAL BASE dwindles away!!!

Dave   September 17th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

If anything ever happens to Obama, I'd hate to be Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or any of the other irresponsible pundits who are stirring up the crazies and making them think violent revolt against their own nation is "patriotic." It's easy to see what they're trying to inspire people to do, and if anyone does it, there's likely to be retaliation. As much as people loathed Bush, nobody was making these kind of stupid threats, bringing guns to town hall meetings, threatening secession, etc. And protests against Bush were about things he'd actually DONE; most of the Obama protestors are upset about fantasies of thing they think he MIGHT do.

It's all ridiculous now, but if it results in tragedy, it's not going to fare well for those who caused it.

Paul from Phoenix   September 17th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

What a load of crap. She wasn't so concerned when she was throwing that rhetoric at Bush and the GOP. Total hypocrite, trying to take a page from the Hillary playbook.

alitro   September 17th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

I can understand why Nancy Pelosi is emotional about the situation. I myself is sad that in this day and age with so many different people from different backgrounds, we are still having so much hatred and dissent from a certain group of 'white' and to a certain point racist people. This is only going to breathe violence, because I know for a fact that blacks can re-act just as much as these racist white folks, and then the whole country will be in a mess. Wake up Obama haters, you are only going to cause riots, killings and unrest if you continute on the path you are travelling. If you are against his politics, say so, but to inject racist signs and rethoric into the conversation is only going to cause problems.

Jenn, Philadelphia   September 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

I think saying things like "we won, we wrote the bill" instead of working to gether adds to that climate. I think they must have no mirros in Congress, the way they all point fingers at the other without looking at what they're doing.

TangledThorns   September 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Crocodile tears. Pelosi is the worse politician ever.

victim of republican greed   September 17th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Where is the right wingnut outrage that Joe 'the liar' Wilson was never an immigration attorney, like he said he was. This selective hate for people that are not a member of the 'sons of the confederacy' needs to stop.

Roy   September 17th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

What??????Give me a huge break, people hate Obamas and Pelosi's
policies, and that scares her? Where the heck was she the last eight years when unbelieveble hatred was thrown at Bush? Why was she not alarmed then? That hatred was personal. Now that the shoe is on the other foot she's suprised???? This lady is either blind or just a plain idiot. I think the later.

Nea   September 17th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Yes people have a right to freedom of speech but what i dont like is when people use racist tones and the top dogs act like its ok. When i see the Republicans agree with tones like lets bury obamacare with kennedy and then they acts like its ok, to me thats down right disrespectful towards the Kennedy family. And also a lot of whats coming from these tea party rallies are plain hatred a good portion of it i dont believe that all those people mean to be hateful towards anyone they just want their voices to be heard because they disagree with the Presidents views.

williefloyd   September 17th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

I'm not a fan of Ms. Pelosi, but she is right on here.

Fair is Fair   September 17th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

How can someone who has no emotions become emotional?

No tears from Pelosi... first of all, her face has been pulled tighter than a bongo drum and there's no way they could escape tear ducts. But if they did... they'd bead up on her tutle wax face.

Scott, Tucson   September 17th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

First Nancy Pelosi can listen to the American People! Not the ACORN crowd.

As for the 70's, she forgotten that lot of the violent protesting particularly in the San Francisco area were from the pro-Hanoi, anti-America, Jane Fonda, Berkly left. Guess she's trying to rewrite history too.

Burns NH   September 17th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

Violence? ?? words do not fit that comment. Now when you demand
that your members vote a certain way and if they don"t you will see
that they will be punished may fall into that category. you really need to find some other type of employment, maybe with "Acorn". You might
ponder that and exit our good congress for all of our sakes.

cj   September 17th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

So what your saying Nancy is that most who don't agree with your view are "unbalanced"? Interesting. How about we quit the smoke and mirror technique of the Bush administration and stop trying to make this look like a race thing. Where is the transparency? Where are my civil rights that were suppose to be restored? Where is government responsibility? All things promised in the election season and forgotten on Jan 21, 2009.
PS What about bringing the troops home? In the words of Joe Wilson "YOU LIE".

awaitingliberalizationbyCNN   September 17th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Only in the 70's she was one of the protesters and they were for her favorite left wing causes. Now it's different and frightening? What a hypocritical fraud.

Peggy - TX   September 17th, 2009 1:42 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi is a good person, but too weak for her critically important role, which is why she is such an easy target by the GOP. It would be a good thing is she stepped down and let a stronger player have the leadership role.

DAVE   September 17th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

if her party would stop calling real americans who voice there opinion against her precious colleagues- RACIST, ASTRO TURF, NAZI'S, MOBS, UN-AMERICAN. then her little feelings would not be so hurt when these above mentioned rally against the "BIG GOVERNMENT" thinkers like herself and many other democrats..... Keep your name calling to yourself and stop belittling Americans who happen to disagree, which my recolection is within there right protected by the FIRST AMMENDMENT

Tim   September 17th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

So what is she saying? That she's sorry for all of the things she said about Bush?

She's an idiot. Don't stop the legitimate critcism.

annie s   September 17th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

The politics of hate that has been launched by conservatives has become so overwrought that I feel incredible fear for our President and those elected officials who are trying to bring desperately needed change to this country. Hearing a so-called pastor pray for Obama's death, seeing people show up at town hall meetings sporting AK-47s, and the vicious – and yes, racist – anger of some of the Tea Party protesters is more than worrisome. It only takes one fanatic – fueled by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin and echoed by self serving Republican politicians – for a disaster to take place. Please America – let's bring sanity back!

Pelosi IS the Best we have!!!   September 17th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

I agree wholeheartedly with Nancy!!! We need to shut down this dialouge because it is harmful for the direction that Nancy is trying lead us. Let's get behind Nancy, and shut down uncivil expressions of discontent. If we only outlawed free expression and made it criminal to oppose Nancy, her programs would get passed so much more easily. Then we would not have to suffer through this vetting process as the uneducated express their fears and display for all their selfish interest. Who cares if we have to pay more for less healthcare? Where is the sacrifice in the name of Reform. Doesn't anyone like C-H-A-N-G-E?

Chuck in California   September 17th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

It appears that many feel that they must emulate the "In Your Face" style of certain commentators to the point of going to the extreme. Maybe it is because many feel they are becoming dienfranchised from the social – political environment and have lost their voice or are simply afraid. I listened to a so-called "debate" on health care last night which resolved nothing and accomplished nothing because of the shouting and apparent lack of substantiated data. Come on people, we can't continue in this manner lest we lose all respect for the rights and beliefs of each other. Speaker Pelosi is right!

Truth-Bomb Thrower   September 17th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Pelosi is emotional about losing her speakership and maybe her house seat in the upcoming election. Her power is ALL she cares about.......like all democrats.

A Democrat of 51 years who has finally got smart to their follishness.   September 17th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Shes only emotional because she knows shes in her last hurray. Come 2010 there will be another Speaker of the House. A REAL ONE.

floridian   September 17th, 2009 1:38 pm ET

Here she goes again, disdaining many Americans by suggesting they are "imbalanced". Perhaps she needs to view videos of her own comments/remarks with respect to President Bush, Republicans, CIA agents, and the American public, as starters. A second thought, reference what happens to words falling on ears - apparently she cannot hear too well as the majority of Americans do not want a public option and she will continue to push for one in the House bill. Why does she continue to ignore whom she works for - the American people?

Reggie   September 17th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

She's such a disaster. Only the people in her liberal California district would reelect her. A shame that such a small group of people can play such a large role in our politcal future. Hopefully, they wise up and vote her out!

James   September 17th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Nancy is making a very good point here, and probably the best I've seen in this political climate. She is undoubtedly referring to the time when San Francisco's Mayor George Moscone and gay-rights activist Harvey Milk were assasinated. It was a terrible, horrible time and she is right to warn against violent rhetoric.

A Democrat of 51 years who has finally got smart to their follishness.   September 17th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Thes two people are most two do-nothings this world has ever produced. If Obama is going to be the first President black president he better do something quick or he definitely will be the last.

OldUncleTom   September 17th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

I would hope that the Tea Party Patriots, with their artificial manhood strapped to their hip, would consider that the promotion of violence does not serve any American cause.

Audrey in VA   September 17th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

Pelosi is the one using hate-filled rhetoric. She has bogusly characterized Obama's opponents as racists and nazis. Give me a break, lady!

Nagudcm Sugna   September 17th, 2009 1:34 pm ET

She is a part of the way things used to be done and not part of how it needs to be done. She may be sad as she is realizing that her party is changing right out from under her.

Right Leaning Independent   September 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Pelosi just does not get that the majority of Americans are opposed to the Public Option yet she is determined to ram it through. And she wonders why people hate her???

Dave   September 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Then change YOUR language Speaker Pelosi. When it was President Bush, YOU were leading the charge with the same hateful and dangerous language and demonstrations against his Administration.

Now that Dem's have the presidency, it's "no more with questioning the political motives of the Administration or Congress" and if you do question then you're an angry mob. You can't have it both ways and for the record this type of language is BAD for our country.

Obama worst president EVER   September 17th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

I'm going to throw up. Boo-hoo Nancy. You started it.

Right Leaning Independent   September 17th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Pelosi's rhetoric is frightening to most Americans! Her far left agenda is scary to conservatives and moderates!! It is a shame she was not concerned about the rhetoric that was spewed against Bush! Civility disappeared with the Bush smear campaign led by the far left. Now the far right gives it back and she is scared. I think we need to eliminate the far left and far right in order to regain sanity in the US!

katiec   September 17th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

I have never seen our country as it is today. I have never witnessed politicians stoop to the level they have. Never has there been so many lies, distortions, fear mongering and lack of regard of our elected for what is best for us and our country.
And it is so discouraging that people have let theirselves be so blindly led by big business,. How can they not realize they are being manipulated by greed and power?
How can anyone believe we do not need health care reform. The status quo is completely unacceptable. We can no longer allow big business, lobbyists, special interests and those who support them to continue to run, control our country and make crucial decisions on our behalf. We cannot accept politicians who put campaign funding, personal gains and interests over the welfare of the American people.
Wake up people. Stop the hate and start realizing what our country needs.

GI Joe   September 17th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

rmh   September 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Is the same Pelosi who said CIA lied during briefings?
Same Pelosi who called TeaParty people Astroturfers and angry mobs......?
The same Pelosi who has slammed the door in the face of Republican negotiators when she pushed Stimulus, TARP, Budget, Cap&Trade.....?
She's worried about the political climate.
Come one Nancy this is what you created....

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   September 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Well here is a rare moment, I agree with Rep. Pelosi, the mood does seem too over the top. We are frighten and untrusting of our government, but as a pacifist we must not allow this to escalate into violence in the streets of America.
Have faith America as we always have had before in times of crisis, we will find the right path in time.

tisgoogle   September 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Neutralizer   September 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

She's emotional due to the fact she's worried next year she might not be Speaker of the House; that's what it boils down to. Next year, the American people will clean up CULTURE OF CORRUPTION done with IMPUNITY by Democraps. We're taking our country back, you've abused trust and confidence of the American people – we've had it!

What? You mean like Barak's left-wing terrorist buddy Ayers and others in the Weather Underground Nancy?

Is Pelosi the Best we can Do?   September 17th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

Is Nancy Pelosi advocating a curtailment of free speech in order to strike the appropriat balance for safety? Has she been consulting with Dick Cheney, or is she just making her rules as she goes along, with the first order of business being to protect her power rather than to adhere to any set of values or principles???

mike   September 17th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

Poor Nancy. You have called American citizens as liars, Nazis, astroturf, punks, losers, bums, idiots, pathetic and cheats. I have know respect for you and your stupid statements, and I could care less about your concerns.

Henry Miller, Libertarian, Cary, North Carolina   September 17th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

If Nancy Pelosi would quit trying to steal everyone's money in taxes, ruin their kids' financial futures with insane levels of debt, and quit trying to tell people they're too stupid to manage their own health care arrangements, maybe people would stop saying unpleasant things about her.

This health care thing has transcended mere political philosophy–a lot of people see Pelosi and the far Left as a very real, very personal, threat to their lifestyles. Of course they're going to react strongly and very negatively.

senior canadian   September 17th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

As a Canadian I am also very angry at your Republican extremists who
critizise our Canadain Health Plan.
Yesterday our Canadian Senator was facing on CNN American Senator(Republican)
Senator from Wayoming (Sen. Burrasso) arrogantly lies about Canadian Health Insurance. In Canada. We are proud of our Health Insurance where EVERY Canadian has been covered.
Also our political representatives have the same health coverage not as American Senators and Congressman who got the BEST Health
coverage of course paid by American taxpayers.Just wonder how some people have no shame to spread LIES in front of millions watching.Canada did not Bancrot because every Canadian has Health Insurance, as this is basic human right of all of us.

jaye   September 17th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Pelosi is correct.
This hate filled political climate being generated by the republican party is disgusting...and their 24 hours mouthpiece fox news is the biggest instigaor of all (IMO).
And CNN is helping fan the flames of hate when they let their talking heads spew the hate and lies on their shows with no proof of what they say.
The media is destroying our country, and all the hate being spread on news channels will lead to a bad end.

sharon   September 17th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Speaker Pelosi is correct in what she has said.
Those that incisite violence will have to take responsibility for their

Are "they" prepared to do so?

yuri   September 17th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Freedom feeds fillip and flames of frenzy in a few freak cases, but if it reaches a more feverish frequency, somebody ought to remind those folks to tone down their rhetorical crescendo to a decrescendo level.

Much to the chagrin of a lot of sane people, these advices fall in deaf ears or flatout fail to be fulfilled. That's when the counter measure creates a conundrum of confrontation between the two congreagations and culminates in a chaotic collision.

Charles   September 17th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

A call from Nancy Pelosi for moderation and civility? Has she ever listened to herself? She has been one of the most vocal, bitter, and divisive political hacks ever to camp out in Washington.

Phil   September 17th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

She is part of the reason for the political climate to be as hot as it is right now. I think the people will get rid of a lot of the career politicians like her when their next re-election bids come up.

Bob in Pa   September 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

Balanced?! Freedom and Safety ? What is she talking about ?
We can all see where this type of talk from a government leads ... the fairness doctorine, martial law, curfews, political prisioners. All for our own safety of course.

If you don't like it when free people express discontent with poor leadership and bad government decisions you need to step down lady !

AXH   September 17th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

Give me a break Nancy!

Why can you be the only one to call the American public names?

Get out of the Senate, we don't want you there!
Stop spending our money and shoving your liberal agenda down our throats!

Steve (the real one)   September 17th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

You want to see Pelosi get emotional? Have the feds shut the water off to her vineyards, like they did to the hundreds of farmers in Central Cali all because of a little fish!! That placed the farmers and their families out of business and into bread lines. Folks, these are the people that allow us to bring food to our tables! This is going to catch up with us very soon by way of higher prices and a greater reliance on produce from other countries!

Pee Wee   September 17th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

Well, maybe if she didn't call people exercising their First Amendment rights Nazis and angry violent mobs, the tenor would change.

mjm   September 17th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

"understanding the ears that it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume," she added."

Come on, Pelosi. Nobody thinks your balance. If you were, you would listen to the people in the town halls instead of calling them nazis. The public option is a deal breaker.

Write a better bill.

By the way, Nazi's were socialists, not capitalists.

Four and The Door   September 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

What Speaker Pelosi is hearing is just passionate disagreement with this unprecedented attack on the US Treasury from the current administration and congress. Americans know that Public Option Health Care is just another huge, expensive mistake that doesn't make financial sense at all.

It's frustrating to see these trillions of taxpayer dollars being thrown at every problem without regard for how it will be paid for. Nobody in Washington is being responsible now except the Bluedog Democrats and the Republicans. It's very straightforward what this is all about.

Ken   September 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

If I had an approval rating of 12% among 370 million people I would probably get emotional too! If she puts the public option in the House bill it will be the nail in the coffin on health care reform. Thanks Pelosi for not listening to anything americans have been saying, you by yourself have killed reform.

Matt   September 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

For Pelosi any opposition to what she thinks is rascist and violent. I don't think there is a more closed off and isolated person in government than her. She is so far out of touch with normal average America its not funny its sad.

Jason   September 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Poor baby . . . maybe she needs to step down if the job is too much for her or maybe she should think of others for once and not her own political agenda.

People dont like her for a reason and its her own fault!

Ren from Baltimore   September 17th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

When "tea party" folks have signs saying "next time I'll bring my gun," "we want our country back," and "bury obamacare with kennedy," we know we slipped into some other kind of cultural warfare.

I see and hear it in the suburbs northof Baltimore; the klan and confederate flag are by no means hidden from view, as they proudlyl set up at public meetings, cookouts, and county fairs.

Leadership has to speak up, at least among their own constituents: McCain, Dole, McConnell, Cantor, Pawlenty, Alexander, Romney....this is not a religious matter, not a freedom of speech matter, and certainly not a health care reform matter.

To not distance yourselves from the talk of secession, civil war, fascism and racial war is to be anti-America.

minnie   September 17th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Very wise words Madam Speaker. There are a lot of angry, mentally unbalanced people out there – not a good combination. I think too many have taken our freedom of speech right to a frightening and insane level – it's really out of control. At what point does freedom of speech become slander?

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   September 17th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

Trouble

wait a minute   September 17th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Speaker Pelosi just made some very intelligent statements on her vision for health care reform and her advice for her fellow politicians to take responsibility. This has proved her fit for a great leader.

GOP wants to keep workers employed in insurance-medical industries, while DNC wants to give everyone access to health care.

We have to ask ourselves. Are insurance-related jobs the best we can give to our people? How many more insurance jobs can we afford to offer? How do they help our economy? How many insurance workers are proud of what they do? I feel sorry for those insurance gatekeepers. I am sure they don't feel so good about their jobs and themselves.

vic nashville , Tn   September 17th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin , Tim Pawlenty , Bobby Jindal Etc are missing

I didn’t see any leadership from them when some people calling Obama names

They may run for 2012 then show the leadership first

Richie   September 17th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

This all started with the verbally abusive outbursts at Palin/McCain rallies that the candidates did not object to. Civility is absent. I think it is fear on the part of old white people of having an African American president. @Ed Rollins - I'm NOT saying there is not legitimate political disagreement with the President. I am saying that the vehement violent tone is due to white peoples' fear.

smokey   September 17th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

You Go Nancy ! and we the American People are behind you and Pres Obama 100%...And you are right, the climate has gotten very heated, but my hope is that once Health Reform is passed, people can once again come together like they did when Pres Obama accepted the office...I think the saying " we should all get along " is very appropriate here..But I understand the fight for affordable healthcare is still in progress, and we must not any issue derail or distract this important issue at this critical time....KEEP THE FAITH !!!!

JDL   September 17th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

Irony? Glass houses? The pot and the kettle? To a large extent, Nancy Pelosi is herself a source of much defamatory and incendiary speech against any and all whom she, in her wisdom and arrogance, has determined to be villains. I hope she will heed her own advice.

Tony   September 17th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Since its Nancy herself who actually began all the name calling with the Nazi's and astroturf name calling, you sow what you reap. With approval ratings in the 30s, she is probably crying about not being a better representative of the people or a better human being.

Laura in KS   September 17th, 2009 1:08 pm ET

I'm not the biggest fan of Ms. Pelosi, but I have to agree with her on this one. The level of public outrage and hatred against the Democratic leadership for no definitive reason (the govt has so far done NOTHING to actually take away anyone's freedoms) is astonishing, and frankly, terrifying. Conservatives are always saying how "afraid" they are for this country, and I agree–I'm afraid some wacko who thinks Pres. Obama isn't a citizen and who wants to turn America into a Socialist state and take our children away and turn them into a Nazi army while taking away our guns and free speech and destroying profit and capitalism and blah blah blah is going to take violent action against our legitimate, ELECTED leadership.

alpha_nu_916   September 17th, 2009 1:07 pm ET

the tea baggers are an interesting group. dollars to doughnuts many do not have an education beyond high school & it is apparent that almost all (if not all) are caucasian and over forty years of age.
i'll make an assumption that all are racist; i mean, call a spade a spade. i think it is fair given that they think all liberals are socialist.

KMAN   September 17th, 2009 1:06 pm ET

Sorry Nancy, you can't reason with or touch the hearts of the hate-filled GOP with a human emotion other that hate ... just look @ the insanity displayed through their voices and signs @ their "Tea Bagger" shout fests ... they're simply ignorant ranting fools! You know, the ones that refer to themselves as "real" Americans and Christians!

tom   September 17th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

This is real scary. " We are a free country and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance," What does she mean by that? Sounds like something that came out of Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia. Does she mean freedom is endangering safety? Please Ms. Speaker, clarify yourself, and understand one thing, we have a freedom of speech guaranteed in the US Constitution and there aren't enough police, or military personell in this Country to take it away from us. So if you want to make yourself feel safer, carry a gun.

Mississippi Miss   September 17th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

It is truly regretable that Nancy Pelosi sincerely and justifably believes that she is a target of some people who are among the citizens who are protesting the Obama Administration and agenda.

She has nothing to fear, but fear itself, which is a bad way to have to live your life, especially when you are in the public spotlight.

The saddest thing of all, is that Nancy Pelosi just doesn't get it.
She would have made a great kindergarten teacher, but as a leader of a party that is evolving into a threat to America's freedom, she should at least keep her mind open to the possibilities of the patriotic outcry.

U.S. Common Sense   September 17th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

This is politics, and both the Democrats and Republicans are guilty of the tone in Washington and across the country. For 8 years they hounded the Bush Administration, with people burning the American flag and effigies of Bush. If she can't handle 8 months of protests in their direction, then she should step down and let someone else take up the banner of being Speaker. Seriously, how did she ever get the position to begin with?

Nancy Pelosi, you are still bad for this country. Do us all a favor. RESIGN!

Kevin in Ohio   September 17th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

Awww...she wants us to play nice. After she called us Nazis. This woman is dangerous. Obama and Biden are both perfectly safe as long as this woman is third in line to the Presidency.

RNC = DNC = politics as usual   September 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Another DNC veiled fear message. Even though TeaBaggers have protested peacefully and shouting at the president is not violent, we are still asked to be afraid.

Fear is a GREAT way to control people. Imaginary fear is just as good.

Criticism is NOT racism. Racism is racism.

Thank you Nancy. Your plea that the hateful rhetoric be scaled back is a sensible one based on the ears upon which such rhetoric seems to be taking root. The politcal atmosphere is very charged, not just with the usual bickering and dissenting, but with an underlying sense of pervasive evil. There are nuts out there looking for an opening, a word, a silent concensus, from those that they look up to in government to take to the streets or, worse, to commit harm to another individual(s). Please, take heed, none of this should be taken lightly.

It is scary that she is a big part of the problem and doesn't seem to know. People on the far fringes of both parties are destroying the country.

Lynda/Minnesota   September 17th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Haven't yet heard which half of our president is the racist: his white half or his black half.

No doubt you republicans will eventually decide which half it is . . .

Shawn - GA   September 17th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Where was all this worry when people were hanging dolls of Bush? When people made him into a Hitler on signs?

It is wrong no matter what side you are on, people deserve better, I am just curious why no one seemed to care when it was not Obama??

Like or dislike anyone you want to, but let us please stop all the hate!
