Gov. Rick Perry is currently battling Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for the GOP nomination.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry was originally included on 2012 Presidential Straw Poll ballot at this weekend's Values Voter Summit in Washington, but his staff requested that his name be removed.

A spokesman for Perry's re-election campaign told CNN that the request was made because the two-term governor is not thinking about running for President, but is instead "focused on running for governor." Perry is currently battling Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for the GOP nomination.

The governor, however, is still attending the conference and is slated to speak on Saturday.

The potential Republican candidates on the straw poll ballot are: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Four of the Republicans on the ballot will actually attend the event.Pence, Huckabee and Pawlenty will address the conference on Friday morning, while Romney will deliver remarks on Saturday.

Isn't this the clown that wants Texas to secede from the U.S.? What's he waiting for?

debbie   September 18th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Be very afraid of this man. He's not right.

Zion   September 18th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Romney can't win because his state promoted a healthcare plan similar to that of Pres. Obama's. Also, Pawlenty, what?

welches, oregon   September 18th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

This is so typical GOP – make a big fuss with nothing but lies and distortion, slander and slurs, then when push comes to shove – run the opposite direction.

KBHutchison is a lying skank. How quickly people forget – go back and read some of her writing during the campaign and how she lied over and over about Obama and Hillary.

I will NEVER trust a Republican. So glad I don't live in Texas or the south.

Rick from Murfreesboro, TN   September 18th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

He's probably waiting to run for President of Texas after he makes good on his threats and has the state secede from the Union.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

What a pathetic bumch of losers everyone of them.

M. M. Miller Said:

LBJ wasn't a Republican … get your facts straight. If he was, Brown vs Board of Education would not have been signed. FACT.

Brown vs Board of Education was not "signed." It was a case that was judged by the Supreme Court in 1954, before LBJ was a president or even a Senate majority leader.

He had nothing to do with that decision.

He did, however, unify Republicans and northern Democrats, at the request of Eisenhower, a Republican, to get civil rights legislation passed in the mid- to late 50's.

He was strongly opposed my leading Democrats of the time for his efforts in civil rights.

Seem we all need to get our facts straight.

1) I would like to see the source on that one. I somehow missed it.

2) Since when did liberals start defending the Constitution? If you're not going to use it, could we borrow it for a while?

RVGrandpa   September 18th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Mr Texas Guy,

Eight months in office and you HATE him already. which of his terrible liberal acts aggravate you most? Saving wall street, creating a program to save the auto industry, commencing the ending of the Iraq war, or what. Makes you kind of miss the good ole days of the epitome of efficiency, W, doesn't it?

Chris from NC   September 18th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Yeah right!!! They probably pulled his name out of the poll because the GOP doesn't need to have some nut on their national ticket who suggested seceding from the Union.

Republican bashing sounds like fun; always finds it on CNN ticker.

Pragmatic on the closed thread on same topic asked: "Will someone, anyone, show me the facts? I want proof of when any conservative idea, put into real use, in the current century, ever was successful!

Answer: Ronald Reagon. Even President Obama admits it.

"And I mean successful for the nation as a whole … not just successful for the rich and famous! When did a conservative policy ever do something positive for America? Put your money where your principals are and show me!"

Answer: Conservatives work hard to be successful and rich, then they share their wealth in charitable giving, volunteer in soup kitchens, provide employments, etc. Check staitistics who gave more. Liberals want to spend other people's money to help people. Famous liberal Joe Biden gave mere hundreds to charity.

There are some liberals who truly care about the poor and I admire them. I suspect others do it to get votes from the receivers of benefit.
Please study about ACORN operation. More democrats supported them. Does not matter about moral character as long as they can get us votes.

People, there are bad apples on both sides. Criticize away their deeds and policy. That's your right. Just stop the name calling, talk about issues and differences.

Generally, only kids find fun in calling names.

Jarod from San Diego   September 18th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

Its all over for the gop because their approval rating with latinos is at an all time low 14%,their rating with blacks are 3% their ratings with asians are 28%,the gop is going to be very shocked when they only win about 5 seats next year in lose 2 more seats in the senate, and if those numbers continues with minority voters in 2012 the gop is going to have to get 68% of the white vote to squeak by obama because they are getting killed with the minority vote.and the gop chances of getting 68% of the white vote is slim in none, when the right-wing realize they cant ever win again its going to be very dangerous to live in america because these right-wing haters are going to do something very bad i can just feel it,but its the gop fault for dumping their moderate views for very hard conservatives views, which turned off 95% of the minorities.

kathy5   September 18th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

I don't know what to say – 2 of these people didn't make the cut last election – 3 if you count Palin and the others are complete duds. No, strick that – make that 4, I had forgotten Newt ran a few cycles back didn't he?

The economy will be better – a healthcare reform will will get passed, unemployment numbers will go down – Obama will go unchallenged by any Democrats so looks like 2012 will bring us 4 more years of an Obama presidency!

Works for me!

Being president would be cutting into Hair's secession plans.

Here in Texas , we have a choice between diarrhea and loose stool for governor. And our democratic candidates are weak. I don't even know who they are.

Some of you are eager for Kay Bailey Hutchison to win. She's just another good ole boy with less hairspray that un-American Rick. Kay's a former cheerleader and former debutante who's even dumber than Rick.

Dan   September 18th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

I guess the GOP just doesn't get it, the majority of people do not want the right wing fanatical religious values stuffed down their throats, the only group of people that would be impressed with this group are the neo cons that do not have the ability to think for themselves.

David   September 18th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

So the Values Voters want a secessionist as their presidential candidate? That's just too funny. I guess when they print their "Country First" posters they'll need to make sure they identify whether it's the Republic of Texas or the United States. They're even dumber than I thought.

In regards to Kay Bailey Hutchison, I don't agree with her policies but at least she's able to make coherent arguments. The GOP would do well to pick someone with a brain rather than someone with a wink and red meat. They continue to pick gamesmanship over substance. It's sad indeed.

awaitingliberalizationbyCNN   September 18th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Once again lovely comments from the left wing nut jobs. Then they cry racist or break down and cry like Pelosi, or demean actual taxpayers when some shovels the same crap back at them. They really ought to change the name of to Hypocritical Party rather the Democratic, real democrats left them long ago, not long after the "Great Society" was such a failure.

Big surprise that he asked for his name to be removed. As if America is going to elect a secessionist as President. It doesn't matter who speaks at this thing, there isn't a grown-up left in the Repub party. Until someone stands up to the right-wing southern white racists who have hijacked the party, there's no future for them. Grow a pair and stop lying and obstructing and speak out against all the hate-speech. Then, perhaps they won't be a national embarrassment anymore. I'm not holding my breath.

I had a Republican co-worker friend of mine tell me she voted for Obama over Clinton in the primary, but voted Republican in the General. Can I do that?

I

Matt   September 18th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

For those of you bashing ALL Republicans, take a look at Ron Paul's policies. Even though he's in office as a Republican, most of the neo-conservatives that make up that party don't even include them in debates or decisions. Why? Because he's not the modern, empire-building, religious wingnut like the rest of them. At one of the primary debates last year, the questioner even asked Dr. Paul if he was confused and if he was at the correct debate. Want better foreign policty? He's not only for getting out of the two wars, he's for pulling our troops out of all countries as to not interfere in anyone else's politics. Want more decisions made at the local level? He wants to limit federal government powers and let states make their own decisions. Want to keep more of your money in your pockets? He wants to limit spending, and lower taxes. Want real health care reform? This DOCTOR wants to allow health insurers to sell across state lines, which will increase competition and drive down costs. Now tell me how your precious Obama can beat that?

JR   September 18th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Someone beat me to it, but this guy is 'all hat and no cattle'. This is the same guy who has been trying to ram through the biggest land grab/infringement on property rights since the Louisiana Purchase (the "Trans Texas Corridor") for all his 'good ol' boy developer buddies', domestic AND foreign. THAT'S limited government?

Why do you think we call him "Governor Hair"? It's not for the number of brain cells under it.

Paulo   September 18th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Perry pulled out of the straw poll when he found out it was for president of the wrong country – the United States and not Texas.

What a Joke   September 18th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

If there is anyone out there who is an Obama supporter, you can almost rest assure that he will be elected again with this group of people. No one has stepped forth to show true leadership except to just go with flow for whatever the cause. One would have thought that Pawlenty would have been a good choice, but when he made the unneccessary comments about Obama giving a stay in school, get your education speech, he made himself part of the same pact of insert yourself so you can get on tv even when the issue is a nonissue. At least Romney has kept quiet, but that could be his downfall – he's quiet. A leader cannot be quiet and must show that he can a) stand up for whats right even when that means going against your party and b) learning to tell your party to stop with the nonsense about birthers and tenthers and seceding which will not help get you back in any type of office. Take hint: You need to get the independent vote and the youth vote, these continued antics will get you neither.

I do wonder what the Democratic straw poll for 2012 looks like - anyone really betting these days that Obama is a lock to be the Dem's candidate. By that time he will have about the same amount of real executive experience that he had when started his run the last time around.

I do agree that straw polls at this time are worth about the value of a handful of straw. But at least in this list there are five state governors. generally successful in their terms, and a former Speaker of the House who actually performed that role with great success. The "Clinton" years were reasonably successful only because of the Republican Congress and Gingrich's leadership. Ron Paul is at least a principled representative which is more than I could say about 80% of Congress (R's and D's)

I doubt that my comments will be accepted, but here they are anyway. What a joke!!!!! Rick Perry is scary, as are all of the aforementioned names. They are no match for our President. I can not wait for the election in 2012. I am a 63-yr. old woman and have enjoyed watching these nuts try to bring President Obama down. He is on the right of the people and is working for the American people. He is concerned for us, whereas, the Republican party cares nothing for us. They continue to use scare tactics and haven't figured out yet that the majority of us are laughing at them!!!!!! Once they are out of power for a few years and we get some younger, more common sense people in Congress, hopefully things will turn around. President Obama is the best thing that has happened to this country and some people can not stand it. He will succeed in all that he attempts because he was put in place for a reason and for two seasons.

Wow. They figure no one will vote for a Black guy twice, so they could have anyone run, right? Screwy rabbits..

Angie in PA   September 18th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

He wants to pull out of the USA Too Doesnt he?

DonnaLee   September 18th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Let 'em all pull out. The Rethuglican party is tied to the wingnut right.

And after the 2010 election cycle has been completed the Rethuglicans will be no more.

Then we'll all be singing: Ding dong the witch is dead ...

GOPer   September 18th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Rick "seccession" Perry has bigger concerns to worry about it. The other GOPers, however, will gladly continue their obsessions with power. How about another straw poll? For an election over three YEARS away. Forget governing...Party First! Sad.

And we have seen the fundamentalist, so-called "values" (i.e. hypocrisy) from C-Street. Thanks, but no thanks.

Allen from Texas   September 18th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

This Texas resident doesn't think Perry is fit for President, Governor, Mayor, City Council, or even PTA. GO Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison!!!

Pam   September 18th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Maybe he should resign so he can help the people of Texas from outside Texas.

gl, From Pittsburgh   September 18th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

The potential Republican candidates on the straw poll ballot are: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

WHAT A JOKE OF A LIST! NOT ONE OF THEM HAVE A CHANCE.

RICK SANTOURUM NEED HIS HEAD CHECK IF HE REALLY THINK HE IS PRESIDENTALY MATERIAL.

JHG   September 18th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

This idiot has been talking secession! Doesn’t he want to be the President of Texas? A straw poll is a long ways away from the Whitehouse.

Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are all out of the mainstream. Neither one has a snowballs chance in hell of unseating President Obama.

All they have is the far right of their base and those dogs can’t hunt!

diridi   September 18th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

this texan idiot is just like Bush....

gl, From Pittsburgh   September 18th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

Sara Palin what a joke!

Steve in CT   September 18th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

A very impressive lineup. I hope it's kept clean fron the start. the administration taking over in 2012 will need to be a well oiled machine, a team ready before the election and already working stratigy, not for the race but for the damage control needed to save what's left of the USA. Without that our best chance will be that the doomsday profits are right about 12/21/12. God help us all.

gl, From Pittsburgh   September 18th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was originally included on 2012 Presidential Straw Poll ballot at this weekend's Values Voter Summit in Washington, but his staff requested that his name be removed.

SMART MOVE. He know he don't have a chance with his seccsion statement.

Jackie in Dallas   September 18th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

We don't want him as Governor, either! I intend to work very hard that "foot-in-mouth" Perry does NOT get another term!

Jefe   September 18th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Conservative?? But everyone mentioned in the article was a big-spending, foreign-interventionist, privacy-rights bashing, free-choice despising, extremist left-wing so-called Neocon. Very few Republicans are Conservatives.

Mary Lou Hamm   September 18th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

we want Kay Kay Kay

not Rick Parry, she will take it from him this March 2010

Reformed Republican   September 18th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Atta boy Rick...The world thinks your a right-wing nut job already so there is no sense giving them any more ammo by going to a "Values Voters" conference made up flat-earther, white evangelical crazies.

Besides, there will be plenty of jeezuz freaks from below the Mason-Dixon line there already, one more like you will just get lost among all the bible thumpin' vigilante groups anyway...

JEAN - ATL   September 18th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Wackos all!

W Spivey   September 18th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

He gone be the new czar for the Mexican Government

Ron   September 18th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Joe Wilson is missing from this list. Palin-Wilson 2012. Would'nt that plain talking duo scare the crap out of people!

SMP   September 18th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

For which country would he be running for President, the United States of America, or the new country he wants to form when Texas secedes from the rest of the union?

I didn't vote for him for Governor, and I certainly won't be again. I wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher. Even though I know a Democrat has little chance of winning any high political position in Texas, at least I have the satisfaction of knowing this idiot never got my vote.

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   September 18th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

Republicans crack me up. LOL.

Dominican mama 4 Obama   September 18th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Talk about the usual low-life, no-morals, can't-speakie-d-English suspects. More a like car full of clowns. They could'nt spell leadership between the lot of them, much less execute it.

Polar Bears Against Palin   September 18th, 2009 12:08 pm ET

What a blister on the state of Texas. Well, they deserve this right-wing nut. They keep voting for hime.

patriot   September 18th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

No Palin? Too busy with Facebook and Twitter, I suppose.

Connie, Indiana   September 18th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

My god is this the worst of the worse..Hypcrites all of them..Pence in my opinion is a pure and simple idiot, some of the crap that comes out of his mouth is unbelieveable, unless that is what you believe. This list is good fodder for SNL.

Aunt Bea and Opie   September 18th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Perry is a total dud and will loose to Hutchison.

Slappy White   September 18th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Republicans are looking to that snarky Rick Santorum to get them back in the White House?

He lost his Senae seat by 20 points in 2006.

They must be worse off than anybody thought.

No wonder they're running around, screaming all this radical nonsense...

No Goodhair 2010   September 18th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Perry was afraid he would get 0 votes. What a wimp. Perry is a career politician seeking vanity and self-glorification. He needs to retire and get a regular job like everyone else.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   September 18th, 2009 11:58 am ET

straw poll? should be re-named BOOB POLL

Nelson Colorado Springs Co.   September 18th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Where is Steel name or why isn't it in The potential Republican candidates on the straw poll ballot are: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Terry from Texas   September 18th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is running against Perry for the governor's seat. I hope she wins. We'll have a better governor and hopefully a better Senator as a result. The good citizens of my native state have a strong preference for not-too-bright leadership.

Henry Miller, Libertarian, Cary, North Carolina   September 18th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Given a year in which basically everything Ron Paul predicted either happened or is showing signs of being about to happen, it will be interesting to see how he fares in in the poll.

felicia   September 18th, 2009 11:49 am ET

Please none of the names they just named, stand a snowball chance in he!! to win against President Obama.

victim of republican greed   September 18th, 2009 11:48 am ET

That is too bad. Certainly anyone who promotes seceding from the US would be a top candidate from the party of wingnuts.

Jethro   September 18th, 2009 11:48 am ET

Out of that bunch, Pawlenty and Romney are the only two with even a slight chance of winning the election.
