Obama: Family 'will stand in line like everybody else' for vaccine

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The nation's first family will not get any special dispensation when it comes to the much awaited vaccine for the H1N1 virus, President Obama tells CNN.

Asked about plans for his family's health in an interview that airs Sunday on CNN's State of the Union, the president said he intends to consult with his Health and Human Services Secretary and the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"And whatever they tell me to do, I will do," Obama told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King.

"[H]ere's what I guarantee you," Obama also told King, "We want to get vaccinated. We think it's the right thing to do. We will stand in line like everybody else. And when folks say it's our turn, that's when we'll get it."

The president said high-risk populations for the H1N1 virus - like health care workers, pregnant women - and children will be first in line for vaccinations against the disease, also known as the "swine flu." So he speculated that his two daughters, who are both under the age of 12, would likely get vaccinated before him.

"I suspect that I may come fairly far down the line," Obama said.

He's not saying anything unreasonable. He will get the shot when the people in his cabinet say he should. I hope he's first in line. His other remarks simple seem to point to two issues: 1) his family will get vaccinated – thereby showing he feels the vaccine is safe and important; and 2) he will not insist on his family getting special treatment, but that they will be vaccinated when their 'risk' group is vaccinated.

As for the level of nastiness in some of these posts, that is a lot of energy wasted that could otherwise turn into something positive, no matter what your life view or political affiliations.

You can stand in line if you want to. As for me, I will get the flu from all of you that get the shot, so I won't have to pay for it.

    C Diamante:

Your argument that a lot of our fundamental knowledge on physics, chemistry, and biology is in the theory and modeling stage is a bit meaningless.

That scientific thought has been driven by theories and models has been true since before the natural philosopher Heraclitus' theory of Logos underlying all change in the universe and will be true forever, so long as we continue to make efforts to investigate and understand the universe.

According to the best scientific models, the most current paradigms and theories developed by some of the smartest people on the planet, GLOBAL WARMINIG IS REAL AND MUST BE DEALT WITH NOW.

I, for one, commend the President for saying that his family will stand in line like everybody else for vaccination.

I understand that Obama has to try endlessly and fruitlessly to appease the extremists (i.e. hardcore right-wingers) in our country, but come on. He's the President! As our leader and our face to the world, he needs to be protected and deserves a vaccination just as much as all of our elderly, children, pregnant women, and health care workers.

It is irresponsible reporting to continue to call the H1N1 virus "swine flu" as the CDC has said it has nothing to do with pigs. When news is corrected it is up to newspeople to adjust accordingly. People are still avoiding pork because of this misunderstanding. News people are to spread information, not mis-information.

New Age Democrat: "Family 'will stand in line like everybody else' for vaccine

Does anyone believe this for a second? I'm tired of the campaign speech and this is nothing but a bold face lie."

I actually do believe it. You on the other hand wouldn't believe him if he told you water is wet. You have your mind made up about him long before facts to the contrary arise, if they ever do. You're showing your true colors, and they are red.

    New Age Democrat, my foot...

I think that Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, all of the employees of Fox Noise and all those lovely Tea Baggers and gun toters should absolutely be last AFTER the president. After all, if you are this tough why do you need to be vaccinated before the Commander in Chief? Having said that, out of annoyance at these nuts, God Bless President Obama and his family. Stay strong; not all of us are nuts. We love you no matter what. :-)

    Jackson,

Now that you're committed to not watching CNN, and that you're committed to proving that Rangel stole your prom date, do you think you could find a different message board to spread your fictional tales?

    Thanks...

Most Americans would like to move FORWARD into the 21st Century, not BACKWARD to the era of McCarthyism and right-wing hysteria.

But, if those on the right continue to obstruct, spread fear and lies, and are hell-bent on destroying the President of the United States, then perhaps they should leave the Union and form their own country, just as their predecessors did in 1861.

Only this time, Americans should just let them go in peace.

  11. wondering??

What he doesn't say is which exact vaccine they will get. I'm just wondering if they will subject their daughters to the adjuvant MF59 (not FDA approved as a preservative for use in children or any vaccine in the USA) in the H1N1 vaccine producted by Novartis or if they will insist on another formulation by the other 4 swine flu vaccine manufacturers. Check out Sanofi Pasteur, Medimmune (Flu Mist), Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, and CSL

I absolutely despise Obama and almost everything he has done since January. However, I think he should have an H1N1 flu shot as soon as possible. Though there is a ton of hype over the virus, we don't need him getting sick.

That being said, GET OFF THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL and get back to the WH to do some work. Stop trying to pitch your ideas. If you constantly have to defend your ideas, you plainly are not convincing a good segment of people.

Yes, I think it wonderful that the first family receive their H1N1 vaccinations. A very easy, simple way to be done with them...

And before I'm attacked by the lunatic left/center conglomeration that I am some sort of racist, let it be known that I voted for the one true "black" person in the presidential race last November: Cynthia McKinney. I certainly didn't vote for OREO cookie NOBAMA!

As long as NOBAMA allows the BCCI part II led by Timothy Geithner to get away with the rape and pillage of the American people and the
American dream, I will have nothing to do with him. He is as bad as BUSH! They both belong in a gulag in Siberia; shall they be cell mates, too! That'll be a victory over tyranny that all America will enjoy!

    To all the right wingers:

I don't think you should get the swine flu vaccine. It's all a big government plot to rob you of $20, which clearly none of you can afford. (Why is that?)

In fact, I'm pretty sure that the feds will soon be turning the entire medical industry into a giant scheme to create a vast socialist One World Nation under Grand Lord Obama. (I don't exactly know how, but I'm sure Glenn Beck will soon have a special co-hosted by Orly Taitz to tell you all about it.) So don't get any more treatment for anything at all. Don't trust doctors or scientists, with their so-called "facts." It's all a bunch of elitist hooey designed to tax you into poverty to support the 66 million Americans who voted for the "black Messiah" and refuse to work. (Don't be fooled by government reports saying only 14.9 million Americans are unemployed, it's another government lie. Plus, ACORN and Obama's crooked Chicago political machine must have stuffed the ballot boxes with at least 50 million fraudulent votes.)

So, keep smoking–it doesn't cause cancer, that's all a liberal Democratic government ploy to rob you of your God-given freedoms! Antibiotics? Shmantibiotics! Global warming, unsafe water, pollution-tainted air–lies, lies, lies, all lies created by a secret Muslim cabal that's taken our country away from us under the guise of a democratic election! Everyone knows the only way to fix things is tax cuts (but only for the wealthy, since they create all those jobs). And guns! More guns, please!

Big business is your friend. Corporate America lives only to serve your interests. It's not about money for the insurance companies, it's about people. Fox News is fair and balanced. Any "proof" or "videotaped footage" or "documented emails and memos" that seem to say otherwise are just–you guessed it– more lies by the evil libs who want to turn America into a Communist Nazi state, like France or Sweden.

Please, I implore you, ignore every bit of evidence, reason, and rationality that crosses your path. Then maybe once your own stupidity has thinned your ranks, the rest of us can actually go about making positive changes for real people.

Well, President Bush spent the first several months of his presidency in Crawford chopping wood rather than doing ANYTHING so I cannot say that I have not liked anything that President Obama has done! That said, he should go ahead and get the shot as a symbol to all of us to take H1N1 seriously.

As with everything else, the rightwingnuts have attacked as predicted.

Were it not for lies and myths, conservatives would have nothing to say. Truth is a foreign language to them.

Realistically, the Obama family should not "stand in line." The moron behind them could be exercising his "right" to carry a weapon and given the emotional instability they show, it really wouldn't be safe for anyone.

The President's conventional common sensical approach to protect his family from H1N1 is a flashpoint for his political opposition?

    Note to Keith in Austin:

Just so you know, my brother-in-law and his wife are both physicians, and I dare say they pay a hell of a lot more in taxes than you do. I'm also pretty sure thay have jobs and advanced educations. You know, because they're DOCTORS. They, like the vast majority of doctors in the U.S. are all for some kind of public option.

So why don't you try listening to someone besides Glenn Beck, and look up the meaning of socialism, and check the dictionary on how to spell "opposed" and oh, I don't know, maybe get a clue.

  22. The new GOP party of NO, racism, and hate is emerging and least you Rightwing NUTS forget, Bush had 47 Czars

White presidents have always had prefrential treatment; but a black president will work twice as hard just to prove himself because of his skin color...he is the president, but the treatment is different; while GW Bush and Dick Cheney were hidden in bunkers on 9/11, I am it had been this black president, he would have been left alone in the oval office to sweat it out just because of his skin color....you may not agree with me, but racism is real; even against a sitting United States president!!!!

alot of you people are idiots. I seriously doubt the President meant he would literally go to a Wal-Greens and physically "stand in line" to get a flu shot from the local pharmacist. He means he will get his flu shot after more at risk members of our society. Meaning after health care workers, pregnant women, the elderly, children, etc. People that take that statment literally are the same people that think Noah actually loaded 2 of every animal on an ark to save them from the great flood. Grow up America.
