South Carolina congressman Joe Wilson has raked in more than $2 million since he shouted at President Obama.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – South Carolina Republican congressman Joe Wilson has now raised over $2 million in campaign contributions since he shouted "You lie!" at the president earlier this month.

A campaign aide confirmed that Wilson surpassed the $2 million mark on Monday.

Wilson and his 2010 opponent, Democrat Rob Miller, each raised more than $1.5 million in the week after Wilson's outburst, which occurred during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress on September 9.

The House voted to formally reprimand Wilson last week, amidst an aggressive online fundraising effort by the congressman's staff.

Miller is scheduled to visit Washington on Wednesday for a pair of fundraisers on Capitol Hill.

Take the money out of politics and you might find better public servants and better policies.
It is insane and obscene to allow money to interfere with elections , does that mean your vote is for sale..???

pretty sorry manners that sothern bell has. even if he is a good guy it is hard to imagine a situation where a congressman would think it is appropreate to yell at the president during a speech. I guess there are a lot of people with bad manners out there who want to give him money, this is a bid president.

How stupid that this wing nut would collect 2 million because he has shown that civility is leaving America. And that shows what dim wits his supporters are that they would send him money for showing such disrespect to the president of the United State. Agree with him or disagree with him, President Obama is owed nothing less than the respect his office demands. How sad for our country.

An aide "confirmed" that Wilson had taken in $2 million? Confirmed what? His own web site's unverified claims?

The truth is we will not know how much he has taken in until he has to file his campaign's monthly report.

Meanwhile, his opponent, Rob Miller, has raised an ACTUAL $1.5 million, which can be verified on ActBlue.com.

Unless CNN is actually working for Wilson's campaign, I would expect your "journalists" to take the campaign's inflated numbers with a grain of salt.

nice, you ensure your name will be the answer to many many political jeopardy question AND rake in $$$.

Joe Wilson is such an easy name to remember too.

But why does this come from a congressman from South Carolina, of all the 50 states? I'm sure there are other congressmen who feel just as strongly about this that are not from one of the southern states?

It's not a surprise to learn Joe Wilson's "raised" so much money. The Republicans are grasping at anything they think has traction, even if that traction is based on a complete fallacy...and it is.

Republicans want to do anything they can to convince enough people they're smarter than President Obama, when they're not.

Republicans think they can fool some of the people some of the time, and quickly realize they can fool other Republicans all of the time. So, of course Joe Wilson's "raised" that much money...the sheep are easily fleeced when jammed down the Republican noise machine.

So what this says is... you can basically disrespect the highest office in the land with rude, out of line outbursts and get rewarded for it....

It also says there is a good portion of people in society, so ignorant, that they'd actually part with their (supposedly) hard earned capitalist dollar to support this clown...

If he got $2mil for heckling, how much should Nancy Pelosi get for calling the Tea Party group Nazis and astroturf? I think they should really create a new political game show called "Who Wants to be a Czar?" Republicans want to drag their feet, impede progress, and throw temper tantrums...so they can turn around next year and say President Obama was a failure... but in the end the people that are going to be hurt the most are the American people. Republicans have no shame and no decency enough to face reality.

Had Wilson done his job and READ the bill that President Obama was discussing he'd have known it FORBIDS health insurance coverage for illegal aliens. His ignorance thus made his heckling of "You lie!" itself a lie. Once again we have a Conservative Republican projecting their own issues onto others, a pot calling the kettle black. Why any INFORMED American citizen would give Wilson money to reward him for rudeness and poor job performance defies all logic and good sense.

What about the people who inhabit the reasonable middle? Where is our party? Who represents us? Anyone who's not extreme is thought to be weak or uninformed or wishy-washy. Well, I'm not wishy-washy in being sickened by our slimy politics. If we're the greatest country on Earth, why do our political leaders so often act in a way that shames us? Speaqk up, people. Good for Joe Wilson, showing Obama that the peolpe trust and like Joe. The F 16's left Wisconsin the early am for Iraq and Afghan. and this makes Obama and his campaign words a poor joke on the american people. Obama was on TV last night and not in Wisconsin to explain why to the service persons and to the families why the sending more over seas to war. Congress should change their resolution against Joe Wilson and apologize on national public TV. As for out bursts Obama has done the same on TV and not been censured. Just more proof that the party of "family values" ..... is a completely phoney bunch of malcontents ...... represented directly and indirectly by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.

The GOP, especially during and after the Bush-Cheney experiment, is mostly a political party of selfish, arrogant, rude, belligerant extremists.

There is no room for middle ground for them .... ever.

They have no respect (or civility) for anyone who is not their own ...... or any idea that is not their own.

The fact that this guy raised ANY money after what he did shows exactly what is wrong with politics in America (I'm a Republican) and voters. We really need to reform campaign finance laws and force politicians to run on the issues and the media to display the issues; PACs and lobbyists are helping polarize this country and it just provides the media with more content, regardless of how stupid.

Don't think for a second other politicians or wannabes aren't paying close attention to how much his stunt, real or contrived, is paying off-be prepared to see more of the same.

If Wilson is truly sorry, a grand gesture would be to either return or donate that money-for his campaign to profit from poor behavior sends a bad message to children, and it would also set the standard for any other politician who is contemplating such a ploy.

He deserves it, Obama was lying. If you blatenly lie before the house, you shold be called on it. Obama is supposed to be workijng for the people of the US, not personally involved in his own adjenda. He is no longer a communitiy organizer. He is a president of the US, or is supposed to be. We are seeing all the corruptionin his whitehouse and people connected to the whitehouse.

Do your job, I would say do what you promissed to do while you were runing for election, but we see you have allready blown those promises. You cannot be trusted to do the right thing. Obama is a noe-way president, and that way is not the american way.

The Senator has been lying ever since the "You Lie" incident. He's made several false claims. Among them the "fact" that he was a real estate lawyer: he lied. And that he helped a prominent gov't official's daughter obtain a job in the South Carolina legislature: he lied about that too. I can only conclude that this habitual liar is also lying about how much money he's raised also.

It is amazing how much you can do with your name in the news. I just hope that come November 2010 he can look for something new to do because I wouldn't want someone who can't control himself in office. Who knows what else he might do or ask for if he can't control himself. If he had said it after the joint session or during the Republican response, that would have been fine.

I am sorry that the country I live in rewards this type of inappropriate behavior.

I am assuming since he is rude. That he will be honest enough to quit taking government, and vet benefits for himself, and his family.

That he will do everything he can to provide health care for the many poor people who listen to this garbage, and believe the government would hurt them more then the insurance companies.

Joe Wilson needs to be clear that the opinion he so rudely expressed is his, not a reflection of any lobbiest money he might be taken.

There is also the issue I believe to be real.....South Carolina is not a state that elects representatives the reflect all of South Carolina, or even a Christian point of view.

So we are in a donation duel between Conservatives who support anyone who opposes Obama in any way and Democrats who want to express disapproval of Wilson's carefully planned spontaneous outburst.

This is more Conservative street theater. Conservative leaders want to depict politics as a duel between personalities. Their goal is to prove they are better people than their opponents, not to compare policies or proposals. Politics is not about personal honor, who's telling the truth, who slept with whom, or who has courage and who doesn't. It's about the economy, health care, global warming, population growth, the national infrastructure, the national debt, education, affordable college, drug laws, terrorism, etc.

This just shows what type of class these big dollar Republican politicians have. Anything to gain more money, something the average American doesn't have any more. Way to show the world how we treat each other. Stuff like this is ridiculous, I want a job, food, and shelter, but our politicians rather insult the leader of our nation rather than working to lower my medical bills. I had staph infection two months ago and had to be admitted into a hospital. After insurance, it still cost me $2,500. If this is not a problem for the average American then I do not know what is. If politics has come down to this, then we are all doomed on this planet. Stuff like this takes away from important issues like health care, jobs, the environment, climate change, and hunger. If our politicians cannot get around there differences and work things out on this health care problem or any other issues that we have in this country then I see no hope for the future.

To know that people have sent this jerk 2 million dollars is really a sign of the sad, sad state of affairs of this country.

To show that people approve of his lack of civility and poor judgement shows the partisan bickering and split going on in this country assuring that we will never again show the world leadership that we as a nation used to hold in this troubled world.

Instead of working together to pull this country out of the mess that we are in, the two parties and the split of our population's ideology will assure the downfall of our once great nation.

Great. You are blatantly disrespectful of the President in a very public speech and your reward for your stupidity is a ton of disgruntled Americans who now pay attention to you as their "voice". Gotta love the "angry mob" component of democracy who best voice is shouting rather than constructive debate about the issues. Soundbites and political noise is helping speed this country to new levels in instability.

OK...who cares? Enough covering this guy and the quick money he made being a jerk. Just goes to show Americans have the money to throw away on things they want to throw it away to. They hardly dont ever want to spend money on anything important.

It is really sad when the American people who are sending this money to him, because he was a loud mouth and inconsiderate man, can say they are good Americans. It just goes and shows the rest of the world that we aren't any better than the countries we are trying to help. Pretty sad I think. Some people just have no morals or a conscience.

Joe Wilson should not be glorified for being un-civil to the President of the United States of America. Sadly, most of us are cheering for him though, because we do not have even an ounce of respect for this man. We gave him the benefit of the doubt time and again. He seemed to be a kind, intelligent and honest family man, devoted to the causes that would help America and the world.

When reality set in, we couldn't take back our votes, but we could start a movement of peaceful dissention and renew our oaths of allegiance to our 'One nation under God'. 2010 will see the 'change we can believe in', swept away with a tidal wave of opposition to this administration's policies.

He he he.....let the wingnuts waiste all their money in an uncompetative district. I like it.

In 1856 Senator Preston Brooks – naturally of South Carolina – beat Senator Charles Sumner with his cane. The beating was so severe that Sumner passed out in the aisle in a pool of blood, and proceeded to spend the next several weeks in the hospitial. Brooks broke his cane in the beating. Following the assault South Carolina wing-nuts sent Brooks dozens of canes, most bearing the slogan "hit him again."

The speech that Sumner had give that so angred the wing-nuts....was against slavery. South Carolina; first to secede.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

I'm sure Mr. Wilson did this for notoriety and to become a "hero" to the fools of his party. And it surely hasn't hurt his bank account either. Glad he was called out for it by Congress and hopefully this Bozo will be voted out of office. We don't need this kind of politics in our country.

Is anyone surprised? A large cross-section of the US would like to see Obama fail at any cost. Joe Wilson was completely wrong in his outburst. he disrespected the office first then Obama. However, some Americans simply do not care as long as Obama fails. Some are in FACT motivated by race others by hate (of liberals) and still others by genuine philosophical differences. Respectable news organizations around the world have confirmed that President Obama in fact did not lie. Illegal aliens will NOT be covered under the new health plans being proposed. Just because the emergency rooms and hospital rooms in hospitals around the country have many aliens in them right now, does not mean Obama lied. It also does not mean that Obama's policies allowed illegals in the country to start with. Who DID allow so many illegals in the country should be the REAL question...
SO, if in fact Obama did not lie, then what is the real reason behind these funds being raised? Would CNN even bother to do a "reality check" on that question? The right is always whining about the liberal media this and liberal media that. Truth be known, the media is protecting the radical conservatives and giving them free air campaign time by covering their drivel everyday. No wonder Obama felt it necessary to go on a media blitz. Wilson didn't even tell the truth about Obama lying! Wilson tried to paint the health care bill as if it specifically sets aside money for illegal immigrants. (his words! check the interviews he gave subsequently) Obama told the truth. That this bill does not give money to illegal immigrants, that all the policies that were in place before his presidency that policed health care against abuse by illegals would be unchanged. That's the truth. Wilson is the one who lied. But I guess it's easier to rake in money from hate-mongering against immigrants than it is to actually address real subtance and issues. Fun fact: did you know that providing health services to illegal immigrants started under Bush Jr., because of legislation constructed and implemented by his own republican party? Why not talk about that, Mr. Wilson?

    ------–
Looks to me like most people agree with Wilson and willing to put money on it.
    ------–
So are you saying that the side with the most money must have the most support? That's what it sounds like to me.

If I agree with Candidate A and give him $5, and four people agree with Candidate B and each give him $1, does that mean that more people agree with Candidate A, since he has more money? If we go with that reasoning, then why even bother with elections? Candidates can just bid for office, with the one who can come up with the most cash getting the job.

When a politician yells "you lie" in a room full of politicians, how does anyone know who is being yelled at?

Newsflash: This just in – the adage that "Fools and their money are soon separated" has been proven!
S Carolina congressman Joe Wilson shows an amazing lack of respect, control and decorum, mistakenly channeling Sean Hannity during the Presidents recent joint congressional address. His cretinous outburst attracts nearly $2 million in donations from conservative flies attracted to the stink.

Of course Obama was lying. Why do you think the republican is raising more money despite getting out of the gate after his dem challenger? 1 trillion dollars over ten years and deficit neutral? Come on now – how stupid do you think we are?

On Sunday, Barack Obama played ignorant on the situation with ACORN. Obama told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “Frankly, it’s not really something I’ve followed closely. I didn’t even know that ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money.

That's another fat lie HBO tells. He didn't know about ACORN ? Yea, right, just like he didn't know about the TeaBaggers. That's Ok Obama you will know who they are come 2010.

BTW, Joe Wilson himself, along with much of the republican party voted FOR the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act (2003) that specifically allowed hospitals to be reimbursed for treating illegal immigrants. He was in support of helping illegal immigrants through the Bush years. It's only during Obama that he suddenly changed his mind.

Are we supposed to be suprised that the state of South Carolina agrees with a moron? They already had a HUGE sex scandle this year, but their governor is still liked in the state, so I'm not suprised the morons of South Carolina vote for even larger morons.

Good job South Carolina, you look like hill billies to me.

Just for one day- I wish all of this commenters could have someone tell them the truth as oppose to some politican stroking our ignorance of the facts.
Follow the money and the power. If Clinton was correct, then the power players in a $900 billion industry don't want things to change. They think it the most intelligent thing to do by paying twice the cost for health that other countries do.
Message to TEA Party - the people who got your money got your country. Your marching in the wrong direction.

The problem is that there are a few people in this country who are bigoted and racist. Yes, some are truly concerned about what is going on, but were they concerned when Bush was spending trillions of dollars on the Iraq war? No!!!! Joe Wilson is an idiot and the people who support him are idiots. We will see in 2010. I don't even live in South Carolina, but I will be sending Miller money to counteract anything that Joe Wilson does. The Republicans are just angry because they lost the 2008 election and are at the bottom of the ladder. And if they continue their mudslinging vitriol, they will remain there. The American people are sick and tired of their LIES and their nastiness toward a President who has nothing but the interests of the American people at heart.

Has long as Obama is having a hard time with the definition of just what a TAX is? He's just running his lips to those American people who knows better. And you thought Bush was a bad liar.

It stands to reason, that after hearing all the lies that Mr. Obama has been constantly spouting, a person might just "REACT"... I can only imagine how frustrated Joe Wilson felt when he heard another BARE FACED ! lie.... I hope the good people of South Carolina keep him in office for a long time........................
