FBI stops plot to bomb Schock's office

The FBI stopped a plot to bomb Illinois Republican Aaron Schock's office.

The FBI stopped a plot to bomb Illinois Republican Aaron Schock's office.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Aaron Schock said Friday that he was "grateful" to the FBI for thwarting a terrorist attack targeting his office in Springfield, Illinois.

"My office was notified today of the attempted terrorist attack on both the Federal Building and my Congressional Office in Springfield," Schock said in a statement. "I am incredibly grateful to the FBI for their fine work in preventing this terrorist attack."

The Illinois Republican's office was reportedly the "secondary target" of Michael C. Finton, also known as "Talib Islam."

Finton had been supplied with a van filled explosives, which were harmless, by an FBI officer posing as an al Qaeda operative. Finton reportedly then drove to the Paul Findley Federal Office Building and Courthouse, which is close to Schock's office, and attempted to detonate the explosives with a cell phone. Finton was arrested immediately.

Wow, there are a lot of conspiracy theories going on in these comments. For goodness sake, can't we just say "Job Well Done" and leave it at that? Or does every good or bad deed by members of our govenrment have to be dissected by followers of both parties until the deed has been skewed so far out of whack that nobody remembers what the deed was anymore???

For crying out loud people, get a LIFE.

The level of stupidity in these comments is astounding.

"President Obama, his administration, and federal government officials are doing an amazing job of defending America and keeping us safe."

You do realize that it's entirely possible, and even probable, that the plot was uncovered because of Bush's policies and the programs he instituted, right?

No, you wouldn't realize that. Party love and your Obama hero worship are too much for you to make an objective political judgment.

    CNN won't post this, right?

I would have no problem believing the Republican Party planted it themselves. That then allows them to scream about national security.

I am more worried about their lunatic fringe who murder abortion doctors and blow up their clinics and their NRA nuts who carry loaded weapons to public rallies.

It is the Republican Party who is inciting violence in our nation through their hate speech and refusal to call down their racist element and their lunatic fringe. They should be denying their legitimacy and distance themsevles from these people – but not one Republican will act honorably and denounce these dangerous people.

Congratulations to the FBI however for their continued excellent work in catching and stopping these types of domestic terrorism. Americans are FAR safer with President Obama as our brilliant leader. Unlike the war-loving Republicans, he is a peacemaker and restoring trust and valuable alliances with other world leaders through excellent diplomacy. He actually thinks before he acts!

What's with all these terrorists coming out of the wood works with their plots? They know we have a weak president and here they come. Terrorists knew not to try anything when Bush was here.

So a year into the office, 911 happened. Bush gets the blame. And a year into the office, this plot gets discovered, and Obama gets the credit? 911 happened because Clinton did not do much after the trade center was bombed the first time, along with two embassies and one warship. This plot is stopped because of the security measures that Bush put together (and the left is trying very hard to dismental.) No, Obama doesn't get the credit at all. It belongs to Bush and Chaney squarely. Pelosi should be stopped before she totally defeats the FBI, the true hero here. We found one plot. There may be more. FOUR planes were used by the terrorists on Sept 11.

I'm amazed at the comments here. Either Obama is being praised for such a job well done, or else the entire story was supposedly made up by the Republicans to promote their up-and-comer. What is wrong with you people (yes you people)? I doubt that Obama was overly involved with this plot (most presidents haven't been since Hoover) and how can anyone assume that this was made up? Were Obama so involved in this whole scenario, would he waste millions of dollars to promote a Republican? I don't think so

It appears that Schock wasn't specifically targeted; his office just happened to be across from the federal courthouse, and Finton was hoping to score some collateral damage. Still, a good job on the part of the FBI, even if these recent would-be terrorists seem to be anything but intellectual giants.

Good work! But I'm honestly more afraid of the Glenn Beck fans than I am of Al Quada right now. The Beckerheads are sounding more like terrorists than anyone else right now!

I had no idea that a political party could be made up of such greedy, rude, hateful, uncivilized people, but the GOP seems to have pulled it off.

The Republicans don't run the FBI. They have nothing to do with the investigation.

But you are correct; you have noooo way of knowing right from wrong anymore. That's why you're a Democrat.... and not to bright from what I can tell.

You are truly demented. The person carrying the weapon at the Tea Party Rally that got so much press was a BLACK man! Yes, there are African Americans concerned about what is happening to our country as well. But liberals, true racists that they are, call these African Americans "Uncle Toms". I am a conservative and would have NO problem with Colin Powell or Condy Rice as president. But I do have a problem with this president who is tearing the country, and its Constitution, apart.

Kevin in Ohio...You just can't give credit where credit is due. So besides for the FBI saving Congress Schock's behind, they also foiled a plot in Dallas and NYC. The Dept. of Homeland Security is actually functioning PROPERLY under this administration. Wake up and get off the Beck-feine.

Hate and ignorance is everywhere, all one has to do is read the comments from the GOPers posted here.

Even though I disagree with Aaron's politics (kid's young enough to be my son!) I would not want harm to come to him. However, the same is not true of the GOPers, each day you folks, convince us of your disrespect and hatred towards President Obama, whom the MAJORITY of Americans voted for, and will again.

I challenge you to find one single thing that Beck said that was not false. The truth is, you can't..... unless you take it out of context like the liberal crazies who tried to convince people he really killed a frog the other evening.

I love the lib playbook, that you minions get fed. Pick someone to hate every week (rush, hannity, beck, fox news)....It's obvious and old. Obama's policies are awful, so instead make up lies, and a new person to hate!
Debate the issues. Beck may be nuts, but he is uncovering a lot that the Obama-genuflecting media refuses to cover. No one should "cheerlead" their leaders. Regardless of parties, they must be constantly watched. Be american, quit bowing to King Obama.

Dutch's called setting up a defense infrastructure. The same people work in the FBI...but they are still under the rules Bush set-up. Do you really think the whole FBI is new under King Obama? Have a mind of your own.

    @ Kevin in Ohio:

Here is one example of what Beck has said that is a LIE,

" That healthcare will be available to illegals" Which is FALSE. If you would do some research and read HR 3200 article 246 it clearly sates:

" Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are NOT LAWFULLY present in the United States."

    Got it?

  21. Reality sets in

It is amazing how everyone on here thinks this is something to give Obama credit for... isn't it amazing how the policies Bush had put into place are the reason we have been kept safe since 9/11... and the policies liberals(AKA Clinton, Obama, Polosi) seek to destroy and cripple the very organizations that protect us?? How do you think 9/11 happened?? We should be thanking these men and woman of the FBI and CIA for doing there job, not throwing them under the bus and lying to the american people about how you had no knowledge of enhanced interogation techniques and let them do there jobs without worrying if another liberal is going to lie to save there own butts!

  25. WHAT????

    To 'Kevin in Ohio'

"But I do have a problem with this president who is tearing the country, and its Constitution, apart."

Stop drinking the moonshine in your neck of the woods. Bush and his draft doging cronies burned the Constitution beyond recognition and tore this country appart with their lies with their WMD, al-Qaeda in Iraq, smaller government, tax breaks for the rich, selective prosecution of law breakers, etc.

This article is about the FBI stopping several terrorristic plots. I guess the irony is that nobody was tortured.
