WASHINGTON (CNN) - When President Obama announced Judge Sonia Sotomayor as his choice to be the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice, he noted that she played a key role in helping bring an end to the 1995 Major League Baseball strike.

"Some say that Judge Sotomayor saved baseball," said Obama, referring to Sotomayor's ruling against the owners that brought the strike to an end.

On Saturday, Sotomayor returns to the baseball diamond – this time taking the field. She will throw out the first pitch at Yankees Stadium.

"Having Justice Sotomayor, a South Bronx native, participate in our yearly Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is very exciting, as she is an inspiration to so many," said Manuel García, Yankees director of Latino Affairs.

Wise Latina   September 26th, 2009 9:54 am ET

Like Obama, I'll bet she throws like a girl.

Now what will Chief Justice Roberts, who see himself as only an umpire calling balls and strikes, call this? He's been rather quiet after muffing the swearing in of President Obama ...

"NATIVE NEW YORKER", by Latin group Odyssey,
Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor's rise from Brooklyn streets to the nation’s court, reminds of that 1977 smash hit song "Native New Yorker". It is a great dance song that is also inspirational, and it is a classic still played on music radio stations. Sotomayor pulled herself by her "heels" (as oppose to bootstraps), and did it. You Go, Girl!

I'm sure she'll throw a much better pitch being a mexican lawyer.

rorsharch   September 26th, 2009 9:44 am ET

Yes but the question is: can a wise latina woman throw heat like Joba Chamberlin?

Sotomayor is interesting and intelligent. Baseball is very boring and very dumb. If you were to tape a baseball game and then cut out the time when the ball is not in play, how long would a baseball game be? I think about ten minutes. How can someone sit there for four hours to catch ten minutes of action.

Here's an idea that will make someone a fortune. Tape all baseball games and edit them as I have described above. A baseball fan could watch six complete games per hour. In four hours, he could watch 24 complete games.

Is she getting to throw it because she a smart articulate Latino lady or because of affirmative action?

better practice   September 26th, 2009 9:05 am ET

anything to make fun of a person is good for 24 hour cable
