Secret Service says it's investigating Facebook poll on Obama

There are more than 350,000 applications on Facebook. The company says it disables any that violate its terms.

(CNN) – The social networking site Facebook on Monday pulled a third-party application that allows users to create polls after a site member built a poll asking if President Barack Obama should be killed.

The U.S. Secret Service, the agency assigned to protect the president, has launched an investigation, agency spokesman James Mackin said.

"As is usually the case, our vigilant users reported it to us first," Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt told CNN. "The USSS (Secret Service) sent us an e-mail late this morning PDT asking us to take it down. At that point, it had already been removed and we let them know."

Schnitt said the application "was immediately suspended while the inappropriate content could be removed by the developer and until such time as the developer institutes better procedures to monitor their user-generated content."

Facebook allows third-party developers to create applications - such as polls and quizzes - which are then made available to Facebook users, who use the applications to create specific content. Users may choose to make their content available to the general population of Facebook or limit it only to their friends.

In this case, Schnitt said, the user made the poll asking whether Obama should be killed available to the general public.

The possible responses to the poll were "yes," "maybe," "if he cuts my health care" and "no."

Schnitt said the poll "appears to have been posted over the weekend."

–CNN Associate Producer Martina Stewart contributed to this report.

sick, sick, sick. the person that created this 3rd party application is a sick creature. how can they have so much hate? I pray for our President and his family and the sicko that created the application. This is so sad. All because President Obama is an African-American. Because of the color of his skin. May God help you people with that kind of hate.

Nobody in their right mind should wish harm to befall 0bama.

It'd mean we'd have to suffer under the incompetence of Joe Biden.

Now look where we are. Hate is AMONG us and next door to each of us. They are waiting for "Marching Orders" from FOX news and Hate Radio stations.

Anybody who lived in Europe in the OLD days will tell you that "THIS IS HOW IT ALL STARTED" and by the time come to realize what time it is, IT WILL BE LATE

This is so sad. I voted for Obama and am currently unhappy with his politics, but anyone whom would even participate in a quiz of that nature is sick.

It's sickening. If it's for political reasons, then that's being stupid, if it's for race reasons, well....that's 100% idiotic
We are all human beings, who live on the same world. Sure there are differences but does that mean ppl have to suffer for it? Hell no! Take the Holocaust for example: 6,000,000 Jews died just because of their religion. Take the US history as another example: slaves were treated with brutality, just because of their skin color
    It's disgusting

This is so wrong, and anyone who was foolish or twisted enough to be part of this should be ashamed. And quite frankly I have no problem with the CIA investigating these sick fools.

And I am a proud Conservative Republican who passionately disagrees with President Obama and the liberal agenda.

For all those who are crying about a movie made about the assassination of Bush please understand that the movie wasn't in any way suggesting that Bush be killed. The movie was a look at what might happen if Bush was killed. Whoever posted the Facebook poll clearly is making a veiled attempt into urging for the assassination of Obama. As much as you right wingers like to convince yourselves that Bush received worse treatment I would suggest that you study up on your American history. I know that is asking much since you all seem to think you know all about our history and the Constitution but you all really know very little.

This is stupid; the pollster simply asked a question. He didn't threaten anyone. The secret service should butt out IMO, because the last time I checked the Constitution protected free speech, whether people like that speech or not.

Obama hasn't gotten 400x more "threats" than other presidents. It's just that the media loves to play up these sorts of things so they can try to lump all dissenters of his policy into a basket of radical, far-right ideology in order to deligitimize criticism of Obama. They would much rather imply, somtimes more obliquely and other times directly, that America is a country of evil racists than to admit that Obama's policies just are too far left for mainstream America.
