Chicago-Rio Olympic battle 'close as hell'.
Chicago-Rio Olympic battle 'close as hell'.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (CNN) - As First Lady Michelle Obama and talk show host Oprah Winfrey wrapped up a day of furious behind-the-scenes lobbying of International Olympic Committee members here, two sources close to the process tell CNN that the battle between Chicago and Rio is heating up, as the two cities battle to host the 2016 Summer Games.

Madrid and Tokyo are also in the running, but sources close the process said that Chicago and Rio have emerged as the clear frontrunners, and are neck and-neck ahead of President Obama's arrival early Friday for a presentation to the IOC's 105 members, who will be voting later that day.

After a flurry of private conversations among IOC officials here, one of the sources close to the process said bluntly that it's "close as hell" between Chicago and Rio, as both Obama and Brazilian President Lula da Silva plan to make personal appeals to the voters on behalf of their cities on Friday morning.

In a sign of just how ferocious the lobbying is, King Juan Carlos of Spain and new Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama are also making personal pitches to the IOC members.

Despite widespread speculation that Obama is only flying all the way to Copenhagen for a four-hour lobbying mission because the White House has gotten a private heads-up that Chicago will win and he should come to claim victory, the sources close to the process insisted that the voting has not been pre cooked - so Obama is swooping in at some political risk, because it is unclear that the U.S. bid will be successful.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, who is already here in Copenhagen, has been privately giving the White House positive progress reports about what he's hearing from IOC members who suggest the U.S. bid is in good shape, according to the sources close to the process. But the sources cautioned that Obama and top aides are only cautiously optimistic, and want to wait until the actual voting before they contemplate any celebrations.

Programming Note: CNN Senior White House Correspondent Ed Henry is in Copenhagen with President Obama as he makes a personal pitch to the International Olympic Committee for Chicago to be named the host city of the 2016 Olympic Games. Tune in at 11 a.m. ET Friday as Ed discusses this and much more on CNN Radio’s “44 with Ed Henry.”

jmz   October 1st, 2009 10:26 pm ET

The Olympics COST money not generate it. money WE DO NOT HAVE. ask former hostsAnd all thoes koolaiders who think this will generate jobs are fooling themselves. Obama is not a chicago senator anymore. He is the president of the United states(sorry to say). he is supposed to create jobsf or the country NOT his old stomping grounds, and not for 1 city. Actually i change my mind. o commie can fight for the olympics..and when is socialist healthcare plan fails he can blame himself. tho hell prob just cry racism. BORAK OBAMA I PRAY YOU FAIL!! oh and Im from Chitown

Chad   October 1st, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Well, the corrupt gymnastics judges will fit right in if Chicago gets it. I mean, when Chicago gets it. Obama would not have taken the political risk if he had not known what the outcome would be.

You libs are so gullible, Obama is playing you for a fool.

Geri   October 1st, 2009 10:19 pm ET

The Obama's call Chicago "home". How much time have they spent there since he took office? Who pays for all the security and wages to have some one sit there & baby sit their house and make life miserable for the rest of the neighborhood. Most of the people overseas don't give a darn about Oprah and Daley and I'm tired of Michelle & Barry being Mr & Mrs Messiah. By the way I'm a democrat!!!!

Nevada dude   October 1st, 2009 10:18 pm ET

if Obama hadnt gone over there and make a personal appeal then all the GOP haters would have been criticizing him for not loving america enough. The GOP is so stupid i dont even listen to all their squaking any more. know-nothing, do-nothing, useless idiots they are. i can appreciate that obama is out there pulling for the US.

Chad   October 1st, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Obama: You are not in a campaign anymore. Focus on important things. Please just do your job dude!

Dan, TX   October 1st, 2009 9:59 pm ET

I hope that Olympics will be awarded to Rio and Barack the messiah has to come back empty-handed. He wants to go there to show his radical power. I am sure he will lose.

Brenda Goodman   October 1st, 2009 9:46 pm ET

Chicago has a 700 million dollar deficit. How are they going to pay for this fiasco? By obama slipping in a stimulous for chicago that we will pay for, so that his slum lord friends, like Valerie Jarret can make a killing by selling her ghetto properies for millions and have them torn down at no expense to her Habitat Company. The country should be informed where and how any monies are spent, and by whom.

Kansan   October 1st, 2009 9:46 pm ET

I think it is red blooded American to want the Olympics on our soil. It is also good business (there is an increase in international trade for the country that hosts the games. The entire country wins. Just like if we hosted a World's Fair. What is with this lack of pride for country and all the anti American chap from the right wingers? You Go Chicago, You Go America, Come on Olympics.

Jim   October 1st, 2009 9:34 pm ET

Please IOC members do not award the olympics to Chicago. Chicago political corruption is a national embarrasment and all you will accomplish by awarding the olympics to Chicago is to feed the corruption even more.

ib   October 1st, 2009 9:19 pm ET

With all that is going on in this country the only thing OBama is worried about is getting something for Chicago. What a joke for a president. Disgusting.

JK   October 1st, 2009 9:14 pm ET

It's disgusting the way the republicans just simply hate Obama, they don't care about the country but only to attack Obama for being a democrat...

It's a shame and the GOP shouldn't be called americans, please people wake up, watch other thing than fox news andn realize the truth

Let's hope all the attention Chicago has been getting lately regarding their huge issues with violence and crime is overlooked by the Olympic committee.

How about having the olympics in Detroit, they need the jobs more than most.. What city has lost the most jobs?

John Illinois   October 1st, 2009 6:08 pm ET

Just curious. To all you people that think the people in Chicago that don't want the economic disaster Olympics should be quiet, when the costs go way out of control like they always do are you willing to have your taxes raised to pay for it? No???? Didn't think so. You don't live here so shut the hell up.

comment   October 1st, 2009 6:02 pm ET

I'd love to see the 2016 games in Chicago, but most likely it will go to Rio, just for political correctness.

We never have the games in South America before. It's due for one. Just like they awarded the 2010 World Cup to South Africa just because it's in Africa.

Michael   October 1st, 2009 5:58 pm ET

What American could be against wanting the next round of summer Olympic games in America?

Tammy   October 1st, 2009 5:57 pm ET

Why are there so many comments on people's appearances? A person cannot help how s/he looks. In general, some people are prettier/handsomer than others, some are really ordinary or not nice-looking at all. But - beauty is as beauty does, and often the homely person turns out to be a beautiful person, and vice versa. As for complaining about the President - please, someone - make a chart of Bush's trips and accomplishments and vacations, with dates and locations - and post them publicly.

LacrosseMom(stuck in moderation)   October 1st, 2009 5:56 pm ET

WHY would Americans not want the Olympics in the USA????

Here are some of the benefits to our Nation:

1. Creates JOBS

2. Brings tourists, domestic & foreign. Who will also travel to some of our National Parks, etc. Most tourist who come from Europe end up spending their vacation here, which helps our economy.

3. Give our Nation a chance to befriend people from all over the world.

Its insane that the GOPers would not want the Olympics in the U.S. but then you folks are narrow minded, anyone foreign or different scares you!

George J   October 1st, 2009 5:55 pm ET

Just an example of liberals spending federal money foolishly. We are broke QUIT SPENDING STUPID.

GuyInVA   October 1st, 2009 5:53 pm ET

For Pete's sake! Somebody pony up the bribe the IOC is demanding, and get on with hosting the Olympics.

Sue B   October 1st, 2009 5:52 pm ET

I am absolutely appalled that any true American will root for Rio to get the Olympics. As a Chicagoan, I am disgusted how the rest of the US thinks of the most beautiful city in the US (and I have been to most of the major cities in the US and NOTHING compares).

I am absolutely proud to be an American first, Chicagoan second.

Chicago deserves the Olympics.

CHICAGO 2016!!

Deborah   October 1st, 2009 5:51 pm ET

Chicago is nice to look at ....miserable to get around in. Come on people. Surely you are not so stupid not to realize that this will benefit Obama's cronies in Chicago. They will make a fortune if the Olympics are held there. It is sickening to watch this debacle. And I don't believe for a second that it isn't already in the bag for Chicago. Obama's ego is much to big to really put himself out there without assurance that he will win. Just like when they finally past some form of health bill that isn't anything like he wanted in the beginning he will hail it a hugh success. He is a man that thinks he can't lose and so far he hasn't.

Jon   October 1st, 2009 5:50 pm ET

i hope chicago doesn't get it!

Lynn   October 1st, 2009 5:49 pm ET

Keep believing the haters who tell you that Vancouver LOST a BILLION DOLLARS on their Olympics.

Then, wake up and join the rest of the world, which knows that the Vancouver Olympics haven't even happened yet.

Still, I thank God that we have a wonderful President who is willing to go to bat for this country. If he goes he gets criticized and if he hadn't of gone you would have criticized. Good thing the MAJORITY OF US – the ones who voted for him love and appreciate him, anyway!

mary mtl can   October 1st, 2009 5:48 pm ET

You are lucky the infrastructure is already there,,,good luck and I hope we met in Chicago 2016

victim of republican greed   October 1st, 2009 5:48 pm ET

I really doubt that the creation of over a half million jobs for the Olympics in Chicago will be bad for the economy. We might even be able to pay back some of the money to China that Bush borrowed to have a war with Iraq.

chad   October 1st, 2009 5:47 pm ET

Anybody who doesn't want the Olympics in America are just being petty. Do you really have to go against everything Pres. Obama does? I have a feeling that if Obama cured cancer the right would say he had it for years and just kept it secret for personal gain.

How come when I critizied Bush I was told I was un-American, but it is ok to go after Obama? Either you can or you can't...I vote for can...you know the whole "Land of the Free" thing.

If Chicago does not get the 2016 Olympics, you wingnuts will be condemning Obama tomorrow, because this was so important to you.

Mark from Louisiana   October 1st, 2009 5:45 pm ET

I didn't see anything in your story about the connection between Valarie Jarrett and the property she owns near the olympic site that she will make millions on if the olympics come to chicago.

john   October 1st, 2009 5:45 pm ET

and really, its not like he is focusing a massive amount of time on this. He is gonna fly down there, make a presentation, shake some hands, fly back the same day.

Eric   October 1st, 2009 5:45 pm ET

People outside of Chicago shouldn't worry about paying for the Ulympics. Where the money comes from is none of their business.

As far as the cost of Obama's trip goes, this is no different than the weekly boondoggles that Bush made to Crawford every other week.

Get rid of the partisan bickering and rally around this as Americans. If Obama was a Republican, the Democrats would be sniping at his every move because he wasn't one of them. You can rest assured that if Dallas was in the running when Bush was in office he would have been flying there to lobby for them.

Joe B in DC   October 1st, 2009 5:43 pm ET

What Olympics

Laura in KS   October 1st, 2009 5:42 pm ET

Oh for God's sake people, he's spending 1/2 a day trying to bring honor, revenue, and jobs to our suffering country. Can you not grudge him 1/2 a day?? He's the President, not Superman. Would you be happy if he said he'll skip a few hours of sleep tonight to make up for the time he'll spend in Copenhagen? Probably not. Get over yourselves. The problems you guys keep referencing can NOT be solved overnight, and in the grand scheme of things, a few hours spend elsewhere will not make a bit of difference in the end.

victim of republican greed   October 1st, 2009 5:41 pm ET

Good to see the wingnuts rooting against America. That comes from watching the news on Fox. After all, it is not surprising to see Murdoch, a billionaire foreigner, who is supportive of China and their human rights violations, lead the charge to bring America down.

Dan in B-more, hon.   October 1st, 2009 5:33 pm ET

I'm rooting for Rio.

catmom   October 1st, 2009 5:30 pm ET

If this had been anyone other than President and Mrs. Obama people would be excited about the prospect. But instead all of a sudden the Olympics mean absolutely nothing according to those who want the country to fail. How sad the right and haters are that they would be so unpatriotic.

Wake Up   October 1st, 2009 5:29 pm ET

It's not about patriotism. This will HURT the citizens of Chicago. Jobs and land will go to Obama and Daley friends...and we will be left with debt and empty stadiums and complexes. That's the problem.

Hold them in Havana Cuba ! Si, Habana !

It would be cheaper, that's for sure. And what a novelty: Olympics in Cuba.

Chicago is the devil's sweaty armpit. Forget Chicago.

RealTimePundit   October 1st, 2009 5:22 pm ET

Chicago should not receive the bid.

They stole the idea from a neighboring city who presented it at a conference on design. I was there and I cannot believe Daley took the idea from their neighbor to the south east. This concept was much more regional in its inception and use of the lake area.

Chicago has always stolen good design. Look at the lakefront (New York planners), look at the skyscrapers (copies of NY buildings and technology), look at the Burnham Plan (Baron Von Hausen).

Go RIO!!!!!

who cares WHAT the people of Chicago want – THEY will just have to PAY for it ! Suck it up people – the O's will HAVE IT ALL ! You don't COUNT one little bit. It's all GREED – a means to the end. – in other words, – MONEY in the O's pocket. Don't you get it. It's not about the people, the voters, or even for that matter – OUR COUNTRY. In the end all the O's will profit from the next 4 years of politics and what ever else they ALL can get out of this RIDE ! Believe this. It's a FACT ! Wait and see – that is if you still can afford access to the media. The soup liones don't always have TV or magazines or (if they are still in business) the newspapers. BELIEVE this !

Albo58   October 1st, 2009 5:20 pm ET

This boondoggle should have been paid for the city of Chicago, not the American taxpayers! No American President has ever had the time or the inclination to kiss the buttocks of the corrupt IOC and that's primarily because most Presidents have placed higher priorities on other issues. Furthermore, where the Olympics is held is not nearly as important as winning Olympic events on behalf of this country!

Philip   October 1st, 2009 5:17 pm ET

meanwhile, USA unemployment is skyrocketing, generals need more troops, Iran is building a nuke arsenal, our economy is in poor shape, and OBAMA is pitching Chicago for the olympics while his cronies are moving us toward socialism .... PATHETIC!!!!!!

Simmy   October 1st, 2009 5:15 pm ET

I hope Chicago gets it just to crush the naysayers...Most of whom are oppositionists......

John Illinois   October 1st, 2009 5:14 pm ET

Most of us in Chicago do not want the economic disaster that is the Olympics. Illinois has a deficit of over $11 billion already and we cannot afford another economic disaster. They will tax everyone here to cover all the losses. Look at Athens, they lost 6-8 billion euros when they hosted the games and almost destroyed their economy. Only Los Angeles has ever made money on the Olympics because most of the venues were already built.

austinrob   October 1st, 2009 5:13 pm ET

What a dangerous city Chicago is....I don't think that shows the U.S. in the best light. So much crime and constant murders...ever watch the news on WGN? It's both frightening and embarrassing.

This whole thing is a picture of corruption. But who is surprised? The most corupt President from the most corupt city in the U.S. Impeach Obama now! 47% of us knew this was gonna happen during last election. It is only too bad we now have to wait til 2012 to get him out of office, unless we impeach him now

Tony83702   October 1st, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Since more than half the people in Chicago don't want the Olympics, I'm pulling for Rio. It's about time South America hosted the games.

Rio is lovely but crime is a monster. Street boys are being eliminated by police (guess how!) in order to curb criminality and clean up the streets.

Jim   October 1st, 2009 5:08 pm ET

I was just in Chicago......splendid time! I'm from Wisconsin and I hear about the corruption of Chicago. In Milwaukee the violence is worse.

The midsection of America needs a huge economic boost and Milwaukee may not be back on track until 2015.

I hope we win!!!!!! I hope Obama is just getting out of office when the games arrive.
GO CHICAGO!!!!!!!

Island girl   October 1st, 2009 5:03 pm ET

A friend of mine recently went to Chicago for the first time and was quite impressed. She liked the city but was awed even more by the lake beach (nothing like tempestuous East Coast Atlantic beaches with heavy surf and cold rip currents to take you to an early grave).

Go Chicago!

John   October 1st, 2009 5:02 pm ET

That's interesting about Chicago and Rio, because when the panel did the initial ratings for the four proposals, Tokyo was first, Madrid was a close second, Chicago was third by some distance, and Rio just behind that.

matty   October 1st, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Chicago is the best city in the USA. I have a feeling that most of these hicks on here complaining have never been to Chi, let alone locate it on a map.

I'd rather have Rio get it.

Better climate (Winter time around 70-80 degrees F compared to 100 degrees F and hotter in Chicago).

Emerging nation vs peaking/collapsing nation... sorry folks but common sense tells you this.

First time for a South American nation to host.

We've had it plenty of times and have dominated world affairs since Bretton Woods in 1945. Time to hand some of the reigns off to the BRIC nations.

Lynne   October 1st, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Do you think the citizens of Spain, Japan and Brazil are dissing their leaders for being there or condemning other parts of their own countries in the process?

Since when does a news media decide what is "make or break" or "political hazard"? CNN has devolved into a body that tries to MAKE news rather than a journalistic source to REPORT news. The ridiculous, partisan "interview" of Rep Grayson yesterday on Blitzer's show would have been funny on SNL but on so called news show with "best political team" it was a sad example of how far CNN has devolved into a tabloid.

Where was the same outrage at the Rep Conmgress people who spouted off on "death panels"? Where was Blitzer and Cafferty calling out Palin for her "death panel" lie and their demand that she come to the Situation Room and explain herself??

Vets4Obama   October 1st, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Why is it that this is more important than the quake victims in Somoa for both the president and his wife. Lets ask Kanye West who our current President hates...Obamessiah also never done anything for the flood victims in Georgia, but was able to find time to go to Copenhagen.

I think it;'s great that a former Olympic athlete, Michelle Obama, is making the pitch for Chicago. Her experience makes her perfect for the....what? wait...Michelle Obama wasn't an Olympic athete and she has no experience?
Oh well, a little over half of those voting in the past election voted for her husband who had no experience either so I'm sure she'll be fine.
It's good to know that since all of the other problems in our country are solved, rogue cops, NY politics, Letterman appearances, that they have time to put Chicago in the spotlight.
By the way, when will anyone else notice that piece by piece, the President seems to be paying back Chicago politics even though he denounced them during the election.

Ex- President Bush never made an effort to bring the Olympics to USA. He just fiddle while the USA burns!!

Do you all really want him to come back?

Barack Obama is doing everything that he can do for the country. George W. Bush just sit back and get drunk. One of them is a real president.

I applaud the President Obama for his efforts whether Chicago gets it or not.

Been to Rio. Lovely beaches...had someone grab my bag and try to run with it. Lots of young poor kids in the streets begging. They have a slum there that rivals my South Bronx and Southeast D.C. combined. Winding, narrow roads with sometimes cardboard shacks for houses. As for corruption.......Chicago, New Orleans and South Carolina don't stand a chance in hell. BUT....if you do the touristy things you'll love Rio, just like we LOOOOVE CHICAGO!! USA! USA!

Good luck to Chicago!!

I'd rather Omama get this country moving again with jobs and the other promises he made when running for the Presidency, this is so transparent millionairs and billionairs looking to make more money,Rio should get the nod who in their right mind would want to fo to Chicgo?not me! thanks mil

Randolph Carter   October 1st, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Funny, if you look at US cities ranking by murder rate, Chicago is 18th. The rate is lower than such bastions of red state family values as Memphis, Houston, Dallas and Baltimore. But don't let facts get in your way, neocons. Have a nice day!

Pam   October 1st, 2009 4:43 pm ET

Hey Chicago-haters – have you ever even been there? Or are you making assumptions about the city based on what you've heard in the news and in political folklore? No, it's not perfect. But it's a beautiful town, set on gorgeous Lake Michigan and populated with world-class people. It's a city worthy of an Olympic Games, and as a resident, I have my fingers crossed for exactly that outcome tomorrow.

vbabe   October 1st, 2009 4:42 pm ET

US cities just don't cut it! Philly lost the Olympics last year, most likely Chicago will loose them as well, Obama influence or not.

John in Denver   October 1st, 2009 4:41 pm ET

Why do they have to swear when describing the competition? They could've just said it was "pretty close" and that would've been fine.

Bill   October 1st, 2009 4:41 pm ET

Maybe Rev. Wright can come a pray for them all..........

Ken Williams   October 1st, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Gee I would want to have the Olympics in Chicago where two youths have been beat to near death in the last two days. Why doesn't Obama work on being the President instead of the Mayor of Chicago. Why do we have to have the Olympics in the most corrupt state in the union. Oh that's right we have one of the most corrupt presidents of all time in office.

BobAbrams   October 1st, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Patrick Ewing as...Michelle Obama?

Eddie B.   October 1st, 2009 4:39 pm ET

At the end of the day if Rio does not get the Olympics they always can say that the World Cup is coming there in 2014. That is too much for Rio in too small of a time. The Pan Am Games, World Cup, and the Olympics in one city within 10 years.

Sniffit 4 Palin 2012   October 1st, 2009 4:38 pm ET

I hope Rev Wright gets to do the prayer before the games begin.

Chris - MN   October 1st, 2009 4:37 pm ET

Hilarious to read the foaming-at-the-mouth opponents of the president posting here. Obama is apparently to blame for Blago, all violence and crime in Chicago, and Polanski. Did I fail to mention global warming? This from the people that don't even believe that it exists?

Scott L   October 1st, 2009 4:37 pm ET

Meanwhile...fill in the blank.

Emmanuel Goldstein   October 1st, 2009 4:36 pm ET

If the IOC liked Atlanta, they'll LOVE Chicago.

Putting an Olympics in this festering hole of corruption and crime (think Detroit with a few more jobs), would be a laughable decision on its merits, so it can only happen as a testament to the Eurolove for Obama. Hope he brought his kneepads because they are gonna ache from all the apologizing and supplicating he will have to do.

If Chicago gets it in 2016, (and the Congress will have to pass Porkulus 2.1 so you and I can pay for it), I predict that the US will not host another Olympiad in our lifetimes. Atlanta will look like Shangri-la compared to what Da Chicagoans will have in store for the world.

mary williams   October 1st, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Go Michelle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   October 1st, 2009 4:36 pm ET

The Olympics being held in Chi-Town will help the global economy whereas if they were held in Rio, it will just boosts Rio's and no one else's.

Chicago 2016

dixie   October 1st, 2009 4:35 pm ET

I think it is a great idea for President Obama to represent the US and Chicago in trying to bring the olmpics to our country. To the naysayers that say he has too many other things to do, PLEASE! During Bush's 8 years, he took over 500 daysof vacation. I think our president can take one day, (not even vacation) to promote an event that will bring many positives to our country! Thank you Mr. President!

Ryan   October 1st, 2009 4:34 pm ET

Wow – the Olympics in Chicago – where they beat honor students to death in the streets and you can't get a seat at a resturant.

Exactly where I'd have the next Olympics!

Dennis   October 1st, 2009 4:34 pm ET

It seems to me that Rio should get the Olympics. They've never been in South America. It's would only be 20 years since the last time US had Olympics.

nc guy   October 1st, 2009 4:33 pm ET

it's amazing people are rooting against the USA to get the olympics...way to be American...

Haas   October 1st, 2009 4:33 pm ET

I like Obama but why not let Rio have it? The Southern Hemisphere needs something to give them a boost.

However, to all of you who hate on Chicago and say the crime is bad, the crime in Rio is 10 times worse. You just don't hear about it.

Shari, NY   October 1st, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Some people may think that Chicaco with its negative stigma would not be a good site. However, one never knows what might evolve if this city got the bid – things might start turning around. Look at it that way!

I applaud the First Family for banding together to bring the Olympics to the USA. Just think of the revenue generated and employment opportunities for construction workers, accountants, hoteliers and their housekeeping staff, restauranteurs, security personnel, souvenir peddlars, etc. Also the cost of jetting U.S. Olympians to the venue would be minimized since travel would be inland, and that also goes to sports fanatics who will not need to spend lots of money on visas and air travel to go overseas.

Money will be spent on such a venture but there ar benefits to be reaped.

Eddie B.   October 1st, 2009 4:32 pm ET

Come on, baby!!!! Barack bring it home!!!! The Chicago South Side needs this desperately and the city's economy will be awesome with the job creation. Bring it home!!!

Gary   October 1st, 2009 4:31 pm ET

I would love to have it in the US and appreciate President Obama personally lobbying for it. But frankly we continue to overspend and we simply can not afford it at this time. Hosting the olympics is a honor and luxury but if you can't pay your basic bills you have to say no to this kind of extravegant luxury. Just say no.

Coe   October 1st, 2009 4:31 pm ET

You guys all realize that Rio has a crime problem that DWARFS Chicago's right?

Come up with a different reason if you're going to complain about this once in a lifetime opportunity for Chicago. Crime's a bad argument.

Madrid 2016   October 1st, 2009 4:31 pm ET

Personally I want to see Madrid win the bid. The residents of Madrid WANT the Olympics for their city. They have a rotten economy too but they have not had all the whining like the residents of Chicago has shown. Over 500,000 people turned out in support of the bid over the weekend. How has Chicago shown they want it other than sending Oprah over?

Randolph Carter   October 1st, 2009 4:31 pm ET

All of you dissing Chicago: Have you ever been there? I'm guessing your opinions of that wonderful city are based solely on the fact that our president, whom you hate so much, hails from thereabouts. I just spent my vacation in Chicago this past summer, visiting old friends, and I had a fantastic time. I lived there for 3 years and it really is a cool town. Go Sox! Have a nice day!

virginia nielsen   October 1st, 2009 4:30 pm ET

As a brazilian , born and raised in Rio, there is no way that Rio can host any world event . The city is very pretty but is extremely dangerous...Chicago is like a kids playground comparing to Rio ! Maybe in many years ahead, but not now !!! Believe me !!!

BobAbrams   October 1st, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I wonder if they will like ceate an event for the Chicago Olympics that teaches people in Chicago to stop killing eachother....good idea

Chris   October 1st, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Obama will be out of the office for less then 24 hours campaigning for the olympics and im sure the moments before and after will be booked with doing his job as presidency.

if obama did not go make his bid he would absolutely be letting our country down.

Stacie   October 1st, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Go USA! Chicago would be a wonderful place for the Olympics.

For all of you complaining about the crime in Chicago...check out the murder rate in Rio.

BobAbrams   October 1st, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Is that Michelle Obama or Patrick Ewing?

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 1st, 2009 4:29 pm ET

I see the Usual Suspects in drag here are already saying that it was a done deal and that the Olympics are already in the bag, so to speak, for Chicago. This allows them to then JUMP to the conclusion that the President is just trying to look like hero yadda yadda yadda. Pay attention folks this is the paranoid and jealous-beyond-belief GOP mind working on all 12cylinders.

JP   October 1st, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Yeah way to hope for Rio guys, I'm sure we don't need the jobs in the midwest, and the economic activity and extra security and policing wouldn't help Chicago, one of the largest cities in our country that you profess to love..
Great to see the patriotic Repubs here rooting for Rio. You guys are just the best!

DAVE   October 1st, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Go Rio, Chicago is a dirty, and violent city. I cant believe Chicago won out against other US cities to represent our country.

Eileen   October 1st, 2009 4:28 pm ET

Go Rio Go. I would never go to Chicago and help the Obamas pay back there corrupt cronies. Vote these people out and fix the mistake America made.

Ariana, VA   October 1st, 2009 4:26 pm ET

I supported pres Obama........but who cares about the Olympics!

Tom Kirchner   October 1st, 2009 4:26 pm ET

GO RIO!
There has never been an Olympics held in South America, so instead of the USA hosting the Olympics for a 7th time (3 summer & 4 winter games), I'd like to see the games held in South America for the first time.

jen   October 1st, 2009 4:25 pm ET

Hope US wins, bring it back home Mr President – let the haters keep on talking nonsense instead of looking at how many jobs will be created to save our economy...wonder if these Obama attackers even went to school to begin with as they seem to discredit anything, that he says/does! God bless POTUS!

Travis In Colorado   October 1st, 2009 4:24 pm ET

I hope that Chicago isn't chosen, what with all the crime and murders that happen there. If Chicago is chosen, Obama will gloat about this for the rest of his term, as it being the only major accomplishment to his presidency. Please, pretty please IOC, choose another city where crime is a lot lower, where the atheletes can be assured of their safety, as well as all the spectators that will tour the city. I hope and pray that the IOC keeps all of this in mind, our atheletes safety is first and foremost, and Chicago is just not the place to guarantee that.

bl   October 1st, 2009 4:24 pm ET

We all in America really appreciate the sacrifice they are making this week.
Maybe the Pres and Oprah will sacrifice and spend a few days with the troops too. No that would be hard. Maybe one day with the troops. No they are busy. Maybe they could spare one hour some time later this year for a photo op' over the Holidays.
Troops are dieing while they sacrifice for the Olympic lottery. Tough sacrifice, I am sure the Olympic committee food is not very good either.

A Democrat of 51 years who has finally got smart to their foolishness.   October 1st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

I would not want the rest of the world to see Chicago. Full of gangster, slums, gangs and violence. There is no way the rest of America can be judged by this poor uneducated run city. Please do not let it be so that we are going to be be embarrassed by the committee choosing this city. PLUS OBAMA IF YOU ARE A MAKE BELIEVE PRESIDENT (WHICH I ENSURE YOU HAVE NO CLU OF BEING) BUT IF YOU ARE PRETENDING THE PRETENCE THEN GET YOUR REAR BACK TO A JOB OF FIXING OUR NATION'S ECONOMY INSTEAD OF JUST CHICAGO. Forget your health plan and take care of our soldiers needs so as to win the conflicts they're in. Do not and I repeat do not turn and run like previous administrations have since World War II. I used to have confidence after that war that the America People could withstand any tryanny presented to them. But now after the baby boomers running the country and the aftermath of the hippy generation it is easier for them to turn and run from a situation they did not intend to participate in anyhow.

dr   October 1st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

How can we afford the projected cost of $4.8 billion while still in an economic downturn!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zoltan   October 1st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

No way, Chicago: Clean up the city, clean up the state 1st! Don't give money to this corrupt place. Remember Blagojevich or do you only have short term memory? The place is still the same.

Lou from CT   October 1st, 2009 4:23 pm ET

As much as I would love to see Chicago be the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, I think it is time to give South America a chance to showcase itself to the world. My bet is on Rio.

Glennis   October 1st, 2009 4:22 pm ET

Gotta keep all the thugs and cronies in the Chicago political sewer happy. Never mind the economy, health care, foreign affairs. I have even less respect than I had before for the Obamas, and I had very little then.

No Hillary = No Obama   October 1st, 2009 4:22 pm ET

Americans should be embarrased by this breach of fair play. The Obama's & Ms. WInfrey have overstepped their own celebrity by acting as a special interest group trying to unduly influence the Olympic committee. I wonder how the other countries feel about this shameless power play. I say give it to Brazil – no Olympic games have ever been played in South America and it's their turn.

It will be great for the country.

I don't recall this whole process of selecting the host city for the Olympics being such a big newsworthy deal in the past. You hear about it, but it isn't a real big deal. Is it only a big deal this time because Obama is involved?

Mike   October 1st, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Don't these world leaders have more important matters to tend to? Just goes to show where some people's priorities are.

" Brazilian President Lula da Silva plan to make personal appeals to the voters on behalf of their cities on Friday morning.

In a sign of just how ferocious the lobbying is, King Juan Carlos of Spain and new Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama are also making personal pitches to the IOC members."

Yet, somehow, it's completely unprecedented and unwarranted for our president to be there? Looney tunes.

J.C. - Independent   October 1st, 2009 4:02 pm ET

The first time I visited Chicago, I saw a grand city for the Olympics. I told the cab driver and he chuckled. Some day, he said. That day has come.

Chris - Seattle   October 1st, 2009 4:00 pm ET

I commend the POTUS & 1st Lady, as well as Mayor Daley & Oprah for representing America, despite the movement to prevent it and the POTUS hawks that question his every move, right, wrong or indifferent! I heard one argument that stated Chicago needs road repair, crime prevention and no additional taxes instead of the Olympics! My thought was, what city that has ever hosted the Olympics didn't need all of the above and then some! There seems to be a lot of Americans now-a-days that just don't want to agree on anything that could be construed as being beneficial for America or her cities. have we all been reduced to a bunch of whinning babies! if we win it, what are these people gonna do, boycott the Olympics!

Tom   October 1st, 2009 3:59 pm ET

While Obama and Mrs Obama and Oprah are trying to bring the Olympics to Chigao, black kids are killing each other. Way to bring change!

Leftie   October 1st, 2009 3:55 pm ET

I'm so proud of our President & First Lady for going the extra mile to get the 2016 Olymics in America! Go Team America!!!

Kat   October 1st, 2009 3:54 pm ET

Who cares? Why isn't Obama concentrating on his promise of bringing the troops home instead? Is it the attention he gets? I don't get this guy. He focuses more on just getting popularity points rather than focusing on issues. Chicago is corrupt and doesn't deserve the Olympics anyways.

not happy   October 1st, 2009 3:53 pm ET

As a person who lives 20 miles from the city of Chicago, I am not thrilled about the possiblity of the games being held here.

The taxes, the traffic, which is already a nightmare for most of us will be horrible. The folks that will be basically kicked out of their neighborhoods to make room for an "Olypmic Village" to be built , and the throngs of people are something most of us are not looking forward to.

.......gee, but they promise our taxes won't go up. Yeah, right.

Bob Kole   October 1st, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Why is it that if it was not Chicago up for the bid I don't think the Obama would be there? Who are they lobbying for the USA or their friends in Chicago?
The economic benefts are always short of expectations

Kevin in Ohio   October 1st, 2009 3:53 pm ET

As far as I am concerned, this is a no-brainer. Rio is a thousand times more desirable and workable destination than Chicago. I do not think we would be very proud to expose Chicago crime, Chicago politics, Chicago corruption, and even Chicago traffic and congestion to the rest of the world.

tia   October 1st, 2009 3:52 pm ET

You have americans dying or dead in the American Somoa's and instead you are wining and dining in Copenhagen bidding for a deal to line the pockets of your slumlord friends.

It was an outrage when then President Bush did not got to New Orleans and it is an outrage now that our current president did go to Georgia and is not going to the American Somoa's. This is AMERICAN territory at the very least!!! Georgia is STATE and only a few our DRIVE!!! Not $$$$MILLIONS in Airline 1!

Bubble of Sanity   October 1st, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Sooooo.... Just as I expected. This gets to the "politics" blog. The Olympics is not about athletics or friendly competition. It's politics. That's why it's big, bloated, and unnecessary and takes up too much of our time that could be used doing other things.

I Am the Great and Powerful Wizard of Rush   October 1st, 2009 3:50 pm ET

Go RIO go.....Obama and his cronies don't need to add further debt to Chicago.....Jarrett, a senior and very corrupt advisor to Obama, doesn't need to make millions off of this....she should take the gov't funds already received and fix the buildings, instead of pocketing the funds......now, after being on the local committee in Chicago and now that she's slithered into the White House...she's only pitching to make more money; the hell with the city.....Obama is a puppet and should be in Washington doing the job he was handed to do (via ACORN and affirmative action, I might add) These games are insignficant relative to the predicament our country's in at the hand of the liberals....

Debby   October 1st, 2009 3:48 pm ET

I was really hoping that Madrid would win. I went to Spain a few years ago and wasn't able to visit Madrid. I loved the rest of the country though, especially Barcelona and it would be nice to have a reason to visit Madrid. Although, Rio De Janeiro would be pretty awesome to see too. I'm as patriotic as anyone and would love for Chicago to win but it would be nice to have reason to travel.

Michael Hsu   October 1st, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Rio is more deserving than Chicago of the Olympic 2016 honor – due to Rio's lower crime / poverty / corruption rate. At least, the dead don't vote multiple times in Rio. Also, much less gun fatalities in Rio than chicago – which is better for the athletes.

Bill from CA   October 1st, 2009 3:41 pm ET

I am surprised Rio is considered a frontrunner, they're one of the most dangerous, polluted cities in the world, and they don't have nearly enough hotel rooms or infrastructure to handle the Olympics. Go Chicago!!!

New Yorker   October 1st, 2009 3:41 pm ET

What a joke, anyone with a brain knows Obama will have it his way; kickbacks are on the way for Chicago and the Olympic panel, also. I smell another tax hike.

If the IOC allows the Obamas to sucker punch them out of choosing Rio, a world class city on a continent that has NEVER had the Olympics, they should all be fired.

Arin   October 1st, 2009 3:40 pm ET

If you're an IOC member, how can you really vote for Rio, when you know they are hosting the World Cup in 2014? The Olympic Games would play second fiddle. Vote for Chicago!

Ohio D   October 1st, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Why don't you find me a job instead of campaigning for the Olympics???

Sgt. USMC   October 1st, 2009 3:40 pm ET

David   October 1st, 2009 3:37 pm ET

The competition for hosting the Olympics is fierce because it generates a lot of economic activity. Constructing the facilities begins almost immediately (jobs) and the infrastructure can then be used for decades.

Jay T.   October 1st, 2009 3:37 pm ET

Just another example of President Obama getting it done and, in response, the Republicans constant whining and complaining. People have to be getting sick of that, right?

liviapeacock   October 1st, 2009 3:34 pm ET

With a popular president, the US has a fighting chance. I think it's great that the president took time to go over to Copenhagen. We need all the help we can get. It a great idea to have Oprah, as well. She is the Queen of Talk Shows. She can make the rounds and put a great face on positive reasons to pick the US.

It's not all about WAR! Today, I am so very proud to be an American and will be for the next 4 years – 8 years if the rest of America is smart and can let go of the hate.

This, KIDS, is called "scratching the backs" of those who got you where you are today.

eolufemi   October 1st, 2009 3:05 pm ET

Thank goodness, President Obama is going over there. The country needs this for its morale. The country is entirely too divided and needs something positive to look forward to.

Deb   October 1st, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Let's go Olympics 2016

Jon Krieger   October 1st, 2009 2:59 pm ET

I sincerely hope that Obama falls flat on his face about this! What the hell is he doing this for, when he's supposed to be back here doing the job that most americans (not me)were dumb enough to elect him to do!

RCasson   October 1st, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Go get it President Obama! We're counting on you. YES WE CAN!!

Jeff   October 1st, 2009 2:48 pm ET

President Obama is doing payback for getting in the WH, look at who is with him on this trip, all his money people from the Chicago area. What I would like to know is; 1st What is the price tag for this trip, are all the "friends" of the President paying their own way, or are we paying for their "working trip". 2nd The last few years we had to listen to how many trips Bush made to Crawford, please report on how many "trips" Obama has been on in the last 9 months, I know they have been "work" related, taking the family out west for vacation, while we are out here lets talk Health Care, I can use that to justify this trip. The trip to Africa, taking Michelle to NY. Please do not call me a "Brown Shirt" Repubilican, I am just worried about this country.

I am sure you will not print this because i must be racist to question our President, No, I served my country and learned that the President is the Commander in Chief, whether I like it or not, he is still my President and I will always respect that office.

Video Guy   October 1st, 2009 2:45 pm ET

Chicago needs to work on there Gang problems first. After the streets are safe for kids, then consider the Olympics

2010 can't get here fast enough   October 1st, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Please, please, please, pick RIO, I don't need the world in chi-town making the Obama cronies rich and Barry becoming a billionaire because of all the kickbacks that he is going to get for cruising over to Denmark ON MY DIME and while Shelly is "sacrificing" for the children.

WHAT A JOKE that she had the "audacity" to say that.

Not that the fraud has anything more important to deal with and WHY DID SHELLY go over a day early and make Airforce one have to go all the way back to pick up Barry, what is this a taxi service and what is that CARBON FOOTPRINT for this farce going to be?

Sorry for just bringing up facts, as I am a hater and a bigot and I can't help myself.

One and done.

Slider   October 1st, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Tell us all how you are "sacrificing" yourself in Copenhagen for "your children's future" by bringing the Olympics to Chicagoland, Michelle.

LOL

If they do bring the Olympics to Chicago, they are going to have to change the five rings logo to one of handcuffs.

This country is being represented by a bunch of jive turkeys.

Cindy   October 1st, 2009 2:39 pm ET

it's down to the wire, and Obama uses his famous lay up shot... and..

Scores!

No, he misses!

But then.. the ball bounces around the hoop... and...

Pick USA   October 1st, 2009 2:39 pm ET

I hope America wins. We deserve a break today. We are in two wars and the economy is crawling back. We Need a Serious Break. Pick us IOC. Yes, you can.

Side Note: Chicago is fun. I would go there without the Olympics, good food, easy to get around, cosmopolitan...I love that city.

jaye   October 1st, 2009 2:39 pm ET

I hope Chicago gets to host the olympics.....it would be great for our country.

John   October 1st, 2009 2:37 pm ET

I have no doubt that Chicago, and the local region would benefit from being selected host to the 2016 Summer Olympics. To make Chicago ready for 2016, work would begin (years) before the opening event date. It won't change the US economy, but it would benefit the local construction, transportation, foods, and security sectors. This is good for thousands of people, and if you live there, it would be than good, it would be great news.

seebofubar   October 1st, 2009 2:36 pm ET

I live in Chicago and most Chicagoans don't want the Olympics here. The cost to the city and state would be enormous. The last 4 cities that have hosted the summer Olympics have never recouped the cost. The Olympic games are not the same as they were years ago when the games were strictly for amature athletes. These days it's more about selling advertizing and endorcements than athletic competition.

Brad   October 1st, 2009 2:36 pm ET

How completely sickening that in the wake of all the "ills" of this country our leaders, and wannabe leaders ie:Miss O, have taken flight to a foreign land lobbying to bring the Olympic games to the corrupt and BROKE city of Chicago. Can you say "community organizing?" Tell me again how much it costs every time Air Force One takes off? I'm not real sure this qualifies as official government business. Gosh, I hope Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the Obama girls got to tag along not to mention Miss Obama-in-law..............................................We truly are going to hell in a hand basket....................................................

marissa   October 1st, 2009 2:35 pm ET

I went to the University of Iowa which is 3 hours away from Chicago so I've spent my fair share of time there and have found it to be a nice city. That being said I really feel that Rio should get the 2016 Olympics. The US has had the Olympics several times where South America has not had it at all. Brazil has worked hard to bring South America up to the Olympic standards therefore they deserve it.

cjr   October 1st, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Chicago does not want the Olympics! If we get it – you can be sure that the people celebrating will be brought in – and not citizens of Chicago.! Support here is going to Rio!

Dave in Illinois   October 1st, 2009 2:32 pm ET

This is really important stuff! I can't understand why the President didn't spend his whole week there lobbying for Chicago.

He can worry about healthcare, Iran, cap and trade, Afganistan, card check, Gitmo, North Korea, the second stimulus pork bill, immigration reform and all the other minor issues later.

Truth-Bomb Thrower   October 1st, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Don't forget to pack your body armor. :-)

It doesn't matter that the city of Chicago and the state of Illnois can't afford to host. All that matters is that the Obamas are made to look good. I wonder if they are actually so delusional to think that they are still going to be in power in 2016. This is the first time that I'm actually going to be rooting against an American city.

tiff of Lithia Springs   October 1st, 2009 2:28 pm ET

We are pulling for you. We know in this economy 5000 new jobs are better than nothing.

Charlie Rangel   October 1st, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Even on matters of unofficial business, the guy is in campaign mode. Lobbying for Chicago, well, that's one thing he might know something about.

Wise Latina   October 1st, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Hmmm.... Chicago versus Rio? You're kidding me - this is even a choice? Yeah, all my life I have always wanted to travel to Chicago and see the Cubs lose, kids killing each other and a government thugocracy in action.

Let's throw away a few more billion on this debacle, whose hidden agenda is to be a tribute to Obama...!

Peggy - TX   October 1st, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Given the flack President Obama is receiving for supporting Chicago’s bid for the Olympic and the political risk many say he is taking, his efforts are heroic.

Chicago already has many of the facilities needed and excellent infrastructure suitable for such an event. If they succeeds, then it will be a boom for Chicago and highly benificial to the US.

Thank you First Ladey Michelle and President Obama for working hard and taking such political risk for the benifit of us all.

JayG   October 1st, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Why would you want to go to Chicago anyways??? Its one of the most crime ridden and politically corrupt cities in the country.

Counting the days until the Obamanation is GONE and America can prosper again   October 1st, 2009 2:25 pm ET

Have they apologized for America yet?

JayG   October 1st, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Anybody who really believes that the olympics arent already set to come to Chicago is foolish. This is so set up by Michelle Obama its not even funny. Its already going to be there. What terrible actors the Obama's are. They are trying to make themselves look like hero's when it finally does come there. How phony.

virginia nielsen   October 1st, 2009 2:24 pm ET

President Obama is a good sportsman, the right american leader to fight for and bring the 2016 Olympics to America. Great move, as always !!!

Bob in Pa   October 1st, 2009 2:22 pm ET

hmm, Rio or Chicago, thats a tough one.

Doug, New Jersey   October 1st, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Chicago is as close to hell as any place in America. The people in that city who kill and steal are as close to satin that you will find in America today. Think about the message we send our youth when they see a Chicago-land corrupt cronie get elevated to god like status in this nation. As an honest, family values, kind, thoughtful, caring person such as Sarah Palin is attacked with sexist and hateful remarks from an entire Demo-media and Democrat electorate, millions who wish her and her family harm just for having different views and showing she is better than any Democrat in the country while being humble and not needing to even speak of this fact.

Shirley In California   October 1st, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Go First Lady! Those of us who don't read or listen to the rush Bible are firmly in your corner and support you all the way! Make Americans proud to live here again.

Burns NH   October 1st, 2009 2:21 pm ET

The american taxpayer can not afford another 500 billion plus bill
that a Chicago Olympics site would require. We as a nation can't
afford the debt we currently are burdened with. We as taxpayers will
not recieve dime for what we will be liable for. "thats just the way it is".

Sian Rose   October 1st, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Considering that the First Lady is a former Healthcare executive I imagine her talents would be better used to campaign for healthcare reform instead of championing for an event that by all appearance have already been decided. This is not the 90's and she is no t Hillary Clinton. Healthcare reform is instrumental to the recovery and ongoing survival of this country's economy. The Olympics will bring billions in revenue over the next 6 to 10 years but, that's what we have a Secretary of Commerce and various others for.

Thegoodstuff   October 1st, 2009 2:18 pm ET

God bless America. I hope the President succeeds.

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 1st, 2009 2:17 pm ET

This is the ultimate 1 – 2 – 3 punch!!! GO TEAM USA!!!!! Bring home the gold, and the bucks. Bring home the Olympics in 2016!!! Thank you President Obama for your vision, Mrs. Obama for supporting your husband and being such a classy, intelligent and well-spoken First Lady. Oprah.....well, Ophra I don't watch your show but I'll thank you also for putting COUNTRY FIRST and using your world renowned reputation to assist in making the pitch. USA! USA! USA!

Doug, New Jersey   October 1st, 2009 2:16 pm ET

Blagobama chicago land cronies' mouths are watering, thinking about the insane amout of money they will be able to steal from the taxpayers if the olympics go to America's most viloent/Democrat city.

You see the kids in the streets beating people to death, the reality is they do this because they have seen the tactics used by the poltiicans in Chicago and how well it has worked for them.

Stop and think about what you support when you vote Democrat. Republicans are no saints but my god, this violent, hate-filled, selfish, crime/thugary/extortion/cheating/lying is the way to succeed message and mentality of the left is the worst our nation has ever seen.

nick   October 1st, 2009 2:15 pm ET

i am excited and nervous. haha. can not wait. however, if we failed at the very least we know that we tried as a team.

sine   October 1st, 2009 2:13 pm ET

Go Mr.President ...bring back the Gold!!
