From

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The man who ran John McCain's presidential campaign warned Friday that Sarah Palin could lead to a 'catastrophic' election result for the GOP in 2012 if the former Alaska governor captures the party's presidential nomination.

"I think that she has talents," Steve Schmidt, the former campaign manager of McCain's failed presidential bid, told CNN's John King. "But my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012, and in fact, were she the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election result."

The comments came during The Atlantic Magazine's First Draft of History Conferece, held at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

"I don't think it's inconceivable that she could be the Republican nominee for President of the United States," added Schmidt - who, among others in the McCain campaign, butted heads behind the scenes with Palin in the weeks leading up to Election Day. "I do think it's fairly inconceivable that she could be elected President of the United States."

Looking ahead to Palin's upcoming book - entitled "Going Rogue" - Schmidt predicted he would be portrayed as "anti-rogue in the running of the campaign."

Is this surprising to any clear thinking person? Palin has shown time and time again that she is not presidential material. If she were elected President, we would be the laughing stock of the world.

mary   October 2nd, 2009 12:13 pm ET

I think Palin's book is premature. I think it was purely for sensationalism, striking if you will, while the iron was hot, and there might be enough interest to actually buy the book. I think with time there would have been no interest at all, where-by a truly interesting subject never really fades.
Truly though, good books about people's lives, are written later, when accomplishments have happened, not when we quit a governorship short.
I think, in her own mind, she is something big - but then can't we all be?
Let's all write a book.

Palin will guarantee a Democratic win in 2012 !!!

Jeff   October 2nd, 2009 12:11 pm ET

This woman is one of the most dangerous people in American politics. Nothing but chaos and grief would come from her holding any office higher than what she has already held.

Frozone   October 2nd, 2009 12:10 pm ET

If Palin won she would just quit as soon as we hit the first three day weekend.

OldUncleTom   October 2nd, 2009 12:10 pm ET

A Palin candidacy could be just the crisis that the GOP needs to break their fevered reverence for hugely ignorant people once and for all. Then, perhaps, they could return to being the center-right counterbalance to the center-left Democratic party.

We will always have both the "NUKE-EM" party of the right and the "Kumbaya" party of the left, but their numbers leave them on the fringes, where they belong.

southerncousin   October 2nd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Interesting comments coming from the guy who made her stifle herself and possibly cost the election for McCain. Palin was a breath of fresh air and still is while Schmidt is an old style, like Obama and the libs.

Fenarkleman   October 2nd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

Oh, come on. America wants to see a Sarah Palin-Katherine Harris or Michele Bachmann GOP ticket in 2012. That would be so entertaining. And scary. But entertaining, nonetheless. Come on, GOP, do it for America!

bill   October 2nd, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Most anyone that has been around and seen the "real" Sarah Palin will state that she is not qualified for much of anything and will be a disaster for the Republicans if they keep pushing her on the American people.

Chas in Iowa   October 2nd, 2009 12:08 pm ET

I think it would be great if Palin were to get the nod from the GOP.

Obama could go on taking care of the nations business during the election because there would be no need to campain against her. She is so self-distructive he could win against her without campaining.

She would show her total lack of intellegence, lack of world view, inability to speak corherently to any audiance other than the Rush wingnut crowd.

Do it,
Palin 2012

sherry   October 2nd, 2009 12:07 pm ET

Sarah......you're a legend in your own mind.
It's all about the money with her........the mighty dollar.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   October 2nd, 2009 12:07 pm ET

And who would want someone who quit her elected job as Governor of Alaska only halfway into her first (and only term)? She thought the media was tough running for VP?

S Callahan   October 2nd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

You said it Schmidt...I agree.

Put her on Entertainment tonight....give her a am morning show for the Hillbillies (no offense)....anything...but Presidential asperations!

Sarah "The Marilyn Monroe of Politics" Palin's name shouldn't even be mentioned along with President of the United States; let alone as a viable candidate for the post. What is this country's fascination with this obviously unqualified person? How long is this Sarah Palin, candidate for president farce going to be allowed to continue? There should be a law against this kind of nonsense and that law should be enforced. George W. Bush was a nightmare, Sarah Palin as president would be a catastrophe. And guess what, all you Palin people's lives would be destroyed along with everybody else's.

Maureen   October 2nd, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Simply put she is a catastrophy and a dis-graceful human being!!!!

Bill   October 2nd, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Please, please nominate Sarah Palin to the Republican nomination in 2012.

A lady I talked to in Alabama said she'd vote for her because she loves children and Sarah Palin has 5 of them. An Oklahoma man adores her because she's a hunter like him. Texas, for her Pentecostal faith. A Florida couple thought she's hot and America needs glamor on the world stage. Palin is the one candidate who can absolutely secure in 2012 and beyond. For the Dems.

n   October 2nd, 2009 12:03 pm ET

please keep her out of the news

Chris   October 2nd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Actually, I hope she does win the nomination and loses in a landslide. Maybe then she'd actually go away for good. She is not good for either party and certainly not good for the country as a whole.

Emma   October 2nd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

The American voters think the same as Schmidt.

4 Palin   October 2nd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

This campaign manager is just trying to prepare people for what she MAY say about him in her book. I would say that a lot of people are really disappointed about her book sales–already number 1 in sales!!!!! GO SARAH!!!! Tell the truth about all of them–if they had handled you right and let you be yourself and give speeches–the election would have turned out different. They just didn't know how to run a campaign and the other side did.

Mary   October 2nd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Palin is a national joke and a disaster but then so was bush but he was elected. It amazes me how many Americans admire ignorance and stupidity.

Traj   October 2nd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

She is catasrophic period.... This lady is going to have her own party. Mark my words.... but you know what, that is good for errbody in the Mccain camp and all the republicans who have been lying about how ready she was to be president... You reep what you sow....

Meh   October 2nd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

All the more reason for her to run in 2012!

Kevin Denver Colorado   October 2nd, 2009 11:59 am ET

Before all the Palin supporters start crying PLEASE remember that she is asking for all of this. To tout yourself as a viable candidate when your education and world experience is so lacking shows an extraordinary breach of judgement. If you don't know how dumb you are you're extremely dangerous. Anyone with any brains realizes his or her own limitations.

Kevin, Denver

Fan of Common Sense   October 2nd, 2009 11:59 am ET

I would never vote for Sarah Palin in a primary since she abandoned her post as governor. However, I must say the more disdain and hatred the political establishment expresses of her, the more I like her.

HD   October 2nd, 2009 11:58 am ET

God, we don't even know if she's going to run for ANY office again, let alone the presidency! Let's all just quit the speculation until it actually happens.

Darren   October 2nd, 2009 11:57 am ET

Forget about Palin or any strong right wing heretical nominee. The only way GOP would have a chance is by bringing in some moderate who keeps religion out of politics and is intelligent and balanced.

This is why Obama will be successful. He is more moderate instead of polarized to one side, is a worldly man of peace and is intelligent.

Rob Johnson   October 2nd, 2009 11:57 am ET

Why do liberals hate Palin so much? They are just scared of her, and they fear that she will beat them in 2012...

Oh wait, Schmidt is a lifelong Republican. Never mind.

Gord Tolton   October 2nd, 2009 11:57 am ET

Steve Schmidt had McCain's campaign in huge trouble long before the selection of Sarah Palin. His handling of McCain was horrible – from allowing him to make speeches in front of green screens, setting up press conferences under wind chimes, in front of Harley motorbikes, and the whole mis-handling of the Joe the Plumber affair – Schmidt's campaign strategy seemed like something out of a bad sitcom.
The selection of Palin, and McCain's own force of personality and reputation, were the only galvanizing effect in the whole campaign, and responsible for as good a standing as happened. How they handled Palin was also incredibly amateurish – her best speeches went unreported, while the cliches were put out. Schmidt is now saving his own butt, when he and his crew should never be hired to ruin another campaign again.

Phil Strickland   October 2nd, 2009 11:56 am ET

Mr. Schmidt,
Somebody needed to challenge you and John McCain and your poorly run campaign. You guys lacked energy, vision, charisma, and purpose. The only good thing that can be said about the job you did was, you picked a running-mate that offered what you lacked. And then you tried to muzzle her and control her. You guys lost because of who you are, not because Mr. Obama was /is so great.
All of us conservatives who are falsely portrayed as anti woman thought she was great and would be proud to have her as president, just as we would have been proud to follow Maggie, Golda, Jeanne Kirkpatrick and a few others who are like the women in our lives. They are strong, smart, organized, and if you mess with them ... deadly. They are not self-centered like Hillary, Madoline, Madona, and Michelle.

Justen   October 2nd, 2009 11:56 am ET

al   October 2nd, 2009 11:55 am ET

Like this comes as a surprise? Palin is a disaster on her best day and a complete loser on her worst. She quit her job. She betrayed the people who elected her. What would she so as president when the going got tough, quit?

This woman is about as smart as a bag of rocks. Does anyone really think she is electable to any office. I would not vote for her to be dog catcher or street cleaner much less a position of responsibility. No one I know, well, except for a couple of die hard republicans would voter for her just because she is one, would vote for her.

Thank goodness McCain's campaign manager knew what he was dealing with. It doesn't take a degree to figure out that Palin is a loser.

Ted Tartaglia   October 2nd, 2009 11:55 am ET

Who cares?!

kelly from nyc   October 2nd, 2009 11:55 am ET

we have steve schmidt and john mccain to thank for unleashing sarah palin on us, somewhat like a virus. thanks again guys!

PK   October 2nd, 2009 11:55 am ET

CNN covers Palin like they cover Jon and Kate Plus 8... which is to say, too much and too superficially.

Kerry J   October 2nd, 2009 11:54 am ET

If she got the Republican nomination for anything, it would not reflect well on the state of the Republican party. I think Democrats would cheer her on!

DJ   October 2nd, 2009 11:54 am ET

She is perfect for the GOP base though and they love her.

Laurie in Spokane   October 2nd, 2009 11:52 am ET

If Palin were to actually BE nominated to run for President in 2012, I give up on the intellect of this country. It's one thing to nominate someone utterly new, fresh, female, but another thing entirely to nominate someone who has no inkling of the real world, its geography, issues, and is a quitter to boot. Come on people, let's nominate someone who won't be a laughing stock to the rest of the world.

Mike   October 2nd, 2009 11:52 am ET

I tend to agree with this person in that having Palen anywhere in the Republican arena in 2012 would be a BIG mistake. She brings nothing to the table.

Dave   October 2nd, 2009 11:52 am ET

Palin is an IQ test for Republicans. The ones that support her fail the test. Republicans that see better options pass. Palin makes Republicans look ignorant and sleazy. If they want to win, they need to tell her to go away as quickly as possible. But of course Democrats are praying she stays front and center.

Diane   October 2nd, 2009 11:52 am ET

Finally, someone who has ties to the GOP has the backbone to tell it like it is regarding Sara Palin. The GOP should heed his predictions.

Who put the twit in twitter? Sarah!   October 2nd, 2009 11:52 am ET

Florencer   October 2nd, 2009 11:51 am ET

Catastrophic doesn't begin to cover it.

An honest and informed viewpoint from someone who would know – Thank you, Mr. Schmidt.

Palin as President? In what respect, Charlie?

Reality   October 2nd, 2009 11:50 am ET

Seriously, does anyone, anywhere, regardless of political bent, believe she will ever get the nomination? Does anyone believe she will ever win another election? Take a step back, there is no way a majority of American will ever vote for her on any ticket. Best she can be is a spoiler, either splitting the rapture right vote so a more moderate, rational Republican would get the nod, or as a 3rd party candidate to pull the lunatic fringe vote from a legit GOP presidential candidate. She would probably pull maybe 8 to 10 percent as a 3rd party. Enough to sink the GOP for another 4 years. Now that she might be just dumb enough for.

Sniffit   October 2nd, 2009 11:50 am ET

I can say this without shame even though he's a GOPer: I agree with him 100%.

Jeff   October 2nd, 2009 11:50 am ET

Oh great, yet another opportunity for the left wing blogosphere to exercise their visceral hatred of Sarah Plain, conservatives, anyone who doesn't bow before Obama and kiss his ring and Freedom of Speech in general – what FACIST lot they ALL are!

As to Mr. Schmidt, however:

Couldn't be much worse than the bore-me-to-tears, lack luster campaign he ran. What this boils down to is the conflict of too totally conflict styles. McCains people, highly polished moderates to the core who would bend over backwards to appease and attract liberals but happily throw those in their own party under the bus. And Palin, a raw but unabashed conservative who spoke from her heart and said what precisely what she thought. McCain could barely fill a small bedroom by himself while Palin attracted tens of thousands.

Not only did Palin's style directly conflict with their own, they were also insanely jealous of her popularity and her connection to the base of the party which McCain had no clue on how to tap. She had charisma, he didn't.

Mcshame   October 2nd, 2009 11:50 am ET

Forget the Pailin running for office. In what way that she's going to be effective and steadfast? that she's a quitter. Is that how she's going to fight for the country? She's quitting on the small state of Alaska, imagine that of running the nation. Forget it....

Jim   October 2nd, 2009 11:50 am ET

i agree with him. palin is NOT presidential material.

AmFem   October 2nd, 2009 11:49 am ET

As a dedicated progressive, and as liberal as they come, I don't have a very positive opinion of the GOP.

But, I do believe that the party, as a whole, has some common sense and isn't dumb enough to make this goofball their nominee. She may run, but she won't make it to the Presidential election.

Da Wasilla Imbecilla   October 2nd, 2009 11:49 am ET

Finally, somebody in GOP land shook off the cobwebs and saw what a train wreck Palin would be. I'm sure she'll pooh-pooh, wink, and, "You betcha!" this obvious statement aside and continue on her delusional path.

Chris   October 2nd, 2009 11:49 am ET

No more catastrophic that McCain was in Nov '08. That was one the sorriest moments for the GOP, surely there were 10,000 candidates better than McCain. I like McCain as senator from Arizona, and I think he's a good fellow, but not material for president of the US.

My Two Cents   October 2nd, 2009 11:48 am ET

Schmidt is as dumb as Palin. It fun to watch these wingers eat there own.

TM   October 2nd, 2009 11:48 am ET

What ARE her skills, other than "fancy pageant walkin'", "international bionic vision" and "quitting"?

Jim Youngberg   October 2nd, 2009 11:48 am ET

Like this should come as a suprise to any rational person?? Most of us Democratic- leaning types would love to see Caribou Barbie running in 2012, preferrably with Bachmann for a running mate. That would be a great election, allowing the country to sort out the tinfoil hat wearing crazies from the ratiional people and exposing the right-wing extremists for how far removed from the mainstream they really are!

MiMi   October 2nd, 2009 11:47 am ET

Why has this guy has been doggin Sarah since she ran with McCain. He butted heads with her at every turn. As I recall, it was Sarah who drew the BIG crowds, not McCain; it was Sarah's speeches that inspired, not McCain's; and who shared our core values, yep Sarah, not McCain. Believe me, she couldn't do any worse and know any less than the current WH occupant.

Steve   October 2nd, 2009 11:47 am ET

Palin is a complete idiot. If she becomes the Republic candidate for President, God help us and the United States. Palin, Jindal, Greer, and Steele, and I could go one, are all reasons I have switched from being a Republican to becoming an independent.

The Republican party today has no leadership, their values have sunk to the bottom of the toilet and they have completely lost the confidence of the American public.

Eric Cooper   October 2nd, 2009 11:47 am ET

We're already enduring the results of a catastrophic election result compliments of you, Mr. Schmidt. If you're against Gov. Palin, then I'm for her. And you are apparently scared to death of what she's going to say about your in her #1 best-selling book! :-)

Ted   October 2nd, 2009 11:46 am ET

And Schmidt proves that McCain's choice of Palin, after just a few minutes of horrible vetting for the VP position, was bad. The GOP gave this loser Palin the ability to go on the national stage and guess what – they are stuck with this moron. The party of NO needs to get her off the stage and get credible candidates.

Obama/Biden 2012

A very smart Republican , but there are many out there that do not think when it comes to Palin ..... the extreme right thinks she is the answer because of her religious beliefs , not that she does not possess the capibilites be be a world leader.

I'm a Republican, but I wouldn't vote for Sarah Palin to be our President. No way.

Tom in FL   October 2nd, 2009 11:45 am ET

The chickens are really coming home to roost for the Republican party. After years of pandering to the most ignorant segment of the population, anyone who sounds reasonable and intelligent will be shouted down by their "base". Let's hope Schmidt is right about her not being electable.

Palinforpres   October 2nd, 2009 11:45 am ET

Please please please let Sarah be the nominee! This will further cement the downfall of the far far far right who have ruined the GOP.

RJ   October 2nd, 2009 11:45 am ET

If she is such a disaster to the McCain campaign (which he horribly ran anyway), then why, why, why, why did you let her get picked in the first place?!

I guess its because she added more to the campaign than took away. More Republicans turned out this past election to vote because of HER rather than HIM.

I don't think she should and she won't run for POTUS anytime. She's done her own damage anyway.

Sarah should listen to Steve Schmidt – he understands "catastrophic" and knows how to lose a campaign.

There's definitely a place for Miss Wazilla '82 and that would be back on her front porch keeping an eye out for rogue Russians.

Or maybe she could just pop out another kid or two or three.

It will be interesting– or not– to see if her editors went in and put the letter "g" on her present participles and gerunds in her book. It's okay Sarah– I'm just referring to those little "ing" endings you can't pronounce, nothing more sinister than that.) Is the book in large print? Must be because there can't possibly be enough content to fill more than a short pamphlet otherwise.

Wonder what this gentleman is afraid will come out in the book?
Seems like he's doing a pre-emptive attack.

Such manure from a McCainiac. Just RINO assassination work. There is no one I'd rather see as President out of the "Republican" Party, as Governor Palin, so far. No more "moderates" (a nice way to describe a cowardly lib). Maybe this year McInsane will be retired.

Mark in Omaha   October 2nd, 2009 11:41 am ET

What George Jr. did to the Country is nothing compared to what a person like Palin would do. The Country would be so divided it would take a life time to recover. FEMA should declare her a natural disaster.

I am going to get my passport renewed just in case Palin is even NOMINATED, much less elected. The thought scares me to death. The fact that we are even having this conversation is absolutely frightful, because it tells me how far toward total lunacy the right has progressed. To think that Palin (or someone of her cloth) would ever be seriously considered for high office, much less President, is an indicator of our national mental health; and it isn't well.

This man, Steve Schmidt, should be considered a hero to the cause of freedom. The fact that he worked for McCain can be forgiven.

Sarah Palin could lead to a 'catastrophic' election result for the GOP
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I believe this already happened in 2008. Now their solution is to offer us a male version of her in 2012 named Pawlenty.

J. L. W.   October 2nd, 2009 11:40 am ET

Palin has talent and can be an asset, if properly guided, to Republicans. Currently she is not presidential material. McCain ran a very bad campaign. The U.S. is at a cross roads. The country needs strong leadership. The current administration, Congress and Senate do not have it. The U.S. is facing a crises concerning the leadership of the country. Drastic changes are needed in 2010 and 2012.

Classy 57   October 2nd, 2009 11:40 am ET

He may want his opinion voiced but his running of McCain's campaign left a lot to be desired. It was probably one of the worst run campaigns in our country's history or in my life time, I should say. Shame on him for criticizing the only bump the campaign received.

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 2nd, 2009 11:39 am ET

The GOP and its' 23 followers, who hail from Florida and Mississippi, are already the laughinstock of the country. Run Palin, in full public view, as your 2012 Presidential nominee, and you will find yourselves the hated laughingstock of the world, If you haven't already accomplished that with your recent out of control insanity, and lack of priniciples.

FLINDEP   October 2nd, 2009 11:39 am ET

And along those lines, why didnt you advise Mr McCain to NOT select this whackjob as a running mate? Now we will be forever subjected to her idiocy until the end of time! Gee, thanks!

Palin Power   October 2nd, 2009 11:35 am ET

Schmidt is spouting nonsense. Palin running will guarantee a landslide victory for her and the GOP.

Bob in Pa   October 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

Maybe he is just resentful that people weren't even excited about McCain until Palin came on the scene. A lot of us conservative leaning independents fealt like we just had to vote for the lessor of two evils until she was introduced.

After that it was his campaign to lose, which he did, and now he doesn't want to accept the blame.

mike   October 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

I cannot seriously think she could make it into the Presidential race. Midway thru her presidency, she might quit. I do wish the media would quit acknowledging her presence. As for her book, she didn't even write it, so who cares.

BG   October 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

I don't know what this guy is complaining about. THEY chose Sarah Palin to be John's running mate. Don't hate because she is more popular than he was. And if that guy was such a good campaign manager, why did John McCain's campaign fail horribly? I am a democrat but I just had to make a comment. I don't want to see Sarah Palin as president but I have to give her some credit. You guys put her out front to help your cause. Little did you know she was going to steal the show. It wasn't going to be disasterous to you if she had won the vice presidency (who could potentially be the president one day) so why is it so bad if she wants to run for president now?

Joe E.   October 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

The pragmatist speaks.

Steve! Shhhh! We progressives really want Sara to be nominated, so that the current defacto Republican Party (i.e. the vitriolic, patently crazy zealots that populated the town hall meetings and the tea bag forums, and the evangelical "Christians" (NOT!), and the corporate robber-barons) can finally go extinct as an organized political unit. The moderate Republicans can then return under a different name, and sanity will then return! Yay!

Tom Denver   October 2nd, 2009 11:34 am ET

Anymore "CLOSED DOOR" speeches?

Marie Dixon   October 2nd, 2009 11:33 am ET

I have to agree with Schmidt. Although I like her personally, Gov Palin has been tainted by the media and cannot become president (or vice-president) - perhaps a senator from Alaska.

too bad republicans only want failure   October 2nd, 2009 11:33 am ET

I am wondering just what "talents" this looney tune has!

Lisa in Shelton   October 2nd, 2009 11:33 am ET

I think it would have been better to title her book "going rouge" after all that lipstick flap. Nothing would be better for the Dems than if she's on the 2012 ticket #1or #2 position. Let's see if the Faux news can get that ball rolling.

yougottabekidding   October 2nd, 2009 11:33 am ET

The Dems should run a campaign to ensure that Sarah Palin becomes the GOP Nominee for 2012! They could feature her in back-to-school ads. for adults. This is what happens to you if you do not stay in school.

Amir Goy   October 2nd, 2009 11:32 am ET

You'd have thought such a conclusion would have been all too obvious before the LAST election!

beth   October 2nd, 2009 11:32 am ET

As he said..."she has talents" ....like playing the flute and she does well in the swimsuit competition. Please don't let her run our country. I'm sure there are other attractive women who will say 'Lord, Lord' and actually mean it and are INTELLIGENT who would be better candidates.

Todd   October 2nd, 2009 11:31 am ET

The librarian certainly does have talents. None of them relevant to governance. Or intellect. Or sanity. Or knowledge of world affairs. She won't get the nomination, but she will be funny to watch for a few weeks in 20012. . Until then, could she just go away?

Of course, any of the folks who look like contenders today will be just as funny. But 2012 is a real long way off in political years. Maybe there is still a viable repiblicon hiding somewhere in the vast expanse of American political life. Of course if he/she is viable and sane he/she probably switched party affiliation a few years back.....

yougottabekidding   October 2nd, 2009 11:31 am ET

The GOP should elect Sarah Palin as their nominee. This would ensure another Obama landslide victory! The only people that would vote for her are the right wing extremist, that she loves to fire up with her poisonous rhetoric.

PULEEEZZZ!! lets tell some truth   October 2nd, 2009 11:30 am ET

RUN SARAH RUN!! please .. UNITE all the right wing-nuts, and haters, screwballs and anti americains passing themselves of as great patriots, fighting for a white America, even though the majority of Americains chose something else to lead them out of the mess your party created! RUN Sarah RUN!..

Bubble of Sanity   October 2nd, 2009 11:30 am ET

Actually, McCain and his staff were "catastrophic." They went in knowing they had lost. For the life of me, I still cannot understand why McCain even ran for president. He knew he was going to lose from the "git-go" and even conceded several key states, such as Michigan, where he didn't even try.

Palin gave the McCain campaign the only bright and interesting moments to an otherwise boring, lackluster campaign of losers.

Monster Zero   October 2nd, 2009 11:29 am ET

The GOP (Greedy Ol' People) will crumble, regardless of Palin's nomination.

Elana, Melbourne Florida   October 2nd, 2009 11:29 am ET

Thank you for speaking the truth. i honestly do not understand how some highly educated, intellegent people think she has what it atkes to be a world leader. I'm not trying to be combative- i genuinely do not understand...

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 2nd, 2009 11:29 am ET

Catastrophic?? That would be putting it mildly. Words like: tsunami-like effects, world-wide economic and socio-political disaster. And of course, the mere temerity of trying to shove her down our collective throats as a presidential nominee would result in mass hysteria, the laughing and clinical type!!

TLDSR   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

The Republican Party is a disgrace and abomination. There is something putrid about these guys and gails. The Republican parties of past decades did not make me want to shower after I hear or see them speak on issues. I think it started with the Newt Gingrich Crew.

EC   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Sarah Palin is CASTASTROPIC!!!!

Her books are being bought by the RIGHT WING groups in bulk. They will be handed out FREELY at right wing events or at a BIG discounted price.

Americans are not stupid enough to spend their HARD EARNED dollars on a book written by a woman who attended 5 colleges to get a marginalized journalist degree and still remains ignorant in the proper use of the English Language, written or spoken.

former republican   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

come on let her run...it would be great, she would single handedly ruin it for the extreme right wingers which is why most of us left the party in the first place. as an independent voter i would love to see her lose!

Bob in Pa   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Obviously Steve Schmidt is another Sarah hater. Why is it these people always think that they are so enlitened that they think they know better that the people. We need a double dose of good ole common sense injected into American politics and we certainly aren't going to get that from our current pool of active politicians.

alpha_nu_916   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

intellectual republicans realize that gov. palin is woefully underqualified for the presidency – being president requires more than "executive branch" experierence, so enough with obama was a community organizer.
it requires a fundamental understanding iof our constitution, international affairs & relations, and global economics; gov. palin displayed her lack of all three on a regular basis during the 08' campaign.
but if the crusty, christian conservatives still nominate palin as the gop nominee, buyer beware . . .

Seth in Jacksonville, FL   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Please America – let her be the nominee....PLEASE!

Mary   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Jealous much Steve???? Are you a little nervous Steve?? It is all coming through!!! LOL

Take a deep breath Steve – nobody cares about you!!! You are toast!!!

Barbara Gwin   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

I absolutely think that if Sarah Palin won the republican nomination for president it would energize democrats and independents like nothing else. On the far right Sarah Palin's supporters have a definite blind spot when it comes to the abilities of Mrs. Palin, but democrats, and independents too, can see very clearly the deficits she brings to the table. I believe her inadequacies inspire fear in the minds of many rational people. I, for one, could not get to the polls fast enough to cast my vote against this women. Any president confronting the issues that Obama has had to face is doomed to merciless criticism, but the appearance of a Sarah Palin in the 2012 election would inspire many votes against her, it would give those democrats and independents, who may be disheartened by Obama's performance, the inspiration they need to get up off the couch and make it to the polls.

Olive   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Palin's book-title should be - GOIN Rogue – An American LIAR... verses "Going Rogue – An American Life"

LouAz   October 2nd, 2009 11:28 am ET

Never thought I would hear a current day Flat Earth Republican make any sense. Of course no one will listen to him. He is telling the truth !

Steve in Vegas   October 2nd, 2009 11:27 am ET

So let's see... the McCain team picks her as the running mate, and then completely trashes her during the campaign (behind the scene), sets her up to fail, blames her for McCains loss, and now continues to attack her... who looks like the fool now?

Julie   October 2nd, 2009 11:27 am ET

The only people who believe Palin has a snowball's chance are the minority that follow her on Facebook. Truth is, she couldn't carry the ticket to a win in 2008 and it would be the same in 2012. She's just not that smart.

Larry - Hazleton, pa   October 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

It is refreshing to hear someone speak candidly about Sarah Palin – Yes she is attractive – speaks well – but she is a complets airhead when it comes to having an understanding of the issues that the President of this country must deal with – I don't that she will even read her own book. But, for purely selfish reasons let the republicans have her – she is the only person on the planet that I would not welcome as a democrat.

Peter (CA)   October 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

Exactly.

So, Republicans, PLEASE nominate Sarah Palin.

Island girl   October 2nd, 2009 11:26 am ET

Why all the buzz about Palin these days. Is she warming up in the bull pen readying herself for a comeback? It sure seems so.

She proved in the last election she is catastrophic. Please, do not discourage her from running.

Chris ~ Albany, NY   October 2nd, 2009 11:25 am ET

I'd LOVE it if the republicans voted her as their presidential nominee in 2012. She'd have support from her base, which is only about 30-35% of the country, and no one else!

Glad to see some Republicans finally admit the obvious.

Scott, Tucson   October 2nd, 2009 11:24 am ET

I would imagine that any candidate running against Obama in 2012 stands an excellent chance of winning. I'm waiting for Hillary to throw her hat back into the presidential ring and start slamming Obama's lack of real leadership, any debates between those two should be interesting.

cell   October 2nd, 2009 11:24 am ET

Sure, conceivably she could be a canidate for the Republicans. THis is about all they have. WHICH is so telling, when Palin is the best you got. The Republican party always shows their true intelligience.. Go ahead put her on for 2012. Would love to see this complete catastrophe play out.

Chris   October 2nd, 2009 11:24 am ET

This would be great counsel if it weren't coming from a loser.

Maybe this guy needs to figure that what "was" catastrophic to the Republicans is that they lost, and he led the way.

Schmidt the Clown   October 2nd, 2009 11:24 am ET

Schmidt is the clown who sabotaged the McCain-Palin ticket. He is throwing out mud before Palin's book comes out because he knows he is going to get the dirt he deserves thrown on him

Schmidt's actions during the campaign will likely result in him never managing another national campaign. He let his personal feelings for Palin get in the way of his responsibilities and loyalty to the campaign, and he injured his client, John McCain, in the process.

Schmidt is a clown.

Reformed Republican   October 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Falin' Palin is in fact an embarassment to her party, her state, and this country. Betcha' she quits – any takers?

Hey rethugs, some advise – dump this airhead PRONTO...

Brian   October 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Sounds like pre-emptive damage control to me! This guy is a loser and his opinion doesn't matter. McCain's campaign was one of the worst run political campaigns in history. Sarah Palin's book wll most likely expose this turd for what he really is!

lou   October 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Only an idiot would think this woman is qualified to be president. And we know there are NO idiots in this great country.

Kathy   October 2nd, 2009 11:23 am ET

Catastropic for the GOP a dream come true for the Dems. The thought that she even has a chance to win the nomination just shows how out of touch the GOP continues to be.

David H   October 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

This would be hysterically funny, if it weren't so pathetic! This guy is totally clueless. He ran one of the worst Presidential campaigns in modern American history (Dukakis 1988 probably wins the prize), a moribund, awful, one foot in the grave, very painful plod, and now he has the chutzpah to say that Palin would be a catastrophe! McCain lost miserably, by almost 10 million votes, to a left wing, radical, neo-communist, Chicago thug and community organizer, and probably he still has no idea as to why! I dare say the overwhelming majority of the votes McCain actually did manage to get were because of Palin being on that ticket. One can only hope that Mr Mooney is currently one of the 9.8% of the American public without a job today.

Bill Hewett   October 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

For once a REPUBLICAN who sees the light at the end of the tunnell. Palin is a loser. However the GOP will see that she become a millionaire so the party can get some bid bucks from her because they will lead her to the watering hole but in the end they will not allow her to drink. She will be history-finally-good ridance.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   October 2nd, 2009 11:22 am ET

Mr. Schmidt is EXACTLY right. Eventually someone is going to have to tell the GOP base that no, Sarah Palin cannot be the presidential nominee. I'd hate to be the poor sap that has to deliver this bit of news to the volatile GOP base.

No huge fan of Palin at this address, but this guy will become the new star in the anti-Palin media culture and will be on every show, getting paid and hammering her as the campaign failed and they need a scapegoat and the only way this coward makes any money is too hammer her.

Steve buddy, newsflash, THE CAMPAIGN WAS DEAD UNTIL she came aboard, the thing you should be looking at for the real truth is the mirror.

YOU ran a lousy campaign (albeit with 90 percent of the media on the other losers team your hands were tied), but you still missed chance after chance to speak your vision and go after the community organizer at the same time.

The newest darling of Chrissy and Keith, Steve Schmidt and Steve, please have NOTHING TO DO WITH ROMNEY, please sit 2012 out.

The thought of a Idiot like Palin being president, sends shivers up my spine. It would be hard to find a dumber, less qualified person than that fool.

The only people dumber that Palin, are the people fooled by her.

Gobsmacked   October 2nd, 2009 11:20 am ET

Ya think?! "Anti-rogue" portrayal? Anyone in his or her right mind would be. I just can't get over the fact that McCain and his handlers loosed this person on the lower 48. The sooner she rides off into the sunset for good, the better off we'll all be.

Rob   October 2nd, 2009 11:18 am ET

Seeing this clown say negatives about Palin is like seeing last year's Detroit Lions coach criticizing the Patriots. McLame's campaign was a joke, and had not Palin drawn 60,000 per appearance, he'd have lost by 15%. McLAME is the word.

steve olsen   October 2nd, 2009 11:18 am ET

She would be a great candidate if she hadn't quit her job as Governor of Alaska. America doesn't want a quitter

Andrew   October 2nd, 2009 11:18 am ET

Would losing the presidency, the House and a filibuster proof Senate to the Democrats be a "catastrophic election result"? Mr. Schmidt, you and your candidate achieved just that. Frankly, your judgment here shouldn't be news.

Dick_NH   October 2nd, 2009 11:17 am ET

Catastrophic? You betcha!

Carl Justus   October 2nd, 2009 11:16 am ET

If Sarah Palin is the best that the republicans can elect in a primary election, then the republicans will become like the whigs, in the past.

The republicans must have someone that knows more than tax cuts, borrow and spend and their name.

The last three republicans presidents have increased the national debt by 9,5 TRILLION DOLLARS. The republicans would rather let the sons and daughters of the middle class Americans have to deal with the bread lines that are sure to come and the begging for a job to make a few cents an hour to try to buy a loaf of bread so they do not starve to death, which is not out of the question if we do not increase taxes to pay as we go instead of leaving massive debt for the future.

Phil   October 2nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

To "pick on" Palin's gross ignorance, grammactical problems and lack of over all intellectual "chutzpah" has become an easy proposition to discuss and exploit. The fact that she "appeals" to a small but sizable "class" of Americans bodes poorly not only for the Republican party but for the nation in general at a time that other economic powers, both friend and potential foe, are running circles around us both in terms of academic excellence and industrial ingenuity.

Michael in Houston   October 2nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

sarah palin is already "catastrophic" which is exactly why she will be the republican nominee. She personifies anger, ignorance, and zero political skills all of which plays to the base. The republican party under Reagan and Bush Senior would find her laughable like the rest of us but thats not who the republican party is now. The republican party of little Bush, Rush, Coulter, Hannity etc loves her

Dee, 1 Vote   October 2nd, 2009 11:15 am ET

Steve, are you mad that she did beat you and McCain in "08"? My vote is Obama in 2012!

Expat American   October 2nd, 2009 11:14 am ET

I hope that the GOP nominates Palin to be their presidential nominee in 2012. Given her lack of global perspective and intelligence herein lies a golden opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

1.) To defeat the 1950s-era GOP Party of obstruction and racial purity
2.) Offer the world another look into the real isolationist, bigoted and racist face of Conservatism in America

So let Palin sell some books to the dollar store trailer crowd, and hand out a few free t-shirts and hotdogs at her Klan rallies; I hope she runs for President in 2012.

Kathleen   October 2nd, 2009 11:14 am ET

Palin is catastrostrophically stupid along with the rest of the GOP. It's not going to matter who runs in 2012, there is no way a Republican can win.

Charles   October 2nd, 2009 11:13 am ET

He thinks 2012 would be "catastrophic"? What the hell does he think happened in 2008 when Mr. Schmidt was the brain running the show. Why in the world would anyone car about what his "honest view" is on a winning presidential candidate? Having this guy pontificate about what constitiutes a winner campaign is like the Detroit Lions lecturing the Steelers or Patriots on how to win a Super Bowl!

Kat   October 2nd, 2009 11:11 am ET

This isn't "blasting" Palin. I believe it would be bad if she won the nominatin too, but simply because the media would be relentless on her just like in the past election. And yes, this would not result in a win for the GOP which is why it would be catastrophic, especially if Obama won again. She would definitely make a better president than our current one.

Annie   October 2nd, 2009 11:11 am ET

Bring her on – let her run – and secure Obama's second term with utmost certainty!

Randy, San Francisco   October 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

Nolanmar   October 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

as a moderate Dem, I can only hope!

bj   October 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

Of course Sarah will blame him for the campaign loss. She has yet to admit that she was a liability. She blamed Charlie and Katie and anyone else who tried to find out just what Sarah was all about.

What did we find out? She doesn't read anything, she doesn't know what the VP duties are, and she can see Russia from her house! And she blames everything on the media. When her book bombs, is she going to blame the media again?

Jackie in Dallas   October 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

OK, dude. Were you involved with her selection as a VP candidate? If not, then you have some room to talk. And what's more, you are spot on with your analysis.

However, if you were one of the ones that picked her in the first place, you should admit your error before you start any other conversation.

Ms Palin does have some talents. Do I think that they have anything to do with running a successful campaign, and being President? No. Just no. And Schmidt should know.

Am I scared of her? Not at all. She does quite well enough on her own destroying her own credibility - she doesn't need any campaign against her. Just wind her up and let her go on her own.

Georgia   October 2nd, 2009 11:10 am ET

Sarah Palin does not have the qualification to lead a PTA, so why does she feels that she can lead the U.S. of America as president. We just suffered through one President with barely a C average in undergraduate school, now another one who barely graduated from college in 5 years wants to run the country.

Sarah Palin is an excellent example of the reason why America's education is not up to par with many of the other countries. Let's see, it took her 5 years to complete an undergraduate degree, from a mediocre college. Her daughter completed her education by getting a GED. So we know that education is not a top priority for the Palin's family.

Americans do not have to worry about foreign terrorist destroying this country, because ignorance will do the job for them.

SSHHHHH!!!!

We know the longer the woman is in the spotlight, the better it is for democrats in 2012. But don't tell republicans!!

Minnesotan   October 2nd, 2009 11:09 am ET

Palin / Pawlenty 2012! Two great failures that fail great together!

sv   October 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

Stevie boy, Palin or not...2012 will be catastrophic for repubs anyway

Bryan   October 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

Schmidt is a flunkie who has obviously always thought he is considerably more important than he really is. I don't think he actually ever got it that Palin was the candidate, and not the other way around.

Geoman   October 2nd, 2009 11:08 am ET

I totally agree with Schmidt. She has no chance. I can just see it now. And Palin's running mate for 2012 drum roll. It's Joe the Plumber. Vote for "PP" for 2012.

Death Panel Sarah   October 2nd, 2009 11:07 am ET

kenn paul   October 2nd, 2009 11:07 am ET

This from the guy who ran the most inept Republican presidential campaign in recent memory? Gimmie a break! Sarah Palin may have her negatives, but the people who ran John McCain's campaign – and the candidate himself – were an incompetent mess.

NVa Native   October 2nd, 2009 11:07 am ET

If she represents the true political identity of the Repubs (which most believe she does, excluding the Beck, O'Reilly, and Limballs) , then she should be the nominee.
And I'm sure most Dems pray for this insanity of the Repub party to continue way past 2012.
Canibalism replacing their fascism?

Sara Shapiro   October 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

Sarah Palin is a disgrace.

proud conservative   October 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

The unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent in September as employers cut far more jobs than expected, evidence that the longest recession since the 1930s is still inflicting widespread pain.

The official jobless rate stopped short of topping 10 percent only because the Labor Department doesn't count people who have given up looking for work or settled for part-time jobs.

More than a half-million unemployed people gave up looking for work last month. If laid-off workers who have settled for part-time work or have given up looking for new jobs are included, the unemployment rate rose to 17 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994.

William   October 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

Unless I have missed something, it would seem to me that both John MCcains and Steve Schmidts leadership led to the same results in 2008 that he is saying Sarah Palins leadership will in 2012. What the Republican part doesn't get is the same, tired old stratagies no longer work, no matter who is leading!!! Wake up. Your message stinks.

Joel Miller   October 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

Schmidt is right and the Republican leadership certainly knows this too, although they'll want to keep Palin's base in tact. In any case, it will take the Republicans at least 3 years to figure out what they're about unless of course the Obama Administration crashes and burns in some surprise crisis. Once the dust settles from his first year, though, I think Obama will ride tall in the saddle, the economy will recover and he'll likely be reelected despite the wetest of Republican dreams.

Mariann Pepitone   October 2nd, 2009 11:06 am ET

This man needs to get a grip. Instead if degrading her he should be uprising her. He is not helping the republican party but maybe in saying what he said against Palin will help her with the public. It certainly helped Obama win and he is not the best of decision makers. She couldn't do any worse than what he is doing to this country.

Alan   October 2nd, 2009 11:05 am ET

I'm praying daily that Palin never becomes President of the United States. That would be a catastrophe this country could not possibly withstand. She QUIT as governor for a "higher calling" and now we know what that "higer calling" was - huge profits from a book deal.

Sorry, Charlie (and Sarah). We've had way too much of that the eight years preceding President Obama. The nation is awake now. Palin did wake them up because she's such a total cartoon of what the GOP has become.

Let's just hope she's nominated, fails miserably again (just as she helped McCain's campaign fail miserably) and it's catastrophic for the GOP.

IF she's nominated it will prove to me the GOP has NO new ideas and honestly believes if you keep doing the same things over and over and over again you will get a better result. The definition of INSANITY.

John T. Anderson, Olean, NY   October 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

No one should ever again take seriously the opinions of Steve Schmidt and the other bozos who ran the McCain campaign into the ground. Palin may have shortcomings, but I certainly won't take the word of any of them for it, and I'm a conservative Republican.

Against Idiot Republicans   October 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

Never go against the family in public Steve – Cardinal rule #1 in politics. This is why the GOP will never win the White House – they cannot keep from barking at each other all year long. Mr Schmidt ought to be taken to the woodshed by Steele and told to shut up.

joe   October 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

I can only deduce that Sarah Palin represents the kind of simplistic, aggressive, talentless savior often picked by the desperate, angry, fearful, uneducated, racist portion of the population that can't accept responsibility for their problems nor foresee a future in which they themselves will have to do the work of shedding their ignorance and helplessness.

Mariann Pepitone   October 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

I believe he is wrong about Palin. She is a very smart woman and accomplished her goals at an early age not like most woman or young man who graduate from college and cannot never get as far as she did. Plus there is a lot of jealousy within this generation of today over Palin. This man apparently fears that Palin would win over who he has in mind as the main candidate for the republican presidential election. Her book will have a sell out and she has time to learn more about foreign policy. After all, Obama had to learn from Clinton's administration that's why he chose them. She would do better with world leaders than Obama and I believe she would end the war. He is keeping the war goling and now started with Afgan.

arapikos   October 2nd, 2009 11:02 am ET

It is a free country–let's not forget that after all is said and done. If she thinks she has a chance to become the leader of our great nation, then so be it. Everyone deserves the chance to become the President of the United States. Sarah is not exception to that right.

bruce amann   October 2nd, 2009 11:01 am ET

Steve Schmidt had to run the absolute worst Presidential campaign in history. I'd be shocked if he manages another campaign again.

;)

Scott   October 2nd, 2009 11:01 am ET

I agree; I think she has talents, too. It is just that none of those talents involve intelligence, expertise or thought.

susanj   October 2nd, 2009 11:00 am ET

She has talents! What talents, lying, being hateful? She's good at that. Let's not forget the death panels she created in her own mind – if she has a mind – which i doubt. She is a complete idiot.

sarah for president

johnrj08   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

Catastrophic? Surely there's a more appropriate word, such as hilarious, or absurd. The idea that a person with Sarah Palin's intellectual capacity might be the GOP nominee for president in 2012 trivializes that office and would spell the end of the Republican Party as a meaningful movement in American politics.

Sadly, the are enough anti-intellectual, religious fundamentalists to give a Palin a real shot. We wonder why people like Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez get any votes in their countries, when all we have to do is look at our own state of political affairs to see why. A large percentage of humanity hasn't evolved beyond Neanderthal and, if it wasn't for a few smart ones, we would still be trying to discover fire.

Carmela, Longwood, Florida   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

The woman is a joke, a bad one at that, and she will go down by the same book that will make her rich.

Emma   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

This guy should know about catastrophic elections...he ran one of the worst campaigns in recent history and his candidate was run over in the election. I wouldn't really consider his opinion to be worth much of anything.

Kim   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

The country just needs to forget about Palin – Ignore her constant incoherent yak yak yak. If the republicans nominate her to run for the presidency in 2012, that will just prove they've all lost their minds. The Republican party needs to turn the lights off and go home – PERIOD

GP   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

Palin would not just be catastrophic for the GOP, she would be catastrophic for the US.

"Now see, there goes Iran again, tellin' lies about their nuculear ambitions. You know the difference between a hockey mom and president of the USA? President has the doomsday code."

Honestly though, how can a former member of the AIP, and as governor endorsed their movement, even be considered a viable candidate for ANY federally elected position? She was a proponent of Alaska seceding from the union.

How she reconciles this conflict of interest would require a slight of hand that she has thus far demonstrated to be beyond her ability.

But for the 20 percenters, she is just what they want.

russell   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

This is one of the best and most truthful articles that CNN has done , at least someone out there in the republican party is being honest with themselves and their party , there's no way Palin could win the ofiice of POTUS in 2012 , and I know for a fact that you have a lot of white Americans' actually think that she would be good for our country , if you think Bush was bad for the country , what do you think this quitter is , need I remind a lot of folks that this woman is a quitter pure and simple , when the tough gets going Palin gets the hell out of the way, she can handle politics at a national level , so people of America if you want our country to continue to go in the right direction , your best bet is not to BET on this loser .

fellow from chicago   October 2nd, 2009 10:58 am ET

Agreed, I adore this woman but if she ran I'm afraid there would be Bob Dole like results or even worse; McGovern like stats from the '72 election. Sarah, stay in the party, work for the party, but please don't run as the GOP Presidential candidate!

Larry   October 2nd, 2009 10:57 am ET

If there are people in the Republican party that would actually consider Sarah Palin as a presidential candidate, then the Republican party is in even sadder shape than I thought

But these days the Republicans are so twisted up in their own underwear, I don't think they have a real clue as to whats really going on out here in the country

Also if they were to actually try to "use her again" as a GOP pawn, it would simple prove once again just how little they respect the intelligence of the American people

We are on to you boy's, no more hiding behind your lies and twisted truths

THE PARTY OF NO ... sense, or morals, or concern for anything but themselves

Tim in Minnesota   October 2nd, 2009 10:57 am ET

With all of the goofy things that she has said and done since she came on the Republican stage, I believe that we'd see Hugo Chavez riding on a Brahma bull naked down Broadway before she'd become President,

Bill B. Nancy,KY   October 2nd, 2009 10:57 am ET

At least there is one honest Republican in the world. My hat is off to you Steve Schmidt.

Isn't it obvious to America that Palin is completely nuts! I don't and can't understand who in their right mind would want to follow this crazy lunatic!!!

John   October 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

After the results of the last election I find it inconceivable that the republican party could consider Palin a viable candidate. I have no doubt she cost John McCain some votes, most decidedly mine. The moose hunting hockey mom pitt bull disguised with lipstick has not impressed on this independent voter that she has what it takes to run this nation. It takes more than folksy language? You betcha!

Bubba   October 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

"Going Rouge" is a GREAT title for a book about a pig in lipstick. But will anyone kiss this pig? Especially after she calls old grampaw McCain a bunch of names?

GI Joe   October 2nd, 2009 10:56 am ET

The Iquitarod Queen will get ONLY the far right-wing nutjobs' votes.

Most Americans are too smart to be fooled by any person that runs on only one or two issus without even considering human beings of all sorts live and work in this country.

funny what strange things weirdly envious people will say about the extreemely qualified, isn't it ?

Mike   October 2nd, 2009 10:55 am ET

The woman is everything that is wrong with politics in this country. Someone who seeks advantage for the sake of profit. If she had devoted one half of the time to learning things a president has to know instead of getting jobs she is not qualified for, she would be an asset to the country. Unfortunately, she is the worst of the worst. I hope she gets elected, so we can learn first hand (through spokesmen) what she thinks because she will never give any interviews.

Jim K.   October 2nd, 2009 10:55 am ET

It's nice to see a Republican thinking clearly and making sense, for a change.

Donald from PA   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

What is his beef with Palin? He strikes me as someone who doesn't like women... probably bitter because as a bald guy he can't really pull any.

chubby   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Mccain's campaign was run by a total idiot and I was wondering who the stooge was and now we have a face to go with the name. He screwed up the campaign and now wants to blame Sarah Palin. I am sure the lily livered liberal bed wetters will love this article but it is to no avail. Just check out the book sales for Sarah and you might just get the point. Anyone would be better than the clown currently in the White House.

Hannah   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

The republican party has shifted so far to the right that mainstream, middle of the road people can't abide by their ideologies. And they repeatedly lie to the American people. When bush was running he said that he was not for nation building and war, that he didn't abide by big government and look what happened; two illegal wars, government grew 12% as cheney and bush spent through the Clinton surplus.I don't think it matters who is running, they can't win. I think most people have gotten smarter in the last decade.

Laura S.   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Anyone who honestly believes Palin would be a good candidate for president is EXACTLY the reason why our government is so screwed up. She couldn't even handle the pressure of being governor of Alaska and quit. Can you imagine her implosion if she ran for president? People in America are sick if they believe she is an acceptable option.

Brian   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Diana   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Leftie   October 2nd, 2009 10:54 am ET

Oh, that would be such a rouge-y, maverick-y thing for her to do, wouldn't it??!! C'mon, Sarah . . . .run, run, run, run!!

See neo-cons . . . we don't hate her and we're certainly not afraid of her. We WANT her to run so that the Republican party can be in total ruin . . . maybe forever!

Sheila Baker   October 2nd, 2009 10:53 am ET

I agree with this. Palin might make a great cabinet member
but she is a long way from Presidential material. McCain
had a chance in 2008 with a running mate such as
Romney, a team able to pull away the moderates from
the Dems. If Romney makes it in 2012, he needs to seriously
consider Palin's baggage.

Al-NY,NY   October 2nd, 2009 10:51 am ET

This guy has it down perfectly. She would guarantee a landslide victory for ANY Democrat. With that said...PLEASE RUN SARAH. PLEASE RUN AND WIN. GET THOSE SHEEP MOBILIZED.

Billy   October 2nd, 2009 10:50 am ET

Whether you love Obama or hate him, everyone has to agree that the surest, easiest way to re-elect President Obama is by having Palin as the Republican nominee.

I would LOVE to see Palin as the nominee! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE nominate her!

mjm   October 2nd, 2009 10:50 am ET

I'm sorry but McCain LOST that election. Not Palin.

NOBODY wanted McCain. The only reason it was close was because of Palin.

How do I know? Just look at how many negative posts there are about Palin. When the other side hates you it's because you’re good at what you do.

Grahame   October 2nd, 2009 10:49 am ET

Oh and this is a surprise? Please Please nominate Queen Sarah for supreme head of the universe. Seriously folks please stop, my sides are hurting from laughing so much. On second thought though, please continue because this fool is the only source of humor in the Republican Party.

A very interesting opinion by someone who is in the know. I respect the fact that he is not going by the party talking points, but delivering an honest opinion absent of harsh tones and rhetoric.

Henry Miller, Libertarian, Cary, North Carolina   October 2nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

So far as I can tell, the "silent majority" of Americans are as as tired of the extreme Left as they are of the extreme Right. The Presidential winner of 2012 will the one closest to the centre–and that includes neither Palin nor Obama. If that's the choice we're offered by the "major" parties, the odds go up a lot for a third party candidate to break the duopoly of American political power.

Sick of Palin!!!   October 2nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

Sarah Palin is not a VP nominee anymore, she is not even a goverer anymore. I'm sick of hearing about her every other day on every news source known to humanity. The only reason CNN, MSNBC, and so on keep talking about her is because we keep reading. Please, if you're sick of her like I am, please stop clicking on links! That's the only way to effect any change.

yuri   October 2nd, 2009 10:48 am ET

And we feel that Palin has to learn a lot and mature carefully, before she takes the plunge. Else, she will plunge the country into a dreary and devastating darkness, that could prove deadly.

Bigskyman   October 2nd, 2009 10:46 am ET

It might reguire that she read a newspaper or two, maybe actually see Russia.

CATINA   October 2nd, 2009 10:46 am ET

HirotomiTakemitsu   October 2nd, 2009 10:46 am ET

Good for Mr. Schmidt! This is fair warning that Sarah Palin would be a disaster for the USA.

If people think that George W. Bush was a catastrophic disaster as president (WHICH HE WAS), Sarah Palin would be a million times worse!!

The disaster the country is in today (economy, health care, 2 wars) is the fault of Bush, Cheny, Rove, Limbaugh, and all the lunatic right-wing bible evangelical Christians like Palin.

It would be the end of the USA if someone the likes of Palin became President.

Kevin   October 2nd, 2009 10:45 am ET

Palin would get 32% of the popular vote. Which is about the percentage of the far right wingers out there.

Felly   October 2nd, 2009 10:45 am ET

Palin could see Russia from Alaska. Is this who the GOP wants as their leader?

Alan   October 2nd, 2009 10:45 am ET

Please shut up, many of us, are sick of former Campaign Managers saying that it was the fault of the candidates. Mr. S. ran a very bad campaign and has injured the party so he should just go back and start again.

Luke Brown   October 2nd, 2009 10:44 am ET

Here's an idea: Next time Republicans pick a VP nominee ... pick someone you know and not just someone you think will give you a boost in the polls.

God forbid McCain won and she became President.

g   October 2nd, 2009 10:44 am ET

he is right, her book should have been called -politic,s for dummies

Big John   October 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

Of course she would be catastrophic, she's a quitter only out for Sarah. She has talents all right but not the intelligence to be a leader.
Just remember that a quitter never wins and a winner never quits.

Ann   October 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

Heck! They are just figuring that out. We American's knew it from the beginning. Now she has a book entitled "Going Rogue" it speaks volumes to all what sort of person she is.... John and Schmidt is being held accoutable from unleashing this bimbo on America!

Kansan   October 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

She would not be a winning candidate "EVER" the woman is as dumb as a rock. She makes G.W. look like Einstein by comparison. The Republicans need to start getting behind intellectuals instead of idiots if they ever want to be viable again. They need to quit letting the likes of Coulter, Rush, Beck, Hannity, Faux News and others tell them what to do and pull their heads out...The GOP is quickly becoming just another hate group instead of a politcal party.

Ruty   October 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

Sarah Palin for president is truly a JOKE. Please tell me this is a joke. This country has truly gone to hell in a hand basket. Some body please save us from this idiot. Who in their right mine would vote for her? .Oh I forgot, John McCain would.

just joe   October 2nd, 2009 10:43 am ET

Yeah, Steve, looing at the marvelous job McCain's handlers did, you ought to know.

Ruth   October 2nd, 2009 10:42 am ET

rogue: "An unprincipled, deceitful, and unreliable person; a scoundrel or rascal." I think Ms. Palin should have realized the term was not a compliment.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   October 2nd, 2009 10:42 am ET

DUH.... of course Palin would be a catastrophe; she already is!

She's yet another GOP phony more interested in herself than in this country's problems. Plus she's a LOSER.

Bob from Pittsburgh   October 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

Steve Schmidt, is a smart man, the only people in love with Sarah are the extreme right nut jobs, people that only read the bible, and are blinded by luck of reality. But most importantly it would be a catastrophe for the country.
Sad when in reality there are very smart people in the republican party, however the same people that love Sarah would not support a better candidate, because it would not fit their narrow view of the world..

Sad..

Dan, TX   October 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

Go Sarah! We love you! LOL

Duck Fallas   October 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

Please, oh please nominate this lunatic ( who we're all afraid of). I dare you.

MaryJo Bruce Surprise, Ariz   October 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

People are afraid of Mrs Palin because she is strong and not afraid to take charge. PERIOD! A person that will say what she means and mean what she says. People are afraid of the unknown. I'm not a Rep, Dem or Ind. Evenr Hilary would o been better that Obama Clown.

Ray   October 2nd, 2009 10:41 am ET

No, no, no - Palin MUST run for president in 2012. How else will the GOP finally self-destruct totally and a new political party can form? Maybe even revamp all of Washington? Palin has as much sense as a tree stump. Having her run would assure a landslide for whoever is on the Democratic ticket. It would assure that the current GOP would not get their foot in the door and damage America like they did for 8 years straight.

No, let Palin run. It's a done deal that it would be catastrophic for the GOP.

Puddin'   October 2nd, 2009 10:40 am ET

He's right, and I hope she gets the nomination so "perhaps" her big mouth might close permanently. Palin is all about money.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   October 2nd, 2009 10:38 am ET

Well, let's see what we can figure... She is an unthinking ideologue; that is bad in a leader. She doesn't seem to understand many of the questions that were posed to her during interviews; that isn't very positive either. She quit her job and didn't complete full term as governor; does she plan on finishing anything? Unless she shows that she can be better than George W. Bush, there is little likelihood that she could be anything, but a boon for the Democrats.
