McCain manager predicts Palin could prove 'catastrophic'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The man who ran John McCain's presidential campaign warned Friday that Sarah Palin could lead to a 'catastrophic' election result for the GOP in 2012 if the former Alaska governor captures the party's presidential nomination.

"I think that she has talents," Steve Schmidt, the former campaign manager of McCain's failed presidential bid, told CNN's John King. "But my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for the Republican Party in 2012, and in fact, were she the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election result."

The comments came during The Atlantic Magazine's First Draft of History Conferece, held at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

"I don't think it's inconceivable that she could be the Republican nominee for President of the United States," added Schmidt - who, among others in the McCain campaign, butted heads behind the scenes with Palin in the weeks leading up to Election Day. "I do think it's fairly inconceivable that she could be elected President of the United States."

Looking ahead to Palin's upcoming book - entitled "Going Rogue" - Schmidt predicted he would be portrayed as "anti-rogue in the running of the campaign."

Palin is a national joke and a disaster but then so was bush but he was elected. It amazes me how many Americans admire ignorance and stupidity.

This campaign manager is just trying to prepare people for what she MAY say about him in her book. I would say that a lot of people are really disappointed about her book sales–already number 1 in sales!!!!! GO SARAH!!!! Tell the truth about all of them–if they had handled you right and let you be yourself and give speeches–the election would have turned out different. They just didn't know how to run a campaign and the other side did.

Actually, I hope she does win the nomination and loses in a landslide. Maybe then she'd actually go away for good. She is not good for either party and certainly not good for the country as a whole.

Please, please nominate Sarah Palin to the Republican nomination in 2012.

A lady I talked to in Alabama said she'd vote for her because she loves children and Sarah Palin has 5 of them. An Oklahoma man adores her because she's a hunter like him. Texas, for her Pentecostal faith. A Florida couple thought she's hot and America needs glamor on the world stage. Palin is the one candidate who can absolutely secure in 2012 and beyond. For the Dems.

Sarah "The Marilyn Monroe of Politics" Palin's name shouldn't even be mentioned along with President of the United States; let alone as a viable candidate for the post. What is this country's fascination with this obviously unqualified person? How long is this Sarah Palin, candidate for president farce going to be allowed to continue? There should be a law against this kind of nonsense and that law should be enforced. George W. Bush was a nightmare, Sarah Palin as president would be a catastrophe. And guess what, all you Palin people's lives would be destroyed along with everybody else's.

And who would want someone who quit her elected job as Governor of Alaska only halfway into her first (and only term)? She thought the media was tough running for VP?

I think it would be great if Palin were to get the nod from the GOP.

Obama could go on taking care of the nations business during the election because there would be no need to campain against her. She is so self-distructive he could win against her without campaining.

She would show her total lack of intellegence, lack of world view, inability to speak corherently to any audiance other than the Rush wingnut crowd.

    Do it,
    Palin 2012

Most anyone that has been around and seen the "real" Sarah Palin will state that she is not qualified for much of anything and will be a disaster for the Republicans if they keep pushing her on the American people.

Oh, come on. America wants to see a Sarah Palin-Katherine Harris or Michele Bachmann GOP ticket in 2012. That would be so entertaining. And scary. But entertaining, nonetheless. Come on, GOP, do it for America!

Interesting comments coming from the guy who made her stifle herself and possibly cost the election for McCain. Palin was a breath of fresh air and still is while Schmidt is an old style, like Obama and the libs.

A Palin candidacy could be just the crisis that the GOP needs to break their fevered reverence for hugely ignorant people once and for all. Then, perhaps, they could return to being the center-right counterbalance to the center-left Democratic party.

We will always have both the "NUKE-EM" party of the right and the "Kumbaya" party of the left, but their numbers leave them on the fringes, where they belong.

This woman is one of the most dangerous people in American politics. Nothing but chaos and grief would come from her holding any office higher than what she has already held.

I think Palin's book is premature. I think it was purely for sensationalism, striking if you will, while the iron was hot, and there might be enough interest to actually buy the book. I think with time there would have been no interest at all, where-by a truly interesting subject never really fades.
Truly though, good books about people's lives, are written later, when accomplishments have happened, not when we quit a governorship short.
I think, in her own mind, she is something big - but then can't we all be?
    Let's all write a book.
