Grayson: Americans 'want to see a congressman with guts'

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.
Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– Rep. Alan Grayson's re-election campaign is seeing an increase in donations since his House floor speech last week in which the freshman Florida Democrat said the Republican health care plan calls for sick people to "die quickly."

"The campaign has over half a million dollars in the bank and over 5,000 first-time contributors in the past three days," Grayson told CNN Saturday, saying he has his floor speech to thank for the influx of cash.

"People want to see a congressman with guts," Grayson said. "[And] America likes to hear the truth."

On Tuesday, Grayson called the Republican health care plan a "very simple plan."

"Don't get sick. That's what the Republicans have in mind," he said. "And if you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly."

Grayson worked to clarify his remarks in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday.

"What I mean is they have got no plan," Grayson said. "It's been 24 hours since I said that. Where is the Republican plan? We're all waiting to see something that will take care of the pre-existing conditions, to take care of the 40 million Americans who have no coverage at all.

"That's what I meant when I said that the Republican plan is don't get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly."

Republicans are working to use Grayson's outburst to their advantage too– starting the website disalangrayson.com where voters are asked to contribute to the "FL-08 Nominee Fund." The site says all contributions will go toward the Republican candidate who wins the primary challenge in Florida's 8th district.

According to Grayson press secretary Todd Jurkowski, who received the latest fundraising totals from senior campaign adviser Julie Tagen, of the over half-million dollars in the bank, more than $150,000 has come in since Grayson's pitch to Congress Tuesday night.

We most certainly do. Hooray for Rep Grayson as he has said what so many of us are thinking.
The republicans will try to destroy Health Care Reform with every method possible, ignoring that the American people demand health
care reform. They will forever sacrifice us in favor of big business and contininue on their road towards destruction of our country.
Are there any decent, honorable, trustworthy republicans out there?
If so, why are you allowing your party to resort to sewer level, totally disregarding anything of benefit to our country and playing the dirtiest, most irresponsible tactics in the history of our country??

  8. If the insurance companies win, YOU LOSE

After watching again Rep Alan Grayson reveal the essence of the Republicans’ contribution to health care reform, which amounts to “don’t get sick and, if you get sick, die quickly,” and after watching again his moving words in which he apologized to all those who have died in the United States because they did not have health care coverage, I made a contribution to Rep. Alan Grayson via FDL’s “Stand by Alan Grayson” at ActBlue.

We need more leaders like Rep Grayson, as well as Senators Rockefeller, Harkin, and Schumer.

He's right. We're tired of the Republicans dominating the "debate" with their lies and misinformation and Glen Becks, and Lush Limpballs and Coulter, and Boner, and the rest of them. Now lets hope the rest of the Democrats and President Obama start taking control of this debate. If that means stooping to their level, then so be it. They've been getting away with this crap for years. From Reagan on down, they've turned "Liberal" into a dirty word. To hell with them. We liberals need to get down in the mud and fight with these idiots. Our survival as a nation is at stake.

While I would have choosen my words differently, Mr Grayson's point is very clear – The republican has become the voice of do nothing and block anything that the voters want – The really bad part to me is that they the republicans in congress have the very best medical insurance that money can buy and we are paying for it – Really folks isn't something wrong with this picture – even the harshest conservative in this country must be able to see that helping everyone to have decent affordable healthicare is good for all of us. We simply cannot continue down this do nothing road. So as Lee Iacoca said it is either "lead, follow or get out the way".

  14. If Republicans represent "christian" values, then come Judgment Day, this elitist heathen will be glad to stand apart from THAT CROWD!

America would like to see a criteria for a Congress with guts and have them defend the TRUTH in a unvarnished manner!

    Obviously, Republiklans need not apply.

Grayson, you are quite aware the Repubs have a plan, however, you accuse them of not having one.

That also makes you a liar.

In addition, you acted like a punk when you screached and hollered like Dean did years ago and slammed his future into the ground.

It was not guts you displayed, but, stupid downright arrogance. You have no class, no answers, and no future in politics.

You are nothing but a junk yard dog. period.

It's about time we see a vocal Democrat, us Democrats are always quiet and just sit back and let the Republicans prove to America time and time again that they are bad and when the economy goes bust we are the ones they call on. With the exception of Jimmy Peanut, probably because he was from the south. But look back in history at FDR and Bill Clinton, now Barack Obama. When will America finally learn that the only party to trust is the Democratic Party. Also why can the Republicans always make up lies and yell at every chance they get but when one Democrat speaks TRUTH they are on him like flies on dung?

A typical "discussion" between the Right and the Left on Health Care Reform:

Right: Tort Reform is the answer to fix Health Care.

Left: But if you look at the actual numbers, Tort Reform affects less than 1% of insurance company expenses. Furthermore, all the states that have enacted Tort Reform have shown that it has had absolutely no effect. Their rates have increased just as much as the states without Tort Reform.

Right: Tort Reform is the answer to fix Health Care!

Left: Even if Tort Reform did somehow manage to lower costs, it still does nothing to address other critical issues, such as people being denied coverage for a preexisting condition.

Right: TORT REFORM IS THE ANSWER TO FIX HEALTH CARE!

    Left: Sigh....

I want the truth, and since I already know it, I want it confirmed, this man confirmed what WE already knew. If we wer'nt so afraid to ask the hard questions, we could have stopped the mayhem from getting so entrenched. Peeps need to learn to ? authority in order to get to the real motivation. It's easy 2 uncover if you listen closely, and watch. When the 2 come into conflict pounce like Leno on Letterman. Shame my dears, works wonders.

  19. We Won Get Over It

Of course we want our party to take a stand. But it seems to me even tho WE WON THE ELECTION, all the democrats are doing is giving in to the minority party of republicans. What's wrong with the current crop of Democrats. If they don't get a spine we should just drop them.

More than that, what we need are more people rallying in support of not only the president, but rallying for rationality and common sense.

Republicans need to understand that the majority of Americans do want meaningful health care reform that helps people by reducing insurance costs and making health care affordable and accessable to ALL Americans. It's not Socialism to promote the general welfare of the people.

Rally to show people that President Obama is not the bad guy here. This is common sense that Republicans and anti-Obamabots refuse to understand.

a congressman with guts? who speaks the truth? How is his logic any more credible than Joe Wilson's? They both felt they were telling the truth. And they both now are reaping the financial rewards.
