Grayson: Americans 'want to see a congressman with guts'

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– Rep. Alan Grayson's re-election campaign is seeing an increase in donations since his House floor speech last week in which the freshman Florida Democrat said the Republican health care plan calls for sick people to "die quickly."

"The campaign has over half a million dollars in the bank and over 5,000 first-time contributors in the past three days," Grayson told CNN Saturday, saying he has his floor speech to thank for the influx of cash.

"People want to see a congressman with guts," Grayson said. "[And] America likes to hear the truth."

On Tuesday, Grayson called the Republican health care plan a "very simple plan."

"Don't get sick. That's what the Republicans have in mind," he said. "And if you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly."

Grayson worked to clarify his remarks in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday.

"What I mean is they have got no plan," Grayson said. "It's been 24 hours since I said that. Where is the Republican plan? We're all waiting to see something that will take care of the pre-existing conditions, to take care of the 40 million Americans who have no coverage at all.

"That's what I meant when I said that the Republican plan is don't get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly."

Republicans are working to use Grayson's outburst to their advantage too– starting the website disalangrayson.com where voters are asked to contribute to the "FL-08 Nominee Fund." The site says all contributions will go toward the Republican candidate who wins the primary challenge in Florida's 8th district.

According to Grayson press secretary Todd Jurkowski, who received the latest fundraising totals from senior campaign adviser Julie Tagen, of the over half-million dollars in the bank, more than $150,000 has come in since Grayson's pitch to Congress Tuesday night.

He makes me wish I lived in FL. FINALLY, a Democrat with a spine and the courage to stand up and say it like it is. If we had more people like him and Bernie Sanders representing us, we would be in great shape.

Yes, we certainly do – guts are a rarity around DC. Obama certainly doesn't have what it takes. He says he wants health care, but refuses to articulate what that means or get behind even one specific idea.

This guy hates losing too much for his own good – and ours. He goes to Denmark to push for a single city – what about the rest of us who don't happen to live in Chicago? He wants to be a hero to someone – anyone will do.

The IOC wasn't impressed (imagine that!). They cut him down to size by dumping Chicago first – pretty much a VERY distant 4th in a field of 4. Nobody really believes the nonsense about Obama representing all of America over there. The rest of us can drop dead.

    THANK YOU CONGRESSMAN GRAYSON!

May GOD Bless you for speaking out on behalf of America's middle-class.

Democrats, Republicans, and Independents voted out Bush/Cheney and their spineless GOP control Congress, only see the majority Democrats act like a bunch of cowards; (especially, the so-called Blue Dogs).

Say what you think, Grayson. I wish I could vote for you.

Republican leaders believe – deep in their souls – that the free market is a fair market. That means, if you deserve something then you will have the money to pay for it. On the other hand, if you can't afford it – whether "it" is a Cadillac or chemotherapy – then you must not deserve it. The Conservative rules are simple and straightforward, are they not?

    MY DOLLARS GOES TO GRAYSON
Please send me Congressman Grayson's web page so I can send my money to some one with guts enough to stand up to the GOP Congress; who happen to be “bought-and-paid-for" by the health insurance industry.

I admire someone who can stand up when the prevailing masses are against him, and show a SPINE. These are true leaders throughout history. WE HAVE YOUR BACK because you are in FRONT of the troops marching up the hill, not BEHIND the troops telling US to charge up the hill.for you.

Fight the good fight; now it's up to the lazy Democrats to get up off their sofas and join ranks behind Alan Grayson!!

If Grayson wanted to see a Republican alternative plan, that's what he should've asked for. Instead we get more ridiculous lies, hype, exaggerations, and innuendoes from someone who's more interested in ginning up more cash for his campaign than in someone who is truely trying to solve the heaith care crises in America. Where is Grayson's criticisims of the Blue Dog conservative Democrats?? They're the ones holding up the health care bill, not the Republicans. Get this loudmouth a talk radio program, and turn this seat over to someone who will work to fix the problem instead of lobbing partisan mouth-grenades.

One thing Grayson is good at; not answering how the Democrats suggest this government provided health care insurance will be paid for. Since our economy is already on life support and going downhill, how does he suggest we come up with another $800 billion to spend when all it does is increase the cost of health care in America? He doesn't. He just tries to create a diversion. We are not fooled.

The Democrats need more forcefull plain talkers like this guy. Why are the Democrats afraid to fight for what they want? This will be the only chance for YEARS to get a chance to fix health care. If they let it go down the tubes they'll look like fools and weaklings.

I commend Mr. Grayson for his passion and gumption to say what needed to be said. It's about time a Democrat actually fought back at these clueless GOP so called politicians. My dog, Oscar, knows more about political science than the GOP.

No, Americans, most of us, want a congressman who shows at least a modicum of fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately, that leaves out almost all of the Democrats and even most of the Republicans–for the most part, the biggest difference between the "major" parties is the way they want to waste the taxpayers' money.

That's absolutely correct. The republicans think they're the only ones that have answers, but the answer always favors the rich. The republicans are for the rich guy, not the little guy. I can see Grayson at the helm, healthcare would have been passed already if he were steering the ship.

    Grayson 2012/2016!!
