Grayson: Americans 'want to see a congressman with guts'

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– Rep. Alan Grayson's re-election campaign is seeing an increase in donations since his House floor speech last week in which the freshman Florida Democrat said the Republican health care plan calls for sick people to "die quickly."

"The campaign has over half a million dollars in the bank and over 5,000 first-time contributors in the past three days," Grayson told CNN Saturday, saying he has his floor speech to thank for the influx of cash.

"People want to see a congressman with guts," Grayson said. "[And] America likes to hear the truth."

On Tuesday, Grayson called the Republican health care plan a "very simple plan."

"Don't get sick. That's what the Republicans have in mind," he said. "And if you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly."

Grayson worked to clarify his remarks in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday.

"What I mean is they have got no plan," Grayson said. "It's been 24 hours since I said that. Where is the Republican plan? We're all waiting to see something that will take care of the pre-existing conditions, to take care of the 40 million Americans who have no coverage at all.

"That's what I meant when I said that the Republican plan is don't get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly."

Republicans are working to use Grayson's outburst to their advantage too– starting the website disalangrayson.com where voters are asked to contribute to the "FL-08 Nominee Fund." The site says all contributions will go toward the Republican candidate who wins the primary challenge in Florida's 8th district.

According to Grayson press secretary Todd Jurkowski, who received the latest fundraising totals from senior campaign adviser Julie Tagen, of the over half-million dollars in the bank, more than $150,000 has come in since Grayson's pitch to Congress Tuesday night.

The Republicans have been accusing the Democrat's plan of killing people for months. Everything from death panels, telling seniors to drop dead, to pulling the plug on granny, encouraging Iraq War veterans to commit suicide, to making breast cancer patients wait for care until they die. Now they are all mad? Seriously, do these guys have no shame at all? Do they think everyone forgets about the past 6 months of them accusing the Democrats plan of being a death sentence? Boy. I have heard of hypocrisy, but this is just too much. It would be outright laughable, if not for the fact that so many Americans ARE dying from lack of care – lack of Republicans caring!!
I just sent Rep. Grayson a donation, will do so again, and I encourage you to do the same.

No we are not proud of the Graysons and Wilsons of our Nation. Both sides of the political debate need to wake up and listen to Americans who are sick and tired of politics as usual. Uncovering corruption in Washington is paramount to a strong democracy.

WE NEED MORE LIKE HIM... like 255 more like him.... and wouldn't hurt if the other 178 cared about the US!

"Grayson exhibits the polarizing, rigid, partisan behavior that has become the Democratic Party in DC. ..."

Guess you missed the Joe Wilson comments .... if you want an enlightening read/listen ... try the new book on Andrew Jackson ... what we are seeing is mild in comparison ... not better – not more productive – just less creative!

Americans want to see a Congressman with guts? Says who? Guts to stand and ridicule other elected representatives all the while refusing to apologize for your decorum while in the House while you demanded your opposition to apologize? Guts to be rude and demeaning on your CNN appearance? Guts to call a political party and all its members knuckle dragging neanderthals?
Sorry, your definition of guts is nothing I ever want to see. You were a disgrace to both yourself and your party and your leader Pelosi is appearing to be on a par with you seeing your outburst was satisfactory with her. As for democrats who applaud and call your outburt fine because of course you were speaking the truth – shame on you for being hypocritical.

Until recently I have been more or less apolitical. I have been an independent voter who tended toward the democrats, but did not dislike Republicans. But that was then and this is now. I have been radicalized by eight years of Bush and Chaney, and especially by the Republican rank and file who have yet to repudiate incompetence and massive corruption of their administration. (Starting a war on false pretenses to give control of the Iraqi oil fields to your former employer is pretty corrupt.)

So yes, Congressman Grayson's assessment of the Republican stand on health care is accurate. Their only interest is handing Obama a political defeat. Please keep up the good work. As a group they are dangerous hypocrits from top to bottom and we need real men and women in office to stand up to them

One more footnote to my previous post – None of the politicians in Washington are willing to take on the healthcare package they are trying to cram down our throats. When they decide to jump on the bandwagon and have the same government run healthcare for themselves then maybe it would be okay for us. Until that time be afraid, be really afraid.

FINALLY someone dealing with the Republicans on the level they have chosen.

If it takes simplistic to get their attention, that's what Dems should do. You gotta know your audience and speak their language.

"People want to see a congressman with guts," Grayson said. "[And] America likes to hear the truth."

So does that mean Rep. Wilson is liked? Because he had the guts to shout out during Pres. Obama's speech. And Wilson also spoke the truth, because just last week, 30 or so Democrats started pushing for healthcare coverage for ILLEGAL aliens. Who called it? I believe Rep Wilson gets that credit.

I am getting so sick and tired of everyone showing you a little bit of hope and then nothing. How many Rep/Dems, yes both, have we put into some sort of office somewhere. We as the tax payers, ofcourse, pay for everything, screaming, "RA RA SISK BOOM BA" OR "GO GETTUM UP AND GO TIGER". We are flipping the bill for any and everyone who shows us a little, BACKBONE??? I'm sick and tired of just hearing shouts!!!! Why are their so many people on welfare, over and over and over? Why are so many banks/ wall street/ CEO's/ bonuses/ etc... getting money but we are rising again with unemployment??? Why is my husband, a disabled Gulf War Vet, still fighting with Vocational Rehab and his VA benefits????? How can people really be proud to be an American, we are such a laughing joke to the rest of the world that I even laugh at how pathetic we are... Just once, just once I would really like a good, honest, hard working senator to represent us, really. But, because we already pay for their homes, lipo, Martha's yard, cars, private schools, and of course the bill goes on, all they need to do is huff and puff a little, we donate to their office and BAM, my trip to Brazil is paid off.
    Yes, I am a Democrat....

And the commenters above who say that what is wrong with America is Grayson, Reid and Pelosi are hypocrits too. I guess it was just fine for the Republicans to accuse Democrats of wanting to kill people all summer long. But when Rep Grayson very rightly points out that after killing health care reform 15 years ago, the Republicans never lifted a finger to try and help all those who are losing their insurance, or who get denied coverage for a "pre-existing condition," or who get dropped once they are sick, or the small businesses who can not afford to offer insurance anymore, or the thousands of people who would love to OPEN a small business, but are too afraid to leave their corporate jobs, because they will lose their insurance too. Apparently these partisan Republican-lovers do not care about any of that either. It is easier to just point the finger at those whao are at least trying to help. Yep, the Republican answer – accuse Democrats of killing people by trying reform, then get all offended when their inertia is correctly pointed out. Priceless.

Finally, a Democrat with balls!! It's so good to see that at least one Democrat has finally grown the backbone to say what's on the mind of millions of Americans. The Republicans have no interest in fixing the healthcare problems of the country. Like Rep. Grayson said, their plan is simply "Don't Get Sick, and if you get sick, die very quickly!!" I will even add that, as far as the Republicants are concerned, "if you get sick and don't die quickly, ask your neighbors to organize a charity fundraiser to cever your hospital bills." These people are sooooooooooooooo stupid, they don't care about ordinary people.

However, Grayson wants to keep abortion funding in the bill. Guess he wants people to die even faster.

    Dear ThinkAgain,

Let us then call you and the dems out in simple plain language:

hateful, intollerant, judgemental, hypocritical, untruthful, slanderous, bigoted....shall I go on.

You should read your posts and those of your friends with an open mind (if you can) and see that your thinking is the greatest danger to liberty here.

mr. grayson may be drinking his own cool-aid. the jump in his funds is the result of the partisans wanting to up his profile. as far as the truth, what he said and has been saying has none of this. he chose to take the over the top approach and all he's managed to do is make himself the 'freak of the week'. once someone else does anything equally or more outrageous, the spot light will shift from him and people will probably remember him more as the man who made an A== of himself rather than someone who spoke the truth. id'd give anything to find someone in washington who actually still recognizes the truth, let alone be able to speak it.

Grayson, advise your colleagues. Don't stop here, keep calling the Repubs out, even if it exposes our own. We need the truth. For too long we've been the get along gang. We've allowed them to lie and steal and cheat us for the sake of our American capitalistic system. They were in it to suck us dry. And people were gullible because they too wanted a piece of the pie. Well they've already shown us how they use us to fight against our own interests. Tell us the truth, we are big boys and girls, we can handle it. America is in the middle of the great exposure. Everything is beginning to click into place, so don't get caught up trying to abuse your power or you'll be in the same position as the nutty side of the Republican Party. Sure wish we could weed out the Dixiecrats and the crime lords. But, that'll leave them with about 22% of their entire party. Go get em' congressman!
