WASHINGTON (CNN) –President Barack Obama will meet with the Dalai Lama after the president's trip to China, the State Department said Monday.

"The United States government thinks that he is an internationally revered religious and cultural figure, he is a Nobel Prize laureate," State
Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.

"The president has decided that he will meet with the Dalai Lama at a mutually agreeable time."

Where is the apology from the media at jumping to conclusions and spreading yet again false, unsubstantiated rumours. The press in America is laughable and will make this seem like the President has changed his mind rather than admit they yet again screwed up!!

Don't expect anything more from president Obama than a confident smile and a solid handshake, your grace. There's nothing else behind the curtain it turns out. But he is good for a photo op. Really good!

Nice of his holiness obama to grant the Dali Lama a visit. Is he sure he has time? I guess he can take a few mins from his busy we suck 09 tour and olympic bids. Maybe he will learn a little something about humility.

My prayer is that thousands of jobs will soon become available. Unemployment is the US's most pressing issue right now.

I thought this was ground breaking until I learned that Bush met with the Dalai Lama 4 times. Bush also "presented" The Congressional Gold Medal to his holliness in the Capitol Rotunda almost exactly 2 years ago. If Obama decided not to meet with the Dali Lama now, it would show weakness to our debtholders, China. It would also send the same signal to the rest of the world. Not good for future diplomatic or economic efforts.

Funny Obama cant meet with him now when he is in the USA and its the first President that hasn.t met up with the Dali since 1991 He didnt want to make it look bad for himself before he meets with china next week . Lets admit it now he is just trying to save face . This guy is always trying to have it both ways and never really making those diffrences he preaches about. ether you do or you dont. I must say SNL had this president down to the tee this weekend........

Funny, Democrats and media feel the same about Obama.

No one has commented on this– I'm surprised it's even happening, though. I can't imagine how China will react.

If Obama says or does anything of any substance regarding the Dalai Lama and Tibet, he will get high praise from me. But I don't have my hopes up.

I wonder how many republicans will attack the President for meeting with the Dalai Lam? Oh and how many comments on here will bring up the fist bump in an attempt to compare 2 black politicians.

Maybe Obama can get the Dalai Lama to pray for civil unity in America.
