Letterman invokes Palin in apology

Leterman is issuing another apology to Sarah Palin.
Leterman is issuing another apology to Sarah Palin.

(CNN) - As long as David Letterman is apologizing after revelations he had sexual relations with members of his staff, why not throw an extra one in to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin?

The embattled late night comedian wrapped up his lengthy apology to his staff and family Monday night with a light-hearted reference to the public spat he and Palin had three months ago over an inappropriate joke.

"Through all of this, you have to ask yourself what really happened. And what really happened was you can't be victimized by criminals. So you have to go ahead and push back if you're being pushed by something illegal like this," Letterman told his audience Monday.

"And through all of the heartache, and the attention, and the embarrassment, I still feel like I did the right thing, and now also, because what can it hurt, once again I'd like to apologize to the former Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. I'm terribly, terribly sorry. So there we go," he added to cheers from the crowd.

Letterman joked in June that Palin's "daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" at a recent Yankees game, but later insisted he was referring to Palin's 18-year-old, Bristol, who gave birth to a boy in December, and not the 14-year-old Willow who actually attended the game.

Palin, John McCain's running mate in last year's presidential election, called the joke "inappropriate" and "sexually perverted," and a Palin spokeswoman said it would be wise to "keep Willow away from David Letterman."

Like John Edwards, Elliot Spitzer and all the republican fun guys, Letterman needs to resign from public view. They all need to go away and stop providing fodder for news media sources like CNN who can't seem to get enough of this crap.

"You can't be a victim"??? What about learning to keep your urges under control and keeping your pants zipped around people that WORK FOR YOU? I guess that basic piece of wisdom doesn't apply to celebrities.

I did not take this apology as sincere. Letterman is obsessed with Palin. Letterman was funny 20 years ago, but has long lost it. He has become a liberal quack.

She's only making a spectacle of it to gain attention. Nearly everyone in the media has made a commit like that about Palin's daughters so why come after him about it? The joke is all about the Irony of how she preached abstinence and such, not an actual take on how he feels about relations with a minor. If everyone took comics seriously like this then their would be a lot of them behind bars for the empty threats and jokes they've made about the presidents and people in general over the years. In short; He shouldn't have to apologize to this. If you don't find it funny then don't laugh and less jokes of it will be made. It's just pointlessly overblown.

I used to think Letterman was funny. The last few years he's become just a mean, bitter old man. Time to hang it up Dave.

Oh please....Palin's unwillingness to complete her job as Governer in Alaska warrants her apologizing to her constituents for taking the easy-way-out and making money as a media maven/entertainer just like Dave has been doing for years. I'm not really even a fan of Letterman, but it would seem that his detractors are doing a good job of pushing his TV ratings even higher. Isn't that what Palin's fans accuse her detractors of doing? No wonder she thinks writing memoirs and doing speaking events is more lucrative than being a fulcrum for "reform" in U.S./State Government as she touted in '08 during the campaign.

Invoking Palin for anything, is like invoking severe stupidity as a means to learn calculus.

Don't ever apologize to the hate-mongering witch of the north.

She hasn't apologized for her lies about death panels and all the other stuff she has put out there for her wing-nut base.

I am no Palin fan (and happy to see her book at #2 on BN.com today) but I have to give her credit for not saying anything about Letterman's current problems. And bravo to him for apologizing for something, too.

Hey Dave, its called Karma. Its a shame your wife won't clean you out financially in a divorce. I guess Mrs. Palin is having the last...and best laugh at your expense.

Why give Letterman and Palin such extensive publicity? They have both shown they are rather frail, errant humans, like other human beings.
