DeLay calls it quits

An injured DeLay had to call it quits on Dancing with the Stars Tuesday night.

(CNN) - Tom DeLay's dancing days have come to an end.

While miraculously escaping another round of elimination on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" Tuesday night, the former Republican House majority leader voluntarily withdrew from the widely-watched competition on recommendations from his doctor and the show's producers.

The man once known as "The Hammer" on Capitol Hill said he was just too injured to continue, developing stress fractures in both his feet that made it very difficult to endure the rigors of the competition.

Delay originally remained defiant in the face of such pain, declaring last week, "nothing's going to stop me from doing this dance." But this week's round of competition proved too taxing on the 62 year-old, evidenced by a wince-inducing performance Monday of the samba to War's "Why can't we be friends."

In the end, the man who gave in to few fights in Washington had to call it quits on the ABC hit series.

"If you can't practice, you make a fool of yourself out here," DeLay said. "I don't want to do that to [my dancing partner] Cheryl."

Carried out on wheelbarrow on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Tuesday night, DeLay appeared slightly embarrassed over the development: "A boy from Texas breaking his feet dancing...," he said to laughter.

Still though, DeLay remained confident his skills could have carried him forward.

"Can you shake your booty like I can?" Delay asked a skeptical Kimmel.

Asked if he his performance will inspire other indicted politicians to dance, Delay - who was charged with criminal violations of state campaign finance laws but never convicted - said "hey, it keeps you out of jail."

"But God for bid if you end up in jail, it's not a good thing for the inmates to see on reruns," Kimmel replied.

What made he start in the first place. He had – has – and never will have RHYTHM!! So did they have to DELAY the show so they could wheel him away??? Jeez – I have more rhythm typing!

I am glad he is off the show, I will start watching it again. He needs to be serving time in an orange jump suit, not dancing on the T V. Thank you

Idiot behavior by an idiot. Sniffed way too much bug juice when he was a BIG TIME BUSINESSMAN killing critters for a living, in Houston, prior to his "career" in the U. S. Congress. What a two bit creep!

The man should be in jail for his crimes. But failing that, for the way he wiggled his big butt on stage. Gross!!

We don't care about Tom DeLay. We're glad he's out of office, but otherwise, he can fade into history with his buddy, Larry Craig.

How many times will people like Delay thumb their noses at Americans? Executives take their unearned bonuses in the billions, politicians like Ensign, Dodd, Craig, Sanford, and on and on blatantly break the law and scoff at justice, knowing they will never serve a day of the jail time they so richly deserve. They have the nerve to deny the obvious facts and rub our noses in the mud, like Delay with his "keeps you out of jail" jokes.

These guys are dragging the entire country down, and they laugh about it. Where is there a prosecutor with some spine to take these criminals on and put them in jail where they belong?

Why should I or anybody else have any respect for the law if the law-makers are the most heinous law-breakers?

I think that DeLay quit only because he did not want to be eliminated by the fans. I don't think that he had the fan base he claimed. This was probably just a deal between him and ABC to save face.

I think it was a clever move on Delay's part to feign injury! He had already embarrassed himself, he was the WORST dancer on the show, but I will admit that he had the largest EGO! If he hadnd't dropped out, he would have been thrown out! He was terrible.

He really thought shaking his booty looked good! Oh, what a fool that man made of himself! His fat butt on camera was almost too much for me! He obviously had all of the Republican lunatics call in to vote for him! I was surprised he made it after dropping his partner on the floor in round two! I am glad he is gone, but they did hint they may bring him back for the Texas two-step later on!

I think DWTS's has been extra kind to Delay. They must all be Republicans!

Well, while DeLay was my least favorite American for quite some time, I do feel for his pain. I've suffered those stress fractures-during a charity run, no less-and know how long and critical the recovery process is. Months of being careful; not dancing!

We wish he'd gone the Dancing route much sooner, maybe instead of Congress, is all.

They only thing more entertaining than Delay quitting is Failin' Palin commenting on Facebook that America should not quit in Afganistan. Just send more US troops to get killed in combat is her suggestion. No plan, no strategy, no thinking – just flag waving and sacrificing more American blood, treasure and firepower. Now that's red blooded, American Taliban-style neo-conservatism you can believe in.

You gotta admit it's funny – Palin telling the POTUS not to quit half way thru a project that he never started and Bushie screwed up so bad there is no end in sight and Bin Ladin still running around free as a bird....HAR-DE-HAR-HAR!

I am offended by Mr DeLay's perfomance – both on the show and off – on so, so many levels!! Yeah.. go on, keep joking about criminal indictments.

This piece is yet another non-news story by CNN. Why don't you do some real news coverage, in-depth investigative reporting, or at least use correct grammar in your non-news stories? "God for bid?" How about "forbid"? Stop relying on the public to do the news for you, stop with newscaster commentaries, and cover Darfur, Afghanistan, etc...

Maybe Mr. DeLay needs a bone density test. Maybe he doesn't get enough calcium.
