Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will host a GOP fundraiser in Iowa on November 7.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will be the keynote speaker at an Iowa Republican Party fundraiser on November 7, kicking off the party's primary season battle for the governor's mansion in that state, and stirring speculation he is planning a presidential run in 2012.

In July, the Iowa Republican Party told CNN they had been courting former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to headline the annual dinner. Around that time, the party also extended an invitation to Pawlenty, Republican Party chair Matt Strawn told CNN Wednesday.

"We've got an open invitation to Sarah Palin whenever she wants to come to Iowa," Republican Party Executive Director Jeff Boeyink told CNN Wednesday. But, he added, "we are thrilled to get Tim Pawlenty to headline our event."

Tickets to the annual "Leadership for Iowa" event being held on the Iowa State Fairgrounds are being sold for $25. The party expects between 500 and 1,000 attendees.

The Minnesota DFL accused Pawlenty Wednesday of neglecting his state duties in favor of his political ambition.

"Spending most of his time on the road these days, Governor Pawlenty's more-of-the-same mentality and personal ambitions have made him little more than a suave hit man pandering to right-wing extremists," DFL Chair Brian Melendez said in a statement Wednesay.

So far, 11 candidates have announced their intention to run against incumbent Democratic Gov. Chet Culver next year.

Pawlenty, who has become a regular critic of the Obama administration, debuted a new political action committee  last week, a step that takes him closer to a potential 2012 White House bid.

Other possible 2012 candidates to pass through the state recently include Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee  , who won the states caucuses last year.

The gubernatorial primary will be held on June 8, 2010.

So what, bid DEAL, this LOSER is HUGE JOKE, this is NONSENSE

Marie MD   October 7th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

CNN will do ANYTHING and run ANY story to get that quitter's name in the news.
I am sure they won't print this, but you want to NEVER, EVER hear or read about her again? Try the MSNBC and even the fauxnews websites. There is not one single story about her and her facebook page or, better yet, why she is still considered a political figure by CNN.
This guy is toast also. The repugs don't have on viable candidate for 2012.

Real Minnesotan   October 7th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

PLEASE explain to me how he ruined this state??? I would love to hear your reasons? The main thing every single Liberal idiot in my state is that it has a Liberal majority dealing with our states issues, the only reason why we aren't as messed up as California is we have T-Paw veto all these other UNNECESSARY tax and spend bills and ACTUALLY try to balance our budget. Get a Clue you liberal morons and get a job while your at it so I don't have to pay for your income while you sit on your butt every day

Bill   October 7th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Boy, lookee at all the small minded backwoods Minnesotan's out there bashing the Governor. This of course is from the mouths of DFL'ers who DID NOT SUBMIT A BALANCED BUDGET ON TIME HERE TO THE GOVERNOR!!. The Democrats in this state are a bunch of neutered inept politico's who couldn't manage a nickel lemonade stand on a street corner. At least Pawlenty stood up and did his job by following the Minnesota Constitution which he took an oath on to deliver a balanced budget. That's something our Dem's here are not interested in doing nor capable of doing.

Connie, Indiana   October 7th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

"enough" has be a republican..Who spent more than Bush and Co, that put us in this mess. Didn't Cheney say that budget deficets didn't matter, now it is a big deal..and why, oh that is right a democrat is at the helm.. Grow up for pete sake..stop the garbage talk..

itsavote4aclown   October 7th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Had enough of Bush/Cheney why vote for a repeat lets pick a dog any dog vote for a dog but NOT this idiot

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ   October 7th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I'll pay 25 dollars to shut him up. This turkey can't win a game of solitaire, much less an election. The "Party of No" needs to shut this guy up. Or better yet, take him to the enemy and let him bore them to death. We'd win the war soon enough.

This clown is missing his tin foil hat, and if the GOPers don't have anyone better than this pastey doughboy, it's going to be a banner decade for the Dems.

Linda from Minnesota   October 7th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

On one hand, I like it that he's gone from my state so much because he's a horrible governor. On the other hand – he's being paid to be governor with tax dollars so he should be here doing his job. Either way, I hope he doesn't fool enough people to actually get the republican nomination.

chuck   October 7th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Pawlenty is a very sick man. SHAMEFUL

Ted   October 7th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

The GOP is lost and will stay lost as long as they keep asking Sarah the quitter to show up and talk. Good for them.

Obama/Biden 2012

ME   October 7th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Wait 'til Sarah gets out there....she'll blow the roof off :)

THE PARTY OF NO HAS GOT TO GO   October 7th, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Why can't they stop complaining about people who are actually trying to make a difference. All the GOPers can do is whine and complain, whine and complain. They had 8 years to do something and what did they do? NOTHING.

GO AWAY, NOW.

I really don't like this guy. He's such a phoney and a fake. He no more cares about doing something for the people than the Taliban. He makes me sick, really. The Party of NO has got to GO.

haren   October 7th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

another GOP buffoon.

JN   October 7th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Another Republican imbecile with just delusional ambition and nothing to offer but a lie that they will do a better job. How about trying to solve problems now?

ThinkAgain   October 7th, 2009 2:14 pm ET

What's with all these Republican politicians and their weird, deer-in-the-headlights blank faces? Totally creepy – how anyone could vote for Pawlenty is beyond me!

JDD   October 7th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

"Spending most of his time on the road these days, Governor Pawlenty's more-of-the-same mentality and personal ambitions have made him little more than a suave hit man pandering to right-wing extremists," DFL Chair Brian Melendez said in a statement Wednesay.

It's comments like this one – laced with sarcasm and childish insulting descriptions, and using the word "extremist" to describe anyone who is not squarely on your side – that convince me over and over again that I want to support neither major political party, and would be happy to bring in a Third.

Mr. Melendez, Chair of the DNC – (Chair of the DNC!) – I'll be looking for that next comment from you or those in your party that decry the vile, petty, schoolground insults of the "right" – while you claim to be above that type of action.

Bush's "Suck"cess: My Pet Goat, Mission Accomplished & Heckuva Job Brownie   October 7th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

Thanks to T-Paw, the 2012 elections will be "catastrophic" for the Rushcheneycans. He's just a male version of Palin who couldn't ever get >50% of the vote for governor in Minnesota!

vick   October 7th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

who donates to this idiots???? ooo let me guess huge corporations

Lynda   October 7th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

He must be a real winner if the other person they were courting for their KEYNOTE speaker was PALIN.....If I was a republican I wouldn't even want my name on the same piece of paper as PALIN"S.......to be associated with this woman will be the same outcome for them as it was for McCain..........LOSER

Jus' gotta be! !   October 7th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

Must be something to the old saw "It's all in the name." Lessee,
we have Impaling, palor (what one gets from being impaled), Pawlenty, Palin.....looks like it's shaping up to be pa-lenty of Palin in the GOP future. And it won't be too soon since Rush is shedding his leadership mantle for NFL devil dancing.

Franky, Land of Lincoln   October 7th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

You know, Iowa should be pretty good, real good.

Is no surprise that Gov Palin got invited and if I recall last time she showed up, she did have a big crowd and it can be a tale of whether she may be serious or not. But I really do believe after what happens with the book sales(by the way, very, very good sales), I think we'll get an idea what she plans to do next. Depending what kind of advice she seeks and plans.

Don't got nothing against Gov Pawlenty, he's cool by my book. And whether he's satisfying his own personal ambitions can be anyone's guess for that matter. Plus, I'm sure or think is just a one time thing. Iowa can be crucial for the next coming election for all candidates.

No More Republicant's Needed   October 7th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

"President" Pawlenty??? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!! That's a really good joke!

hockey mom from Minnesota (go Wild!)   October 7th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Hey Tim.... how about staying home and doing your job! I know we're not the most exciting bunch, but Is it going to take another bridge collapse to finally get some attention from you???

Victim of Liberal stupidity   October 7th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

Say hello to the next President of the United States...
The Republicans could run a donkey with two asses after 3-years of this Bozo President and Congress and America will back their play. It wont be an election of who is the lesser of the two evils, it will be who will put a job on the table and a paycheck in my account. I don't care who is next as long as they focus on One task, rebuilding America to the once great Nation it was. America is broken, we need to fix our problems first, we have carried the World far too long. It is time to ween the puppies and kill the ticks!

some guy in New Hampshire   October 7th, 2009 1:44 pm ET

I agree that the voice of third party is needed but we already have one - it's the great majority of voters whose interests and ideas aren't represented by either Democrat or Republican ideologies. A huge number of us don't see government as a faith crusade but as a place to apply management tools that lead to efficiency and effectiveness. If we could apply management techniques instead of canned ideologies to our problems, we'd throw out the ideological zealots and wind up with a government that works better.

Mississippi Miss   October 7th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

My pet hamster (if I had one) could defeat President Obama in 2012.

The mystery remains... how did he become the President of a country that he is ashamed of?

Pawlenty and other GRATEFUL AMERICANS will bring respect and honor back to the oval office, thanks be to all of you who make this happen.

Until then... I will keep shaking my head in amazement that
Barak Hussein Obama is sitting in that chair, talking on that phone, and bringing this country to great shame.

NOT THE KINDA GUY TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, BUT I TOLD YOU SO   October 7th, 2009 1:39 pm ET

What you dems need to understand is that ssince ACORN wont be there to rig anymore elections, Obama has no chance of bein reelected.

NOT THE KINDA GUY TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, BUT I TOLD YOU SO   October 7th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

The next president of the United States Tim Pawlenty, ladies and marxists!

Eric   October 7th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

I am in Minnesota and I our state is in shambles. He needs to either resign and let someone who can actually get some work done take over or get back to work. Here our state is hurting and he is nowhere to be found.

kim   October 7th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

Things are bad right now, the democrats are slowly but surely trying to dig us out of this hole. But think about where we would be if a republican still held the office of president. It would be armegeddon, and I mean FOR REAL. We have only just begun to reform this great nation, dont let the republicans take us backwards. Vote as if your life depended on it.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   October 7th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Minnesota has Pawlenty of Nothing..... yet another GOP goon craving the national spotlight.

KG, MN   October 7th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Pawlenty, Pawlenty? Oh yeah, he used to be the so-so Governor of my state but he disappeared in 2009. Some look-a-like whacko talking presidential wannabe took his place.

ICannotwait   October 7th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

I can not wait for this guy to disapear from minnesota, he ruined this wonderful state. Minnesota is Blue state not more GOP in minnesota.

Idiot_Boehner   October 7th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

It is time to make sure we keep the country away from the "war at all cost" wingnuts, who have almost destroyed our country.

JR   October 7th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

He doesn't support the president and he doesn't support America; therefore, I can't support him.

Peter   October 7th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

Yawn!!! boring news

I want to hear how republicans have good moral values and fiscal reponsibility LOOK AT THERE GREAT TRACK RECORD just think no health care for americans and we will never get out of the war

Moderate Democrat   October 7th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

The people in the story about Obama fundraising, where are they when it comes to this guy fundraising?

Are they Hypocrates, Biased, or just simply Ignorant?

It's ok for these politicians to campaign and fund raise, that's simply what they do. Anybody who doesn't realize that or complains about it when it happens, is nothing short of a complete moron! (yes, even Sarah Palin is out raising money from the commies for herself and her ambitions to enact the republican communist policies).

We Won Get Over It   October 7th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

I hope he gets stuck in a time warp and never returns to MInnesota...we would have been so so so much better without this man...and if he ever decides to run in earnest the people from Minnesota will burn up the net with how he ruined our great state.

the real Mike in MN   October 7th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Iowa can keep him, and if he does run for president, he won't win MN.

No More Incumbents   October 7th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

We need a 3rd party.

linda   October 7th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

Pawlenty is an idiot – a fear-mongerer, wing nut – who has done nothing for the state of Minnesota.

He is an absentee governor, has never received the majority vote,
and would have lost the last election if an independent candidate
was not in the running.

Stop giving this small-minded person so much press – he is
a toddler representing the Party of NO

bellablue   October 7th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

Gee! I wonder how come Sara Palin didn't get the nod?????????????????????????????????

dave g   October 7th, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Ahhhhh, the hypocrisy on both sides:

Republicans criticize Obama for his travel and fundraising for political ambitions.
Democrats criticize Pawlenty for his travel and fundraising for political ambitions.

So predictable. There is so much noise and noise about the noise, and campaigning for the "next big job" that Americans and our "Leaders" have lost the message.

Let's start addressing the nation's problems with a third party

Rafael VA   October 7th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Mr. Melendez but if he quits then he is a quitter. No matter what he dose you will find a way to disagree with him. Stays he is neglecting the state, leaves he is then labeled a quitter hahahahaha. It's amazing how I can predict stupid politicians like Mr. Melendez.

Andrea   October 7th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Wow, Pawlenty is living in a fantasy world. Does he seriously think he has a chance against Obama?

Rafael VA   October 7th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

All Governors do the same when they are running for another office and Senators do to, in fact they all do. Mr. Melendez your argument is stupid. Why? Did you criticize Obama when he spent 2 years out of Senate while running for Prez? Exactly!!! Stop the politics as usual sir and find something better to do other than criticize people that are trying to do good to our country.

Enough   October 7th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Time for real change............vote out all Democrats and take back our country from the Tax and spend Liberals. Let's return to a work ethic and not a gimme ethic.

S Callahan NYS   October 7th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

With the low cost I suspect he'll get alot more attendee's than 1000....

Danny   October 7th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

This article and the one before about President Obama helping Dems raise money illustrate exactly why out political system is so broken. To be competive you must raise millions of dollars (for a job that pays about 185k), which makes the candidate obligated to big donors when it comes time to vote. I don't know how anyone can say that political contributions, especially from corporations and PACs, are not bribery, but God help us if the Supreme Court decides that limits on how much a corporation can contribute is unconstitutional and impedes their right to free speech. If that happens then politicians will be bought and sold openly and there will be nothing to protect voters from their greed. I personally don't understand how giving money is considered free speech. What I'm doing now is free speech.

Aunt Bea and Opie   October 7th, 2009 12:37 pm ET
