Jobless lose lifeline as Senate stalls

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – As thousands of jobless Americans lose their weekly unemployment checks every day, Congress is still debating who should qualify for a benefits extension.

The House passed a bill last month lengthening benefits by 13 weeks for those in high-unemployment states. While Senate leaders said at the time they would act soon, the proposal has languished as Democrats argue over the terms.

Meanwhile, 400,000 people ran out of benefits in September and another 208,000 are set to lose them this month, according to the National Employment Law Project.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., is pushing legislation that would lengthen benefits for the jobless nationwide by four weeks. Those in states with unemployment rates greater than 8.5% would receive a total of 17 additional weeks.

We need to stop paying people who aren't working....that includes welfare, unemployment and about have of the people on disability. We need people to do something in order to get money – - maybe a volunteer job or a road fixing job or something. This country started its downward spiral when we because economically strong and started handing checks to people who do not work! Everyone must work! Everyone must pay some taxes!

It is impossible to underestimate the callousness of our lawmakers. None of them obviously believe "there but for the grace of God, go I." Do they really want to turn on the evening news and see people living on the sidewalks having been evicted from their homes and apartments with no job, no income and no where to go other than some tent city or alley. The shelters in my region are turning people away because they simply do not have enough beds. The local churches that have opened their doors to a small number are getting flack from the city fathers. As a child I remember seeing pictures of the soup lines from the Depression. Most of all, I remember the pictures of the faces of men without hope, vacant dirty faces, eyes without focus. It is not only men. It is children too without a safety net. Millions for the banks and the insurance companies, but Congress is stalled for the people. Is this going to be the new face of America?

This is disgusting. Does the Senate know what the word EMERGENCY means?

400,000 people lost benefits last month. I am one of them. I'm lucky, I have family that can and is helping. But so many people don't.

We need this money NOW! Reid should be impeached for failing to bring this bill to the floor immediately. They've had it for almost 3 weeks now.

Despite the reductuion in jobless rate, recently, it ain't any solace for the job seekers, and the unemployment rate is still climbing steadily to Lord knows what number. This engenders a disconnect between those two numbers, much to our chagrin.

The democrats with their Union friends helped send the US into a service sector economy from a manufacturing/agricultural sector economy especially during the Clinton administration. If we sent the illegal immigrants home and stopped bringing in 1.5 million foreign workers a year during this troubling time alot of jobs could become available and yes if you were not willing to work at McDonalds or as a janitor you do not deserve an extension on unemployment.

    But but but but

They will vote themselves raises in January. Why worry about the peons that pay them and their health care and paid month-long vacations 4 or 5 times a year – not to mention the long-weekends - no wonder they don't have time to read what they write before they sign it.

    GOP is our Death Panel.

They can search out the TV cameras to get their mugs on tv, and pass resolutions on BCS, etc., and bicker and stall, but they don't have time to do the job we pay them to do.

    GOP is our Death Panel.

Unemployment is NOT a handout. It is a benefit paid for by employers, and indirectly, by the employees. It is NOT WELFARE. It is calculated on how much you have worked in preceeding quarters, and how much you earned.

However, until we can stop the bleeding of our professional jobs to offshore facilities, we can't help those who are unemployed, even with unemployment benefits. The greatest number of us who have used unemployment would MUCH prefer to work!

Expecting the stimulus package to turn everything around in less than 9 months is unrealistic and foolish. However, legislation on offshoring would help enormously, and quickly. Increase taxes on the companies offshoring our jobs to match tax income lost. Repeal tax breaks and incentives for companies offshoring. You'll see a turnaround a lot quicker!

END the AFGHAN WAR, and we will have $864 BILLION dollars freed up to provide unemployment to our people AND PAY for healthcare!

NO surprise there. The big businesses get their bail outs. The unemployed get nothing. Makes sense to me. If Billy Jeff Clinton had not shoved NAFTA through, the jobs would still be there.

Stop relying on the government to help you! Help yourselves, dems and repubs don't really care and shouldn't care about giving out money. It's tough, I was just there, but there are ways. It's the American way! Pull yourselves up!

Wake Up people! This Government doesn't care about you. Look to where they are getting their money from. Certainly it doesn't come from "We the People". Our Governemnt is accepting money, gifts and favors from the special interest groups, lobbyists, Wall Street, banks, global Corporations, auto industry and unions. The last thing on their mind is “We the People”.
The Wealthy got their bailout and " We the People" are paying for that in increased taxes, loss of our jobs, loss of our homes, worthless US Dollars and the loss of our Freedom!
It does matter if they are Democrats or Republicans. It doesn't matter if they liberal or conservitive.
Read "End the Fed" by Ron Paul today!
Our government is nothing more than a Grifter's scam.
