White House: Fox is 'opinion journalism masquerading as news'

(CNN) - The Obama White House is ramping up its offensive against Fox News.

This summer, President Obama signaled his unhappiness with the network. "We've got one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration."

Over the past month, that discontent has translated into an all-out war against Fox. Last month, Obama notably skipped a sitdown with Fox as he plugged his health care bill in one-on-one interviews on every other major news network. Earlier this month, the White House published a rare blog post directly attacking a news organization, slamming Fox for its "disregard for the facts" and pointing readers to an independent fact-checking organization that had debunked "more Fox lies."

Now, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn is questioning whether Fox is in the news business at all. "It's opinion journalism masquerading as news," she told Time of the news network, in an interview released Thursday. Dunn also made it clear this won't be the last White House blast aimed at the network: "They are boosting their audience. But that doesn't mean we are going to sit back."

Yeah I guess Van Jones and The Acorn Videos were just opinion pieces until Cnn and NBC got in on. Someone needs to hold the gov't feet to the fire. Barry for being so "smart" you have alot of dumb associatiates.

The ratings of Fox compared to other news organizations sure does not support that misleading statement. Fox is the basically the only organization not in bed with the White House and they can't take it.

Keep going White House, it only makes Fox have more viewers!!
White House needs to stop acting like "sissies" and become thick skinned. Hey if you are doing nothing wrong, you should have nothing to worry about. But you sure are worrying!

    Go Fox!!!!

All you have to do is look at the cable news ratings to see who is covering the news. He can avoid Fox but he can't make everyone quit watching them.

You know why they don't say the same thing about MSNBC....because it sides with them. Just like most of the phonies at CNN. Objective Newscasters are a myth. Objective News is a myth. They don't exist.

So true. And it seems like CNN is stepping up their attacks on this so-called news network, ever since that Tea Party protest nonsense when Fox claimed every other network missed the story they helped create.

I suppose the question is, though, what do you do when 30%-35% of the most powerful nation on earth doesn't care how biased and opinionated their "news" coverage is? I certainly don't have an answer, but I'm glad those who believe in truth and facts are willing to call a spade a spade.

Sheppard Smith is the closest thing to a journalist they have on that network.

The Obama administration is so right. Fox criticizes EVERY thing Obama does. It seems to me that they would rather see our country go under than for Obama to be successful. I have never seen such cruelty toward a president. They appear to HATE him. I rarely watch fox anymore. Even Greta, who I use to respect , has gone anti Obama. It seems to me that they must be getting directions from their boss and doing all this acting to keep their job. I don't believe they even believe all they say. It isn't just one or two persons it is the entire station. I could not believe their glee at our not getting the olympics. It made me very angry. Obama tried, I appreciate that.

Yay! I love it that the WH continues to be dumb enough to criticize FoxNews. Continue to underestimate the American people, please. Every time you do, Fox's ratings grow & grow & grow. It's no mistake that Fox beats all its competitors COMBINED.

If the other cable news networks would get a clue and report actual news rather than just act as puppets for the Obama administration maybe more people would have an interest in tuning in.

Kudos to the Obama administraton for calling a spade a spade.

Fair and balanced, my left foot. Fox News is a rallying point for the birthers, the bullies at healthcare forums, and continues with its dog-whistle commands to incite hate and violence.

People like FOX news because they can see the stories other media outlets don't cover. Look how long it took CNN to cover stories like ACORN, John Edwards and Van Jones.

It is really starting to get scary if you are critical of this administration.

So ONE major news network is critical and this is bad? Can we get you a tissue Mr. President?

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

They dont want the truth to be told, simple as that. They will go to any extent to shut up people that tell the truth.
This Obama wont see the Dali Lama, sp?, he only talks with communist countries, and kicks our allies to the curb, he wont listen to the generals that are telling him what they need in Afganistan, he cant think for himself, either get out of there or send troops to protect our boys. It seems he is even throwing the very ones that are giving their lives for our country and freedom to the curb. It makes me sick what he is all doing, and some stupid people beleive him, they will be sorry when this country is turned upside down by him..........

If you disagree with the Obama administration...you are opinion journalism masquerading as news. If you disagree with the Obama administration...you are un-American. "We've got one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration."

And the rest of them are entirely devoted to lavishing your administration with praise. Fox by itself isn't fair and balanced, but there needs to be someone talking about the other side.

    Good.

FNC has long been a political organization allied with the right. It's obvious they have an agenda that is focused on opposing most everything Obama and the Democrats are trying to accomplish. There is nothing 'fair and balanced' about FNC. Real journalist REPORT the news... they don't PROMOTE it as Rick Sanchez has pointed out.

Fox is biased, but so is CNN, MSNBC, and NBC, but CNN is far more credible than NBC/MSNBC. It's not hard to see it on both sides. Fox does have some very credible news reporters and a large demographic of viewers so I believed the President did error not giving an interview with Fox News. It tells me that Fox doesn't play his media and stage control games – such as we've seen at WH townhall meetings. Fox guys like Glenn Beck repeatedly challenges the WH and other news organization to prove him wrong, such as he reported on Van Jones and other WH special advisers (aka: Czars), and I'm surprised someone hasn't jumped on this. Take on his claims about SEIU, Acorn, and WH czars. The truth matters deeply to responsible Americans.
