WASHINGTON (CNN) - This past summer, Rep. Jeff Flake went into the wild.
After two years of planning, the Arizona Republican spent a week on a remote, uninhabited island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, eating coconuts and fish he caught with a spear, purifying his own water, sleeping in a hammock on the beach, and writing daily in his journal.
He listed a number of reasons for going on this trip, calling them "more physical than spiritual." And while he didn't end up talking to a volleyball, like Tom Hanks did in "Cast Away," he did find some unlikely friends - a few hermit crabs.
"I picked up a hermit crab, and, spotting the sharpie, wrote the number '1' on the back of his shell, and put a circle around it. I repeated this act whenever I felt a bit lonely," Flake wrote. Later, he added, "I've labeled 102 at this point with a sharpie marker. I just saw number one again today. He's remains one of my favorites, as is number 12, long since forgiven for pinching my toe."
Who cares? Really CNN, nothing to report on? What a waste of time?
Wait... then who took the picture?
This guy is a complete goofball as a congressman, but that trip sounds pretty cool.
Perfect last name. And this is news? When will you report on the "Man Bites Dog" story? You pushing this Flake up so he can run for some higher office? McCain quitting? Hmmmm.
Only 1 week? Obama has taken 2 months off already. Flake got robbed.
wow any way we can get MORE Republicans to do this? Go to a island to survive with nothing.....send Rush Limbaugh out there so that they can eat him FIRST. That way at least they won't starve.
Mr. Flake didn't find his bowl of milk but he ended up getting crabs! Wonder what happened to #2?!
Stop whining about him and how "his name fits him perfectly." It's a simple, adventurous trip. What does it have to do with him a person and his legislative abilities? Nothing, that's what. And believe it or not, this is coming from a DEMOCRAT in his home district. He's not as stupid or "flaky" as you all are making him out to be.
Gee Paul....bush took a total of over 600 days off during his eight years. More than four or five president combined.....I googled...and posting about him taking all that time off from the guy who panned Obama are nowhere to be found...oh oh oh...I know.....he is a republican and he spews hate and lies about the democrats and kisses republican butt.
Maybe Flake will actually stop supporting the Republicans' war on the environment and will actually come to realize that wildness and wilderness is good.
Are humans really so insecure and vain that they can't even be on a deserted island without leaving some permanent mark – on animals no less!
Also – only a week?
MORE BULL CRAP. not inhabitated, then who took the pic. Just another JOKE.
