Liberal group launches campaign to close Guantanamo

A new ad out Tuesday urges Congress to close to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
A new ad out Tuesday urges Congress to close to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A coalition of retired generals and liberal activists joined forces Tuesday launching a $100,000 ad campaign - and multi-million dollar national grassroots effort - aimed at pressuring members of Congress to support President Obama's endeavor to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.

The 30-second spot, called "Close Gitmo Now," hit the airwaves Tuesday on network and cable television nationwide. It accuses Congress of being complacent in continuing policies from the Bush-Cheney administration.

"We want torture ended and we want to build the political base of support for those members of Congress who are willing to stand up," John Soltz, who heads the liberal veterans group VoteVets.org, told reporters on a conference-call Tuesday.

The "Campaign to Close Guantanamo," spearheaded by former Maine Rep. Tom Andrews, said they plan to move forward by targeting specific congressional districts in an attempt to restrain American's apprehension and possible fear of closing the prison. They did not say which districts they may focus on.

Update 7:43 p.m.: The Board of Directors of Keep America Safe, a conservative group focused on foreign policy issues, has responded in a statement to the new ad. "Guantanamo Bay is a secure, safe, humane facility where terrorists can be held, and when appropriate, tried. Americans expect their President to defend them from terrorists, not usher terrorists into the homeland," the group's directors said in a statement e-mailed to CNN.

Many here in Colorado have no problem with the Gitmo detainees being housed at the Supermax in Florence. We already have the Unabomber, Terry Nichols, Richard Reid and other badasses safely incarcerated here. If the inmates in Cuba deserve long-term lockup, we have beds waiting.

Close the Haliburton Hilton. It's a horrible stain on the American character (just like Cheney).

Ha.....even the lefties see that this man can't keep any promise he makes, unless he made a promise to bankrupt our country.

Isn't Keep America Safe Liz Cheney's new mouthpiece? Of course she doesn't want torture ended and innocent people released. They might tell tales about her daddy's cruelty, and that wouldn't look good on his resume.
I love how these people hide behind some fake political organization and pretend to care about us.

And I heard this morning that a whole 2% of the men released from Gitmo have resumed or started lives in terror groups. Seriously, that argument for keeping these guys in detention is absolutely as dumb as Bush's argument for starting the war that brought the US to her knees. Go away , Ms. Cheney!

Keep America Safe is more than just a name- it is a lifestyle. And, one that pays its members lucratively. You commie-lovin' Liberals have to love the fact these true Patriots have learned how to make millions off 9/11. Who-hoo, Capitalism!

Try them for war crimes and/or send them back home. Then, withdraw our 600,000 troops from 70% of the world's countries. Next, completely stop nation building and non-humanitarian aid. This will end terrorism and save lives. It is our present foreign policy that caused 9/11. We currently spend $1 trillion annual overseas on this mess per year....we would actually have a chance at balancing the budget.

Since this liberal group wants to close Gitmo, I say why not...... and what time do each of these liberals want the moving van in front of their house with a detainee. Heck, I'll even help move the detainee into one of these liberals houses.

I don't think people are fearful of them escaping the prisons. I think the fear may be coming from who is going to come to these communities to get them out of the prisons and what they are going to do to make that attempt!.........

I think we need to move them to an island for security, an island like Martha's Vinyard or Cattalina, or Alcetraz.

Closing Gitmo grabs headlines but the real issue is what is the Obama Administration doing to keep us safe from terrorists besides giving speeches around the world apologizing for the US defending its interests.

John Soltz's last agenda was to argue that Pat Tillman's death in Afghanistan was not a tragic friendly fire accident but because he was "ordered to be killed because he was becoming increasingly critical of the war"

(That's from his 2007 article on The Huffington Post and we all know they're a real news organization because the White House tells us so.)

If we are safe here in the US and our prisons are secure then why not bring them here? Are they saying our prisons are unsafe??? Every artical I have read today has had comments from the political far right. Never saw so many mean and hateful comments. These are the same people that want to keep Gitmo open. Does that tell you anything? Why should they care about human rights. These are the people that have complained about our president and called him a Nazi and worse . Just this week they where making remarks about the Jews being penny pinchers. Then told us they ment it in a nice way. Do they really think we can't see what they are doing? Just read the comments and tell me how nice their followers are ?

    Liberals are dangerously clueless.

    Obama is their leader.

Obama once made a statement that he likes to think before he talks. He didn't implement that policy until after he announced his decision to close Gitmo.

Let the prisoners there rot, there sole has already rotted away. Or let a liberal take them into their home.

Wow that's great. Let's make sure the terrorists get a civil trial with attorneys paid for by the tax payers, and then we can all act surprised when we are attacked again.

You people need to really think President Obama made a lot of promises and he have kept some and did what he said at least tried but let me remind you he cant only go as far as Congress let him if he could do what he want at the strike of a pen Health Care would have been passed by now. So stop baming the President for everything talk to your congressman.
