First lady dishes on fitness, french fries

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Michelle Obama may be a renowned fitness fiend - but she's equally devoted to her fries.

The first lady - who has spoken of her affection for the deep-fried staple - told a crowd of students Wednesday that her love affair with fast food had continued in the White House, where she's confessed sneaking out for an occasional run to the Five Guys burger joint.

"My favorite food in the whole wide world are french fries," Obama told a crowd of local students on the South Lawn of the White House during an event to promote healthy eating. "I love them. Dearly. Deeply. I have a good relationship with french fries and I would eat them every single day if I could. I really would."

Obama reminded the guests that healthy eating does not mean you have to resist all temptations.

"It's not about any absolute 'no's,'" she said. "It's just about striking a balance."

At the event - a "Healthy Kids Fair" - chefs and nutritionists from around the country demonstrated healthy cooking techniques.

She may allow herself some culinary indulgence, but the first lady said she had a strict weekday prohibition on another American favorite.

"In our household, no TV during school days, and only a couple of hours during the weekend," she said, encouraging the students to stay active. "I'm sorry. "But because the TV is off, my girls get up and they move. Even if they're pushing each other down, they're running."

We all should lead by example when it comes to our precious children by engaging them in exercise and good eating habits. Thanks First Lady for all your efforts in leading by example.

Randolph Carter, you are absolutely right about french fries with malt vinegar. It is not half bad. I tried it about a couple of years ago; but it is still not as good as just plain Henz Ketchup, the original fry dip. Have a nice day to you as well.

She's double-dutching!!! We have a First Lady that can actually double-dutch, this is no easy feat. I'm trying to think when was the last time that we had such a versatile First Lady. She's as comfortable amongst royalty as she is with Joe Blow, and she is physically fit. Just as importantly she seems to have the rare gift of making others feel comfortable and relaxed as evidenced by the warmth between her and HRH. Wow!

OMG, CNN must have gotten their top scoop to get this story! What is even more stomach-churning is the sheeple commenting on how "refreshing" this 1st lady is...what, was Laura Bush really Cruella DeVille or something?

Brings back memories when I was a kid playing outside. We have a great First Lady. Oh this story made me so hungry. For all of you that constantly criticize The President and First Lady get off the computer and play with your kids. Do what some of us do to contribute to society, it will make you feel better. Remember there is always someone worse off than you are. And to some of you I want to remind you we are all living in the greatest country in the World.

Ummmm-funny, On October 15th she signed a receipt for a lunch at the Waldorf Astoria for over $447 dollars for 2 lobsters, oysters, a bottle of champagn and a tip of $68 , she needs to stick to French fries like the rest of us peasants.

Eating mostly healthy? Turning off the TV and encouraging the kids to excel in school? This is just all part of her husband's socialist agenda, don't kid yourselves all you "real Americans!"

Way to go Mrs. Obama. You are truely a breath of fresh air. You let the world know you are a real person and mom with real concerns about our children's health. Yes the so called "no-no" foods are fine in moderation. But excerise is very important. Keep up the good work. YOU ROCK!!!!!!!

People are entitled to their opinions, but I think if CNN decides to put such a light-hearted story (which by the way is health related) we should all give the lady some credit for what she is doing.

OK - articles like this are the very reason stations like Fox are on the attack. This is real news? I like French fries, too but I wouldn't call that news worthy.

The picture is beautiful ! "double dutch" on the white house lawn – we shouldbe grateful to have such a refreshing first family bringing things to the white house never seen before.

All the critics will have egg on their face come this time next year, when you see the positive difference the Obamas will have made by then. Michelle and Barack are two of the hardest working people I have ever seen.

Five Guys do indeed have some very good fries. They cook them with skin on and they are indeed tasty. Five Guys has some of the best burgers in the world too. :)

She's one of the finest first ladies we've ever had in this country. Smart, caring, strong, independent - such a change from what we had!

And don't worry - it's okay to have french fries every now and then. :) Thank goodness we've got a president who won't do something stupid and call them "freedom fries."
