Cheney hammers 'afraid' Obama on national security

Cheney received the Center for Security Policy's Keeper of the Flame award Wednesday night .

(CNN) - After a summer in which Dick Cheney dialed back his attacks on President Obama's national security polices, the former vice president told a conservative gathering Wednesday that the Obama administration had damaged America's relationship with key allies, dangerously wavered in Afghanistan, undermined progress in Iraq, and intentionally sabotaged the Bush administration's national security legacy.

In the hard-hitting and wide-ranging speech at Center for Security policy, Cheney targeted the new administration's decision-making process on how to proceed in Afghanistan, saying Obama has failed to give troops on the ground a clear mission or defined goals, and appeared "afraid to make a decision."

"The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger," Cheney said. "Make no mistake, signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our adversaries."

Cheney also targeted White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who suggested to CNN's John King on "State of the Union" on Sunday that the previous administration had failed to adequately assess conditions in Afghanistan before committing troops there.

Let me get this straight, Obama takes the Bush/Cheney plan, tells Bush not to release it, then they claim Bush didn't have a plan and then he uses Bush's own plan as the new plan. Obama insults Bush and Cheney and blame them for the Afghanistan problems even though he's been in office now 10 months? Now he is surprised that Cheney tattled on him and he's surprised that both the far right and the far left are mad at him.....President Obama just doesn't get it.

Did president Obama have someone do his homework for him at Harvard too?

No, Dick, YOU have hurt our relationships with allies and emboldened the enemy. You can't just spend 8 years making a mess of international relations and then pass all the blame to the next guy.

Mr. Cheney was "afraid" to serve his country in Vietnam. He let others serve and die in the brave service of their country for him. Five deferments. 'Nuff said!

Darth Vader needs to crawl back in his hole and shut up. No one is interested in what you have to say. You were one of the main reasons why this country is in the dumps the way it is right now. You have no room to pass judgment on anyone in the current government. Where was all the big talk a few years ago when you had your hand up the puppet (Bush's) back.

Obama is cleaning up YOUR mess. The least you could do is show him a little respect. Lets not forget, 911 happened on your watch, the Lie in Iraq, your watch. You're done. (Where's my fork!)

Cheney, maybe he should follow your lead, like you did with Fallujah in the Summer-Winter of 2004, and hold off the offensive until AFTER the elections. Meanwhile hundreds of US casualties mounted because of your indecision.

Why are we taking our cues on military strategy from Cheney? A guy who couldn't win in Iraq or Afghanistan?

Cheney's strategy is to bully and kill other people as long as he and others like him don't have to serve in the military. Remember-he had a record 5 deferments and didn't serve because he "had other priorities."

What Mr. Cheney calls 'dithering' is what I call 'consideration'.
Who would know more about 'damaging America's relationship with key allies' than Mr. Cheney.

Maybe is more time had been taken 'dithering' in the Bush administration, President Obama would not now have to be put into such difficult decision-making.

I can only speak for one American and that is myself. I am so glad I have a President who "dithers" rather than one who invades a country under false pretenses and on an impulse. I would rather he dither than have us lose our children to a non-winnable cause. Which in turn makes me so happy Cheney (the war monger and fear spreader) is no longer part of any administration.

Takes a lot of courage for a draft dodger to imply the President is afraid to deploy more troops. Fear didn't have a thing to do with Bush and Cheney sending troops into the current quagmires. Blame that on plain old weak mindedness, greed, and a complete disregard for the American service member. We should never send our troops into elective conflicts. Cheney dodged our previous elective conflict (Vietnam), he has no right to comment on the current one, unless it's to apologize to the 4500+ dead American service members killed so far in Iraq

How can a general know how many troops he needs until a specific goal is decided? Almost every general never has enough troops. Look at Cheney's goals for Iraq.

    1. Our goal is to get rid of WMD's
    2. Oh, wait a minute, there are no WMD's so our goal is to get Saddam?
    3. Oh wait, we have Saddam, let's get into nation building.

Number 3 is what he wanted all along, but could not reveal that to the American people, because that is wrong.

Book smarts no common sense, pretty typical, except this man is trying to run the country and is in way over his head without a clue how to fix things. President Obama has kept us safer longer than the Bush-Cheney clan. Bush was in office about 7 1/2 months when the worst attack in America happened on their watch. President Obama has now been in office nine months. Go away, Cheney, and spend time with your family or shooting friends.

We voted your party out because we were tired of people like you. Can you please have a slightest dignity to show your fellow contry men and women some respect and shut up? But then again, dignity is not something you have...who am I kidding?

He and Bush almost destroyed our country, brought on hate for our country from the rest of the world, are responsible for more terrorists and terrorists groups being created due their actions and, we have
no idea of how much damage they did in secrecy.

I should preface this by stating yes I voted for Obama but no I do not agree with all his policies. That being said, I find it great that the POTUS is thinking before acting. Looking at it throughly before putting more lives in danger. Cheney ignored Afghanastan so he and Bush could go into Iraq. Something they wanted to do even before elected. Perhaps if we would have thought first all of our troops could be out of war zones now. Cheney was able to morph Sadam into Bin Laden in the minds of many, That was extremely dangerous and has put us and our brave soldiers at greater risk. So please Mr. President. don't have a knee jerk reaction. Think things through but also do not waste time. There is a balance between thoughtful and knee jerk actions.

He would much rather fly to Amsterdam, salsa at the white house on Latino Night, attend 22 fundraisers, have date nite paris, date nite new york, or vacation at martha's vineyard all on the tax payer's dime, while our brave men and women are dying from his indecision in afganistan.

If it's an idea that doesn't play well in the press, it's someone else's dumb idea.

The real question here is motivation. Cheney doesn't do this kind of thing for America, for our President, or with any intention of improving the situation. We know he has no personal courage, but is the standard chicken hawk that doesn't fight but wants to make others fight. My guess is that his primary concern right now is the safety of his defense contractor investments.

When are Bush and Cheney going to be charged with crimes against humanity? 9/11 was one of the worst terrorist attacks this world has ever seen, and I mourn those 3000+ people who were murdered. But I also mourn the loss of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Afgani citizens who died under the watch of the Bush administration. These 2 should be tried as criminals.

Why is Dick Cheney not in jail for war crimes? And why does he have any creditibility at all when he is the very man who outed a CIA operative(isn't that concidered treson and punishment is hanging?), bullied the government into invading a country (that would be Iraq) killed millions of innocent people, and profitted billions from that war via Haliburton. I can't wait for the Obama admin to turn the gaze toward him and put him on the spot just like all the other right wing nut jobs. Typical of Cheney, start some noise to distract from the real issues that he and his facist buddies started. Let's get back to mopping up the mess on Wall Street and Health Care. Cheney, shut up and get a mop!

Once again, Prick Cheney is spewing his typical fear mongering bull like he did for the last 8 years. I'd like for him to really elaborate on how the Obama administration has made us less safe. And what he's doing with Afghanistan is trying to figure out a way to do what's right. Working with the generals, figuring out troop numbers, etc. Unlike you and Georgy boy did, that's why our military hates you and you suck!

Yeah right, Obama's really messing up in Afghanistan the nine months he's been in office. Nothing like the seven years of efficiency and success we experienced there during the Dick and W show.

We should start a fund for a one-way airline ticket (well, guess that'd have to be reimbursement for a US military flight) to get Dick to that lovely vacation spot, Iraq, that he was so crucial in developing... He could go there, live the good life, and be their ex-VP.

Damaged relationships with key allies ? Dude your administrtion did the damage. Obama is trying to fix the damage of the past 8 yrs. Undermine Iraq ? Obama has praised the military leaders and hasn't touch Iraq, except to say he is still on track to pull troops out. And as for the question of damaging your security legacy ? what legacy, you yourself admited that torture was used. Hundreds of nations signed and abide by the Geneva convention. So you can blame Obama for this. It's like saying you broke the law and you want obama to do the prison time, sorry DICK, It may be best if you and your daughter just walk away

Perfect opportunity to clean up the federal deficit. Cheney vs Obama….$199 pay preview cage match…we could wipe out that 10 Trillion and maybe have some left for a COLA increase for the AARP members, extent the 8K tax credit for first time home buyers and extent the unemployment benefits to 104 weeks and include a COBRA break…..as usual nothing for the working middle class folks that are paying for everything in the first place

No Dick! You are WRONG! Our biggest allies are in Europe and Obama is winning them back hand over fist. YOU are the one who damaged our national security with your "go it alone" policies... THAT is what alienated our BEST allies from us and Obama is doing nothing more then fixing YOUR MESS!

Thank god we have term laws so these people couldn't steal a third term in office!

Dick Cheney did not run for pres., supposedly because of his age and health. I believe it was because he would have lost, and if he did not lose, would have been as big a failure as Bush before him. He is much happier carping about the new direction that the American people have chosen. Ignore him and (perhaps) he will gooooooooo awaaaaaaay!

Cheney was one of the best Vice Presidents we have ever had. He knew how to keep America safe and fight a war. This bozo in the White House now, and many bozos on this site as well, know nothing about keeping America safe and would rather run with our tails between our legs. Liberal Democrats will be the death of America.

Of course Obama is afraid. He enjoys the media spotlight and can't make a decision. Obama's sending out his bully henchmen to scare anyone who don't agree with him is a prime example. Bush may have sent troops in but Obama has nothing to help them. Either give them what they need or pull them out. Obama to busy jetting around on vacation and doing campaigning to handle business. At least Cheney has the nerve to speak the truth about the liberal messiah.

Right and going in iraq did not undermine the afghan war, someone needs to clean this mess, and it can't be done in 10 months!

Cheney, why don't you just shut up! Most of us are sick and tired of your nasty snarky face and your saying that President Obama is "afraid" is just another attempt to get your face in the news. CNN is becoming another "opinion" network rather than acttually reporting real news.

These statements from Cheney are completely infactual. How can Cheney criticize Obama taking time to formualte an actual goal and deliberate strategy in Afghanistan after 8 years of inaction ,neglect and distraction (iraq) on the Afghanistan front in his own administration? Oh yeah, and i'm sure the Bush administration did nothing to harm our image abroad.
