Gibbs hits back at Cheney

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticism from Dick Cheney.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticism from Dick Cheney.

(CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticisms from Dick Cheney, and suggested the Bush administration did not send U.S. troops into foreign conflicts responsibly.

"What Vice President Cheney calls 'dithering,' President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and to the American public," Gibbs said. "I think we've all seen what happens when someone doesn't take that responsibility seriously."

Gibbs' comments come a day after the former vice president issued a blistering a wide-ranging critique of the Obama administration's foreign policy, saying Obama appears "afraid to make a decision" when it comes to troop levels in Afghanistan, and the president's indecision is "hurt[ing] our allies and emboldening our adversaries."

In his comments Thursday, Gibbs said the delay over a troop decision in Afghanistan is largely due to the fact the Bush administration did not adequately assess the conditions in the country ahead of sending troops there.

"I think it is a curious comment," Gibbs also said, "I think it is pretty safe to say that the vice president was for seven years not focused on Afghanistan. Even more curious given the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House including the vice president's for more than eight months - a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

"I find it interesting that he's blaming us for something that he didn't see fit to do over, best I can tell, seven years of a war in Afghanistan," he added.

"Afraid to make a decision," huh? Suddenly the hold Cheney had over poor hapless hopeless George W. Bush becomes clear. Just a little threat to undermine The Decider's macho tough guy pose and suddenly, wham!, two unwinnable wars and our civil liberties in tatters, coming right up!

Thank God President Obama has too much intelligence and too much character to be baited by this ridiculous schoolyard talk.

It seems to me that Cheney is afraid of going to jail!! Cheney is always ready to kill people.. even our own troops. This guy was profiting from the wars going on with his stake in Halliburton. It scares me that this guy is so war hungry! How about we send his daughter?

DITTO! Cheney had his chance and DID NOTHING in Afganistan! His administration concentrated on OIL RICH Iraq! They spent 8 years without putting an end to either war! Who's dithering????????? Your term is over, Cheney! Go back in your hideout and stay there!

Amen! Conserva-bots know this is the truth, they just can't bring themselves to admit it. Too much pride- a pride that has slowly been on a decline since the Bush used their ignorance to run this country into the ground.

"the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House including the vice president's for more than eight months – a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

You silly GOPers can shut up now. All the Cheneybot really accomplished was yet another battle lost by the GOP with their old nemesis irony. The only thing his comment sined a light on was his own fear.

The Cheney family has no credibility. They are fear mongers who have never taken responsibility for their actions/inactions.

Dick Cheney is too old, he is out of his mind. He does not know what he is saying. He has bad habit to blaming President Obama and his administration. American people don't pay any attention what he is saying.

Dick Cheney and the Bush administration are the REAL terrorist with ties thinking that it makes it okay to attack a sovereign nation.

I wonder who had been trainning all those troops and police in Afghanistan, and building the roads, and water, and schools. Also, they forgot about the first election and the new constitution that was drafted during the Bush's years.
    Oh!, I see!
Obama arrived and he did it!
Only a liar is able to claim that the Bush administration didn't do anything in Afghanistan.
It is not doubt that this WH is being run by a pathetic group of liars.

    Hooray for Robert Gibbs.

Maybe if Bush/Cheney had applied some thought to our invasion of Iraq we could have avoided unnecessary death and destruction.

It is about time we have a president who thinks rather than reacting in a knee jerk fashion.

Why is Cheney so afraid of thought?

GO GIBBS! The fact that we did almost nothing to progress the situation in Afghanistan for the entire time that Bush/Cheney were in charge makes VP Cheney's comments so utterly ridiculous that I spit my water out reading what he said. I'm glad the White House called him out on his crazy comments.

Thank you Gibbs! Cheney needs to go back to his 'undisclosed location" or face a trial for war crimes.

Once again, it's all Bush's fault! Isnt it so refreshing to know that the individuals occupying the WH now, and making the decisisons, wait a minute have they made any decisions, are so much smarter than Bush's people! All we still get out of the WH is rhetoric, and non-senical BS with a capitol BS. Let's wait a little longer, no let's wait a lot longer before we make a decision on Afghanistan, maybe if we wait long enough Odumbo will not have to make a decision, maybe the make good fairy will help out and make the issue go away. This guy's Cindarella pumpkin ride is about over. A continued thanks o all who put this panty waste in office!!

    Well said Gibbs...

What nerve! Dick is one of the worst people ever!

I can see his daughter now coming to the rescue to try to clean up what her dad and the Bush administration didn't do....

I'm so tired of seeing her too...

You had 8 years now go away! Your administration single handily brought down this country (financially (the Great Recession), security wise (torture was a recruiting tool and they are still out there recruiting and so was the both wars), reputation wise (I'm the decider! Wiretaping, going at it alone etc..) and morally(stealing the election in the first place! Gore won but Bush brother said "not" and all went away).

The war is Obama's responsibility now. We need to MoveOn from Bush Bashing and start making decisions. President Obama needs to stop blaming the previous administration and start solving problems, stop whining about FOX, and not freak out every time he is criticized.

  21. Puppet Man Gibbs

Obama and Emmanuel wind up Gibbs and send him out to talk about things he knows nothing about. Where is our President? Why cannot he address the commanders in the field? Why can't Obama tell us why there has been no action taken and no decisions made?

The real pathetic part of this story is that Obama is still blaming Bush -- Americans now know this is rubbish. The fact is the military commanders in the field have been begging for more support from Obama, and Obama cannot make up his mind. Obama is suffering shell shock – he is way over his head - Thank God and God Bless Dick Cheney – he at least is looking out for America's security while Obama hides in his office

Bill Clinton and Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton had Obama pegged right during the campaign - When that hot red phone rings at 3 AM in the oval office you want somebody to answer that can make a decision - not a recording from Gibbs that says," I don't know – that is George Bush's fault"

After Eight years of ignoring Afghanistan, AFTER he and his co-partner in crime sent troops there......Cheney suddenly cares? Kind of like he suddenly got patriotic, but only AFTER avoiding the draft FIVE times.

Cheney: The most hypocritical DIRT bag in the history of humanity, with Hitler running a distant third (Bush in solid second position).

This sounds worse than children, the Obama and Bush administration, each blames the other, and no one wants to take responsibility for anything. How long can Obama continue to blame the previous administration? I am really getting sick of hearing this whining blame game.

Gibbs is a waffling, stuttering boob...I cannot understand how someone with his lack of competence and speaking skills gets to be a "spokesman...," especially for the president. Unless, Obama sought after someone who's a worse public speaker than he is. Cheney would slice and dice either Obama or Gibbs...or anyone else in this charade of an administration in any debate. Gibbs is only the master of avoiding the answers to questions that everyone wants to hear; he lathers on this whitewash that the American people just aren't buying, and he thinks they are.....I'll be glad when Obama's done, so we can avoid seeing this bumbling bozo...

Yeah, call him out on it. The American people can see Cheney is an idiot, to bad he can't see it for himself, although it is difficult to do if you only surround yourself with the same narrow-minded thinking people like yourself.
