Gibbs hits back at Cheney

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticism from Dick Cheney.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticism from Dick Cheney.

(CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticisms from Dick Cheney, and suggested the Bush administration did not send U.S. troops into foreign conflicts responsibly.

"What Vice President Cheney calls 'dithering,' President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and to the American public," Gibbs said. "I think we've all seen what happens when someone doesn't take that responsibility seriously."

Gibbs' comments come a day after the former vice president issued a blistering a wide-ranging critique of the Obama administration's foreign policy, saying Obama appears "afraid to make a decision" when it comes to troop levels in Afghanistan, and the president's indecision is "hurt[ing] our allies and emboldening our adversaries."

In his comments Thursday, Gibbs said the delay over a troop decision in Afghanistan is largely due to the fact the Bush administration did not adequately assess the conditions in the country ahead of sending troops there.

"I think it is a curious comment," Gibbs also said, "I think it is pretty safe to say that the vice president was for seven years not focused on Afghanistan. Even more curious given the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House including the vice president's for more than eight months - a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

"I find it interesting that he's blaming us for something that he didn't see fit to do over, best I can tell, seven years of a war in Afghanistan," he added.

Cheney, please reserve your comments for your mirror in the privacy of your own home.

Then you will be addressing the only person that cares.

    Got it?

I am starting to think the dumbing down of America is complete. We have a brilliant, thoughtful president in President Obama but it seems whatever he does, the neo-con warmongers, conservative "christians" (I use the term christian loosely because their actions are not very christian like) find fault with whatever he does.

We are lucky to have someone like him as our president. Even the world recognizes this – what is wrong with Americans? I think the dumbing down is complete.

Thank you Gibbs for telling Cheny how it is. There is still so much left over from the past administration that is being held against the administration of today. 8 years of terrible and irresponsible decisions being made are not going to be cleared up in 10 months and they are not going to be cleared up on the time tables of the previous administration!

I think we've all heard enough about the "Party Bashing" between both parties of late. I'm fed up with the finger pointing that's going on with the present administration these days. I don't care if Fox is a TV Commentary program, or a news program. I don't care if the Bush administration is responsible for all the problems that we're experiencing today. The current administration needs to spend less time trying to rebuke comments by former VPs and other staff, and start to focus on the current issues at hand, and DEAL with them. We expected change with the new administration, but the only change I've seen so far is taking sweet time to accomplish anything!

    Mr. Cheney,
FEAR is what got this country into the huge mess it is in right now. After 9/11 our country was astounded by the hate shown in our land; and eventually hate took over our very own country. And that very hate led us to FEAR everyone and everything that is "Middle Eastern." Not all Muslims are evil, and not all Muslim Countries are evil; but our FEAR led us to do things without using our Religious and Democratic principles on which this great country was founded. I am happy that our President is taking the time to figure our the mess we are in and how we are going to expend our very brave military that will benefit our country in the long run. We are a very smart country, and we must be willing to use our "smartness" to our best advantage. Please Mr. Cheney, consider all the people that will be affected by an illogical war plan.

It's pretty funny when you hear criticisms from people like Dick Cheney who had what five deferments(?) so he wouldn't have to fight in Vietnam and he has the nerve to call other people afraid while he has no problem sending other people's children into combat. Dick, you and your buddies had your chance to run this country and you ran it into the ground, go and enjoy your "retirement" and go make some more money with Haliburton and go hunting with your buddies. Leave the running of the government to your successors. John Reith Jr.

Cant blame bush on this one porkey. Owhiner is afraid to make a decision. Bush and cheney have nothing to do with him acting like a college kid for a party while we have men and woman being murdered over there.

It's hard to be serious about Mr. Cheney's comments when he was the one who had other priorities during the Viet Nam Era and received several draft deferments.

Robert Gibbs is like Pinocchio insisting he's really a honest little boy. Watch out for the nose. Fifty years from now, everything will still be someone else's fault as far as this White House is concerned.

Cheney is a dangerous fool. He screwed up royally in our foreign wars and - like the rest of the Bush Administration - is too puny of a man to take responsibility for any of it.

It's astounding the mess Cheney and Co. left behind.

Dick Cheney is a opionated and disguting man. He is a war profiteer(Haliburton) with his no bid contracts awarded to the company he headed. KBR, a subsidary of Haliburton is reponsible for the deaths by electrocution of American Servicemen while taking showers due to sloppy and uninspected electrical work.

He should be prosecuted for high crimes against the United Staes of America.

I'm wondering if the request for an incresase in troops sat on the Ex V.P.'s desk right alongside the warning for 9/11.....unread and unaddressed by our security expert Dick Cheney
