WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Republican Party's favorable rating among Americans is at lowest level in at least a decade, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say they have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, with 54 percent viewing the GOP negatively.

According to the poll, 53 percent have a positive opinion of the Democratic Party, with 41 percent holding an unfavorable view. The survey indicates that favorable ratings for the Democrats have dropped 5 points since February, with the Republican number slipping 3 points.

"The Republican party may still be battling the legacy left to them by George W. Bush," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "They have also spent a lot of time in 2009 working against Democratic proposals. That hasn't left them a lot of time so far this year to present a positive, post-Bush message. Of course, there is still plenty of time for them to do so before the 2010 midterms."

Nearly seven in ten people questioned say they disapprove of how Congress is handling its job, with 29 percent saying they approve. That's a drop of 6 points in the approval since April.

"That animus toward Congress as a whole naturally spills over into attitudes toward the congressional party leadership. Just one in three approve of how the GOP leaders in Congress are handling their job; only 38 percent approve of what the Democratic leaders have done," adds Holland.

What does this mean for the 2010 elections, when all of the House and 36 Senate seats are up for grabs?

"The problem for Democrats is that the midterm elections are going to be about the Democratic Congress," says Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report.

While next year's contests will partially be a referendum on President Barack Obama, who remains personally popular, at the end of the day it's the Democrats who control Congress who are on the ballot.

"If Congress continues to be unpopular, it will give Republicans a message to use against those Democrats," adds Rothenberg.

"Should the numbers should hold into next year, Congressional democrats would do well to limit references to Congress and see if the president might be available for a drop by in the districts," says CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley.

The CNN Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted October 16-18, with 1,038 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Hmmm . . . So this is what a CNN blog looks like.
Lots of Maobama votes in the house.

Yeah those Bush years were really terrible. Lots of jobs and economic growth and all those terrorist attacks that were foiled. Yep, those were some tough times. That BOOSH, he shore wuz EVIL!!!

Good things ol' Barney and Nan took over congress in 06 so they
straightened things out. Boy things are really great now!!

Go Maobama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a third party that is trully conservative. The GOP has become liberal lite.

JS007   October 23rd, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Wow, I'm surprised they are as high as they are. All the GOP has done is shill for corporations and sabotage EVERY single thing Obama, a very popular President, is trying to do. Even Bush wasn't 100% wrong, so it's obvious that the GOP puts politics and special interests above the well-being of the America people.

The Party of No = The Party of Nobody   October 23rd, 2009 1:57 pm ET

And now with their new "Conservative Party" splitting the Republican vote even more they are going to lose, lose, lose. The more that Cheney (and his bitter little girl), Palin, Limbaugh, Beck & Hannity keep running off at the mouth, the more support they lose! I love it! Keep talkin' losers . . ..keep talkin'

David   October 23rd, 2009 1:57 pm ET

One word to describe this poll....HOGWASH! The government-run media has now resorted to distorting poll numbers, over-sampling to support a pre-determined outcome and phrasing questions in such a biased manner that even political campaigns would be embarrassed. Ladies and gentlemen...let's do something unique here...think. If more than 70 percent DISAPPROVE of the job of the Democratic Congress, is it even logical to suggest that Democrats have a higher degree of support? Is that why Bob McDonnell will be the next Governor of Virginia and Chris Christie the next Governor of New Jersey? Both Republicans in states carried by the Democrats. I just want to know what flavor of Kool-Aid these people are drinking.

It's to be expected from a party:

1.Void of Ideas
2.That has no Cohesive message other than "NO"
3.Never follow on the promises/platform they run on

It will continue to go lower ... if they continue this trend

Lanae   October 23rd, 2009 1:53 pm ET

GOP is toast in 2010 and 2012. They have lost every single demographic and race accept Seniors 65-up and caucasians. They lost 18-40 group, 41-54 age group. They lost hispanics, gays, blacks, asians, women. They have ran everyone away with their divisive rhetoric and fearmongering. The country is changing and they refuse to change with it so they are being led by racist teabaggers who claim they are the face of the party. They are becoming a southern regional party who can't win anywhere else. All the states they win are small red states and 1 big state which is texas, and they will eventually lose that state because of the explosion of hispanics. They are lost cause and it couldn't have happened to a deserving party.

GOP =

1. Defunct.
2. Useless.
3. Misleading.
4. Low I.Q. Politicians.
5. Fake not Real.
6. Hypocrites
7. Feudalistic Ideologies.
8. Party of No.
9. Warmongers.

Poll results always depend on the questions. The Republican party of the present is about as irrelevant as they were in 1993, and are as out of power as the Democrats were in 2004.

glib lib   October 23rd, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Repubs seem to gloat over falling Democrat poll numbers. Somebody want to tell these idiots that their republican numbers are even worse! The problem people have with dems right now is they keep trying to get republican support. Republicans will not agree to anything that doesn't include cutting taxes for the rich, dictating who gets married to who, and every citizen in this country, young and old, owning a gun. Democrats, do what the country voted you in for and forget about these childish, POUTING republicans!

John Michael McCleese   October 23rd, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Both parties are the SAME. They are just puppets for the good old boys on Wall Street or "special interest" groups. Where is Ross Perot when you need him? Bush-Cheney, Iraq, no WMD, Katrina (fly over), tax breaks for the wealthy, Halliburton, pharmaceutical companies writing Medicaid benefit drug programs, Obama bailing out Chrysler, GM, Wall Street (with my money). God, will it ever end. Oh, I almost forgot, NAFTA, CAFTA, steroid use by major league ball players. I have to stop, I am getting nauseous.

hanes   October 23rd, 2009 1:47 pm ET

....strange how the GOP favorable ratings tends to move in unison with the media's favorable ratings. Since 90% of media are arms to the obama administration and join in their daily attacks of the GOP, what exactly does that say about these polls? lets see.....media marketing hate towards GOP....public buys the hate...thus materialized in the polls. Public instincts also recognized media bias and expressed as such...thus media has low ratings with public in polls.

oh yes, this is great for america!!! i can see a bright future indeed!!!

Eric   October 23rd, 2009 1:44 pm ET

there should be term limits for congressmen because this 365 days a year campaigning does nothing. All politicians care about is making money off our backs and keep their cushy jobs.

Jobless Recovery   October 23rd, 2009 1:44 pm ET

This doesn't surprise me...but how is anyone favorable of our chicago mob politician Obama? All he does is campaign and spend us into deficit oblivion. Obama is such a disappoinment. No wonder he has the biggest quarter drop in popularity in American history.

gary   October 23rd, 2009 1:42 pm ET

You bet the Republicans are the party of obstruction and 'no'. We obstruct every one of obama's push toward making our government more marxist and socialistic. We say 'no' to more government regulations, higher taxes, government entitlement programs, muzzling of the free press, etc. And the American people are catching on to this clown that they mistakenly trusted our country to. You libtards are suppose to be tolerant and welcome diversity; but the posts I have been reading are nothing but hateful.

Jobless Recovery   October 23rd, 2009 1:42 pm ET

When republicans act like republicans should, it will go up. Less government, eliminate deficit, and move rights to the states.
That's what republicans should be for. Country doesn't like democrat light.

Walter   October 23rd, 2009 1:38 pm ET

The Party of NO is such an appropriate tag to these floundering idiots.
Sara Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, George Bush & Dick Cheney, Pat Robertson and the new dunce republican whip Paul Ryan from Wisconsin...

NO, NO , NO... No substance, No ideas, NO strategy, NO compassion, NO to a great America....the Republicans have focused so much on wishing Obama's Waterloo, the "militant" gay agenda, the war machine mentality, as well as, protecting the wealthiest thieves on Wall Street and the Healthcare industry that they have totally and utterly lost the "workingman's republican vote" (an oxymoron if I ever heard one)

So long as the Republicans are represented but such IRRELEVANCE as the people mentioned above, they are doomed to the insignificance that they deserve...GOOD RIDDANCE and Good Night..... I hate to give them any help, but remember this motto in times of confusion "United We Stand, Divided We Fall"....perhaps its time to re-elvaluate there objectives to turn America into a 3rd World Country, obviously, the American Voters think otherwise.......

This is no surprise. What is surprising is that it took so long for the people to see that not only did the Emperor have no clothes, but the entire GOP Party is naked.

Everytime they open their mouths, it's a sex scandal, a racial slur, it's an out-of-touch bunch using fear instead of principles, using demagoguery instead of ideals. and using 'No' instead of new ideas.

Maybe Republicans wouldn't be in such bad shape if someone would make sure that former VP Cheney gets the memo that he missed letting him know that he is no longer in power and needs to shut the hell up and go back to his undisclosed location. This is one Grumpy Old Man and a disgrace to Grumpy Old Men at best.

Still not low enough for me. I like to see 0. Maybe then we can get another party that will come in and do for the people seeing the democrats can not keep it together to give us at least a public option in health care. We should be getting single payer non-profit universal health care now.

Our health should not be for profit.

BobNews   October 23rd, 2009 1:29 pm ET

The CNN poll has been completely discredited because they interviewed 36 % Democrats and only 20% Republicans and the rest Independents. Here are some valid polls from Rasmussen on the congress who are mostly Democrat.

Just one-out-of-four Americans (25%) have a favor opinion of members of Congress. Seventy-two percent (72%) view them unfavorably. There’s some intensity in that perception, too. Only four percent (4%) have a very favorable view of congressmen, while 37% view them very unfavorably.

Even 56% of Democrats have an unfavorable view of Congress although their party controls both the House and the Senate. Of course, their opposition pales next to the 86% of Republicans and 81% of adults not affiliated with either party who have an unfavorable opinion of Congress.

But then voters are evenly divided over whether a group of people randomly selected from the phone book would do a better job than the current Congress.

Roberto   October 23rd, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Anybody would be foolish to support the Republican party when your RNC chairman Michael Steele doesn't need them. But then again, Michael Steele and the GOP don't need supporters as long as they have the support of big corporation and one would be stupid not to recognize that.

Jamie   October 23rd, 2009 1:21 pm ET

Can't say this is a shock! Over the last decade they have: 1) gotten us bogged down in two wars, 2) double the deficit and completely drain budget surplus they came into, and 3) sat and played the fiddle, some even fostered it, while the financial and housing markets imploded!

get rid of the "money first", "our religion is the only way" ideas and maybe GOP can come back someday

Greg, San Francisco, CA   October 23rd, 2009 12:59 pm ET

The GOP will continue to be irrelevant as long as they remain the party of obstruction. Even Reagan and Tip O'Neill worked out their personal differences because they knew both the Dems and Reps are responsible for what happens in this country. Since Gingrich came to power in the 90's we have seen the GOP steadily become irrational, obstinate and increasingly irrelevant, culminating in the nadir of American politics, the GW Bush administration. Never again.

Jane   October 23rd, 2009 12:59 pm ET

No ideas + No bipartianship = Low ratings. Makes sense to me

Sniffit   October 23rd, 2009 12:58 pm ET

"Guess What? It is 10%."

And experts have said it would be 13%-15% right now but for the stimulus package.

" We were told this administration would be bi-partisan and would let go of "usual politics." That hasn't happened."

The GOP won't let it.

Steve   October 23rd, 2009 12:57 pm ET

The Republican party doesn't care about people. They are basically obstructionists on everything positive that comes before them. They have become known as the party of NO, NO and NO! In every election since 1960, I have voted Republican, but no longer. I don't believe I have left the party, the party has left me. Today, I call myself an independent. If Palin, Jindal, Steele, Greer, Limbaugh, Cheney are the best the party has to offer, GOD HELP US! We also need to have a clean sweep of Congress. Get rid of Pelosi, Reid, Franks and the rest of the idiots and lets elect people that will really care about the needs of people. No increase in Social Security benefits, but the idiots in Congress voted themselves a heft increase in salary!

Dave   October 23rd, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Who cares about Dems or Repubs? You noted that Congress has a 29% approval rating. It is going to be the independents; who determine the outcome of future elections.

phoenix86   October 23rd, 2009 12:57 pm ET

As the US lags in education and more and more individuals can no longer get by on their own, relying more on federal handouts; the results of the poll is not surprising.

Republicans are generally more individualistic and self reliant than democrats. This is a trend of decades and will only change when the education system improves.

WoW   October 23rd, 2009 12:55 pm ET

Easy Liberals. You are all a bunch of "Yes-Head Shaking" robots who listen and worship to everything the liberal media and Obama say.

This current Democratic White House passed a $780 billion stimulus plan of which we were told would keep unemployment at 8%. Guess What? It is 10%. We were told this administration would be bi-partisan and would let go of "usual politics." That hasn't happened. This administration has spent an enormous amount of money after we were told spending would be kept in a reasonable favor. It has been nothing but broken promise after broken promise. Things are heading in the wrong direction. The White House would rather argue with Fox News and campaign than fix the current problems going forward.

Half of you posters do not have a clue of what is going on. You just follow media rhetoric. Do your own research. Pick your own candidates. Do not get sucked into advertisements.

Emma   October 23rd, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Everything I read there is talk about a Democratic bloodbath at the polls. Is everyone crazy? The Republicans should be cautious in their gloating.........after all the polls say they have a lot to worry about.

How can another Republican get elected when no one knows their stance on any issue. What I hear is the word "NO" but never "this is what we will do." Do the Republicans think Americans are stupid? They have been able to use fear in the past to win, now that President Obama lead the polls in "who will protect America" and he gets high marks. What is left for the Republicans? The 2010 elections are going to be notable...............DEMOCRATS STILL IN POWER!

Justin   October 23rd, 2009 12:53 pm ET

Good stuff. How many people attended Cheney's latest 'speech' where he was awarded a statuette in a train station? Was it eight?

Either political party will always have about 30 percent of the population that will stay on the bus even if the leadership is driving it over a cliff.

Right now, the GOP bus is much closer to the edge. They need to change drivers or it's gonna be lights-out for many years ...

Grahame   October 23rd, 2009 12:53 pm ET

I really have a problem with this. How do you post a positive Bush message anyway?

And beside that how in the hell do thirty six percent of the population

Terry from West Texas   October 23rd, 2009 12:42 pm ET

It would be nice if Conservatism would just die. It has harmed America and the world for decades. The more time goes by, the more damage is done.

A small example. 40,000 people die every year due to lack of health insurance and many more suffer needlessly from preventable, curable, or treatable conditions. Since the Conservatives defeated the Clinton efforts to do something about this, that is about 700,000 deaths. That is 75 times the number of Americans that have been killed by terrorists since 9/11. So, it is reasonable to say that Conservatism is 75 times more dangerous to Americans than terrorism is.

Conservatism kills more Americans (by their determination to prevent our nation from solving its problems) than guns, street drugs, prescription drugs, automobile accidents, suicide, and alcohol. Tobacco kills more Americans than Conservatism. Conservatism and tobacco are America's worst habits.

Tram   October 23rd, 2009 12:41 pm ET

The GOP have proven time and again that they hate America, Americans and everyone else. Americans do NOT want people with that attitude representing them. We had eight years of it, and now the GOP is destroying itself. They're eating their own. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Get rid of them and let another party start up, maybe one that loves what America used to stand for - the America Bush and his people destroyed.

Mark   October 23rd, 2009 12:41 pm ET

It is far time that we get away from the idea that voting for a third party candidate is splitting the vote or throwing your vote away.

This is a free country and you should vote for whomever you believe to be the best candidate no matter the party.

Dan Holiday   October 23rd, 2009 12:41 pm ET

The GOP is fine. Trust me on this. The liberal party on the other hand is in trouble. Looks at polls on websites other than CNN. You will see the true feelings of the American people. You can try fooling yourselves into thinking that the GOP is dead and that the democrats are riding the high-horse, but in the end, you will see that it is just an illusion to make yourselves feel better.

Anyone but those liberal criminals in 2009, 2010, 2012.

Republicans I have 2 questions that I would like honest answers to.

1. Is there any "bad news" for the GOP that wasn't rigged or somehow falsified by objective news sites?

2. Is there any goods news that the Democrats can get without someone saying "they are in the tank for Obama"?

This is starting to get ridiculous. It's like if you read something you don't like, you are ready to bash it.

Ken in Pisgah Forest   October 23rd, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Being patriotic means you care about Americans, and the Republicans don't care about anything but their own greed. I am ashamed to say I used to be a Republican, but no more.

Republicans know employer based healthcare is dead because employers can no longer afford the cost, but they won't vote for anything because they want Obama to fail, and the Republican congressmen are afraid of their party leadership so they fall in line like sheep. The Democrats may not have the best answers, but they are trying to do something to fix this mess the medical system created.

Kathy   October 23rd, 2009 12:40 pm ET

The GOP, or the party of angry old white men, do not have that much in common with the vast majority of the changing electorate in this country. They are full of hate, selfish, and un-patriotic. They have NO ideas of how to make things better for the average American. They do care about how much money businesses like the healthcare industry can make, but care nothing about the average, struggling, middle class family. As far as I'm concerned they can continue to move further to the right and become less and less relevant. It will take a generation to clean up the mess Bush left, we need a break from them.

Well, they sullied this country forever by starting baseless wars and torturing people; they continue degrading themselves by voting against healthcare reform, voting pro-rape and anti-environment.
I'm surprised their approval rating isn't lower than 10%. Rep. Grayson is right, the Republican Party is the party of no, nothing, and soon, nobody.

Big Ed   October 23rd, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Looking at the 8 years of the Bush / Cheney monarchy, the condition they left our nation in, not to mention the borderline pathological and illogical (not to mention fact depleated) rants of Ruh Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and the like, there is no wonder that the GOP is in this position. They are so far removed from the everyday American and their concerns. The GOP is offering nothing to help this nation. "NO" is not a solution. "NO" is not a form of peace. "NO" is not an economic plan. Until they develop a comprehensive plan that benefits a broad section of Americans, they will continue to be kNOwn as the "Party of 'NO'"!

Peter s   October 23rd, 2009 12:39 pm ET

RIP GOP, your demise was long overdue!!, and please stop wasting time calling yourselves independent! down with GOP, Down with porridge baggers oops tea baggers!, Down with the token guy! your chairman, up with Rush limbaugh, Hannity and Becks!!

Adampowell, Londonderry   October 23rd, 2009 12:38 pm ET

They are still living in denial everyday of what they did to our Great nation USA 8 years Shame.

They can blame Bill Clinton, but question will always be if they could not fix anything for last 8 years when they were in power, what was excuse?.

GOP step back if you can not support United States America recovery for better direction.

China is the real threat to our great country not Democrats Administration, disrespecting US Presidency in joint session speech was step to far to giving foreign nation points.

American people are used to your "Fear Tactics and Lies", a good critic always have plans or opinion where is your plans for America?

Proud Member..Party of No   October 23rd, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Headline from the U.K. Telegraph today:

"Barack Obama sees worst poll rating drop in 50 years"

Of course, you won't see that in the liberal American press.

Really   October 23rd, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Wow, 1,000 people were polled. It must be true then. I am a conservative republican. I find that the liberal democrats are filled with too much hate and they are narrow sighted. I love how they spew hate towards individuals and make comments that aren't even relevent to the article. Reading the recent comments on multiple sites, it looks like the talking point is Dick Cheneys draft dodging bs. I saw a post about the rainy weather and someone had to go on about how Dick Cheney dodged the draft 5 times.

mario mtl ca   October 23rd, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Gops are done

seebofubar   October 23rd, 2009 12:35 pm ET

This is funny, this is the only poll that shows the GOP's numbers dropping. Gallop and Rasmussen both show exactly opposite. Who did you poll, illegal aliens? If you look at the demographics, the higher income, higher IQ, older, better educated, higher achieving Americans tend to be Republicans while most under achieving, low income, lower education Americans tend to be Democrats. As for me I'll hang with the winners, you guys can go whine with the loosers.

t22   October 23rd, 2009 12:34 pm ET

Well you've got more than half the country looking for government handouts as they've been promised by the President so it's no wonder. Then you've got the active campaign to squelch conservative speech and to vilify anyone who is a Republican. One of the first posters on here said it, they think Republicans are scum. Now I don't agree with many Democrats, especially on the important issues, but I don't think they are scum and not entitled to their opinion.

Give it time though. When unemployment gets worse and people realize they have to pay for their insurance because their employer no longer will, the hordes will come running back. Eventually people are going to realize they are better off with a job than with government handouts, especially when the government realizes it can no longer afford those handouts.

Rick CT   October 23rd, 2009 12:34 pm ET

So 53% approve of the Dems, yet only 29% approve of Congress, which is completely controlled and run by the Dems. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Nothing 'Stand Up' about Sen John Ensign (R-NV)   October 23rd, 2009 12:34 pm ET

The members of the Republican leadership don't even know what the Republican Party stands for any more.

Everyone seriously participating in the debate in the House and Senate over health care reform, for example, caucuses with the Democrats.

Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) made a sad attempt to stay relevant in the debate, but has failed.

Whether or not we get real health care reform, which must include a strong public health insurance option, is now entirely up to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada).

And if he fails as a leader of the Democratic Party, he's finished next year.

Willfull Ignorance Is The New/Old Drug In American Politics Today. Just From Some Of The Most Pathetic, Whiny, And Hypocritic People Of Popular Opinion. It's A Sad State Of Affairs When Republicans Offer Nothing But Doomsday Rhetoric When They Can't Get Their Way.

AP in Illinois   October 23rd, 2009 12:32 pm ET

It took 25 years for this country to finally wake up. It has been downhill for the GOP ever since Reagan left the White House. Anybody want to bet on the odds of this story showing up on Fox News?

Dale   October 23rd, 2009 12:32 pm ET

My mother, a Republican for sixty years told me that she is no longer a Repbulican. She said "Because Republicans don't care about people." She was referring to their complete and total lack of caring about the poor, the disabled and the disadvantaged. They care more for the unborn than the born. Probably because caring for the unborn doesn't cost them anything. Oh, and they also don't care about dead Iraqis, or basically anyone in the world that is not one of them them. There are no disenting Republicans... only RINO's.

J-STIZLE ( Oakland, Calif. )   October 23rd, 2009 12:31 pm ET

The Republican Party is destined to become smaller and smaller
every year. The demographics of America are changing ........ younger, more minorities, increasing gays/lesbians. This ain't 1959 , its 2009.
As much as Republicans long for the "so-called" good old days .... its
over. As an African American man ( age 55 ) , The so-called "good old
days" that Republicans , and other Americans remember ..... weren't
that good for us anyway !!!!!!!

Bubble of Sanity   October 23rd, 2009 12:31 pm ET

The Republican party has a - more or less - 50% approval rating. The Democratic dominated congress barely has a double digit approval rating.

What do these things mean? Nothing. Either one of them. Why? Because we never see the actual questions asked that get interpreted.

Had it been Republicans doing the survey, their approval would have been ridiculously high.

Surveys mean nothing. Just ask Dewey and Truman.

LIP   October 23rd, 2009 12:31 pm ET

These polls are all Bull. On one hand I congratulate CNN and all the other affiliates for standing up for freedom of speech and saying no to excluding Fox News from interviewing the pay czar. Perhaps something rubbed off Chevez when he shook hands with President Obama. Perhaps he caught a bug that makes you want to shut up anyone that disagrees with you.
So on the one hand I agree with CNN , but with regards to the popularity of the Republican party...it is still just as strong. It is just more difficult to hear them over all the noise the liberals are making with their demands for all the entitlement programs they are secretly launching behind closed doors.

worriedmom   October 23rd, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Hmm amazing that CNN doesn't say how low the Democrats ratings are. I have to laugh at all of you putting down the Republicans when your own party is destroying the country and eating their own! Talk about Republicans spewing hatred, i see that from the Democrats. Maybe i should clairfy that, there are some good Democrats and some good Republicans out there but the Liberals are all nuts!!! Talk about Un-American!
So CNN keep your Libs happy for now but soon they will be reaching into their medicine cabinets for their Valiums.

Pam   October 23rd, 2009 12:30 pm ET

If the GOP wants the public to start taking them seriously again, they need to tell people like Cheney and Palin to shut up and go sit in the corner like good little kids!
And then start focusing on someone with real intelligence and a real understanding of our world in the 21st century.

Proud Member..Party of No   October 23rd, 2009 12:29 pm ET

The GOP advantage over Democrats increased from two points to five in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 42% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 37% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent.

Support for Democrats dropped two points this week, while support for the GOP slightly increased.

Voters not affiliated with either party heavily favor the GOP, 40% to 23%.

Christian Values   October 23rd, 2009 12:28 pm ET

They seem to think outrageous comments and blocking progress will bring them votes. I’m scared that it will hurt us all!

I need to reassess...

Mike   October 23rd, 2009 12:27 pm ET

Do you have to do a poll to figure that out???? The party of NO have no idea of their own except criticizing someone else idea!

It must be greate to be a GOP congressman where you get paid six figure slary for doing nothing but criticize somone else idea.

B   October 23rd, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Big Surprise huh? They are basically obstructionists on everything positive that comes before them.

One would think that after eight years of moving the country backwards and losing the election that they would think about new ideas...

The party of NO !

Ted Tartaglia   October 23rd, 2009 12:26 pm ET

It is no wonder that the Repub party has such a low approval rate. They have done nothing positive in the last ten years. The Get Obama Party has done nothing but oppose, criticize, and obstruct. They bring nothing to the table. They have no credible ideas, no solutions, no nothing. Repubs focus on the drivel and hate spewing from Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck and their ilk. They seem to have lost the capability of rational thought and only parrot the propaganda they are spoon fed.

If Repubs have any hope of becoming relevant again, they must abandon the religious whackos who have taken over their party and return to the principles of Goldwater – a true conservatist.

Results of a CNN poll? Har,Har de Har Har!

floridian   October 23rd, 2009 12:24 pm ET

I find it amazing that in my 48 adult-years (21+) I have never been polled by any news organization/Rasmussen/or the like. Maybe it's because I spent 23+ years in the military, or maybe 'cause I am a registered Republican, or maybe because I am part of the older generation, or maybe because I live in the panhandle of Florida, or maybe whatever. My opinion - I find the Democratic party less favorable than the Republican party and I find neither party favorable. The main reason is that there are very few national politicians who, in my humble opinon, want to serve the people. The vast majority of them are in it to serve themselves. We have been heading downhill for many years and, unfortunately, many of the voting public find that type of behavior acceptable.

ronvan   October 23rd, 2009 12:22 pm ET

Republicans have done all of this by themselves! Allowing "Limburger" & the likes and "DICK HALLEBURTON CHENEY"
to make ANY comments, mostly outrageous & the typical scare tactics, without denouncing them or just telling them to go away, has been & continues to be a big part of their problem. Not to mention that at present, they do not have ANYONE to put at the head of the party that could take charge. And don't say McCain or Palin. BOTH ARE LOSERS!!!

Lori   October 23rd, 2009 12:21 pm ET

And the Republicans believe they can win national elections in the future? HA!

Hammerer   October 23rd, 2009 12:20 pm ET

The repubs are at their lowest rating in 25 years, what the poll does not say that the dems and congress as a whole are looked with the same trust.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   October 23rd, 2009 12:20 pm ET

If you have read the book, Conservatives without Consceince, then you know that they haven't given up some of their talking points and attitudes. They don't seem to be welcoming of many people. It seems that the unified party that Reagan built is almost fully torn apart by George W(oman) Bush and his "want to be a conservative" actions. It will take someone to a while to rebuild Reagan's coalition.

Death Panel Sarah   October 23rd, 2009 12:19 pm ET

Sir Elwayne- it is a random sampling.....of course, since only 25% of Americans want to be identified as Repuglicans, it is hard to find them to get their opinion.....ha, ha, boy, you just don't get it. Why don't they ask a Do-Do bird what it thinks.....because IT IS EXTINCT!!!!

William   October 23rd, 2009 12:17 pm ET

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was a Republican, before 8 years of George Bush, but I will be voting as an Independent until such a time that the Republicans return to there roots and endorse a true leader!

Doug, New Jersey   October 23rd, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Republicans represent morals, values, integrity, fairness, class, and fighting for all rights and freedoms for all Americans, not just the ones we agree with.

What do Democrats represent? I can't really capture such evil with words, all I can say is observe what goes on and how people act in the most Democrat areas of this country like Chicago.

Most Americans are good people with decency and try to live an honest life where they make a positive impact, not taking from others and hating them for having more than them or being more moral and honest than them. Theforefore most Americans are republicans not Democrats. 40% of this country is conservative, meaning off the bat that's 40% of Americans who are good people, only 20% say that they are mean-spirited, selfish, dishonest, violent takers who don't take responsiblity for their actions aka liberals.

true american   October 23rd, 2009 12:16 pm ET

gop and conservatists are virus of our society.

Zion   October 23rd, 2009 12:15 pm ET

I wish that the GOP of Reagan would return. I was one of the GOPers who was not radical enough for the base, therefore I left the party. Reagan, Buckley, Powell, these are people that the DEMS were afraid of. They were not afraid of the Palin's, Limbaughs, or the Becks.

cal   October 23rd, 2009 12:15 pm ET

The GOP is whats wrong with this country. They are selfish and only look out for the upper class americans. They don't care about the struggling middle class let alone those that's living in poverty. they are a bunch of ignorant name calling lying morons that has messed this country up the last 8 years and now want to blame President Obama for it. They had their chance and they blew it, now let this intellengent, well educated, and loved President clean up their mess, after all if anyone can do it President Obama can.

Skip   October 23rd, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Simple and plain I do not turst one single person in congress or goverment. Those elected are elected to represent all american people, but still we see them being bought by medical insurance companies and any one that will fill thier greedy pocket with money for another term in office. There is no partisan goverment except for the rich and greedy people of this great country. Its ok i'll live with it and may they all enjoy their time in HELL. For they are all traitors to the people of the united states.

theonceproudpartyofdumbasrocks   October 23rd, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Ouch!! That's too bad for all you frothing-at-the-mouth red-state hillbilly neo-tards. But don't let that stop you from wearing your panties in a bunch.

But the real concern for America should be: just what contaminated the genepool for 36% of its population so severly that they view FAILURE as success?

The only thing the Republican party is battling are the deluded hypoctrits that comprise its remnant base.

Grog in Ohio   October 23rd, 2009 12:14 pm ET

I fear lamenting the death of the GOP is a bit premature. There's plenty of time for them to come up with some irrelevant, nonsensical scare tactic by November, 2010.

stephen Pagnozzi   October 23rd, 2009 12:13 pm ET

Not surprised at all. In all my 61 years, I have never seen the party denegrate themselves to a shameful level. I have never seen such a parochial attitude, towards any kind of legislation put forth. Granted, you may be philosophically on the other side of the political pole, but my gosh, everything is a negative coming from them. Nothing at all constructinve, and when you have people such as Palin, Limbaugh, and Cheney at the top, it really makes you wonder. Actually, it makes me laugh, ones more incompetent than the other. I'm sure the "Republican's have someone in their ranks that can actually talk civil over the plethora of problems that the Obama administration inherited and is still trying to fix. Steve

lisa   October 23rd, 2009 12:10 pm ET

Not surprising. It'd be nice to see the Republicans stick their noses to the grind stones & buckle down & start working & adding constructive input where it's truly beneficial....but that's not the overall approach they've taken & sadly, I don't think they've realized how much this has been hurting them. It's a very embittered reaction...the reaction they've had to the election & the new administration. If Americans have to endure 4 years of this kind of back talk from the GOP, we're all going to be EXHAUSTED before it's all said & done!

shmeckel   October 23rd, 2009 12:10 pm ET

If you have a favorable view of either party you should have a psychological evaluation.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   October 23rd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

And it will continue to decline.

Expat American   October 23rd, 2009 12:09 pm ET

It's not low enough. Remember Republicans are the people who hang effigies of the President of the United States. These are Palin's 'Real Americans'; Country First Patriots who cheered when Bush ordered missiles aimed at Iraqi civilians during his failed 10 gallon cowboy shock and awe offensive. The global approval rating for Republicans and their voters couldn’t be any lower. At least that’s some good news.

Northeast   October 23rd, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Until the party stands up and acknowledges the extremists like Palin, Fox news, Rush, Wilson, Bachman etc., don't represent core Republican values they will continue to be less and less relevant to mainstream voters.

Albert Tusin   October 23rd, 2009 12:08 pm ET

Figures never lie and lairs always figure. I would like to see the questions used in this poll and how they were presented and to what samples base it was applied!

William   October 23rd, 2009 12:07 pm ET

The Republican party is so far off base and so far out of touch with what is left of there ranks, that Ronald Reagan is probably rolling over in his grave. They have no message, no direction and no leadership. The only conservative in 2008 field, Fred Thompson was abandoned by the party, and left to fend for himself, and the result was, well I think we all know, what we ended up with. The man who thought it was funny to joke about bombing Iran!

Eric   October 23rd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Ouch, it's cyclical anyway. Give it a few years for the party to rebuild and the dems to blow their power and it will turn around for the GOP.

Rob canuck   October 23rd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

From my view in Canada the GOP scares me and most of the rest of the world with their policies and radicalness. While they slam policies such as health care and belittle the countries that do have compassion, the only conclusion you can come to is that they do not care about ordinary people. The lies they espouse regarding health care is a disservice to your citizens. Oh by the way in Canada we started giving H1N1 vaccines two days ago and have no schools closed.

Anonymous   October 23rd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Already the book orders are being canceled, She will never ever stand up and account for her actions. She will soon be religated to signing cupcakes for her palinbot for $0.25 each.

It is right that the republicans pay because the previous administration mislead us into the Iraq war. That should send a message so it doesn't happen again in the future. It's still not enough punishment for some of us.

Reagan was wrong   October 23rd, 2009 12:06 pm ET

On the one hand, I remember the last 8 years so I really really really don't want the GOP to start messing things up again

On the other hand, with so many of our least educated and most heavily armed citizens already CONVINCED that 2010 will be the GOP's year, I am concerned about what their reaction might be should their ideal fantasy not come to pass.

Sir Elwayne   October 23rd, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Well, I'm suprized! Another CNN Poll saying that everybody loves the Democrats and hates the Republicans. What was the percentage of Demos versus Repubs in this poll?

Independent Senior in Bandon, Oregon   October 23rd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I don't think John McCain really understands that Americans don't think it is cool to trash the sitting president like he has been doing the past day or two, saying how "weak" the president is or telling the president what he should do or not do about Afghanistan.

McCain needs to fade to a memory.

Bren   October 23rd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Huh.....Funny.........The CNN poll is reflecting the opposite of what the unbiased, national polling centers such as Rasmussen, Gallup, etc. are saying. Based on the national polls-those who now consider themselves conservative/Republican are INCREASING. And, this is especially true amongst the Independents-as the majority of Independents no longer trust/support/approve of Obama, the Democrats, or any of their policies/plans-–and they do not approve of the direction that Obama and the Democrats are taking our country.

A 50-year Democrat no more. Now an independent with brains.   October 23rd, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Where are these polls taken certainly not in Texas. I've and now of the people I know have ever been phoned or asked what we think. I was a Democrat for 50 years. But, boy did I wise up in a hurry when they stary talking antiwar and after the Vietnam papers arrive on the scene with the likes of Kennedy, Johnson and the rest. These people are not for the lower classs. You OBAMA FOLLOWERS better wise up because you are the ones that are going to be falling down the chinmey with Obama'a health program. He's planning on trimming Medicarew to where it won'
t be accepted anywhere. Only part of the medical organizations accept it now. Wait until he trims the payments away.

Moderate Democrat   October 23rd, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Republicans have ALWAYS been scum and unpatriotic (just ask Cheney who wouldn't serve his country when he dodged the draft five times). Their policies are the cause of all suffering in this country as well as much of the suffering in other countries. They readily embrace mass genocide and only act 'christian' when it's convenient.

I pray for the day that jesus sends them where they belong. If that actually happens, Just a hint, bring marshmallows.
