JACKSONVILLE, Florida (CNN) - President Barack Obama said Monday that the 14 Americans killed in two helicopter crashes in Afghanistan "were doing this nation proud."

He said they "gave their lives ... to protect ours."

Ten Americans were killed in one incident and four were killed in another, according to NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

"Now, it is our duty, as a nation, to keep their memory alive in our hearts and to carry on their work, to take care of their families, to keep our country safe," Obama said, speaking at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville.

Nice sentiment, but I fail to see how flailing way in the desert sands 6 thousand miles from home with no apparent definable mission is helping anybody – except Halliburton. Bring the troops home!!

I don't want to hear any repuks come on here and say that Barack's indicision regarding sending more troops caused this by embolding our enemy. Barack is the greatest thing that has happened to our country and people should respect him instead of trying to destroy him.

I think it is time to bring our troops home. I appreciate what they have done for us. .I say no more killing of Americans . We are no safer now than we were 8 years ago-maybe less safe. Thank you George Bush.

No, Obama, YOUR job is to LEAD and stop dithering and bringing your political advisors to WAR COUNCIL meetings.

This was the war you said matter, Obozo! But you can't seem to pull your finger out and actually lead – it's all talk and hot air. GOD I wish we had Hillary in charge!

Perfect, Mr. President! NOW, get off your partying behind and MAKE a decision on sending troops to Afghanistan!! It has become all too apparent that you are waiting until AFTER the Nov 3rd elections...just so that the DemonRats won't suffer at the polls. Can you even box your way out of a paper bag? Find your arse with both hands? I doubt it. Sick and sad.....

    John F. Kennedy:
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country
We all know this quote from JFK, and even though we have heard this quote many times before, we often fail to realize what is actually means, in means of patriotism. When individuals think of patriotism, we often think of our soldiers, which they should be thought of as patriotic. We should thank them everyday for giving their lives, so that our's may be protected, but patriotism goes a lot deeper than that. It can extend to from making the ultimate sacrifice, dying for your country, to just doing a good deed for another American, and anyone else who needs help. For example, patriotism can be just serving your community (community service and voluteerism). We all have the ability to make a difference that will influence our country in a postive way in the future.

We have nothing to do in Afghanistan and these poor people lost their lives for nothing, just like in Iraq.

    Mr. President,
Infuriating Middle Eastern extremists is not keeping anyone safe. We need a way OUT of these countries. While I hate to say these soldiers died in vain, they have. We should not be involved in anything other than peacekeeping missions. When our drones are killing Afghan women and children, we are enabling the so-called 'enemy.'

Then get off your duff and order the troops that YOUR commander needs to protect the troops that are already there!

I wonder if the deaths could have been prevented---had Obama given the Generals the 40,000 troops that they requested/needed??? This was the deadliest day for US troops in Afghanistan in 4 years!!

EVERY day that Obama drags his feet regarding a decision in Afghanistan--it is placing our military men and women in increased danger. He is more concerned with playing political games--than he is the safety of our military in Afghanistan.

Either give the Generals the 40,000 troops that they requested/need--or bring them ALL home NOW!!

The increased troop levels in Afghanistan increases the chances that those in Afghanistan-–are able to defend themselves and stay safe. Through increased numbers--there is increased strength/power/control.

and might i add, that they [soldiers] were also the defenders of peace. it strikes me odd to think that there are people that , because this president "IS" getting the nobel peace prize for peace. that this means a direct halt or an outright "stand down" sign to the enemines of peace thur out the world. its being stated ; "now that the pres is getting the nobel prize for peace how does this look for him now to being a war-time president. well i would say to these people. in the face of defense for the rights of peace, civility and humanity around the globe, that people around this globe have laided down their lives for this same said truth. and to defend this truth. times will come when even a nobel peace winner must call on the defenders, of what is right to protect lives. "by any means nessecary". for peace and security around this world. and still stand for peace.

Taliban leaders don't attend late-night comedy shows; they don't waste time at the International Olympic Committee; they don't summon their military commanders for he only purpose of a photo-op; they don't leak details of their decision-making process; they don't organize Latin-dance parties; they don't attend lavish fundraisers; they don't go play golf while their troops die.

They are focused on one thing: defeating the enemy.

    They are succeeding.

  15. Does this mean he cares?

If he truly supports the military, then he needs to keep gays and lesbians out of the service. We can't afford to retrofit our ships and barracks to facilitate berthing for openly gay men/women.

Can you imagine the expense? What about the alternative. Allow openly gay men to bunk side by side with heterosexuals? It's not practical.

1..............Afghanistan and Iraq war need to be ended ASAP.
2..............40,000 more Troops to Afghanistan means Billions of Dollars of Extra Expenditure.
3..............Bush has Bankrupted America already. Where are we going to pay for this War from? We don't have Jobs, We don't have health care, We have lost our homes to Predatory Lending.
4.............. Republicans who suggest to send more troops should Donate their houses and 1 year salary for funding the troops.
5............. And Repbulicans need to Join and acutally be there in Afghanistan.
    6..............Just words are not enough.
7...............Republicans believe in Words, No Action. Last 8 years Republicans ruined America.
8...............Now they need to just Shut Up.

How about sending some reinforcements to help the other Americans serviing in Afghanistan?

Does anyone still think Obama knows what he is doing? No one is that naive.

It is Obamas duty to make some decisions on Afghanistan and quit stalling, while more of our soldiers die.

May these persons both military and law enforcement find favor in the sight of God, sleep well.

There are two senarios playing out here..either DEA has hit the heart of the drug land and is making a dent or they have discovered a wobbly link and were quieted. I pray the earlier.

    Go Navy!!!

Well, well, look at all the hypocrite right wing traitors criticizing the Commander in Chief during a war, "emboldening the enemy." Shameful. Using the death of servicemen to advance your mindless far right radical agenda. Treasonous scum.

These young men and women are dying in vain. There is absolutely no proof that fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are protecting us in the United States. It is all conjecture and circumstantial at best. Get the hell out of the Middle East except for advisory personnel. Let's protect our borders, not everyone elses.
