White House spokesman Robert Gibbs fires back at Cheney over troop levels in Afghanistan

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back at former Vice President Dick Cheney over troop levels in Afghanistan.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back at former Vice President Dick Cheney over troop levels in Afghanistan.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back at former Vice President Dick Cheney the day after Cheney said President Obama "seems afraid to make a decision" about a general's public plea for 40,000 more U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

"The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger," Cheney said in a speech at the Center for Security Policy on Oct. 21.

In his daily press briefing the next day, Gibbs said Cheney's comments were "curious" given that "the vice president was for seven years not focused on Afghanistan."

And, Gibbs said, the comments were "even more curious given the fact that (a request for) an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House, including the vice president's, for more than eight months, a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

Gibbs is referring here to a request for additional troops made by the previous top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, during President George W. Bush's final year in office.

I am amazed that the media cover anything Dick Cheney says without any level of critical analysis. As Vice President, Cheney advocated policies that led to the destruction of our image abroad and cost this nation over a Trillion dollars on an Iraq war that did not need to be waged. Dick Cheney was the champion of the Bush era policies that brought this country near economic collapse and international disgrace.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   October 26th, 2009 11:00 am ET

I think that Cheney seems to believe that once people are "freed" from tyranical regimes that they will automatically form democratic governments. That won't happen because people don't know what to do and much of their country was destroyed.

If he was so gun-ho for Afghanistan, then why didn't Cheney tell Bush to stay focused on Afghanistan and skip Iraq for the short term until Afghanistan was stabilzed? I don't think that Cheney really understands what is going on in the world and that he was nation building.

Melissa   October 26th, 2009 11:00 am ET

Cheney is crazy.

We Won Get Over It   October 26th, 2009 10:57 am ET

Well folks we all know that the republicans can tell the true, their mouth always gets in the way.

Lynda   October 26th, 2009 10:56 am ET

You know I would rather have my kids face this mounting debt and have to work their way out of it in the future than to have the Republicans send more sons, daughters, grandsons, grandaughters into more Wars and be Killed.......you can sure bet it is your children and grandchildren they are sending NOT THEIRS..........

jenn   October 26th, 2009 10:55 am ET

The Truth-O-Meter is wasting its time. People like Cheney couldn't care less about the truth. They create their own reality, and the ignorant teabaggers lap it up.

Chanel   October 26th, 2009 10:55 am ET

Cheney just needs to stop. Former Pres Bush along with VP Cheney got us into this mess. Anything they say, should have a disclaimer in fine print (all rights reserved, some jabs and uppercuts still available upon request)

Kathy   October 26th, 2009 10:54 am ET

Cheney has a real problem with the truth. He is the one who is the real coward, never joining the military with 5 deferments during the Vietnam war, typical. He would love to start wars all over the planet for the smallest of reasons. Obama takes the time to get all the facts before sending our troups. Thank God for that.

Dave of Detroit   October 26th, 2009 10:53 am ET

The Hawks of both Parties have a serious problem that no one wants to talk about including the media. Bush had a surplus of funds and a strong economy when he went into Iraq. President Obama has close to 15 percent unemployment and a record 1.4 trillion debt plus the Chinese indebtedness also caused by the Bush Administration-Where is the money coming from to pursue another major offensive? It is no longer a question of guns or butter, it is a question of solvency or bankruptcy! The whole Health Care Takeover is nothing but a ploy to get their hands on a sixth of the U.S. economy and force mandatory payments to continue the irresponsible policies that got our Nation in trouble in the first place!

pshaw   October 26th, 2009 10:52 am ET

I don't need to see a truth meter to know what Dick doesn't.

George James   October 26th, 2009 10:50 am ET

Dick Cheney is opening the Pandora's Box.He is exposing the flaws of the Bush administration.

Jackie in Dallas   October 26th, 2009 10:49 am ET

Yes, Gibbs was telling the truth. The Bush White House, including VP Cheney were much more concerned with the Iraqi war than the fight in Afghanistan. So instead of going after the government that supported the 9/11 terrorists, and the terrorist group itself, they let themselves be distracted by totally bogus threats from Iraq.

IF the Bush Administration had NOT pushed the Iraqi war, we would have the troops available for Afghanistan - and would probably not need them now, since our objectives in Afghanistan would have been met years ago if Cheney, et. al, hadn't taken their eyes off the ball there. It is a military truism that war on two fronts is nearly impossible, and that is amply demonstrated by this situation.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   October 26th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Cheney is a schmuck.

sick and tired!!!!!   October 26th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Cheney needs to just go away... He had his chance to do what was right in Afghanistan, instead he and Bush wanted to make sure we were in that region for years and years to come. So they went looking else where to start more wars over there. War monger!!!! Let's see you and your children get down and dirty with the soldiers you sent over there. Oh I forgot, you only send other people to do your bidding. Don't go away mad, just go away! Your 15 minutes of fame are up...

Denis   October 26th, 2009 10:48 am ET

You know is so very interesting that the very politicians that so quickly supported President Bush and Vice President Cheney in their stupid and thoughtless decision to declare war on Iraq under the misquided and fabricated reasons for the pursuit of WMD are the very Politicians who question every decision that President Obama takes on the wars. These wars have almost completely bankrupted our country.

What is so unbelievable is that the followers/supporters of our
previous administration blindly support these very uninformed Politicians, regardless whether it is good for America. Emotions,
hatred and prejudice seems to always win over logic and what is right and good.

I have voted Democratic and the Republican Parties at various times but I am thankful that I voted for President Obama last November

Chris   October 26th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Cheney's and his daughter comments continue to lead me to believe that he and not Bush was actually running the White House administration in the last eight years. I mean seriously, why on earth is this man constantly trying to interject his influence on the nation regarding what the current adminstration is doing? He is constantly defending the pass action of the Bush Adminstration like he was the President!! I mean heck Bush has put those days behind him and move on. I think Cheney needs to do the same!! He reminds me of a person who just can't let go of the past!!

JEAN - ATL   October 26th, 2009 10:46 am ET

I wish "chief news anchors" like King (CNN) and Gregory(MSNBC) could present facts such as this to those who still have the stomachs to watch them, instead of the lies and misconceptions that they continue to promote.

New Yorker   October 26th, 2009 10:44 am ET

Bush was focused on winning in Iraq which was necessary (contrary to liberal thought). If he had more grassroots support, which liberals did their best to thwart, maybe he would have sent more troops to Afghanistan and fought the battle on that front, also. With our troops stretched so thinly it's amazing that we accomplished so much in Iraq. But, what remains to be seen is whether or not Obama will commit to fighting terrorism or wimp out with the rest of the liberals who don't recognize danger until we're searing in the frying pan. I believe his ideology and handling of affairs, thus far, has emboldened the terrorists and we will see more violence because of his fence-sitting.

Dave C - NJ   October 26th, 2009 10:43 am ET

Gotta love the Republicans...what a joke.

A reader   October 26th, 2009 10:43 am ET

I hate gimmicks like your "truth meter," What is this TMZ for news?

Anyways, why did you list a succession of points and fact check only one? Cheney says A, B, C, Gibbs counters with unrelated points X. Y , Z. Let's go to our truth gizmo.... Point Z, TRUE! DING!

(Hey, good idea, add a sound! DING DING DING = True! BZZZZ = False! Think about the possibilities!)

SAVVY OLDTIMER   October 26th, 2009 10:40 am ET

Cheney is a pathological liar. For eight years, he hid in his bunker, like a criminal, calling the shots, and keeping Americans enslaved to fear,.. and now he has the audacity to comment on the present administration?

CNN - Obama's Press secretary   October 26th, 2009 10:39 am ET

So Obama is saying that becasue Bush did not respond to the General's request for more troops 2 years ago, it is fine for Obama to do the same? So Gibbs is saying that Bush and Cheney acted badly, so Obama ca do the same thing? Now that is change Obama can be proud of - NOT

haren   October 26th, 2009 10:38 am ET

Argument of kipping us safe for 8 years by Bush and Cheney is hollow, instead of 4000 civilian killed on American soil, we paid price of loosing our best 4000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Al Qaeda did not bother to take risk to attack on our soil because we were easy target on their soil.

Jamie   October 26th, 2009 10:37 am ET

That is why McKiernan was pushed aside, and then McChrystal comes and is crying the same thing a few months later. I think the White House, Gates and others working relentlessly on a constructive strategy for Afghanistan should definitely avoid these positions becoming revolving doors and so no stability or progress can take hold. More troops are not the answer, at least should not be the forefront of the strategy, handling the Karzai government and Pakistan are keys to reversing the Bush administration Afghan missteps and mistakes.

Carlos   October 26th, 2009 10:37 am ET

Since they are saying that obummer's bunch has basically been charge since November this is bs, take responsibility and quit blaming everybody else.

C. Farrell, Houston, Tx   October 26th, 2009 10:36 am ET

Cheney is such a liar and should have known there would be a fact check. But to lie about our troops is one of the lowest thing Cheney could do, or is it. Cheney's legacy is in ruins and he's done it to himself now all that's left is to put him on trial for war crimes.

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 26th, 2009 10:35 am ET

Independent_me   October 26th, 2009 10:26 am ET

The nerve of the Cheney Monster!
They think that we are stupid and they bank on the fallacy that Americans have short memories. They are accustomed to making up lies, repeating them ad nauseam, and force-feeding the American public their lies.

They feel that if they say something often enough we will believe them. Well, it may have worked once upon a time...but no more. The Bush-Cheney-Fox gang are evil, ungodly liars.

Marc   October 26th, 2009 10:23 am ET

I see the truth o meter shows that something in this story is true, but doesn't say what...I will just have to assume that the true part of this artical is the statement that Obamessiah is afraid to make a decision.

Independant Vet   October 26th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Gibb's is as much a turn coat as Barrack is. First an fore most , When some one ask's FOR HELP . they respond . Not get a plane an hit the Campain trail , or go shoot a buch of bull . Then come back whinning like a casterated Bull Dog .
Next we will hear Gibb's announce , " the prersident an I ( Gibbs ) have decided with Pelosi , to raise the white flag ."

THIS IS YOUR CHANGE , Whinning about the past administration , That is a different day an an different climate. You have to account for today . Just whine away as more an more military fall to the fact he don'tb know what to do , to please Pelosi an Reid.

Dominican mama 4 Obama   October 26th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Cheney is one of those folks that you DON'T need a Truth-O-Meter for. If he is speaking,he is lying. Period.

John C   October 26th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Let's also not forget the Generals wanted more troops going into Iraq in the first place too. It was Chenney that denied them, claiming we did not need that large of a force. That proved to be the biggest blunder since the decision to invade( also rushed without getting the fact correct first) . If not for all the death Chenney is resposible for, his comments now would be funny.

Ray   October 26th, 2009 10:14 am ET

OUCH. That had to hurt.

John   October 26th, 2009 10:12 am ET

Mr. Gibbs..... you look like a little kid on a playground pointing fingers..... just take a break, sir.... you look like you need it.

and by the way....

Whenever the Obama administration is ready to stop blaming the Bush administration for just about everything under the sun that has gone wrong...... just let us know....

the rest of America is waiting for you to take some ownership and lead this country....

so sad....

Dawn, Ada, Ohio   October 26th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Of course it is true. Cheney needs to disappear but he never will as long as someone is sticking a microphone near his face. CNN: STOP COVERING THIS WAR MONGERING MORON!!! There is much more important news. Cheney is trying to re write history and you are all trying to help him pick up the pieces of his failed administration.

Help me   October 26th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Ouch I guess the truth hurts.

katiec   October 26th, 2009 10:10 am ET

Cheney will say and do anything to get the headlines and the media complies.
For anyone to give any creditibility to what he says, after what he, Bush, the republicans have done to our country these last eight years
is unbelievable.
You know, if CNN did not constantly headline him he might just fade away into oblivion which is where he deserves to be.

Bugl3t   October 26th, 2009 10:09 am ET

Hey, no money to be made by Halliburton and Co. in Afghanistan, I guess....

But that Cheney is distorting the truth for political convenience isn't news... just more of what we had for 8 years, right?

Tram   October 26th, 2009 10:05 am ET

How do you know if Cheney is lying?
His lips are moving.

German,Irish American   October 26th, 2009 10:05 am ET

Are you going to report the rest of the story CNN, or just leave the false impression that Gibbs is telling the truth? You do remember don't you that when McKiernan asked for the additional troops, we were just starting to engage in the surge in Iraq. You remember the surge don't you? You know the one that Obama, Biden, and Reid called a failure before it was even implemented, and then was a huge success, thus proving those three as totally ignorant in military affairs? There were not enough troops for both operations and Bush had to made the decision for the surge. The difference in the two requests is that, in Bush's case, the number of troops was not available for both troop increases, compared to Obama, who is stalling on a decision hoping for a political shift in the winds, while our soldiers are dying waiting for reinforcements.

Connie, Indiana   October 26th, 2009 10:05 am ET

Cheney would be wise to keep his mouth shut. Every time he opens his mouth it opens the door for the truth to come out. Truth is something he doesn't believe in, it is his truth that matters..

Anonymous   October 26th, 2009 10:03 am ET

Seeing as how the previous admin. was so focused on Iraq and not Afghanistan, Cheney should be quiet. All he does is open more doors for the truth to come out on incompetent the previous admin. was. Lets face it "oil" was the motivating force not WMD'S as Bush/ Cheney proclaimed.

Expat American   October 26th, 2009 10:03 am ET

More Republican, Bush, Cheney Lies....but then again, their voting demographic are the ones who don't even realize or simply aren't educated enough to realize that there exists a world outside the United States...because that's how they like it...'Country First' after all, or whatever the hell that really means...To them it's okay to fire missiles into civilians during shock and awe and kidnap and torture children...they aren't people after all. They're brown Muslims, right? Maybe that's the Republican 'Values' they vote for and that's how they put their 'Country First'.

I'm sure the world will be shocked to know that Dick Cheney is a liar who is simply covering his ass so that he can try to rewrite history the way he wants people to see it.

southerncousin   October 26th, 2009 9:56 am ET

Sounds like a Gibbs slant. He works for a man that said he would not hire lobbyists, (How many are in his administration now, 30 to 35?). He lied. He said he wouldn't sign a bill that had earmarks (He signed one that had a record setting 8,000, He lied. He said he would not raise taxes on the middle class, the first bill he signed was the SCHIP. He lied. Now he says the Health Care Reform or Health Insurance Reform bill won't cost another dime. Guess what?

Carole   October 26th, 2009 9:51 am ET

Thank you CNN for doing the Truth O' Meter. I really was appalled at Cheney, of all people, accusing someone of dithering.

I guess when it is not Cheney himself putting on the uniform that he dodged 5 times, nor his daughter who needs to put on the uniform, they can put others lives at risk. As long as it is not Cheney blood being spilled.

Thank goodness we now have a President who takes sending our troops into harms way very 'seriously'.

Jean   October 26th, 2009 9:51 am ET

STOP PLAYING POLITICS! I am just downright sick of both sides. The Dems lost me and the Repulicans lost me. I am now an Independent.
Troops are dying because we have politics involved! How in the world could the last admiistration be blamed when we were dealing with 9-11; Homeland Security, TSA, corruption in the Finance World, troops in Iraq, and now this administration once again wants to blame the last 8 years. Get on with it. MAKE A DECISION. We are either in it for the long haul or pull us out. We cannot walk the fence. DO SOMETHING, DO ANYTHING, JUST DO IT!

Richard   October 26th, 2009 9:50 am ET

Anybody suprised here? Republican rhetorical commitee standard procedure – Welcome President Obama. Oh by the way, here is a faltering economy, a neglected war in Afghanistan, financial markets run amuck, a burst of our housing bubble, a horrible health care status, and failing auto markets that you might want to do something about. NINE MONTHS LATER: We don't think you are cleaning up our mess very well Mr. President!

Barack Obama is failing big and fast: in foreign policy, domestic initiatives, and most importantly, in forging connections with the American people.

He is failing because he has no understanding of the American people, and actually seems to loathe them. He is failing because he has lost control of his message, and is overexposed. He is failing because fundamentally he is neither smart nor articulate, and his intellectual dishonesty is conspicuous by its audacity and lack of shame.

While we’ve been struggling to take a measurement of this man, he’s dissed just about every one of us—financiers, energy producers, banks, insurance executives, police officers, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, post office workers, and anybody else who has a non-green job.

He’s a phony, knows nothing about economics, is historically illiterate and woefully small minded for the size of the task. His profile is fuzzy and devoid of content, like a cardboard cutout. His notions of right and wrong are repugnant, and he is unable to appeal to our own common sense.
