(CNN) – The national war of words between Sarah Palin and the man who was nearly her son-in-law flared up once again on Wednesday, as Levi Johnston accused Palin of frequently describing her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, as "retarded."
Palin's team shot back in an e-mail to reporters, calling the claim "inflammatory" and accusing CBS - the network that aired Johnston's latest interview - of "continually providing a forum to propagate lies."
"We have purposefully ignored the mean spirited, malicious and untrue attacks on our family," Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said in the e-mail, on which Palin's lawyer Thomas Van Flein was copied. "We, like many, are appalled at the inflammatory statements being made or implied. Trig is our 'blessed little angel' who knows it and is lovingly called that every day of his life. Even the thought that anyone would refer to Trig by any disparaging name is sickening and sad."
Stapleton went on to blast Johnston, who is preparing for a photo shoot with Playgirl magazine, as desperate for publicity.
"Consider the source of the most recent attention-getting lies - those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention," she said.
Johnston first made the accusation in a September interview with Vanity Fair and expanded on his claim about Trig during an appearance on the CBS "Early Show" on Wednesday.

Well at least Johnston has not yet resigned as Gov of Alaska so he can make more money writing a book. He is doing nothing that other high light seekers are n't doing like Former Govenor Palin is also doing. He like she and others are willing to lie, cheat and even steal to get ahead in this world so if she cannot take it then maybe she should go back to her Igloo and freeze the door shut.
Sounds like Levi hit a nerve. I believe him. Sarah shows no affection for little Trig. Is it possible that Levi's big secret is that Palin is not the birth mother of Trig? The rumors are definitely still out there and she has never provided any real proof. Levi did say that her daughter, Bristol, is the primary caregiver and acts like his mother. Strange.

although this is really tabloid type stuff.....it seems to me that there are more people in Gov Palin's inner circle that are saying negative things about her than those on the left that are supposed to be "afraid" of her like the right always says. Remember it was HER folks, I assume they too are Republicans, that starting saying negative things about her even before her campaign ended. Now her once dear future son-in-law who she once claimed was working his butt off to graduate, is taking her to task as well. Isn't time for the Palin supporters to stop blaming the media and the left for allof her image problems and look at where they lie? Sarah Painin is worng on every issues. She is nothing but a fear and smear kinda woman, no good characters untrusted fella.
I doubt Johnston has much to gain by this and I KNOW Palin has plenty to gain by denying this so I'm guessing it's true. If it isn't, why doesn't she just sue him? As for "propagating lies", well. I guess the Palin camp would know all about that.
In 2008 Palin was proud to trot out Levi across every political stage possible. She even gave him kisses to show her affection. Now that he wants to do what she is doing (cash in on his fame) she has turned against him. Levi is an honest All-American boy who just wants to be a responsible father by making a decent living. What's the big deal with doing Playgirl? Levi should thank Sarah for once again giving him more publicity.

"Retarded" is old-school, "special needs," or handicapped" is now PC. Whatever the label, statistically, Trig is a later baby, born to an older set of parents, and therefore, more likely to be born with Downs Syndrome.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that what Levi said about Palin is true. WHy? Well, when Sarah Palin brags that she goes hunting.. I wonder how many female animals that had puppies she has killed. ANyone with no feelings or respect for the life of any creature is capable of calling her on child "retarded". Besides, this lady is someone that manipulates and has NO integrity. She plays games that she knows she will win.. like quitting the Governor's office to write in 4 months her memoirs so sh can make some money. Not only that, if she would be someone that is smart and intelligent.. she would have been able to communicate with her daughter so she wouldn't have got pregnant when she was 16 years old.
