H1N1 shots to be offered to Guantanamo detainees

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay, officials there said Friday.

The Pentagon made the decision based on U.S. government assessments that people held in detention facilities are at high risk for the pandemic, said Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, which is in charge of holding the suspected terrorists.

"Detainees at JTF Guantanamo are considered to be at higher risk and therefore they will be offered the H1N1 vaccination," Haynie said.

"JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees. As such, we must provide detainees the medical care necessary to maintain their health," she said.

Base officials had not received the vaccinations and did not know when they were expected to arrive, Haynie said.

Once the vaccinations are received, doses will be administered to active-duty personnel before being offered to detainees and others on the base, Haynie said.

The vaccination is mandatory for all uniformed personnel, she said.

The vaccinations will be voluntary for the detainees, who will be briefed on the virus and the vaccine prior to deciding whether to receive the latter.

Some of the detainees have already voluntarily taken the seasonal flu shot, Haynie said.

I think we need to close Gitmo and let these fine folks move into the White House with Obama, Pelosi and Reid.

Oh, this is just rich! I can't get a shot yet, not can my college age daughter, but the "detainees" can get them!! Explain to me HOW exactly they are a a higher risk when they are pretty much quarantined on an island with little interaction with the outside world? I'm assuming our military that has contact with them have been given the shots...so where is the risk, Pentagon People???? Wake me up from this never ending nightmare!!!!

Great, we can’t get the vaccination as American citizens here in the states due to shortages, yet we’re offering it to our enemies(???). Next will be the ‘al qaeda exchange student program’ or ‘adopt a Gitmo detainee program' – what a joke our country & national defense has become amidst the wash of “ultra-PC/hyper-sensitive-& -chronically-offended-by-everything” society we’ve descended to……..

Great it is a matter of time before the ACLU demands H1N1 shots for all rapists, murderers, and terrorists.

If only the government cared about the rest of us as much as it cared about the detainees in Guantanamo.

Are you saying that people who are being held for trying to kill Americans are going to get this vaccine before Americans? This Administration gets more and more ridiculous.

Obama has his priorities straight.... take care of the terrorists before he takes care of the American people. This administration has lost it!

Thats great. Our federal government cares more for the Islamic extremist who would like to kill all of us than the general population. Thanks President Obama the terrorist hugger. I hope the people in this nation wake up before we have another major terrorist attack that claims thousands of innocent lives.

No one in my entire family can get the vaccine here in the U.S. yet our government seems to think that terrorists at Guantanamo are priorities over U.S. citizens. I am absolutely DISGUSTED and OUTRAGED at the blatent disregard our government has or its own citizens.

I think the policy that the Guantanamo detainees are receiving flu vaccines before many American citizens speaks volumes.

It is just a small example of the fact that our education, law enforcement, and infrastructure funds are being siphoned to pay off Pakistani warlords, Afghan corrupt politicians, and God knows who else...

    We are in big trouble....
