WASHINGTON (CNN)– Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele quickly endorsed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in New York's 23rd congressional district Saturday, after Republican Dede Scozzafava's late decision to drop out of the special election.
Steele, who formally endorsed Scozzafava earlier this week, commended her decision to bow out of the race.
"This selfless act of releasing her supporters provides voters with the opportunity to unite around a candidate who shares Republican principles and will serve the interests of his constituents in Congress by standing in opposition to the liberal policies of President Obama and Speaker Pelosi," Steele said in a statement released by the Republican National Committee.
"Effective immediately, the RNC will endorse and support the conservative candidate in the race, Doug Hoffman. Doug's campaign will receive the financial backing of the RNC, and get-out-the-vote efforts to defeat Bill Owens on Tuesday," he said.

Isn't this the candidate that Sarah's backing? I believe it is.
Request to RNC take big breath and take decision
Stalin would have been proud of the RNC's purge of all those who think. This is the beginning of the end for the party of Lincoln. It will follow it's predecessor, the Whigs, into the dustbin of history.
As a Democrat, I really hope another party rises from the ashes quickly. One party rule is a dangerous thing – for the country and party ruling it.
Power corrupts – just look at Dick Cheney. You can't get more corrupt and remain out of prison.
Desperation.
Yet another loss for the Tam on Michael Steeles watch. When are we going to get rid of this clown?
This is GREAT news!!
This might mean 3 Republican wins on Tuesday!!!!
Why didn't you do that in the first place? No more fence sitters like mccain and graham. We want the real conservative republican party back not the wishy/washy who tries to appease everyone. REAL AMERICAN CITIZENS WITH REAL VALUES AND REAL MORALS! What part of that is the rnc not getting?
I do hope the Democrats come out in full power to vote.
Our country does not need additional radical religious rights
politicians in office.
We do not need the continuation of their beliefs shoved down our
throats.
I hope this is the beginning of the end of liberalism in this country. Mods should just get out of the way so this country can be put back on the course that was intended. Sustain your rage, stoke the backlash, stop Obama...
CNN is nothing but a lap dog to the Obamist/Maoist/Marxist thugs who are raping America. This story should tell CNN that Mr. Obama's Maoist/Marxist revolution will be met with a counter – revolution. Maybe Hugo deVenezuela will find a place for CNN once the American people kick your asses out of North America.
yawn.
more from Michael Steele:
"den right after I do dis here speech, I'se steppin' up to de big house an' git my re-ward from Massa Rush and den I'se goin' down to South Carolina an' get a big helpin' o' watermelon from Massa Joe Wilson, soon as he git back from de Klan meeting. Yassir, dat's what I'm gwine do – serve my white supremacist masters like de good servant I am. Things jes ain't been right since dat runaway Obama done left de plantation. But don't you worry, we'll ketch 'im and hide 'im so he knows his place."
Mr. Steele............you should have endorsed Mr. Hoffman in the first place. Dede Scozzafava is nothing but a liberal pretending to be something else.
If anyone still had any doubts that the republican party has been hijacked, I hope your eyes are finally open.
The party literally purges moderates with gleeful ignorance. Do they understand the difference between radical districts and National elections?
We conservatives sent you blue-blood, inside the belt-way RNC establishment a clear message with the 9-12 March on Washington. You ignored it and ran a RINO in NY 23. So, now we have sent you an ultimatium. Stop promoting RINOs or face extinction.

Steele quickly added that the RNC was happy to exclude the moderate female candidate because now they can support the rich white male which is what the RNC really aims to do in the first place.
CNN is coming out in full force today to headline, draw attention to their republicans.
We use to be able to depend on Cafferty on balancing their bias to a degree, but even he has gone to the far right. His negativity towards our president, expectation and demanding he perform miracles, swiftboating everything he does has left us high and dry.
Wish we could get the Jack that used to be back, but think that
would be expecting another "miracle".
On to New Jersey...
The RNC might get it yet. If the majority of Republican and conservative voters had supported Scozzafava's values over Hoffman's, she would have had the majority of support and Hoffman would have gotten very little support. If Scozzafava had truly represented the values of a majority of her Republican constituants, she should have deserved the support of the RNC and there should be room in the Republican tent for Republicans like her when that is the case. But this was not the case. What the RNC needs to get their head around is that fewer voters identify themselves as Republicans then they do as Democrats or Independents. But twice as many voters identify as Conservatives as Republicans. This points to a large number of Independent conservatives. On election day these Independents will be looking for the candidates that best represent their conservative values and that is not likely to be a liberal Democrat. But a liberal Republican candidate will not present them with much of a choice against a liberal Democrat. Conservatives will not see that it matters much which one wins. The only entitiy that will care is the RNC, but it won't make much difference to the voters who are not interested in the RNC being in power but who are interested in seeing their values represented.
Jump through the hoop at every command Mr. Steele. Your party is a joke!
The Far Right continues its usurping of the Republican Party. They have Rove and his minions to thank for this. It is downhill from here.
If you are any kind of moderate you cannot be a Republican. Another example of how extreme the Republicans have become. I hope they slither away. I honestly cannot think of one CURRENT Republican I like. All the ones I like have converted to be Independents or Democrats.
Call Newt, he needs a fishing buddy.
Steele still backing losers, I see...
The sooner uncle steele steps in front of a bus the better off the Country will be.
Saracuda's Tsunami is coming.....this will be so fun
M. Steele,
NOW YOU ENDORSE Hoffman!
You endorsed her because she was the "party nominee". YOU are the party chairman and you never should have endorsed that RINO.
Now you are endorsing Hoffman? You should have been high on his list long ago. Talk about a Johnny come lately, you are the king.
She never was what we want and did you see she couldn't even endorse Hoffman!
She couldn't even say Republican Party, she said my party will emerge etc. etc.
This is a Republican. YOU ENDORSED HER.
She was always a RINO and you endorsed her. What the h–l is wrong with you?
I think we just found out who runs the GOP. No more center right, just extreme right. Palin, Rush and the rest of the Fix News group. The GOP continues to move right, right and more right. Then they wonder why their party is only 20% of the nation. Now with this move that number is probably 15%. Any republican who is center right is not welcome in the new GOP. It shows how strong the extreme right has become in the GOP, they scared Newt and Steele into changing their minds. Everyone welcome the new GOP representing 15% of America.
Steele is destoying the RNC, but why not let him do it.
The moderate Republican dropping out of the race because the CONSERVATIVE party candidate is eating up her share of support is conclusive proof that today's Republican Party has been taken over by extremists.
The Democratic Party clearly represents the diversity, inclusiveness, and moderation of our country today.
Ok- is time to take back the House 1 seat at a time. Let's get candidates that won't forget who they work for. Go Hoffman!
This man goes whatever way he is lead, right, wrong, or indifferent. What amazes me it is obvious that Hoffman has won and you still continue to spend RNC funds. I wonder how many people could profit from this now ego trip that the repubs are on. Now I know CNN you will knock that comment off.
Steele is epically spine-less.
Way to go MIKE.....
No more MODERATE REPUBLICAN...enough of the ole WEAR YOUR HAT based on how you ROLE is out the door.
It's more like WEAR YOUR HAT based on what Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin view in AMERICA.
The REPUBLICAN is prunning it's constiuents...either you are a CONSERVATIVE or other.....
Can you say....... KISS OF DEATH?
Owens is history.
So replace a "selfless act" with a selfish one from pandering Steele. Say it ain't so.
Palin and Limbaugh really are the GOPer leaders. What a joke.
Flip-Flopper, you guys eat your own spit them out, and go about your way...
No one cares who the RNC endorces. Steele shuold wake up and listen. Voters could care less about politicans want. The voters want their voice heard and don't need any more Republicans. They want a candidate that will listen and represent them, not a political party.
PROOF OF SARAH PALIN's PROWESS IN THE GOP
No other way to describe this but a win for the extreme right-wing faction of Sarah Palin's Republican Party.
Religious-right crusader Sarah Palin backed extremist Doug Hoffman, and then GOP Governor Pawlenty followed by GOP Party Chairman Michael Steele and past GOP Leader Newt Gingrich had to switch their endorsement to Doug Hoffman after Palin put her foot down and Republican Moderate Dede Scozzafava quit NY-23 race.
The RNC supports their candidates until it is politically expedient to support another party. Gotta love the loyalty they exhibit.
I can't wait for the day this dunder-head stops speaking.
Thank You Dede for doing the right thing for the party and your country.
Now maybe the Republican Party will finally start listening to what the Conservatives have been saying for the past 2 years.
This is your wake-up call.
Ooops looks like the RNC made a mistake in choosing their candidate. It's hilarious to watch them jump on the Hoffman bandwagon once they realized he was going to win. It's like a kid going "me too, me too"! Real question: why did they pick Scozzafava over Hoffman. Maybe, just maybe, they're not *actually* conservative. Come on RNC, it takes more than a last minute switch to win my support.
how idiotic...she does not have any charisma for herself...GOP asks her to endorse...ha...ha...ha...if she has, should have stood...right....this is solid proof, that GOP and Republicans have no brain....listen to this educated....God bless the nation, the USA!!!!
Why doesn't this jerk just shut his stupid mouth? How much does he earn for being a GOP dope?
All these spineless GOP hacks are now endorsing Hoffman.Where were they when he was behind their Acorner candidate by 8 points?Hiding in the closet reading quotes from Mao,like Anita Dunn?Theres one thing for sure in the GOP,a few of their women have enough guts to stand up and fight for conservatives.Gingrich well now he endorses like all these late commers. They just showed Americans how spineless their party really is when it comes to supporting conservatives.I hope Hoffman wins this.I hope the GOP takes notes about what just happened here.Being a mirror of the DNC is not an alternative to the DNC.
now work on that yes sir, no sir so that you can cower properly
you are doing a fine job and getting your marching orders from Rush and Hannity, I don't believe I have seen a person sell their soul as well as you
Interesting. I didn't hear Scozzafava endorse Hoffman.
Dede did what was right for conservatism! In contrast, can anyone imagine self-centered beurocrats like Barney Frank sacrificing his political future for the good of the Democrat Party? Of course not! Self-serving hypocrits like; Rangel, Dodd, Reid, Pelosi and Obozo et al, will ultimately bring the whole left-wing ideology down in the gutter and certain defeat in 2010 and 2012. Just wait and see folks! It can't happen soon enough either.
Go Doug!
