As voters across the country head to the polls Tuesday, one thing appears certain: Many of them are angry.

Washington (CNN) – As voters across the country head to the polls Tuesday, one thing appears certain: Many of them are angry.

And that anger could shape the results of three of the most high-profile elections this year - gubernatorial battles in New Jersey and Virginia and the fight for an open seat in New York's 23rd Congressional District.

National polls indicate that many voters are in a foul mood. The big question is whether that mood will continue into 2010, when the entire House of Representatives, more than a third of the Senate and more than a third of the governorships are up for grabs.

"We're in the middle, I think, of a political rebellion going on in America," House Minority Leader John Boehner said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "And this rebellion is by people who really have not been actively involved in the political process and they don't really care if you're a Democrat or a Republican. They want to see people who are going to stand up and protect the future for our kids and grandkids."

Republican "leaders" and conservative talk-radio have deliberately created that anger with lies and scare tactics. The mainstream media have provided a megaphone for every false accusation and criticism, regardless of validity or substance. Democratic values will only survive if the media becomes more substantive and calls out politicians when they lie and obstruct.

Jeff in Houston   November 3rd, 2009 11:44 am ET

We are int he middle of cleaning up a very frightening situation left by the Bush Regime, and this clean up is going to involve pain, complicated solutions, and yes, a few false starts. No one has ever had to clean up a mess of this magnitude before. This also means we are trying to do the clean up while a tribe of ignorant savages cling to their voodoo, tribal chieftans, and weird holy-men.

The problem is, there sedem to be alot more ignorant savages that thinking, reasoning adults.

Howie   November 3rd, 2009 11:38 am ET

Who would vote for the democrats, look at the past ten months. A disaster. Hope more independents run in the next election

Adam from Ohio   November 3rd, 2009 11:27 am ET

Of course they're angry: they're RIGHT-WINGERS! Right-wingers are ALWAYS angry! Their eyes are always wide, their nostrils are always flarin' their faces are always red, their jowels are always shaking. Angry, angry white men, who are just so ticked that their many centuries of unwarranted dominance over every part of life is now over, instead replaced by a more egalitarian society in which some biracial president has the NERVE to, you know, get elected.

single mom   November 3rd, 2009 11:26 am ET

Politicians need to remember that they serve at the discretion of their consituents. Not special interests. All the money in the world (Corzine comes to mind) will not get you elected if the people decide they don't like what you're doing in office.

Idiot_Pelosi   November 3rd, 2009 11:24 am ET

It's simple, people look at OBUMMER, PELOSI, REID, B FRANK, C SCHUMMER and start to puke.

This TAX and SPEND montra of the DUMocRATic party isn't going to fly anymore.

If you can't pay for it in the existing tax revenue, you shouldn't be spending it.

Perhaps the millions to billions of dollars spent on PORK in the so called Stimulus (Jobs) bill should have been SAVED instead of wasted.

Perhaps OBUMMER should stop travelling around the country trying to be the next American Idol and campaigning; instead, he should focus on the economy.

OBOZO is unqualified and it shows.

Wanda   November 3rd, 2009 11:21 am ET

They just want someone to blame - and the media fuels the anger very well - blame the media is what I say - they are to blame for most of what has happened --print this - NOT I BET!

The problem is that idiot barack just wants to push us into socialism and inevitably communism...

His outspoken czars do not believe in freedom or our constitution.
His czars are barack. They are self proclaimed communists.

Well you call it anger some of us out here that could care less about your party crap feel that there are so many that think they know how we feel. I support our country and to spend all of the wealth of our country without care for or future is bad.

Now I find that here at this board if I am not bashing the Republicans it will not post as CNN likes to support only one side of the story. If we as a people do not wake up and take back our country from these people in DC from both parties then when the light go out blame not me but all of us because we forgot to be American first.

Do not worry CNN the most trust news will not post this

Connie, Indiana   November 3rd, 2009 11:12 am ET

the voters are angry, because they have fed a bunch of crap by the right and the tea-baggers..There is where the problems lie, the republicans have been on a "NO" campaign for the past yr. Instead of trying to get the country back in shape, their agenda seems to be the further destruction of the US. They have not come up with any bills that give the American people a choice. It is the dems with do this or that with nothing other than blank pages to support their stand..The only thing the republicans have done, is feed the anger of the American people and why, they want the power back regardless how it affects the people of their districts..That is their plan pure and simple.

chill   November 3rd, 2009 11:12 am ET

This overwhelming concern for our kids and grandkids is touching, but we seem to forget that leaving them with a third-rate health system that many of them can't afford, a government bankrupted by healthcare costs, an educational system that produces third-world results, a world with mega-storms and huge disruptions caused by rising sea levels, and an economy that cannot compete and at the same time maintain our standard of living is not exactly a good deal either. The investments being made in education, energy, infrastructure, and healthcare will undoubtedly leave us with a big bill to pay off, but the investment in our future and for that of those same kids and grandkids is still better than the GOP ostrich approach.

Marry   November 3rd, 2009 11:11 am ET

Why in the world should voter be angry? Most are thankful for the chance to participate in the process of pulling the country back from the brink. The GOP is still trying with lies and scare tactics to push others over the cliff. If you are paying attention, and get your info from more sources than just Fox news, you will notice that the President works hart and successfully on many fronts to build the country back up again. So, here is your very own opportunity to participate in something great – not the “fail, fail” “no, no”, “socialists”, “communist” (remember McCarthyism?) “Freedom” cries from the RIGHT with no plans, except keeping everything the way it is –THEY profit and YOU lose! Freedom also requires responsibility – something the Right has apparently never heard of!

Tommygunn   November 3rd, 2009 11:11 am ET

Everyone should take a DEEP BREATH and VOTE in CALM.

The fear of bankruptcy, saving lost and uncertainty only heightens ones emotions during election day. This is a tactic to either DRIVE YOU to the POLLS on PASSION or KEEP YOU AWAY from the POLLS on APATHY.

No matter who wins and become in charge, GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN and BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.

We have GOD GRACE to get us THROUGH REGARDLESS and HE IS WATCHING HOW YOU ACT plus WHAT YOU SAY.

This is what you should TRULY BE FEARFUL OF.....

Anyone who supports bailouts, big government and continued generational debt should be voted out! I don't care what party you are. I don't care if you are for abortion or against. I don't care if you are for gay marriage. We must get this country righted first. NO MORE!

Hey Zeus   November 3rd, 2009 11:08 am ET

It's a parody, people.

If Dems win, it's a referendum of support for Obama.
If GOP wins or, (partially), if they lose, it's a backlash within the party.

Robert J 1   November 3rd, 2009 11:07 am ET

Sure people are angry. They are fed lies an innuendoes by people like Boehner and the Republican party so much they can't think for themselves (probably never could anyway.) Bonehead Boehner talks about standing up for our kids and grandkids. What has he done along with the Republican majority for the last 15 years? How will our kids be able to afford health care / education/ or a house? All thanks to Boehner and his colleagues. Now they want us to think they know so much and what is needed. Who has he and the Republican party been standing up for? The rich. Thats who and we can tahnk him and the Republicans for all the crap we have now from unemployment/ to wars/ to a crooked financial system. Wake up America and THINK Listen and act. Now is the time to get rid of Republicans period and get this country back on track!

ATL Guy   November 3rd, 2009 11:05 am ET

Angry Tea Baggers that didn't get their Palin in the White House are going to come out in droves. Problem is, voting in these races change nothing on the ground. The Republicans are still the minority party and have not offered any ideas on how to fix anything. So far they're being negative as though that will help put them back into power.

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   November 3rd, 2009 11:04 am ET

What is difficult is a lot of the anger, mine included is displaced. My focus is simple this nation is a "Republic" not a democracy. We have the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. What the conservatives fail to realize is many of the social issues they stand against are protected by our Constitution. Same sex relationships are protected as an individual liberty by the constitution, it does not matter that it is un-Christian; we have a separation of Church and state.
Our elected officials need to stop supporting issues simply because it is popular; the only concern should be is this constitutional. Are bailouts of private business allowed? Can the Government spend more money than it has? Do I have the right to live my life even if my choices are perceived to be unhealthy? Should we enter into preventive wars? Etc...

rachel   November 3rd, 2009 11:03 am ET

I hope people vote with their hearts. I am still waiting on that hope and change president Obama has promised. His words are wearing thin. Lots of people still in the same situation as they were during the Bush years including myself. At least Bush let my have a 600 dollar check as a stimulus at the end of the year. Obama's 7 dolllars every two weeks on my check dont add up to a hill of beans for me especially considering I now have to put it more for my healthcare that I gave up my raise for. I am scared to see what my pay check will be if the public option goes through and tax my healthcare plan to death.

Doug - Dallas   November 3rd, 2009 11:00 am ET

If anyone wonders why the voters are mad, they must be living under a rock. Where we are right now is a result of "business as usual" and if you look at the banks, wall street, credit card companies, etc you can see why we're mad. We're getting screwed!! Our elected "representatives" are not taking care of the people who elected them. They pandering to the big money and they do not have the courage to stand up for what is right.

In case anyone is listening, our financial markets are in the same state they were right before this most recent collapse because no one changed the rules or the laws. They just took all the money we gave them and went back to business as usual. The difference is this time it's our money at risk and if it is lost there's no way to get it back.

manyamile   November 3rd, 2009 10:59 am ET

It seems like the right is very angry...why? Gov't spending? Where were these people for the last 8 years? And why are we spending money? Because deregulation caused businesses to take too much risk. Unemployment would be around 15-20% if we did nothing.

Randolph Carter, I'm no expert but....   November 3rd, 2009 10:52 am ET

Because most Americans are spoiled brats who want everything now and are completely incapable of thinking about the long term good of the country and their fellow citizens. You got tax cut after tax cut for the last 30 years and then you wonder why the government can't get anything done and why there's a huge deficit. You keep buying poorly made cheap goods from overseas and wonder where all of the manufacturing jobs went. But then, none of this matters as long as you've got yours, right? God forbid you should have to make any sacrifices for the good of us all. Just keep buying into the illusion that someday you'll strike it rich or get famous. If TV says it, it must be true! That's a good little consumerbot. Have a nice day!

Lynne   November 3rd, 2009 10:52 am ET

Much of it fueled by the media and its "celebrity" pundits instead of doing their job which is to report the NEWS: international and national. When did these people who spout off every day become socalled experts on every topic? Their profits are now pinned on continual election mode.

When did so many Americans turn their decisions over to the media who have monetary gain invested in creating controversy? The media has become just another set of greedy corporations no different than Wall Street,International businesses and banks!!

Ajay Jain   November 3rd, 2009 10:51 am ET

House Minority Leader John Boehner is NOW going to stand up and protect the future for our kids and grandkids! What happened under BUSH when he doubled the deficit!! Republican memory is very short!!!

Matt   November 3rd, 2009 10:44 am ET

"Frustrated" is the better word. I haven't met too many that are really angry/rebellious. Most feel that our country leaders are doing what is best for their party / ideology, ignoring than which is best for the country.

Examples would include: insane spending in an economic downturn, pushing through policies that will raise the costs of energy bills, as well as products (food, manufactured goods...), and trying to enact legislation that limits freedoms (healthcare bill, fairness doctrine, net neutrality...). Not to mention foreign policy debacles.

This starts at the top (Obama) and trickles down to other seemingly corrupt or dishonest, ideologs (Pelosi, Reid, Rangle, Boxer, Waxman, Waters, Barney Frank, Dodd, Murtha...).

James   November 3rd, 2009 10:44 am ET

Duck Fallas   November 3rd, 2009 10:42 am ET

Right! Many paranoid old voters are still upset that a black man is in the Whitehouse, and are afraid that their free health care will somehow be threatened by health insurance reform.

Billy J..Texas..   November 3rd, 2009 10:40 am ET

Although I hold my nose and usually vote Democratic, if both parties were on fire, they wouldn't be worth spitting on to put them out. Complete sell outs on both sides. Hardly anyone is voting what they know is right, or bothering to know enough to make an informed decision up there. They are not all that way, nor did they all start out with such a corrupt and lazy work ethic. But K street, Lobbyists, Party Bosses and the media have done a fine job of bending these wimps to their will.

Marie Laveaux   November 3rd, 2009 10:40 am ET

What an ugly picture if one goes to the "full story". The only angry people I see are old white people and religious fanatics who have been whipped up into a frenzy by a handful of shameless, self-serving fear mongerers who would stop at nothing to see this administration fail. The leaders of the GOP have declared war on the President, and thus, on America itself.

CNN, It would be very disheartening if you did not post this comment. I find that if I am the first to post a comment, it never gets printed.

Dan, TX   November 3rd, 2009 10:39 am ET

Americans are whiners, just like Phil Gramm said. We are in the process of being crushed by the rest of the world as they move forward and we are anti-science.

Compare communist China to South Korea for health care. Which system is better? The democrats want the South Korean health care model. The republicans want the communist Chinese health care system.

Mike   November 3rd, 2009 10:39 am ET

People are fed up with this government and will vote to return to the center/right. The elections today will reflect their mood against nobama and the demorat congress. Also CNN's poll that 54 percent approve of nobama is incorrect, a survey of likely voters show his favorability at 46 percent and dropping. 54 percent personally like nobama which I do not understand this for an apologizer.

Mike   November 3rd, 2009 10:38 am ET

You know what makes me angry? The majority of Americans WANT a public option. But somehow the media thinks that that majority is a fringe group.

Doug, New Jersey   November 3rd, 2009 10:35 am ET

Osama Bin Laden as a Democrat could have spent a quarter of what Croniezine has spent and he would have won the election in New Jersey in a landslide.

From Mafia goons to Narcisisst soccer moms who endanger the lives of their chldren and the people around them with their liberal driving, New Jersey is as about Democrat as a state can get.

JD   November 3rd, 2009 10:34 am ET

How can it be when voter sentiments are pro-Democrat, emotions are always portrayed in a positive light (e.g, "change," "hope" and other pabulum)...but when voter sentiment is anti-Democrat, it's always "anger, frustration, racism, you-name-it-negativity"?

Calling you on your liberal bias, CNN.

katiec   November 3rd, 2009 10:33 am ET

Well, the republicans most certainly did not protect us or the future of our country these last eight years. By being in bed with big business and an irresponsible president, they almost destroyed our country.
We now have president trying to dig us out of the diasters they created and they STILL are not supporting anything to help our country or us.
They are on their way to becoming our countries most dangerous domestic terrorists.

Some republican guy   November 3rd, 2009 10:30 am ET

The narcisstic obamabots and the Oprah watching union thugs want to spend my grandbabies future on wasteful porkuluses like healthcare and interstructure!!! They want to teach my grandbabies that we come from monkeys! Monkeys!!!! How can my grandbabies compete in the real world if their not taught how the world and people were really created??? We're in the middle, I think, of a political rebellion going on in America,"...I agree and on the threshold of a revolution. No jobs, mass immigration, huge taxes looming, lost of lifestyle and Democrats and Republicans are both only looking out for themselves and the big corporations.

In a way, this is good, Americans will opne their eyes, wake up and put a stop to all the outsourcing, eliminate the social welfare programs and get the country back to work. Too bad, we wil have to lose everything before there is any action. We desperately need a new political party " The Independents".

I think to use the term anger is overstating and inaccurately labeling the sentiment. To say it is only conservatives who are feeling this sentiment is completely false, and dismissive of the vast number of Americans who fall into this category. Most of the people who I would describe as, disillusioned by their "representatives" in government, are average, middle income to lower income, moderates. My wife and I have been registered Democrats, but are changing to Independents due to the poor leadership of the Democrat party. We feel that the Democrat party is completely out of touch with its core/roots, and that the party has been hijacked by a liberal/radical minority which is trying to shove its fringe policies down the public's throats. We don't feel that either party is interested in "the will of the people". It is our opinion that each party leadership is concerned only with its twisted, out of touch agenda, and not in what is best for the people.

GI Joe   November 3rd, 2009 10:22 am ET

Annie, Atlanta   November 3rd, 2009 10:19 am ET

It amazes me that there is anger on the right. We're in a "Great Recession." And why is that? The policies of the right. Tax breaks for the rich while fighting 2 wars, one based on a lie. Tax breaks for large corporations who then move their operations to Asia for cheap labor. Wall Street run amok. Who did this to us? How is this President Obama's fault? How is the VA race a test of his popularity. Where was all this anger when Bush was destroying our country and creating a divide between us that may never be healed? Republicans are mad? I'm mad at Republicans for destroying my country and for now turning into the westernized version of the Taliban with all their hate and bigotry. They're misdirecting that anger. And you, CNN, just give them a legitimate voice without pointing out the obvious. President Obama is going to make mistakes. But a magic wand he does not have.

No wonder people are angry. We have elected representatives in this country who would rather, for the political gain of themselves and their political party, see the President and Congress fail in their attempt to move this country forward. We have citizens who refuse to read or listen to anyone but demagogues and pundits on TV who will say anything they have to in order to make a few bucks. Lastly, we have a member of the House of Representatives who stated on the House floor that she believes Americans have more to fear from the Democrats' health care bill "than we do from any terrorist right now in any country." How did we get so stupid and misguided.

Reny   November 3rd, 2009 10:16 am ET

Americans are morons. They will use this "anger" that was surprisingly absent during 8 years under Bush to throw Obama out. I hope the next republican president is 10 times worse than Bush. Give all those tea baggers and racists just what they deserve.

catmom   November 3rd, 2009 10:14 am ET

Here again the media and Republicans are trying to make an issue out of nothing . YES, things are bad. That was the way the Republicans left the country after their eight year reign. Most sane people realize that the country was left in a bad, very bad state. And while Republicans hate to hear it, it was a result of the poor leadership and horrible policies of the Bush administration and the Republican party. Americans also see that Republicans are doing absolutely nothing, not a thing to help repair the damage that was done to our country at their hands. Republicans have also made it more than clear that they want to see this President fail and seem to be doing everything they can to see this happen. THAT is why they want to make the election a referendum on President Obama. Most sane people know that this is about what is going on in their state. While President Obama is in charge of the country, the states have to do their part and THAT has nothing to do with Obama at this point. President Obama is doing his job whether you like it or not. Now it's time for the states to do their part. It is also way past time the Republicans did their part but they are to power hungry to do it.

Independent and Senior Lilarose in Oregon   November 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

No one is more immature than American voters....or Americans in general.

You can't always "fix" things without being patient! I cannot believe that there are voters in this country who are willing to risk another round of Bushism.

The future of our country should not be decided by "popularity contests." That is what voters are doing in some states–this ain't a high school student body election, folks!

Obama said it will take a long time to fix what broke. People sure have short attention spans (that goes along with small brain capacity).

Bren   November 3rd, 2009 10:13 am ET

Oh heck yeah, this anger will continue through the 2010 elections.

Actually, I suspect that the anger will be a LOT worse as the 2010 elections get closer.

The 3 biggest mistakes this country has ever made--Pelosi, Reid, and Obama-–and any politician who supported them or their policies will be booted in 2010.

There are 49 moderate/blue dog Dems in conservative districts up for reelection in 2010--all in districts that were won by McCain!!

Willy Brown   November 3rd, 2009 10:12 am ET

Buh bye democrats.

KLR   November 3rd, 2009 10:11 am ET

Voters may be in a foul mood, but it's hard to believe that people could so easily forget the past eight years of Bush so quickly. Are we truly that temperamental and irrational? I sincerely hope not. Obama may have taken too much on his plate, but he is addressing all issues in an intelligent, rational and extremely competent manner. We need to give him a chance to have his measures take effect.

As for the economy, let's not forget that it was not GOVERNMENT (aside from the costs associated with a misguided war) who put us in this predicament – it was PRIVATE firms. Firms which, even now, are empowered enough to once again award large bonuses to their employees. This needs to be curtailed.

stevegee   November 3rd, 2009 10:10 am ET

People are angry because Obama and the Democrats have been trying to "change" our republic into a socialist nightmare.

This Election Day, people are voting for freedom and liberty. If you're a Democrat, you'd better update your resume because you'll be out of a job!

Ryan   November 3rd, 2009 10:07 am ET

The only people are who angry are Republicans and since their leader George Bush couldn't be bothered with regulating his biggest supporters and CEO buddies and came up with that ridiculous tarp plan.. then they should be angry.

Of course they have no idea specifically what taxes went to it and how much but boy aren't they a scary a mob indeed... :P

You wing-nuts think you're the only ones who are in a "foul mood." YOU'RE WRONG !! We are sick and tired of your obstruction, the lies coming out of your right-wing media sources. We are working on fixing the problems you left us. All you're doing is listening to the Becks and Limbaughs of the world and setting around getting mad on the basis of false information that is fed to you lemming by those people.

Keep it. I'll guarantee you the American people as a whole are NOT going to vote for a party that believes that "cut taxes" and "read the Bible" are the answers to all problems.

How disturbing that we, the People, have allowed the GOP's hate, lies, fear and division to get under our skin! "Angry"? Hmmmm. Have we become a nation of whiners?

People, need to do some of their own thinking and stop listening to the daily hate from AM Radio & Faux News.

President Obama INHERITED the Great Recession from a Republican president who was our leader for the last EIGHT YEARS!

We can not expect the economy and all our problems to suddenly get FIXED overnight. The economy is not fast food! We have been in recessions before, for those of you who are too young to remember! The 80's during Reagan's eight years were rough!

(excuse the yelling) DO NOT GIVE THE GOP POWER THEY ARE THE REASON WE ARE IN THIS MESS! GET OUT & VOTE!

Voters are angry? Yeah, but 54% approve of Obama's presidency? Yeah, right, where was this poll taken?

Enough   November 3rd, 2009 10:04 am ET

If the destruction of America keeps up, the anger will show in 2010. Obama is the worst president in history and with the Democrats in control of everything........they need to be stopped. Enough with the bankrupting of America.

victim of republican greed   November 3rd, 2009 10:01 am ET

This is what the foreign billionaire that owns a majority of media outlets has been trying to accomplish through fear, hate and lying.

phoenix86   November 3rd, 2009 10:00 am ET

Americans are angry about the bait-and-switch of the Obama camp. He ran as a moderate but governs as a far left fringe candidate. Had Obama been honest with the voters, Hillary would have won the primaries and would now occupy the White House.

Americans have every reason to be angry, they were deceived.

Fred   November 3rd, 2009 9:56 am ET

Considering that most people DO want universal health care and DO believe that we need reform in many areas of industry, starting with banks and corporate red carpets, yes, I do think there will be even more change, favoring the Democrats. The country is sick and tired of the Party of "NO" playing the no-answers obstructionists.

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   November 3rd, 2009 9:55 am ET

Voters are more angry at Congress than anyone else.
