This Is At Least Better News For Democrats Than Losing Two Governors Races.

Peggy Lucas   November 4th, 2009 4:41 am ET

This was a referendum for Palin – you lost.

Pragmatic   November 4th, 2009 4:27 am ET

Good for the voters in NYS- 23! The stench of national conservatives flocking in to tell local moderate republicans what to do was more than anyone could stomach... ... the best the national has-beens and wanabes could offer was a last minute carpetbagger that didn't even live in the district. All politics are local ...

Anj   November 4th, 2009 2:27 am ET

So the nut that Palin and the rest of the lunatic fringe backed was beaten. And, for the first time since (of all things) the civil war, a democrat will represent NY 23. I'm guessing its not a good idea for outsiders to tell people who they should vote for.

Shut up Dick!

Michael   November 4th, 2009 2:20 am ET

So voters are still rejecting right-wing conservatism after the 8 years of utter failure and disastrous policies under George W Bush

Susan   November 4th, 2009 2:00 am ET

It's good to know some of the voters were paying attention!! I was disappointed the Conservative fringe ran the republican out of the running for a man who didn't know the issues, didn't live in the district, and actually looked and acted like a deer caught in the headlights!!

Suzanne Liss   November 4th, 2009 1:59 am ET

This should take some wind out the sails of the conservative party and Glen Beck who was Hoffman's " mentor" and who Hoffman swore allegiance to uphold the seven principles of the conservative party on T.V.

Perhaps this will teach a lesson to all the big names who rushed to fall in line behind Sarah Palin and her endorsement of Hoffman. In this Republican stronghold she seems to be the kiss of death!

Certainly the Republican candidates from Virginia and New Jersey did not want her help or endorsement and they won!

SAVVY OLDTIMER   November 4th, 2009 1:46 am ET

Forget Virginia or New Jersey,... this is the shocker,... elected a Democrat, for the first time in 100 years, despite all the dirty tricks from the wing nuts, and the anointment from Palin, Beck and Limbo man. The good folks of Upper New York, want nothing to do with the right wing extremist wackos. Put a spin on that Fox.

oliver   November 4th, 2009 1:44 am ET

boy the republicans are going to have a heart attack. No democrat has won for 120 years in this part of the country. Thanks Sarah hahahaha.

TRUTH   November 4th, 2009 1:28 am ET

let obama do fine like he did here

Celebrating in NY-24   November 4th, 2009 1:24 am ET

When Sarah Palin decided that she knew better than local New Yorkers what their best interests were, you said "No thanks" to their handpicked centerless ideologue. Color me impressed, NY-23!

queeny   November 4th, 2009 1:19 am ET

Hoffman's loss is a referendum on his tard mentor Glenn Beck. Good riddens!

I am the flacid and powerless wizard of Rush with yellow teeth   November 4th, 2009 1:19 am ET

Congratulations Glenn Beck and all the teabaggers for scaring the heck out of the voters in NY 23rd.
120 years since a Democrat won – wow, Glenn – maybe you should start a 9-13 movement.

Jerry Link   November 4th, 2009 1:17 am ET

This says more than any race all night and it will be ignored. What a shame.

Say Yes   November 4th, 2009 1:02 am ET

Good!

Marc Gendron   November 4th, 2009 1:01 am ET

Congratulations Mr. Owens!!!!
Over 130 years of Republican rule comes to an end.

Not the money from the RNC, Palin, Thompson, Beck, Limbaugh or Pataki could help the loser Hoffman. How dare they try to BUY the election with all their nasty commercials.

You Republicans are the party of MESS.

Godspeed.

Nija   November 4th, 2009 12:55 am ET

Way to go Man United Lib.

Susan   November 4th, 2009 12:55 am ET

Great. The only candidate Sarah Palin endorsed lost.

Scott   November 4th, 2009 12:52 am ET

Thank god.....Hoffman was a loon!

Prof. Charles, University of Texas   November 4th, 2009 12:49 am ET

Apparently there are absentee ballots. This call might be early. However, A Hoffman win here will derail future of GOP.

Lee   November 4th, 2009 12:44 am ET

About time. The district has been Republican since the 19th Century, even after redistricting occurred in 2002.

This election proved that hysterics from the right wing didn't work. Look at the numbers! At least 4500 more people voted for the Democrat, and the Republican who pulled out after being viciously attacked - and I mean VICIOUSLY attacked - by the conservative right wing, still got over 6,000 votes. It's not a heavily populated district - it's rural. 6,000 Republicans and some independent voters said NO to the right wing. They voted Republican for the real Republican candidate.

Dan, TX   November 4th, 2009 12:44 am ET

The conservatives who support the US getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan need to support Obama now. Why are we taking money away from conservatives to spend in Iraq and Afghanistan. The government is stealing your money to give to the muslims. Get out of Iraq and Afghanistan now. Support the democrats.

vezuvion1   November 4th, 2009 12:43 am ET

This is a major win for the people. To unseat a republican stronghold that has been locked down for decades speaks major volumes. Because the GOPers came from all over the country led by the nutjob chicky poo who doesnt ever deserve to have her name spoken and they lost the 23rd NY district is beyond a blessing. This win instantly takes the wind out of the GOPs grandstand celebration of winning the N.J. and VA. governor races.

They can spin it, twist, contort it and deny it all they want, the people spoke and the truth prevailed. A major, major upset. Barbour may got the last word in, but the people got the last laugh.

Now begins the crumbling of the GOP despicable and cowardly plan to ride a wave of change in the 2010 mid-terms.

It is a grand day indeed. A very grand day to see another GOP stranglehold end, especially one of the longest most entrenched GOP districts. Take a hike Hoffman, you lost and you send a message to the american people.

The democrat voters are watching and they will come out in force in 2010 and counter the anger of the GOP rank and file and all the sad extremist. Yes extremist, they are beyond conservative.

The lord and the angels are dancing with joy, because the signals the trumpets of truth and goodness will finally prevail...........

JAM   November 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET

Repubs eat their own!

Wes   November 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET

To heck with the Virginia races, the Democrats had the weakest candidates and the New Jersey race was about that governor's corruption. What about the New York race, now that's sweet music that ole Rush, Sarah and all the other goofballs of the GOP will have to go back to being dingy, crazy and popping pills again.

A Grand Illusion » Thank you, teabaggers   November 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET

[...] You have to love that on the night when the GOP was supposed to make its big comeback, they actually.... [...]

Kevin Parris   November 4th, 2009 12:39 am ET

what a joke ...... the 6% of so called republicans who voted for someone who wasn't even in the race have disgraced America more than the Democrates ever will. And that is saying alot.

Kenneth Barr   November 4th, 2009 12:38 am ET

The Owens victory shows the shallowness of the extreme right wing. They sabotaged the race in a district that has been one of the most reliable Republican seats for 150 years. Great job, Rush, Glen and company.

Mike H   November 4th, 2009 12:37 am ET

There should be no excuses for the Democrats to fail getting their legislation enacted. The country as a whole appears to be on the side of progress, though my state – Texas – still seems somewhat stuck in the mud.... [sigh]

Forget about rallying the "Party of No Ideas" around the health care proposals and just get it done!

LuccaB   November 4th, 2009 12:36 am ET

Very good news here. We seem to be so impatient when the Democrats are in the majority. To win this district is good news that, perhaps, we have some patience at last. We have to keep our eye on the long term.

gg   November 4th, 2009 12:35 am ET

That's my bigest hope!! I am so happy!

Ndubueze Chuku   November 4th, 2009 12:35 am ET

Did anyone expect that Hoffman was going to win? You can't bring someone who has Sarah Palin's IQ and force him on New Yorkers. This is what you get. Hoffman and Sarah Palin have had their butts kicked.

daman74   November 4th, 2009 12:35 am ET

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Texas Liberal   November 4th, 2009 12:33 am ET

Well this race is one bright spot for us "progressives" this evening...
and it serves the "far right" a wake-up call in this usually Republican District. You cannot go "hard right" in the Northeast and win.
It might work in the South – but not in the Northeast.
I really think the the election results in both Virginia and New Jersey had more to do with the economy and jobs than any real "ideological" shift. Corzine had a respectable showing – just short of victory.

A Democrat won Mayor of Charlotte, NC, for the first time in decades,
and a Democratic popular openly lesbian candidate is the leading vote getter in the race to be Mayor of Houston, TX the nations 4th largest city ! (There will be a runoff)

Tonight's results should show my fellow progressives that we cannot rest on our laurels – we are going to have to fight for our progressive agenda in 2010 and beyond ! Could have been better...oh well.

Erik in Real Pennsylvania   November 4th, 2009 12:30 am ET

This wasa referendum on rightwingnuttery.

M   November 4th, 2009 12:29 am ET

I am so proud of Bill Owens and Dede Scozzafava.

Jose   November 4th, 2009 12:28 am ET

:-) so much for Palin Power huh. a repudiation of the tea bagger movement.

Rosebud   November 4th, 2009 12:24 am ET

To Palin, Beck, Rush and the rest of those carpet-tea-bagger cronies... pie in the face. Yuu got played by the WH and Rahm Emanuel!

Nicholas Martinez   November 4th, 2009 12:23 am ET

Congratulations Bill Owens!

Lou   November 4th, 2009 12:21 am ET

How funny! This is the race I was interested in because Palin opened her big flap about it and as usual another loss follows her. She should really go away and anyone she tries to support should shun her and publicly state that her support was not solicited nor wanted.

Neil Robertson   November 4th, 2009 12:21 am ET

Hey Repubs, you can have the two Governor's seats in NJ and VA. I'd much rather have a net gain in Democratic majority control of the US House – Governors do not get a vote on the federal government option version of the US Health Care Act of 2010 – newly-elected Congressman Owens from the NY 23rd DOES! And he is going to vote for THE most liberal version of the Act that Speaker Pelosi can get to the floor for a vote! HAR HAR HAR! Suck on it Republicans!
