The extension of unemployment benefits just give people a crutch and a reason not to try. Yet I don't hear anyone screaming about the deficit and refusing to cash an unemployment check.

If these businesses are holding out for the President to make a decision to keep the tax cuts permanently in place, I suggest you businesses rethink that idea. If we have a 10% unemployment rate, that mean that consumers are not buying your products, and if consumers are not buying, you will not be able to stay in business. Since these corporations have taken our jobs overseas, I suggest that you start finding ways for those overseas concumers to buy your product, the American consumer (middleclass0 is tapped out.

Any economist will tell you that during a recession the only solution is for the GOVERNMENT to SPEND money in order to stimulate the economy because during a recession, the PRIVATE SECTOR is cutting back and will not invest their own money until the economy has recovered.

Cutting more taxes like the GOP confesses does nothing because nobody will spend anyways. All it does it lowers the government cash flow for stimulating the economy.

One of the BEST ways a government can stimulate the economy is go to WAR. Hence, why Bush went to war in Iraq – to avoid a recession.

To the GOP, going to war is good way of stimulating the economy because most citizens do not see it as a government spending program.

And yes, JOB creations are the last economic indicators to improve. But don't worry, things will improve by the 2010 mid-term elections and by the 2012 Presidential Election. And the GOP knows this too – hence why they are scared!

First off, I want to say I am a free-market libertarian and I would have dealy liked to have see some leadership from the Bush administration on the problem that their reckless spending on double-front wars caused. But other than criticism for a job poorly done, they have offered absolutely nothing to help the situation, not in the final months of 2008 and not today.
It is easy to snipe when you are on the outside but you have to offer ideas, too.
Frankly, the last thing this country needs is gloom and doom from the White House. Yes, this is taking time, but the most important thing is to get people spending again, and move jobs home when possible. To that end, everyone could get together and extend the home buyer credit and expand the energy credits for homeowners doing improvements.

They are all worked up because they are not in power, because it's clear they want power for power's sake not for any beneficent reason.

It seems to me that Mr. Boehner has no problem pointing out what EVERYONE ELSE is doing wrong. But what is Mr. Boehner and his crew doing to turn things around. I'm exhausted listening to the constant sniping coming from the right. Stop moaning and do something for crying out loud!

It would have been much worse if the GOP under Boehner's ideas had been followed. How long would trickle-down tax cuts for the wealthy have take? When are we the taxpayers going to demand corporations that make billions in profits pay their fair share of the tax burden?

The President doesn't create jobs, the economy does. I think Mr. Obama deserves huge credit for his management of an unprecedented economic emergency. Most economic indicators are now pointing in the right direction, so job creation is sure to follow. The wait is frustrating for the unemployed, but in reality this slump has been remarkably short-lived given the scope of the initial crash.

So the GOP criticizes the white house, that's all they do – it's not news, it's business as usual.

Maybe if the Bush administration didn't allow wealthy corporations to outsource their unskilled labor, there would be more jobs for the uneducated beyond high school. Ir seems the jobs that are available require some kind of college education. If health care reform is passed, there will be thousands of jobs available in the health care sector but that requires an education and experience as well.

I was in the Midwest last May and the attitude was like "I don't have to do anything...there should be jobs." I suggested a one year health care program and the look of disdain at having to take a community college course to get a job. The unearned sense of entitlement for citizens who love the Bush administration but blame the current administration for the unemployment rate again display their ignorance. It is a disgrace to blame the current administration for any of the problems the US is facing.

It has been 11 months it is far beyond the time for this administration to take ownership for the country's state and stop blaming backwards.
And to those who say we have had 8 years of getting us into this... You and I both know that is an exaggeration and at this point is a moot point as things are getting worse not staying the same and not getting better.
The blame someone else mentality is what is making us a weak country, people need to take possession of their problems and work as hard as they can to improve things and that goes for the Government as well. This needs to apply to all parties and all people on all levels of Government. I am a former Republican and now I am an independent... Enough of the 2 parties and people following party lines.

Actually, Obama has said several times that jobs are usually the last part of the economy to recover. That is why they pushed through an extension in unemployment benefits.

Why does Boehner not give a few suggestions about what Obama might be doing to create those jobs immediately. If he knows the secret to doing so, then why not share it with all of us? I speculate that Boehner has no idea of what should be done, he is just criticizing because that is the preferred Republican tactic. Criticize each and every action of the Administration even if Obama is doing the same thing a Republican president would be doing.

This opposition is not the loyal opposition: it is not loyal to the nation or its people. Republicans are willing to let ordinary Americans suffer if that is how they can get back into power.

No matter what she does, it's labled as bizarre, weird, different, unusual. No doubt that if she didn't have any media limits, she would be criticized for being a glutton for attention, using the pro-life movement to push her agenda. She just can't win with the liberals so she doesn't bother. Way to go Sarah. Just do things as you see fit.

Part of the solution:
Encourage job creation through domestic industry. The specifics of how to do so may be a combination of tax breaks/tarrifs, consumer choices (Buy American, or similar), or some new form of regulation. We cannot continue to buy more than we produce. Our trade deficit and budgetary deficit are not entirely independent of each other.

While we're at it, lets focus on bringing back (or for the first time) industries whose profits end up with our...don't want to say enemies, but definately not our allies. Also beneficial would be industries whose products are minimally susceptible to economic conditions. Think food, energy, etc. As a whole it would be great to be self sufficient, trading for products better available elsewhere (out of season agricultural products/those that cannot be grown efficiently here, for example).

I've yet to see the breakdown of where the jobs are being lost. The Stimilus was not designed to save jobs at Microsoft, Intel, Dell, HP, etc. The jobs are being lost in the large companies. The stimulus helped jobs that are federal, state, and local or some form of government. Police have kept their jobs, firemen have kept their jobs, roads are being built, etc.

Also, does the American public realize that not all of the money has been used as of yet? Please tell me what spending measure of ANY type had an immediate affect. It will take some time. Again, all of the money has not been spent.

I'm for one tired of the GOP lap dogs calling the NJ (specifically) and Virginia votes a "referendum" on Obama. Corzine is just a terrible governor who has continuously raised property taxes. Yet Mr. Boehner and his republican colleagues have offered no solutions on how to create jobs. How about being part of the solution republicans.

The Republican National Committee needs to stop reporting that the vote here in New Jersey was a referendum on President Obama. Governor Corzine has failed on his promises and lead New Jersey into a deeper hole than we were in when he took office. He blames the economy which is troubling as we were in trouble before the fallout of the economy. Our vote here had nothing to do with President Obama and had everything to do with Governor Corzine not getting the job done. It wasn't about being Republican, Democrat or Independent. We needed change in New Jersey and not another four years of digging ourselves into a deeper hole. Even if the economy were doing well we would've voted Governor Corzine out as we'd still have the highest property taxes in the nation and more residents moving out of state than moving in.

Clearly the White House is clueless regarding this depression. All we have to show are higher taxes, more debt and a malaise that permeates America today. Congress is no better, they seem to forget that lowering tax rates across the board will create investment and in turn jobs. I urge all of us to vote out EVERY member of congress in the nearest elections. Ask our lawmakers to evoke term limits so we can remove elected officials on a regular basis

It will only get worse as long as this clueless administration is on charge. They tout all the upcoming green jobs while creating obstacles for the oil industry. We have huge natural gas deposits in out country but this administration just ignores that. I want clean energy as much as anyone and natural gas provides that. If all the heavy duty trucks were switched to run on natural gas that would almost be enough for us not to import oil. Converting those vehicles to run on natural gas doesn't cost a lot of money and emissions would be reduced.
I guess it's too easy to do......or no one has offered enough kickbacks to this chicago style of government we are stuck with for a few more years.

The White House is falling short on jobs according to the GOP. Is this the same GOP that under the first 5 years of the Bush adminstration had record outsourcing of US jobs, or the same GOP that brought down the US economy through uncontrolled spending, a refusal to finace their wars, or maybe the GOP that refused to regulate finincial institutions resulting in the finincial meltdown that we are currently trying to drag ourselves out of. Maybe its the GOP of private no bid contacts that paid out billions in support and construction money to certain firms in support of US forces in Iraq that resulted in questions as to where that money actually went. So which GOP is questioning the White Houses progress in cleaning up a GOP created problem?

This is funny, considering the GOP "fell short" on everything they touched during their epic failure under Bush.

I think this every time this phony talks: what is he doing to combat whatever it is that he's complaining about? Job creation? Nothing to contribute there. Until Republicans can show that they're doing anything but holding press conferences and issuing press releases, I will continue to rely on Democratic representatives to actually do any work. It doesn't always happen, but as a whole they're a lot more reliable than any obstructionist Republican.

Let's put this into perspective. The unemployment rate is the percentage of unemployed people who are collecting unemployment benefits today. This number does NOT account for the unemployed whose benefits have run out. That number could be anywhere from 15 to 20%.

The stimulus package in February only created temporary jobs or saved pre-existing jobs. When the temporary jobs vanish, the rate of unemployment will spike again.

It's time to put this number into perspective. Also, when you look at GDP being up in the third quarter, cash for clunkers was the main reason why that occurred. You'll see the GDP down again in the fourth quarter.

Don't let the headlines fool you.

Hey Bobo, I remember you said the unemployment rate would go over 8% if you don't pass the stimulus. Well, now what? You put us almost 1 trillion MORE in debt, and the unemployment went up to 10.2%. You were more than wrong on this. Your credibility is gone. Now you say "I told you unemployment would go to 10%." Now you want to spend 1 trillion MORE on health. If you are wrong 100% on economy, we don't trust you with health. Period. Do us all a favor. GET OUT!!!!!!

All the talk about the obstructionist philosophy of the GOP can't change the VERY obvious facts of the matter -

1) the Democrats can pass what they want, when they want, without GOP support

2) the Democrats have done absolutely nothing to restore the economy and create jobs

3) the only thing the GOP has slowed is the onset of yet another MASSIVE spending plan on health, which would only irritate the economy even further

Somehow, some way, the Liberal sheep will find a way to conflict these statements, but they are undeniable fact.

Wait, I thought you were the guys who said that "Government doesn't create jobs." Now this is all Obama's fault? Of course, then you don't have to assume any of the blame yourselves, or admit that we are in a downward cycle that is slowly coming back. Get over yourselves. It takes time to retool factories, to get buildings build and bridges repaired.

All these people can do is criticize. We don't want to hear from you unless you have solutions. Encourage the Republican governors to utilize their state's stimulus funds towards job creation, as opposed to witholding them to make the administration's efforts look ineffectual. The GOP's sole purpose for the past year has been to stall the nation's economic recovery in order to regain power. Newsflash: we're bouncing back IN SPITE of you.

I guess I should expect the republicans to say that. Ignore the fact that this financial mess was created by your party and it blew up while Bush was still in power. Ignore the fact that you were staring at abyss a year ago. Ignore the fact that the economy has significantly recovered in last year. Ignore the fact that government doesn't directly create the jobs in this nation.

I have faith in this nation and I see jobs coming back. I see that happening in my industry right now. This is going to blow in the face of republican party who is doing nothing but whine like a cry-baby.

The republicans are idiots. Why don't they come up with some ideas that are do able. instead of always bad mouthing what the White house does.

How about the fact that the republicans aren't constantly reminding everyone that they and Bush put us on the brink over a period of 10 years, and during this time they kept telling their blind faithful that don't put any more restrictive controls on them, they know what is best for America, trust them to do what is right. They have been making bad decisions based on instant profit under the republicans (no control policy) for years. No one watching or punishing. Bush and the republicans that locked their job continuance, to the success of these billionaires and the big corporate thieves, now have the audacity to blame the later developing problems across the board, on this president and the fact that he cant fix it overnight. We haven't even seen all of the damage come to the fore yet. Because of all of the cream being ripped out of these companies, they need to cut cost to the bone to now get back to some sort of profitability. Now that they have been given taxpayer money to pay their big salaries and bonuses, they are going to have to show true performance. We all know the fastest way to cut cost and show immediate profitability is to lay the workers off.
Boehner and his whole cadre of republican "Limbaughites" are fools, for this public stance, based on the hope that their constituency are as stupid as their sound bytes.

So many of the states used their stimulus funds to balance their budgets so the jobs that this would have created saved jobs for teachers, fire fighters, and others. Their unwillingness to help get the country back on track from where they left it is absurd. All the money they spent under 'w' is in the budget and not being spent under the table any more. They should help be a part of the recovery and be held accountable for the mess they left behind.

Just to keep it all in perspective, this recession started 23 months ago and 72 million jobs have been lost during that time frame and President Obama was in charge for 10 of those months.

Guess who was in charge during the other 13 months. President Obama has done what he can to help the unemployed by extending unemployment benefits and subsidizing COBRA payments so the unemployed families will still have health insurance..

And the Republican plan is......

Well maybe if the GOP would start working for the American people instead of saying "NO" all the time, just maybe, just maybe things would be different....

He hasn't been in office a year yet and still you all think he has a magic wand to make things all better....after 8 yrs of wild spending by the GOP it takes a while to get things back in order....THINK ABOUT IT GOP!!!!

Our economy started to lose steam right after 911. Like a snowball rolling down hill the problems became larger and larger. Fixing Bush's mess is like trying to make a hard right turn with the Queen Mary. It's not going to be done quickly.

It's a terrible thing to see ANYONE unemployed! However, when teachers, nurses and firefighters are standing in the unemployment line, things are pretty darn bad. It used to be that nursing & teaching were the "so-called" safe jobs, now what do our kids strive for?

The last 'administration' had a huge hand in creating the mess we're in now and all the republicans are doing is obstructing and criticizing Obama for not being able to wave a magic wand and make it all better. The republicans are a large part of what's slowing down improvement. They all need to be voted out in '10!

As the unemployment rate goes up, Obama's chances for re-election goes down. Unless he he does something to put people back to work in meaningful jobs that pay a decent salary (i.e. more than $50,000), he can kiss the white house goodbye.

Sounds like it's time for Joe Biden to come out and assure us that the stimulus has already saved or created 50 bajillion jobs.
