Before Saturday's event ended, Republican lawmakers tried to dramatize the size of the Democrats’ bill by unfurling all 1,900 pages–taped together–from the Capitol’s east front to the top of the House steps.

Washington (CNN) - Foes of the House Democrats' health care bill rallied outside the Capitol Saturday afternoon, hours before what many of them anticipate will be a setback for their position - approval of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's bill.

"It may pass out of the House tonight. We do realize that," Jenny Beth Martin, event organizer for the Tea Party Patriots, said. "But there is the Senate still. And we are going to leave no stone unturned and fight the government taking over our health care."

Chanting "Kill the bill" and "Hell, no" throughout the nearly 90-minute rally, the few hundred attendees kept up their opposition despite having a much lower turnout than a similar rally held on Thursday.

More than a dozen Republican lawmakers spoke to the protesters and encouraged them to keep up the fight by speaking to wavering Democrats and their families, friends and neighbors about the legislation.

"We are here for one purpose: Kill the bill!" said Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee.

"America doesn't need socialized medicine. We need jobs," Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Georgia, said.

"I diagnose [this bill] as a dead, rotting stinking fish that we will not eat," said Rep. Paul Broun, a Republican doctor from Georgia.

And in a fiery speech trying to convince the conservative "blue dog"

Democrats to vote against the bill, Rep. Joe Wilson, R-South Carolina, asked, "Are they a blue dog or a lap dog? We'll find out."

Earlier Saturday, President Barack Obama urged lawmakers in the House to pass the pending health care legislation.

"Millions of Americans are watching right now," the president toldreporters in a brief news conference in the White House Rose Garden. "Theirfamilies and businesses are counting on us. After all, this is why they sent us here: to finally confront the challenges that Washington had been putting off for decades. To make their lives better. To leave this country stronger than we found it."

Obama's comments came shortly after he had returned to the White House from Capitol Hill, where he met with the House Democratic leadership.

They dont even know the specifics of what they are against. It is true HC needs to be overhauled...as every other social program in our Nation...but progress must not stop today. The true bill will be outlined in the days and months to come...under political fire...while some Americans are sacrificed by the loophole in this blanket broad signing. All they really have is a financial earmark with a gaping hole.

Hey GOP/Haters The Last Health Care Reform This Country Had Was In Mid-1960's, 30+ years ago! If The GOP Thinks This Is Just Paper, Then Truly They Can't SeeThe Forest For The Trees!

Who care!?!?! It passed!!!! Hooray!!!

Brian, Detroit, MI   November 7th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

How many years? How many years did it take for the Republicans to push through a Trillion dollars in war spending, most of which was never even sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Most of it was given to companies to make better military vehicles, better weapons, most of which didn't work. Can we get our money back for the ones that didn't? NOPE. Republicans love spending taxpayer dollars for meaningless crap. What they hate is Democrats spending any money, at all.
No, this healthcare bill won't solve all of our problems, but it's a first step. Something the Republicans could have done, but didn't.

T'SAH from Virginia   November 7th, 2009 11:18 pm ET

Why do HUNDREDS of people think they speak for the entire country... The ones with the loudest mouth are the minority and they are so LOUD, they don't even realize their voices are not being heard!!!

ALSO, if the REPUBLICAN'Ts are encouraging people to KILL THE BILL, then why are they offering a Health Care Bill or CLAIMING they have a Health Care Bill that is BETTER!!! They are actually protesting against themselves....ROTFLMAO... JEEZ, how stupid can they be!!!

Jeffery Meaux, Sr.   November 7th, 2009 11:16 pm ET

My hope is that the people in congress don't vote because of how their frat brothers (or sisters) vote, meaning those in the republican party or the democratic party. I would like to see the day where each one is an independent thinker and vote for what is best for the American people back home. Read the bill, if you think it good for our country vote YES, if it isn't vote NO. I know this is a simple solution but if followed I believe that Congress would have an approval rating better than 23%

Reaganomics Leads To Feudalism   November 7th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Why is it that these same rednecks, who are sooooo opposed to government spending on healthcare, are perfectly fine with us spending unlimited amounts of federal tax dollars on weapons, invasions, occupations, nation-building in other countries, etc.

In fact, some of these rednecks even encourage it.

What good is it going to do us to conquer the world and force our will on everyone else if we can't even take care of our own here at home?

Do these rednecks really want the United States to be a military empire with a FEUDALIST economy? If they had THEIR way, that's exactly what we would be!

CBO and the U. S House not in order and they are acting like hens!

AMA member   November 7th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Many if not most physicians do NOT support the Democrat House bill despite CNN's and the White House's reporting that the AMA endorses it. Physicians that were affiliated with the AMA are no longer supporting the AMA (not joining or rejoining). Most physicians are now no longer members of the AMA. The latest endorsement by the AMA (actually trustees/ president) have been denounced by even AMA members including AMA delegates. The AMA Delegates are now pushing for a vote to revoke the AMA's endorsement. I'm surprised that CNN hasn't reported on the latter, only that the AMA endorses this bill.

Hundreds protest? Hundreds? Meanwhile millions wait. Okay "tea partiers" I have a question- actually 2 questions,
1st Question I get why the insurance companies are against this (after all if UPS or Fed Express could get rid of the Post Office and charge whatever the hell they want for sending packages I could understand them wanting to do so). I also get why the GOP leadership is against this bill as well (one need only lokk at how long they were out of power after being against Social Security) But why oh why are regular people against this?

2nd Question. If it really is about te money wher the hell were you guys when George W Bush decided we should spend 12 million dollars an hour on a war against a counrty that never attacked us? It has been a while but when W took office we were looking forward to surplusses as far as the eye could see. But that didn't seem to bother you did it?

Sherrie   November 7th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

CNN, I heard Lou Dobbs say you TRY to be in the center, but from what I see..........CNN, only prints comments that are positive to Obama. Others at my office have commented on the same thing. Interesting because every comment seems to be printed when I blog on Fox web sites. Are you trying to beat msnbc in your bias?

KLS   November 7th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Only in America can something like this happen!!!!

My sister-in-law developed grand mal seizures 30 years ago after the birth of their daughter. She has been on a variety of different medications over the years, some have been effective in controlling the seizures but only for a limited time. A few years ago she started a new kind of medicine that had been very successful. Two months ago my brother's company changed insurance plans to save money. The new insurance would not pay for the medicine she needs. Her doctor wrote a letter explaining her situation and my brother pleaded with the insurance company. The insurance company agreed she could have the medicine with a co-pay of $480 for a 30-day supply. The prior insurance had a $25 co-pay. Thursday evening she was rushed via an ambulance to the ER because her seizures were uncontrollable. They gave her the medicine she needed and her seizures stopped so she was sent home. One would think it would be a lot less expensive to provide the medicine what works instead of having go to the ER. How many Americans can afford $480 a month for any kind of drug!!

Bull   November 7th, 2009 9:57 pm ET

This bill and the DNC direction is all wrong for America.

Obama is a Disaster   November 7th, 2009 9:56 pm ET

2010, and 2012, cannot get here fast enough. Obama is a disaster.

Eric   November 7th, 2009 9:53 pm ET

Let them protest. Its a free country and that the beauty of America is that you are free to state your opinion. But quite honestly they are really wasting their breath. Liberals are going to win this vote and this bill will pass. So they might as well start getting ready to accept it. I truly wonder how many of these people really even know half of what this bill stands for and what it would create for American citizens. I bet if they really sat down and listened they might actually be for it and not against it.

Grant   November 7th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

I wonder if the people protesting prospective health care bills are aware that the United States is the only industrialised western country that does not ensure all of its citizens have health care coverage. Think about it. By some estimates, 36 million Americans are uninsured. This is something Americans should be ashamed of. Speaking for Republicans (the party of NO), House Minority Leader John Boehner has said that with the US unemployment now at 10,2 percent, there was a need to defeat "this job-killing bill." The logic escapes me. If people are losing their jobs, they are also losing their health care. Most of them will have no "affordable options". The US system fails people who become unemployed. Obviously, "let the markets work" is a failure to when applied to health care, at least for tens of millions of Americans. The US spends far more on health care – both per person and as a share of national income than other industrialised western countries, yet with no improvement in the quality of care; the US lags behind western European country averages in key indicators like life expectancy and infant mortality. So, we clearly have a broken, expensive system that generates billions in profits for private insurance companies but at the cost of millions of uninsured Americans and growing personal bankruptcy for people facing huge medical bills. I wonder what these protesters would do if they suddenly lost their health care. Perhaps move to Canada?

Larry   November 7th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

All I can say is Obama is pushing HIS agenda and not listening to the American taxpayers. I'm a registered Democrat and I can't wait to NOT LISTEN to the extreme left Democrats and Obama in 2010 and 2012. They might be speaking for their jobs.....but, I won't be listening! Republican Virginia Foxx of NC is 66 years old – she's on government-run health care.

What a hypocrit she is – like the rest.

They don't want to destroy the bill, they want to destroy our President and the little people in this country that have done without decent insurance for decades. (They sure have it tho).

Bob   November 7th, 2009 8:46 pm ET

Wow. Hundreds of protestors. The teabaggers are right! America is opposed to the health care bill! How could I have been so blind!

marge   November 7th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

I'm watching a report now about the horror of Islamists who feel compelled to terrorize Americans. I see no difference in these fools than I do in the teabaggers who demonize our president and those senators who stand on the steps of the Capitol and incite, with their lies, Americans to overthrow this administration. And yet no one in your newsroom is drawing this parallel. How can we (rightly) call extremist Muslims terrorists, while ignoring the terrorists in our own Congress and the hoards of frightened and ill-educated followers they incite?

independent   November 7th, 2009 8:42 pm ET

Funny how life works. These people so against health insurance for all feel so secure in their jobs. I wonder how they will feel once they lose their job and so goes their insurance... Could they also send us taxpayers a check for their parents and grandparents medicare that WE pay for? You see, we would pull ourselves up by our bootstraps but healthcare execs and wallstreet have stolen are laces–

demsrulz   November 7th, 2009 8:42 pm ET

Its too bad the senate does not represent the citizens of this country in terms of population... If so the dems would have an even stronger majority and this thing would be done already... Keep up the great work democrats ! Never mind what the union for corporate america(repugs) want!

The Democrats need to pass single payer non-profit universal health care. Then let the Republicans, blue dogs and for profit health insurance companies continue their temper tantrums.

This President and the Democrats need to stop trying to get help from the republicans and just get things done.

Do health care now then on to energy and immigration. The hell with the Republicans.

valwayne   November 7th, 2009 8:25 pm ET

Elections have consequences and givng the Democrats Control of Congress and now the White House has led to 10.2% UNEMPLOYMENT and trillions upon trillions of debt. And tonight they are voting for the Government to take over our healthcare system which will give them control of every aspect of our lives from whether we smoke to whether we are too fat or too thin. It will also cost Trillion upon trillions more, and the cost and taxes will drive UNEMPLOYMENT even higher. The American people are opposed to this bill tonight, but they will ram it down our throats. We are powerless to prevent this until 2010. Every Democrats voting to cram this down our throat needs to be defeated!

... and what do these Americans want? They couldn't tell you – just keep repeating what they believe they don't want. "Stay the course" while the insurance agencies and Big Pharma celebrate "mission accomplished!" – asked later – the naysayers will be asked why – but will only reply. "I don't recall" .... health reform has been needed since the Truman Era ... how much longer shall we wait?

Look at the number of comments on the ticker issue and in relation to what they are about. Palin and neggies about Obama bring hundreds of comments. Either gnashing at Palin or soaking up the rays for defense of "tha one", Amazing at the limited commentary from people on issues and real news. Like the old saying "great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss things, and Small minds discuss people". This monstrosity of a health care ruse will make lbj's great society look like an after school program. Uneducated people floating on the vapors really dont care why or what, just WHO!!!! SMALL PEOPLE BIG IDEAS? TAX ME BABY!!! The new American motto BTW!!!

ejmounsey Granville Ohio   November 7th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

That noisy bunch do not represent me. I want health care reform and nearly everyone I know does also. If the GOP is right that the government would make decisions, at least they are accountable to the people every two years. The insurance companies are not.

New Father   November 7th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

Besides the 13% tax increase on the businesses that create jobs, I think it is only fair that everyone should give the government more money. Rich or P.elosi, O.bama, O.r, R.eid, look how well they have done. They did such good a job after getting unemployment over 10% and running up a $1.4 trillion, they voted themselves a fat raise. Well worth the money I think. So tell them to vote yes on every bill that gives more money to them.

normajean   November 7th, 2009 7:45 pm ET

Just one question....They all yell."kill the bill" Do they want to stand up and be counted when thousands of men, women and children die for lack of health care?

Jennifer Ashland   November 7th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

Why on earth is Congress overhauling our nation’s health-care system with a costly new government spending program during the worst economic downturn and highest unemployment rates since the 1980s? With a jobless rate of 10.2% and 15.7 million Americans out of work, this massive 1,990-page bill will cost U.S. taxpayers $1.055 trillion over the next 10 years, much of it funded by a taxpayer surtax. Our country already owes $56 trillion in entitlement obligations to China, Saudia Arabia and other countries. Yet this onerous bill will add trillions of dollars to our ballooning national deficit, which has doubled since 2000 to nearly $12 trillion for the first time in history.

To make matters worse, this bill funds abortions – all at U.S. taxpayer expense.

In a word, this bill represents a socialistic takeover of our privatized health care system. The Senate majority will no doubt pass it, as well.

We can't afford onerous legislation that will lead to burdensome new taxes, higher federal deficits that generations to come will be shouldering, and onerous government intrusion into American's lives. Let's hope the U.S. Supreme overturns Congress by ruling it unconstitutional.

Anonymous   November 7th, 2009 7:31 pm ET
