Washington (CNN) - The House of Representatives passed a sweeping health care bill Saturday night with a tight vote of 220-215, making it the biggest expansion of health care coverage since Medicare was created more than 40 years ago.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act, or H.R. 3962, restricts insurance companies from denying coverage to anyone with a pre-existing condition or charging higher premiums based on gender or medical history. It also provides federal subsidies to those who cannot afford it and guarantees coverage for 96 percent of Americans, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

However, turning the bill into law remains uncertain.

Congratulations to President Obama and Congressional Democrats! This is a huge step forward. I am so proud of my party and my President for finally tackling this crucial issue.

Reading these comments, it strikes me that the Christian right seems to be acting very un-Christian like these days. Maybe thats why your numbers are shrinking.

It also strikes me that the comments of the right wingers are largely incoherent and extremely nasty. I'm glad these mean and uneducated people don't represent my party.

Way to go Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congress. Now its up to the Senate. We are counting on you. Please don't let the American people down!

George Synan   November 8th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I live in Massachusetts which has compulsory health insurance. We now have the highest insurance premiums in the country.

I believe a big part of the heath insurance problem... is health insurance. Aetna just made a nice little profit for itself. I had to fight and argue about an issue with them for my wife. I won in the end, but the energy expended was exhausting. Do you see how much health providers get paid through health insurance? Not much

We need to abolish health insurance as a health plan, take better care of ourselves, and lower costs and premiums. This bill won't do it.

D.   November 8th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Hopefully the senate is a more serious forum, and senators will read the bill. The over one trillion bill taken in advance is something to consider and let cool heads prevail (forget the "agenda" of the democrats' left base and think what is good for the country! forget the "just say no" agenda as well! Do what is good to people).

Mike from Mass   November 8th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

As a disabled American, and a survivor of cancer, I am glad that this bill will have a serious chance of passing. No insurance company will have power over me or my family anymore!

On a lighter note

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
IT PASSED! YES!
KEEP IT UP.

This is such wonderful news. Finally this country can step up to the plate and take care of those who cannot afford the out of control insurance companies' policies. To the few and I mean few detractors, you people never cease to amaze me. It has been proven by the CBO that this plan would reduce the costs currently being inflicted on our society. Add to that a majority in all polls want a public option. We are down the scale on Infant Mortality and the insuracen companies have been getting away with extortion for the last +50 years. Without the yearbook answers and talking points you detractors cannot come up with anything credible to the debate. Only reason why you're jumping up and down like ants on a hot plate is because you're angry that you've been tossed out of the majority and lost the White House. It's as simple as that, but keep on yelling because no one beyond your right wing cesspool gives a rat's behind about your nonsense. And when all the smoke clears, we'll be on the right side of history and you'll be the example of what not to be and what's bad in this country.

Michael   November 8th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

It's a START in the right direction! Thanks President Obama and Speaker Pelosi. The time has come to CHANGE a system that is badly broken. The right-wing-nuts have shown once again that it's their $$ they care about and not the American people.

It is so interesting that the Republicans are sooo worried about cost now.. It is a false cover for their controllers , the Corporations that own them.

Where was the huge concern about spending during the last eight years on the two Wars that Bush STARTED ? He SPENT more of our kids future than ALL of the previous presidents put together!!

Why didn’t the Republicans initiate their own healthcare legislation during that time??

Where is all the OUTRAGE about that ?

After all of it, Name ONE positive thing that the Republicans accomplished during their eight years of total control.. Just even one thing.

John Magnusson   November 8th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

I think the problem with a lot of people who oppose this legislation is the fact that they really don't understand the problem. In a nutshell, we end up paying for the health needs (anyway) of the uninsured through premium hikes. When person requires help for a health problem and is not able to pay, then the health care provider will not take a loss on those costs, but rather raises rates on all of its health care to cover that person's health care costs, which is then passed on to insurance companies, who then pass it on to the people paying health insurance premiums. Also, each time a business touches something, they add at least 20% on to that bill. Another cost we now have is bankruptcy. With each person that files bankruptcy because of health costs, much of that person debt is also passed on to the whole population. And mostly, taking care of the poor has been something that most every civilized society and religion has done for all time.

southernhrt....Yes we pay for our health care of course it doesnt come free, but check out your facts our tax rate is still lower than yours we have a longer life expectancy and we pay less of of our gdp on health care than you do AND we don't pay a cent when see a doctor (our own choice by the way) or go to a hospital for an operation...not one cent! plus we have very high quality care..no one goes bankrupt here to pay for medical bills and no one is refused health care for ANY reason...of course no system is perfect and we are always working on ways to improve it our line ups for elective surgery are sometimes longer than we would like' but it is elective surgery don't forget..As the most powerful and richest country in the world i think it is a disgrace that people go without health care in your country or in the least in many cases lose everything they have worked for in their lives just to pay medical bills..i wish you all good luck

Eric   November 8th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

would you people please stop with this socialism crap you keep cramming down sane peoples throats...last time I checked there are quite a few democratic countries with a government run health care system and now (pending this bill passes the senate) we will be one too...looking out for the health of the people of this country is not socialism or facism it's humanism...if it passes and you don't want it use the insurance you have now...DEAL WITH IT

indiana voter   November 8th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

@Marie Laveaux

You are the typical liberal democrat that does not know anything about an issue but would rather see America hurt, just to "get back" at the Republicans because you stupidly believe that Bush is the reason for all your troubles, including hurricane Katrina apparently. You are a sad example of an American, when you are happy for any government takeover of anything.

Death Panel Sarah   November 8th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

It sickens me to see how greedy Americans have become. What happened to "helping the less fortunate"? What does the Statue of Liberty say? Give us your poor, your weak.....so they can die here for lack of healthcare?

What Would Jesus Do about healthcare?

Just remember, all of you will face Saint Peter one day with this opposition to helping the less fortunate of GOD's children on YOUR list.....Will you be able to stay in Heaven???

indiana voter   November 8th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

So many Democrats on here that don't know anything about this issue, but still touting it as a victory. Not to mention these same people don't know history that well either. Liberals and their policies are going to be the death of this country. This will be the first time in U.S. history that a major piece of legislation affecting one sixth of the economy will be passed strictly along party lines. It is a sad day if this bill passes the Senate, but hopefully there are enough sensible people in the Senate that are still listening to Americans.

Your comment is really nonsensical. I find it baffaling that people are willing to think that people who are struggling are living off the backs of others. Not only is your comment insulting, it is also illogical. There are plenty of people who work hard everyday, but cannot live off minimal wage. Wages are not equivelant to the rise in living expenses. Healthcare is one of the expenses that is rising beyond what people can afford which is why most business are no longer offering it. As a healthcare practinoner, I am astonish how people like you are so selfish as to stop others find having quality healthcare. If you understood the system, you will realize it cost more money to pay the medical bills of the uninsure than providing affordable healthcare.

Death Panel Sarah   November 8th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

These politicians better remember one thing -– the American working force (and that include those people who are laid off) do not want to continue supporting those people who live on welfare. Obama says he won't sleep as long as those who 'want' a job don't have a job. Well, he better get off of his rear end and tell those on welfare that he won't sleep until those too lazy to even look for a job get off of welfare and start supporting this country. These are the people who are killing this country.

Marie Laveaux   November 8th, 2009 11:42 am ET

Congratulations to the President and all who voted to pass this legislation. To the rest of you, tough luck! I guess you'll have to swallow the same bitter pill we had to for the last eight years, but you'll get used to it eventually, like we did. Sadly, this bitter pill is good for all of us, but you don't care. And to Nat NYC, I am a Katrina victim, I didn't want to be put in any special class, had more than enough insurance to rebuild, and am thankful for what ever assistance I got from FEMA and the many volunteers who came to help, but I am one of the fortunate ones. You don't know jack about what life is like down here, so you ought to not say anything. When New York was hit in 9/11, I cried my eyes out, and was glad you all got federal aid. What's your problem?

Joe in NJ   November 8th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Regardless of what happened last night, if and when the bill does pass the Senate, it will probably be much different than its current version.

Dr.Mike   November 8th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Taking money from rich and giving it to poor, by taxing the rich. Well questions is who is rich? Majority of the upper class have moved to upper middle and middle class in this recession, some have gone to lower middle class. Rich people are not recession proof. Dealerships and corporations are going out of business left and right, so those rich owners are now in unemployment group.
However, as a doctor I believe that definitely some reform should be made to cover the uninsured. I do not know if this is the solution. First of all as a nation we are broke which mean we do not have any money, we are living on loans from other countries. Now to pay for this bill we have to borrow more money, which eventually is going to catch with us, when I do not know, but probably in our lifetime or in our childrens lifetime we will have economic collapse, we wont be able to pay the loan interest. Which mean dollar will be worth nothing, store shelves will be empty, gas pumps dry and so, you can put two and two together.
Yes govnmt says we will tax the rich. I would be very interested to see what percentage of upper class went into middle. I know few who their business went belly up and now they are unemployed.

Anyways, just some food for thought, if you think anything in this world is for free, I challenge you to look in the mirror and you'll see a naive person probably with good intentions.

For myself I really do not care that much, what worries me is the debt we are leaving to our kids and future generations.

Fired up yet?   November 8th, 2009 11:30 am ET

To all of those out there who do/did not agree with this healthcare reform bill, I would like to pass this along just in case you missed it and in case you need it for future reference. This is about the part of this bill that says that if you do not buy into it, you will be fined and possibly could go to jail, keeping in mind that the Pelosi team has not put the wording out there yet on exactly how this will work. Last night, Congressman Anthony Weiner, NY (who voted for the bill), said that if anyone was "slapped" with jail time for not buying into this healthcare bill that he would "serve the time for you." He stopped short of saying that he would pay the fine for you. Tuck this away, you may need him to live up to his "promise" from last night. Moreover, for those who think this healthcare reform bill is the best thing that ever happened to you, I would ask that if this happens that you "serve your own time," and that you pay the fine with the same enthusiasm you have for the passage of this bill.

Gary   November 8th, 2009 11:29 am ET

I think we need health care reform. But I can't support this bill. It is way too costly and put together with very little thought. There are many fine examples of well run health care programs throughout the world. Why we couldn't do something on a smaller scale now while evaluating these examples to determine the right path for us is beyond me. It says to me this is not about the people it is about the votes and that is just sad.

Rob Johnson   November 8th, 2009 11:11 am ET

That's funny, I thought if this bill passed, America as we knew it would be destroyed forever?

All joking aside, if this bill is so terrible, the GOP can always revoke it if they regain control of Congress. Nothing can be done politically that cannot be undone through political means.

Gar   November 8th, 2009 11:11 am ET

I kinda like Obama during the election but dislike just about everything he's done since. This healthcare reform with public option, taxes, no malpractice reform. Pres. Obama's spending and programs are making me sick. We still have the Lobbiests, the corruption, no tranparency, congresspeople voting on bad bills they didn't even read. I'm independent and voted for too many Democrats last election....I don't think I'll vote for Obama or any other Democrat in the next election. We need someone who has fiscal responsibility! Someone who doesn't make more taxes, more entitlement or more government! This is pathetic! Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barrak Obama are all pathetic! If the Repubs take over congress they need to impeach this guy before he does more damage.

PurpleMajority   November 8th, 2009 10:41 am ET

Looks like the idea of spending far more than can be afforded is alive and well in the House of Representatives. Too bad so little was made of how poorly written this bill is. The subheading says it all: "To provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and reduce the growth in health care spending, and for other purposes."

Note it doesn't say to reduce the cost of health care, just to reduce the growth in health care spending. It also doesn't index to inflation any portion: the amount on which the 5.4% surcharge is levied or the total amount of salaries on which businesses with pay the payroll penalty. So, like the AMT, every year more Americans will pay more.

This bill is a fiscal Hall of Fame wreck in every way.

dr in us   November 8th, 2009 10:41 am ET

Cheer all you want, but as a doctor this is going to decrease the quality of care.
The reason why is that many doctors will not accept or limit the number
Of public option patients they see. Also we already have a critical shortage of family practice and internal
Medicine doctors. Who will now go to medical school? We already need to import docs from foriegn countries.
By 2030 there will also be a critical shortage in all surigcal specialities. Just beware what you want.

Bottom line

More patients – less doctors = less quality of care and longer waits

Already it is a 3 week wait to see me. Once this passes probably will be 2 to 3 months if you have the public option. If I decide to accept it

tommoriarty   November 8th, 2009 10:12 am ET

The house has passed a health care bill.

There will be a revolt, one way or another.

Rose   November 8th, 2009 10:12 am ET

All of you that support this ugly bill deserve what will happen when you are told what you can and can not eat. The government will control vending machines with labels of unhealthy foods. Maybe that is not a bad thing but I don't want the government telling me what I can and can not eat but I guess that is okay with all of you who think this is a good thing.

I also hope you like the fact that if you don't enroll in this ugly plan down the road you can pay a huge fine or go to jail. This is not the U.S. anymore.
ALL OF YOU THAT THINK THIS WILL BE FREE, THINK AGAIN. IT WILL NOT BE FREE

bouliane   November 8th, 2009 10:11 am ET

congrats united states from canada although 40 years later than us. Ask canadians what we are most proud of and it is health care access for all and the way we treat the less fortunate of us. It is comforting to know that when the u.s. goes into another country with their mighty army they are in it for the same reasons...to help the people but you have to start at home.

Seid   November 8th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Fighting for rich people, ignoring the needs of the majority of Americans, over protecting coorporate profits-is that all the core value of Rep. party?

In Canada we use 70% of public funds and 30% from private sector to deliver a universal health care but no one labled the goverment as a Communist. we neither promote soicalism ideology. I belive US can afford to offer a Universal Health plan to the people of America.

May Nancy Pelosi and her goons all rot in Hell.

diane08   November 8th, 2009 10:10 am ET

GI Joe hit the nail on the head. It's sad how Republicans have been brainwashed into supporting a platform that goes against their own self interest by the leaders of their party, whose only motivation for killing healthcare is to protect the millions of dollars they receive from insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

Poor (and most likely uninsured) Republicans will complain, shout, protest, march, throw tea parties against health care reform, but how much do you want to bet they'll be the first one in line for government insurance when they or their family gets sick and needs healthcare?

Keith A Sillsbury   November 8th, 2009 10:08 am ET

I still don't want to believe there are still people posting threats and mis-information on these comments here. lets get somethings straight people, The American people want reform, will vote for those who support it in the next election, are willing to pay a tax increase of 3% (if necessary but it won't be), and are proud that we can help fellow Americans live better healthier lives without fear of not knowing how to pay for it. This surely signals the end to the republican party as it stands. They have splintered into three parties of difference, The religious sect we'll call the right wing nuts, The neocons whoem want to live in the past ( about 150 years) and cocerned right. The concerned we all can live with because they actually have the peoples best intrests in mind but are under attack and threat by the sect who take money from wall street and vote for their best intrests. if anyone would look up federal budgets over the past years the break down of spenditures you can see how the money saved in other areas will lead to a savings in healthcare with reform. continue the fight America!

Jane   November 8th, 2009 10:07 am ET

This is a mistake. People can applaud now but in a few years they will be crying. If it passes in the senate you can say goodby to great health care. It is written to rid the US of ANY private care–it is hidden in the scripts of legal garble and sectors can be changed at any time by congress as they deem fit. If it is so great American's must demand ALL elected officials participate in the program and NOT be grandfathered in regardless of when they started serving. Mark my words it is not going to cover those who do not have it now –they will not participate. I will be staying tuned to see how the legal aspect works when someone is "fined" for not buying heathcare. Truly the democrats are stomping on individuals constitutional rights. And for those of you who beat your chest that you are entitled to health care as a right and not a privilage–how do you react to your government forcing you to buy it against your will if you don't want it???

I am SOOOO sick of this.....will the Democrats please just pass this bill so we can begin seeing the demise of the Democratic Party and this Administration in full speed and get this country back in order!

The passengers of the Titantic tried to jump off the ship, it appears that many Dems are jumping on. Even if a final bill passes and Obama signs it, it doesn't matter...know why? Because the GOP are going to run a highly effective campaign against the Dems next year and in 2012 and they are going to rescind just about all of the legislation approved by the Democrats. The Democrats are allowing the GOP to look like the party who clean up behind the massive mess they and Obama left. The Dems are in the process of nailing their own coffin and they are too stupid to see it! You Dems have absolutely NO CLUE!

Why do so many see this as goverment" take over"? Our lives , our parents lives and our children's lives have all been made better by goverment programs.
Social Security, Medicare- most elderly not only have them but need them. Unemployment insurance, disaster relief, emergency support and action are the only way many survive earthquakes ,floods, and other occurrances. Schools, student loans, medicaid make our children safer.
If you have insurance, congratulaitons. No pre-exisiting conditions, lucky you. Have the money for private insurance? WOW! But for many of us we need some sort of alternative to the practices of private insurnace companies. Allow those 47 million unisured and the 30 million under insured to also feel a little safer without name calling.

Tony   November 8th, 2009 10:04 am ET

The GOP stands for NO! NO jobs! NO Health Care Reform! NO Clean Renewable Energy! If the GOP were in office during this critical time of crisis there is little doubt US would collapse & become a 3rd-World Country. Democrats must keep fighting for a brighter future. One can not count on GOP for anything, but failure.

To all of you who hate capitalism and to whom profits are a dirty word, you need to sell your stocks and mutual funds, because you are the ones to whom the profits go. And maybe the company you work for stops making a profit. Oh, I forgot, you all work for the government, which couldn't balance a budget if it took 100% of everybody''s income. Can you say "hypocrites".

Obama = WORST president EVER   November 8th, 2009 9:57 am ET

oh, yeah! way to throw the health system down the toilet by 5 votes, liberals! dopes.

Terry from West Texas   November 8th, 2009 9:57 am ET

The US Senate is the most regressive institution in the nation. A few Senators can gridlock the nation, and there are more than a few who are willing to do just that. That dismal institution had only one bright period in its history, when Lyndon Johnson was Majority Leader, when the institution actually functioned to help the nation. I am not at all optimistic.

Everyone please write your senator and ask for his or her support for the health reform bill. We in Texas are handicapped as our two Senators (Cornyn and Hutchison) are the worst we have elected in a century, so count Texas out when it comes to helping the nation. However, there are lots of Democrats who have absolutely no principles but they really want to keep their jobs, so they can be influenced. If your Senator is a Republican, don't waste your stamps.

Kevin from Canada   November 8th, 2009 9:56 am ET

I can not believe people in the U.S. were actually opposed to this bill. Having been able to travel all over the world, during the debate of this heatlh care bill I have come to one major conclusion. Some people in the U.S are some of the most socially backwards people on the planet. And I am not talking in with regards to Socialism either though this word had been said alot mostly by people who have grasp of the actual meaning of the word. This is just basic humanity that you do this as people not a political agenda, hello folks you are the last country in Western Civilization to execute such a plan. Welcome to the 21st Century America it is about time!

Bob Auld   November 8th, 2009 9:55 am ET

Congrats to the Dems! Shame on the GOP!! When the US joins the rest of the civilized world and starts to care for the poor rather than cater to the rich and powerful, it's time to cheer you on. Most Americans will not likely suffer from this legislation but many forgotten souls will realize a sense of relief. Next step, pass laws to stop the Pharmaceutical Giants from advertising "designer" medications.

Bob Auld, Toronto

Rob DePour   November 8th, 2009 9:55 am ET

I agree with all of the people shouting socialism. The thing is that our country's downward spiral into socialism actually began over 100 years ago when fire houses were taken away from the private sector and managed by the government. All because it became common practice for firefighters from one company to disable fire hydrants near a fire in a competitor's area. I wish we could just go back to the time when people could die quietly for the sake of profit. I mean really, if your house is on fire, why should I have to pay for it to be extinguished? Furthermore, if you are being robbed, why should my tax dollars go towards saving you or putting the criminal behind bars? They didn't do anything to me. Schools and libraries?!?! I don't have kids and sure as hell don't read. Come to think of it, the military is publicly funded. Does that mean a military/socialist government?!?! The end is near!!!

With the house passing this massive spending Bill its sad day in America.!
Wake up America! We are 1.4 TRILLION Dollars in Debt and now we are spending another 1.3 Trillion over 10 years! When is this madness going to stop ?This White house needs to put away its check book and now they are spending our hard earned Tax dollars at a alarming Rate.!
We could cut spending if the we can pass a law that Liberals pay for their Liberal policys, but yea that would nt work because they like spending other people "s money!
The goodnew s is that 787 Billion stimulas package must be working un-employment is 10.2 % rate . A 27 year high!!
Keep up the Good work Liberals is there borrowed more money to spend?

What a laughable, laughable joke. Pelosi calls it bipartisan because of the 1 GOP member supporting it.

How about looking at the Nays, Madam Speaker. A large portion of Democrats and almost every single Republican voted together against this bill - should give the Senate something to think about.

The Dems are too deep into this now. It's over. They will have to support it in the Senate, and this terrible financial disaster will ensue.

Jeff   November 8th, 2009 9:51 am ET

Uh oh, This doesn't bode well. I remember when the 1964 Civil Rights Act passed, the naysayers predicted that this would someday lead to a person of color becoming President. The end of democracy, the final days of the Republic, wars in the middle east, and civilization as we once knew it.
How much more dangerous will this health care bill become if passed by the Senate?

a citizen   November 8th, 2009 9:50 am ET

Why should legal Americans pay for people who are illegal immifrants. They are already taking jobs Legal Americans would like.
The immigrants from other countries do not pay taxes, are given everything, while we do without and have to put up with there actions because they will scream discrimination if they have to obey laws like us. This country can not afford to give all immigrants coverage and illigal are not only lieing and getting away with it, but are actually rewarded for breaking the law simply by being here. Why pay for all residents of the United States. Its crazy! No wonder they treat us like they do. Other countries make them behave. This bill would only continue the injustice to hard working, legal Americans

Death Panel Sarah   November 8th, 2009 9:47 am ET

What's in it for you? Do you work for the ins. companies, or are they paying you to post?

Andreea MD   November 8th, 2009 9:45 am ET

Insurance companies are the cause of health care.Like banks no limits and common sense.Freedom means options, choices.Instead to regulate insurance system they choose the cosly CHANGE what is gone affect our pockets for now in 20 years at least.I would like to know what big changes were made so far for the good of American people for the small guys?I dont understand how come Madam Pelosi is over there if she likes to spent money better I can help her.

Debby   November 8th, 2009 9:44 am ET

Well since the goverment is going to be the next insurance competetor it would be nice to know what they are offering like a regular insurance companies do so we can have a choice. I haven't read yet if you need 5 tests to determine a medical condition that they will cover that. I know my insurance company does. Ask any cancer or heart patient how many tests they go through with each test costing about 3 grand or more each. This bill if passed is really scary if the government isn't dishing out info. on what it will provide for people.

Rich Douglas   November 8th, 2009 9:43 am ET

Health Care for All...Social Security under FDR gave our older citizens diginity and have kept millions of older women & men out of Poverty, The Civil Rights Amendment under LBJ not only gave hope and job opportunities to our Black Population but to women and all other Miniorities. Now just as these laws increased our welfare and prosperity, this Health Care initiative will help all of our businesses to be more competitive and our citiizens to be more prosperous and healthier. Let's support our hard working Americans

was_A_demmie   November 8th, 2009 9:42 am ET

oh your poor misguided souls. Just wait until the only option is the public option and it costs more than you can afford so you dont buy it. then you get fined by the gov't for NOT haveing your own insurance.

in a land, where if you wanted, you could be 100% "free" but not own a car, not own a house, not buy cable, have no phone, have no job, dont pay taxes, etc. now the gov't is going to MANDATE that you BUY insurance.... disgusting and very unconstitutional. the constitution does not give them the right to do this. ..

Pragmatic   November 8th, 2009 9:39 am ET

Health care reform has been an issue since Truman. The GOP had their chance to reform health care "their way" – they didn't even attempt it. Now they have good ideas? "Stay the course!" All the "red arm band" rhetoric is scare tactics and nothing more. As for division – its already here! GOP voting as they are told – no independent thought allowed!

jj   November 8th, 2009 9:39 am ET

I want healthcare reform but i certainly do not think a governement run option is the one and only answer with a trillion $ price tag. I certainly did not hear any other solutions being discussed. This was a very partisan bill and process and its freightenning to me how this will impact all of us. what is the rush on such an important issue?

Sarah   November 8th, 2009 9:37 am ET

"If the bill becomes law it will cause a severe division in this country"

There is already a division in this country, and the Right and Left who are fighting amongst each other are being played by the CORPORATIONS who are busy buying BOTH parties so they can rewrite laws to FAVOR PROFITS OVER SCRUPLES!! This bill takes power AWAY from the insurance companies and gives it back to THE PEOPLE! The public option is a threat held over their head-Either you stop gouging are wallets and then unfairly denying treatment, or you lose your customers. All I want is to pay a FAIR premium and have my coverage that i PAID FOR to be there if/when I need it. This bill will DO EXACTLY THAT!

Purple Spider   November 8th, 2009 9:37 am ET

Big Victory – yeah! To the favor of Congess so they can cut costs to have more money for their special interest groups! So where is the Senate going? Since they have no backbone, they will probably give in!
And who ever heard of the voice of the people being heard on this piece of junk Healthbill? So when do we lose this country? And when do we lose Freedom of Speech and when do we lose all of OUR RIGHTS ON ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING? BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!
WAKE UP AMERICA!

Mike FL   November 8th, 2009 9:36 am ET

I hope you all realize that even if the bill does pass, most of the benifits will not come into effect until 2013. And all of you who have private insurance be prepared for a large increase in cost....you know taking money from those who have it and give it to those who dont. I thought people were dieing now thats why we had to pass this so quick right? But they are going to let those people continue to die until 2013? The only thing that starts as soon as the bill passes is the taxes to pay for it. If the insurance companies have to pay more in taxes and cover more people that they usually wouldnt who do you think they are going to pass those costs on to? After a while private insurance will be to expensive and most will make a switch to the govt plan....the begining of the end....Im glad that the majority has to sacrifice money so that the 5% of legal residents who really cant afford it can have insurance.

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   November 8th, 2009 9:30 am ET

It is unconstitutional to force people to have health insurance. It's a freedom issue. Where in the world did anyone get the idea that the government has a Constitutional right to force supposedly free citizens to purchase anything?
Too many people – particularly CNN commentators/ with the lone exception of Lou Dobbs – are missing the point on this one. The ongoing babble about everyone agreeing that healthcare needs to be "reformed" should be rejected out of hand, because the Constitutional reality is that healthcare is none of the government's business.

Barbara -   November 8th, 2009 9:30 am ET

Congrats American friends (not comrades, as some of you uninformed would say)!from a Canadian. You have turned a corner, and will arrrive at a place in history where ALL Americans are covered by health care. It will not be the Canadian system (which we love), but will solve a lot of your health insurance problems. Well done. Prayers for you in the Senate!

Marty, Grand Rapids MI   November 8th, 2009 9:29 am ET

Not everything I would want in a bill considering I think we should be moving to single payer. But, a step in the right direction. I still don't think this will reduce cost but at least we will reduce the number of American's without healthcare. Also, I'm pro choice. I read Stupak's Amendment and it's totally reasonable. If it wasn't introduced, I think the bill would be 'pro abortion' (which pro choice is not) as it would encourage abortions.

Kim   November 8th, 2009 9:29 am ET

Many Democrats are putting their careers on the line, and they know it. The question is not whether they will be reelected.... but whether Americans will benefit. It shouldn't be politics as usual. Why are all the Republicans feeling so strongly? Only 1 GOP voted for the bill? ELECTION dude....

So why so many people are still complaining?

Anonymous   November 8th, 2009 9:26 am ET

Who cares about the GOP they dont care about the American people, it was time enough that this got passed the DEMs are doing what they have to do with are without them.

I just can't understand why people are so upset about this, America needs this there are people losing thier jobs, house and thier insurance and those Gop are worrying about those big profits those insurance companies are making.

molly   November 8th, 2009 9:25 am ET

Cries of socialism and Nazism are so pathetic. You all do realize we gave the Repubs years to do anything. We voted, and won. And now we have the legislation we voted for. Nothing could be a better example of representative democracy. Which is stated in the Constitution. Just ask Bohner.

It doesn't need to pass the Senate. The president is just giving the Republicans a shovel so they can dig themselves a deeper hole. When they refuse to do the wishes of 65% of the nation they will pay the political price and solidify their label as a party for corrupt Coroporate America, not the people.

So when it fails they will use the nuclear option.

If this bill becomes law it will result in higher taxes for you, an unfair burden on your employer which will require reduction in headcounts, across the board increases on medical insurance rates as the cost of high risk individuals is passed on to you....

This is taxation without representation.

A victory for the "little" guy. Once again, Dems show they are for the people and repubs show they are not.

I cannot believe all the selfish neo-cons complaining about helping to pay for those less fortunate. And yes this liberal has a job, despite how all you cons like to depict us all as being parasites on society waiting for our "handouts".

Too tight to spare 5% for those making 500k if single and 1 million for couples so others can have health insurance?. It will still be less than what was paid under your godhead Reagan. I only make 5 figures but I am willing to pay more to help my fellow citizens who have not been as blessed as I have.

As President Obama pointed out if you had been listening and not typing the name calling rants, you would know that we are paying now for all the uninsured but as he stated, it is the costliest care provided, ER. So, I might be good pay small amounts over time to keep folks from having to go to the ER as the last resort. With this bill now singles, not just single mothers with kids can now qualify for Medicaid. Perhaps this will stem the break up of marriages so the mother could qualify for Medicaid. After all, one layoff and you would need that safety net, and I know repubs think the word "empathy" is a four letter word, but in this case you might want to Google the definition.

Also, illegals should be allowed to purchase insurance on the public option with their own money, you will be just as sick or dead from a disease carried by an illegal and chances are more of them will be ill with no access to care. Save the rants about illegals should not be here, the reality is they are here, so deal with reality, not your version of reality where they are all herded up and sent back home.

To all you neo-con "chrisians" WWJD? Apparently, if you represent the "living example of Christ" He would let those less fortunate among us die, just as long as He can hang onto his gold coins.

What about "what you do unto the least of them you do unto me"?

What a terrible example you are setting for this "heathen" liberal.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this bill is the WRONG thing for America. The only good that will come from it is that there will be a major reversal in leadership in the House in November 2010. Unfortunately, if this bill is passed in the Senate and signed by the President, it is totally irreversible.... and we ....and our grandchildren .... are stuck with Obamacare forever. A very very sad day.

New Yorker   November 8th, 2009 9:06 am ET

If the bill becomes law it will cause a severe division in this country (where most citizens love their freedom) when the general public finds out what it actually means and how it will change their lives for the worse.

How long before we have to wear red arm bands?

C. Farrell, Houston, Tx   November 8th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Rep. Boehner needs to learn the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence before voicing his opinion about anything. He stood in front of tea party protesters, held up a copy of the Constitution telling the crowd about what their rights are but was quoting what's in the Declaration of Independence and nobody told him any different, they looked embarrassed and dropped their heads. If this is the best the GOP has to offer for a spokes persons, they need to send him back to the 5th grade.

Fantastic!
We now have a health care bill that will help the American people.
Was a long time coming, a hard battle fought, but finally succeeded.
Now on to the Senate.
They are more accessable than the reps so those of us who
support reform must continue to contact the politicians
until we get this completely passed.

phoenix86   November 8th, 2009 8:54 am ET

Dear Senators,

Please be more thoughtful about the long term consequences of the Pelosi bill before you decide to jump on board.

Pelosi may be "safe" in her little San Francisco district, Senators and the majority of congress are not safe from the voter in 2010.

I advise the Senate to be more deliberate than Mrs. Pelosi.

annie s   November 8th, 2009 8:52 am ET

Thank you Speaker Pelosi and all 220 brave legislators who voted for this bill. And to those who voted for corporate profits instead of the American people, I hope this is your last term in office.

GI Joe   November 8th, 2009 8:52 am ET

But but but but ........

The republicans have to protect the profits the Insurance companies are making now, so that they get big contributions.

Comrades !! The great socialistic upheaval in America is well on its way to degrading a once great and powerful country! My congratulations comrades! What Stalin and Mao could not do from without is being done from within by a weak and self centered populace!

Lois   November 8th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Finally! Finally! The Democrats had some GUTS to do what should have been done years ago..President Obama truly is the Leader for these times and we are Proud to have him represent us..The work is half done now on to the Senate and Harry Reid and hopefully he will have the courage to do whats right and get Health Care Reform passed.
Hats off to John Cao from Louisiana for taking one for the President and the people of his district..

demsrulz   November 8th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Congratz dems...! We love you!!!

Why does the media insist on reporting Palin's every movement? Even if she does run for president, she has no shot at winning at all. Time to move on.

ib   November 8th, 2009 8:48 am ET

Sad; another gov. take over of our lives. there should be a better way; vote them out in 2010 if we still have a country. This out of controll spending has got to stop one way or another. I hope we still have a choice in 2010 and are not like the failed banks; out of money and out of being a bank or country.

MARK   November 8th, 2009 8:47 am ET

It barely passed in the liberal House 220-215. Don't expect it to get through the Senate. SORRY OBAMA and PELOSI, but looks like the American people will actually win this one, not YOU!

Cynthia   November 8th, 2009 8:41 am ET

Congratulations from Canada!
Continue to fight for the welfare of your people not the pocketbooks of insurance companies.

diridi   November 8th, 2009 8:40 am ET
