Washington (CNN) – Two sources tell CNN that the idea for having former President Bill Clinton talk with Democratic senators about health care came from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. A senior administration official says Reid asked Clinton to do it, and the White House had a role in helping to arrange it.

On Capitol Hill, a senior Democratic leadership aide confirms to CNN that Reid invited the former president after discussing the idea with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who worked in the Clinton White House. The leadership aide says Clinton is expected to discuss "what's at stake - the historic moment" and to call on Democrats to "finish the job."

Former President Bill Clinton is a Democrat and we expect him to support our President and not a Republican. Republicans go dig up GWB/Cheney for your support and stop complaining.

Jayden,FL   November 10th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

Go get em' Mr President

smokey   November 10th, 2009 12:28 pm ET

I think this is a great idea.. Who better than Pres Clinton to speak to the Democratic party, and hopefully convince them to put aside their political ideology at this time important and historical time , and do what is right for the American People..Like they say " all hands on deck " !

JEAN - ATL   November 10th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

I'm for anything that might help these silly spineless senate dems to not blow this opportunity, as they usually end up doing. As a long-time voter, if they let the repubs cause them to blow this one, they will be blamed by their base, and they may all be voted out! I see where the repub rule has gotten us into the biggest mess that we have seen since the 30's, and with this current batch of uncivilized Greedy Old Party congress people, all we can look forward to is more intolerance and greed. This reform needs to be done now with a public option to stop the pharmaceutical and insurance companies from gouging us to death with high premiums and costs that we can barely keep up with now. Even with passage of the current proposed House bill, they have 3 more years to gouge us, and will make the sky the limit. I don't care what it costs they need to be stopped!

DAVE   November 10th, 2009 12:19 pm ET

maybe clinton can inform these democrats that the death panels exist.... they just classified it under a different name... it is a little provision in the bill classified as a community rating and for some odd reason his regime of media will not report on this little diddy..... maybe cnn should look into this and report the truth instead of telling just what pelozi and obama want hidden from the american people.....

John D.   November 10th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Both are as two-face as you get. Clinton made as much a disgace of the WH as Obama is trying to do.Reid is just a spineless waste.

WI Vet   November 10th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

This is one superpowered game of chess here

Chris D.   November 10th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Excellent!!!!! These DEMS in congress need a huge pep talk....they need to know what the majority of people in America want, and desire.

Willy Brown   November 10th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

One loser looking to hear from another loser speaking to the losers in 2010 and 2012. Nice.....

Dave   November 10th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

This is just a disaster then. That's what it will be.

julie in atlanta   November 10th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

If anybody can help the dems across the finish line, it's BC......GO BIG DOG GO!!!!

Dutch/Bad Newz, VA   November 10th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Basically Bill is gonna tell them, if you don't pass a bill, you won't get re-elected. Who better to explain that to these senators. While Mr. Clinton is at it, he shuld emphasize that the American people want a public option and that if they don't deliver on that, that's just as bad.

Olivia   November 10th, 2009 11:56 am ET

Democrats better stick together to get this healthcare reform bill passed, The ones who don't need to be called out next election!

Obama: bad for America   November 10th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Liberals are crooks. Everyone knows that the Pelosi bill is unsustainable. Why else would we pay for 5 years of healthcare over 10 years. Also, name another government agency that runs efficiently. Idiots.

Real reform should start small and focused on individual problems. Once a problem is fixed. Move to the next.

Obama's plan to create a whole new system, new agencies, new bureaucracies, new rules, LESS FREEDOM.... Obama is bad for the country. We need new leadership.

tidho   November 10th, 2009 11:52 am ET

Is Clinton going to hypnotize the Blue Dog's (i.e. sensible) Democrats into forgetting that the Federal Government doesn't have any money to spend?
I'd hope their principles wouldn't be swayed by Clinton's scare tactics. If they are they deserve to be elected out in 2010.

Tommygunn   November 10th, 2009 11:51 am ET

Smart Move!

Since the BIG TENT DEMOCRATs can't make up their UNIVERSAL minds they need a VOICE OF REASON to give them a better insight.

Here's how it goes, if the BILL PASSES the DEMOCRATs (LIBERALS, BLUEDOGS, MODERATE) will be preceived as RESULTS ORIENTED.

If the BILL DOES NOT PASS the DEMOCRATs (LIBERALs, BLUEDOGs, MODERATE) will be preceived as SCARDY CATs or COWARDS.

At the end of the day, RESULTS ORIENTED should be the label on either POLITICAL PARTY. Given those facts, the MAJORITY should win this one or they would be considered as COWARDS.

hmmmm.....

JP   November 10th, 2009 11:50 am ET

This bill as written has a provision that states will be paid off if they do not not pass any laws that affect the size of medical malpractice awards or limit attorney fees. This is the exact opposite of what reform is. Taxpayers will be asked to pay more and the trial lawyers will be better off than they would be if the house bill didn't pass. This is despicable. Can I as a taxpayer sue Pelosi for malpractice and gross negligence for her actions.

Fair is Fair   November 10th, 2009 11:47 am ET

They have to send in Clinton to get people out of North Korea. They have to send in Clinton to talk about healthcare. Can this administration do anything on their own?

The incompetence is staggering.

Ancient Texan   November 10th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Hey Harry and Bill, another trillion plus boondoggle that will raise the cost of healthcare insurance, still not cover everyone, (because some have no desire to be insured) cause taxes and fees to be raised, and in the end bankrupt the nation isn't what we the people need crammed down our throats at this time. Try LISTENING to the voters!

Dar   November 10th, 2009 11:44 am ET

Can't do it your self Reid, I thought you were the all powerful one in the house, or was that the nasty looking thing called the speaker of the house?

Fed Up   November 10th, 2009 11:40 am ET

You're sinking Reid and are getting really desperate. Why don't you just retire while you have some dignity left, instead of trying to destroy our health care?

Four and The Door   November 10th, 2009 11:35 am ET

...oh, but don't blow it by bringing up the cost.

terry,va   November 10th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Finish the job dumbocrats and you will be finished politically. I'm not sure that losing your job is just punishment, as you will ruin this country. But I guess we won't be allowed to hang you. That is too bad.

Bill   November 10th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Looks like Harry and Barack can't swing it by themselves so they're calling in the "big gun". This just about certifies their ineptitude. These people either can't handle success or have risen past their level of competence or both.

BLM   November 10th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Sounds a bit desperate...Reid is not much of a leader...

aproudmemberoftheunpatrioticmob   November 10th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Oh that is so wonderful, inviting a convicted perjerur to the Congress (which already has more unconvicted ones than it needs) to discuss how to steal more money from the American taxpayer. Obama, one and done.

Irma in North Carolina   November 10th, 2009 11:17 am ET

I hope that the former president Clinton can knock some sense into these blue dogs. . They should work for the people and not think of them selves. This was a very wise decesion of Reid.

Independent   November 10th, 2009 11:16 am ET

If the Senate Democrats can not come together and do what they 've been elected to do, then they should be voted out in 2010

Dominican mama 4 Obama   November 10th, 2009 11:15 am ET

Please 'finish the job'. This isn't about Obamacare, this is about millions upon millions of fellow citizens going bankrupt or facing that posibility because of a lack of healthcare, or just plain gouging and denying from their insurance companies. No one in Capitol Hill can in good conscience say that the people of this country do not deserve the same type of access to healthcare that they have as elected officials. No one! The lies, the scare tactics, and the stalling, from BOTH political parties, can all be traced back to the bottomless pockets of the insurance companies lobbyists, and the insatiable and evil greed of corrupt politicians intent on maintaining the status quo at the expense of their constituents' needs so that they can continue to live high on the hog.

victim of republican greed   November 10th, 2009 11:15 am ET

If health reform does not get done, 2010 may be tough on democrats, even though electing republicans is like hiring people who are as dynamic as mannequins in a department store window. Mannequins are smarter, though.

katiec   November 10th, 2009 11:14 am ET

It is crucial for our country that Health Care Reform pass, with a strong Public Option. We who support this must contact and continue to contact all senators, ussenators.com, and the white house, whitehouse.gov , demanding they support what the majority of the
American people want.
We can no longer allow or tolerate big business continue to run, control our country making critical decisions on our welfare.
We can no longer support or accept the politicians who put campaign funding, personal gains and big business over the welfare of us and our country.
Phone, e mail, write letters. We must take America back.

Irving M. Terzich   November 10th, 2009 11:14 am ET

Well, if former President Clinton accepts the invitation, that should seal the fate of the Public Auction Health Bill in its current configeration. Go for it Sir.

We love you Bill

We can count on you

You are the true leader

Lee in Oregon   November 10th, 2009 11:11 am ET

I say.......You go Bill.......whatever it takes to get these Democrats on board with reform. Forget the Republicans.

There's absolutely no reason why the Senate should keep dragging their feet on this. It's bad enough to contend with the party of no and who needs them anyway.

So Senate Democrats get your act together and do the right thing and do it now! The American people are waiting and their patience is running out!!

Terry from West Texas   November 10th, 2009 11:10 am ET

Of course the mere mention of Clinton's name will bring out the Conservative naysayers, who will make sneering double entendres and find a way to accuse Clinton of socialism, communism, and satanism.

Let me say that one Clinton is worth more than Nixon, Agnew (most of you don't even remember him), Reagan, Bush (the good one), Quayle (remember that famous Republican?), Bush (the other one), McCain, and Palin all added up. That disappointing lineup is the best Conservatism could come up with during our lifetimes. I omitted President Ford because he was a capable and decent man and he was never nominated by a Republican Convention.

The Democrats gave us Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton, and Obama, a much more impressive group of men. A very stark comparison.

mj   November 10th, 2009 11:09 am ET

Get 'er done, big Bill.
