From

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is considering four scenarios to move forward in Afghanistan, and was expected to discuss them at Wednesday's eighth meeting with his war council, sources told CNN.

The meeting in the White House Situation Room was to continue evaluating how best to carry out the mission in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, told CNN beforehand.

Petraeus provided no specifics on options under consideration, but said the process is approaching completion.

"I think we are indeed nearing a decision on this very important topic," he said.

Though the options under consideration are not being spelled out, one is fairly well-defined.

Why is it more important to get a 1 trillion dolllar healthcare plan through the House than to make a decision on Afghanistan?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It might not be "more" important but one could argue that it is "just" as important to see that ALL American citizens including our veterans and their families have access to affordable health care.

Meh   November 11th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Yes, by all means, let's rush into something, all you people complaining about the "dithering". It helped us so much in the past.

jim   November 11th, 2009 9:16 pm ET

pathetic republicans. still at their bitter games. they seem to just want to complain.

when will they try to be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

their idiocy disgusts me and all thinking people.

Obama Supporters   November 11th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

I laugh when I think off all the libs that thought Obama was going to end war. My response was always, "No he is not, he is going to shift the primary focus to Afghanistan." Well I guess we were both wrong: STILL AT WAR, BUT WITH ZERO FOCUS.

Eric   November 11th, 2009 9:05 pm ET

It would be an absolute mistake to send more troops. The president really needs to be bold and instead start to formulate a plan to get us out of there and let them take care of themselves. I hope he realizes this and makes the right decision in the best interests of America

NC   November 11th, 2009 8:47 pm ET

he needs to listen to the generals, they know best.

JES   November 11th, 2009 8:43 pm ET

When are you going to do something. Sitting on the sidelines is not what a President should do. How long and how many lives will it take before you make a stand.

Mike FL   November 11th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

Don try to tie this in with the troops, they go where they are told to go when they are told to go. As far as marines we want to be there (marine corps infantry) we want to fight no matter what kind of fight it is.....it not about us, its about the commander in cheifs inability to choose a plan and stick to it. We will fight anytime anywhere regardless of what our bielifs are sned us and we will take it, dont drag the troops in to this.

Wise Latina   November 11th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

You know, if former President Bush had actually given any thought to going to war – and not just turned it all over to a bunch of arrogant Chicken Hawks like Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz – we probably wouldn't have invaded Iraq in the first place or at least things might have gone better.

I hope for the sake of our country, our military and the people of Afghanistan, that whatever decision our President makes brings peace to that war-torn nation and brings our soldiers home.

fight the war with the cia.....not another 40,000 troops...the economy can not survive a war with that may have no end in sight....end both wars now...

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 11th, 2009 7:57 pm ET

Obama has been given the facts since the day after he became President-elect. If he can figure out what to do to stimulate the economy in a few weeks (the stimulus), why hasn't he decided on an Afghanistan strategy. He's had a full year. Pretender-in-Chief is a better title for Obama. He certainly lacks any concept of what command really means.

It's been said by our military and politicians that we need to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis and Afganis. With the President seemingly unable to make a decision that he has known for MORE than 3 months, it has occurred to me that we first need to win Obama's heart and mind in regards to the these wars!

As a Libertarian I would like to know from the Democrat Liberals 3 questions.

1. When will the Obama administration be responsible for their actions and quit blaming the Bush administration?

2. If the Healthcare, that they want for Americans, is so good why are the Government people (Senate, Congress, House of Representatives, and the President and Vice President) exempt from it.

3. For all of the voters for Obama – Aren't you glad that you voted in a person from Chicago that likes that style of Government that thinks bigger is better? Does the name Daily ring a bell?

The gig is up!

Puppet Afghanistan President Karzi wouldn't last a single week in Afghanistan after the American troops pull out, American Taxpayers will likely pay for his lavish exile in some exotic location for the rest of his life.

How many brave American men and women have died and been horribly wounded so that CIA could flood Russia with cheap Heroin?

Jeff   November 11th, 2009 6:42 pm ET

Regardless of opinion as to whether or not we should have gone in, we are in now. As such, we must finish what we have started. If more troops are required to accomplish that quicker with less loss of life, so be it.

Of course, we want a thought through decision, but we can't be deciding forever. The generals know how this stuff works, and have experience in it. Their opinions and reccommendations deserve great weight.

Extensive delaying in making a decision is a side effect of inexperience (although intentions may be righteous). Likewise, percieved experience leads to decisions made too quickly, without enough thinking through of the situation. What we do need is someone with real experience making relavent decisions. This is one of the reasons why I would prefer that presidents have military experience, the higher the rank the better, as they have held lower ranks as well. People who send troops into battle should have a real good feel for just what it is that they are doing. Not an attack on the current administration so much as the lawyer breed of politicians in general.

joe m   November 11th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

i don't know what to say. careful consideration is one thing, but to stall on such a decision for over 2 months? this hesitance is engendering an increasing loss of confidence in the president's ability to govern.

ICARE   November 11th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

Look, the only place on earth that we need to send troops into and gut teerorists out are, the regions of Pakistan. If we do that, we dont have to deal with Afghanistatn..

Let Afghan fight for themselves.

Sniffit   November 11th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

"when President Obama will show some leadership and make the tough decisions without waiting for the political polls to provide the answer."

The polls are already providing a pretty clear answer. The majority wants us out of Afghanistan. That's not really in debate, so if what you said was actually true, he'd have told McChrystal to go stuff his letter where the sun don't shine within a week or so of receiving it. Tough decisions aren't made on the advice of just one person...nor are they made quickly when you're trying to decide whether to leave 60,000 some odd troops in a dangerous foreign country in the first place or to add another 40,000 to the mess. Leadership is not letting your Generals run the show by dancing you around like an uncritical puppet...it's telling them you appreciate their input and making sure you get input from many other sources so you can make the best decision regarding the lives of those men and women, our goals in that mission and the strategies for reaching them.

Jenn, Philadelphia   November 11th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

What's with 4 options? There are 2. All out, or give the generals what they asked. It isn't going to be option one, so option two is all that's left. After announcing a new mission in March and appointing General McChrystal to implement it, this indicision just makes him look weak.

ICARE   November 11th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

Four options!! Holy cow!! Does he also have four brains and four eyes? If not, he better just take the BEST option. We dont have time for him to play around.

Gerry   November 11th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

When you have no idea what you are doing you can't make a decision, and he doesn't know what to do. I think he should replace his three top General's with General's Pelosi, Reid & Biden.

sniffit   November 11th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

1. Surrender. 2.Do nothing. 3. Blame Bush. 4. Give a speech.

Jack Staten   November 11th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

Obama has said for 6 years we should be in afghanistan and not iraq. He even ran on it.So how much longer will it take for him to decide. He should have been ready from day one right? And were are the cry babies demanding an actual date of departure. Wow, funny how one year can make a difference. Please dont say health care is taking up all the time, when its less than 17% of our population who really does'nt have it.

Option 1: Go to more Dem fundraisers

Option 2: Go make a flowery speech at a photo op

Option 3: Fly overseas to a) attend more photo ops and
b) apologize to everyone in attendance

Option 4: Stay home and redistribute other people's wealth to those who didn't care to work hard in school or at their job, or their marriage, or around their house, or their neighborhood

Spin this however you choose!
The problem with taking your time now is that the troops are already there and the military Commanders on the ground are asking for more help because they are getting their butts kicked. Now is not the time to debate. Send the troops or bring them all home.

"Progressive liberalism is clearly the democrat's worst enemy.."

Actually, no. Look at history just a littel and you'll realize the biggest problem the Dems have always had is resting on their laurels. The people who really need to wake up out there are the ones who supported Obama and the Dems last November, who have sinec disappeared and gone back to couch potato mode because they think their role in this country's progress and future was over as of November 5, 2008.

And in 10 months has narrowed it down to only 4 options.

Wow! How impressive and intelligent is that? NOT!!!!

What a joke and embarrassment he is.

File under "Sarcasm"   November 11th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

All you flaming liberals whose only answer is the blame it on Bush should stop spouting the same stupidity and ask yourself when President Obama will show some leadership and make the tough decisions without waiting for the political polls to provide the answer.

Tom in Illinois   November 11th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

Obama was given a detailed report of the situation when he took over in January. Ten months later we are still waiting for a decision but he has time to take his wife on a date night in New York or go to political fundraisers. The only priority in the White House is getting relected.

wrongchange   November 11th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

Marie Laveaux   November 11th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

How cute that the right has learned a new word for their " insult the President list."..dithering. I'l wager most of the haters didn't even know such a word existed until recently, and still don't know what it means. If I were a soldier, like my father, I would want my commander in chief to make the most thoughtful decision possible regarding my life and that of my fellow soldiers, not one based on false bravado. The words "Bring them on", uttered by Bush to the enemy, still rings in my ears.
I pray that the decision made by the President is based on knowledge and compassion, not testosterone.

He is such a loser, I cant beleive we voted in a community organizer

James Michael Roberson   November 11th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Obama continues to make me proud that I voted for him. And if he continues to govern in the next three years as he has in his first year in office he may prove to be a better president than Bill Clinton making Obama the best president since Thomas Jefferson.

I only wish someone put as much thought and analysis before sending me to Viet-nam 40 years ago. My suggestion is that those who want to send more troops quit your complaining and join the military and volunteer to go. I am sure yoru wishes will be honored. Until you are willing to put up, I suggest you shut up.

moder rate   November 11th, 2009 5:14 pm ET

As a veteran, I am not pleased with the suggestion that we "dithered" in Iraq. I'm glad you have freedom to express yourself though. I'm truly amazed at how people re-write history to suit there agendas. That said, I am also anxiously awaiting a decision, and am disturbed by the time it's taking. The job is not done, the alternative to finishing what we started is not acceptable because it means that our enemies, and we do have enemies, will have a place to regroup and plot their next attack. President Obama, earn your Peace Prize through the strength of some of the best Americans available, the dedicated members of the U.S. Armed Forces. If given the support needed, they will make the world a safer place for everyone.

bess   November 11th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

so it's taken him 12 weeks (since HIS commander asked for troops) to come up with 4 options. In 3 more weeks will Obama come up with a 5th option? hate to admit it but "dithering" is becoming more and more the perfect word to define and prove his contempt for the military.

kr   November 11th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

The people who are complaining must be warmongers; the same group that was all for it for Iraq. Russia had to pull out of this war with the loss of 13K soldiers and l million Afghanistan. I think that is had to be a very tough decision for the President so let him do his job. I do not care what this President does all I read and hear is heinous remark against him.

WrongKindofChange   November 11th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

Obama, hoping if he stalls a decision long enough he may not need to make one and that the war will come to an end on its own.

This is what we can call one of Obama's 3AM moments....which stretches into 3AM the next day, 3AM the next week, and 3AM the next month.

I guess all his time as a community organizer and all his "present" voting in the senate hasn't prepared him for the realities of the world. But he sure can talk a good game...well as long as the telaprompter is running.

Enough   November 11th, 2009 4:48 pm ET
