Obama orders review of intelligence relating to Fort Hood.

Washington (CNN) – President Obama has directed a review of all intelligence in the federal government's files relating to last week's shootings at Fort Hood, especially any intelligence relating to the alleged shooter Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, according to the presidential memorandum released by the White House Thursday.

Obama has also directed that an immediate review be done of how "any such intelligence was handled, shared, and acted upon within individual departments and agencies and what intelligence was shared with others," the presidential memorandum said.

In the memorandum, Obama also directs that the preliminary results of the review be provided by November 30.

The memo is addressed to the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Director of the FBI. Obama asked for the inventory and review on November 6, the day after the Fort Hood shootings, but the president's memo was not released by the White House until Thursday.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been charged with 13 preliminary counts of premeditated murder stemming from last week's shooting at Fort Hood Army Post, an Army investigator said Thursday.

So we're not jumping to any conclusions and refusing to label this as terrorism.

I also find it interesting how quickly the murder of George Tiller, the abortion doctor, was labled by the left as terrorism yet they refuse to call this terrorism. What more do you need? Did you see his presentation? If not, I highly recommend that you take a look at it. It's absolutley frightening...

DJ   November 12th, 2009 5:31 pm ET

The guy was a major in OUR Army...no need to hype it up to score political points

Obama is right, no need to start getting people scared by calling a code orange or code yellow...but yeah someone in the Army should have realized Husan was a fraud. That part needs to be investigated.

gerryluimes   November 12th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

How many terrorist sleeper cells might there be in the United tates that thus far have not yet been discovered? Remember this is a large country containing a complex society.I greatly admire the commitment and the efforts of the intelligence services for what they have ,and can accomplish.Needless to mention that it must be considered theorethically impossible to be one necessary step ahead ALL the time. After 9/11 the country has fared exceptionally well one would think! As far as Major Hasan is concerned, his tial may well prove him guilty of terrorism. Many will yell for a quick death sentence.
It could be argued that this response in itself also constitutes an act of terror....You tell me what the right strategy should be !.........

When the military officers fail to police there own, lives can be lost security does not stop once a person is hired. If government employee have to be reinvestigate.. Effective immediately by order of a non excutive order.. All military officers and enlisted personnel shall randomly selected for a thorough backgound investigation. Inaddition every officer selected for o4 and above and Enlisted being selected for E-8 and E-9...

This acted to being implimented to maintain good order and discipline.

mjm   November 12th, 2009 5:26 pm ET

This guy was going to Iraq, not Afghanistan.

Regardless of theater, psych docs DO NOT see combat. He was never going to engage his fellow Muslims in combat. He didn't have PDSD, he wasn't stressed out....he was a terrorist.

Obama needs to understand that we are still at war no matter what the polls tell him about Afghanistan.

SEND THE TROOPS.

Defining insanity   November 12th, 2009 5:24 pm ET

These are all poisoned fruits from a poisoned tree.

Soldiers turning inward because logically the war is illegal and thus immoral.

Hassan (if found guilty) should be punished to the full extent of the law.

So should G. Bush and D. Cheney.

Whisper it on the whirlwind, whisper it on the whirlwind.....bring them all to trial......Peace begins with justice. Justice is the American Way, not Hubris.

GuyInVA   November 12th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

The intelligence agencies should exercise the thoughtful contemplation for which the president is so famous, and answer him when – or if – they feel like it.

TOMMYGUNN   November 12th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

I agree somebody got some explaining to do. NO FINGER POINTING!

It is easy to do a Monday morning quarterback routine when you are a sports fan. But when the owner calls you in on Monday morning he does not want to hear of any excuses. It's time for all the coaches to give their sides and how this will NEVER OCCUR AGAIN!!!!

Now the AMERICAN public expects whatever happened to be spoken to openly with IMMEDIATE CORRECTIONS.

Marie Laveaux   November 12th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

I think a very thorough background check of every federal employee, including the military recruits is necessary, for a number of reasons. Targeting only Muslims makes the assumption that all Muslims are extremists, which is false. Those of you on here who are preaching hate against Muslims and are stereotyping them are only making the situation worse. Its not a matter of political correctness, it's about fairness and equality. That's what America's supposed to allow. I wonder how many of you would consider those who have killed people who work at abortion clinics or bombed those clinics terrorists or extremists?

Kat   November 12th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Too funny!! Now he thinks he can get an accurate review, after his entire administration can't even speak the word terrorism!!! Polital correctness is going to be the fall of our great nation. This guy is a complete idiot. Can't wait for 2012.

Doug   November 12th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

As a democrat who voted Obama in office, he has already fouled this one up. Remember, his administration reduced terrorism to the following term, "man made disaster". President Obama at Ft. Hood said, it was not terrorism. The major was not charged with terrorism but murder. This report has no effect on terrorism because the administration does not use this as a national policy.

Antonio_elizabeth-NJ   November 12th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

I dont believe the man that shot 38 people at Fort Hood is solely responsible for those tragic events. When things of this nature occur ,conspiracy looms in the minds of our people. A distrust that has grown within most americans stemming from unrighteous acts by our goverment. That distrust or closure will only begin to dwindle when righteousness in our government prevails.

kevincollins   November 12th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

What's needed is a federal investigator to lead the probe. The last thing we need is the Army investigating itself, especially in light of the unconscionable cover-up they did with the death of Pat Tillman.

Bill   November 12th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

Rather than political correctness, I suggest the real problem is that, because the Army has so few psychiatrists to deal with PTSD and other problems of soldiers (and particularly Muslims) when returning from combat, they were reluctant to get rid of him unless they were convinced it was absolutely necessary.

Obama Stormtrooper   November 12th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

By the way, all of Blackwater (now Xe) are terrorists as well. They should be de-funded and locked up for war crimes.

Joe   November 12th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

But yes, when Napolitano said that some service members may be a lone wolf, she also might known something that we didn't know about Major Hasan. I am not taking Napolitano off the hook. I just hope next time that if some agencies know something about a certain individuals to do something about it, rather than wait until something drastic happens.

Kevin B.   November 12th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

I am a staunch democrat, and I am for the whole profiling thing when it comes to preventing attacks on america, including tis one. This wasn't a case of political correctness run amok, it was outright imcompetance by the agencies tasked with keeping americans safe.

Dem-no-moralizer   November 12th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

I voted for Obama believing the lies, transparency, rid our government of corruption, for the people.... right! It has become readily apparent that he is clueless and that his Administration is a bag of leftist cats that can't tie their collective shoe. I have surrendered my Democratic status and registered as an Independent, the DNC no longer represents my beliefs or my ideological views. They have moved to the line of Socialism, Marxism, Fascism or whatever you want to call it, it is UN-AMERICAN! I have seen the unbelievable exhibition of racism, lack of leadership, corruption, nepotism and down right failure so far to address our Nation's most important issues.... What is next Mr. President, you're too busy to attend the most important gathering in Europe to celebrate the end of the Berlin Wall but you're not too busy to jet off to Asia or Copenhagen for an Olympic plug? I believe I made a horrible mistake, God please help us and America please forgive me...

DawnL,CA   November 12th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

It all comes down to political correctness. Heaven forbid we should offend anyone by calling a spade a spade. This killer should have been tried for treason for his contact with Almaki(sp?), a known terrorist. Why are we so afraid of telling it like it is? I'm tired of a lot of you saying all muslims are not terrorists.True. But, they have certainly kept their mouths shut over the last 8 years about any terrorist acts. Why have only a few stood up & denounced terror acts & then only when they are afraid their mosques might be bombed. It's time for the American muslims to either stand up for America...loud & clear.. or show their true colors.

VON BISMARK -Vienna   November 12th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

Let Cheney waterboard him. It will stop further attacks!

gary   November 12th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

political correctness- one of academia's blunders that will help bring down our country. celebrate diversity- tearing a united society apart by forcing those opposed to our way of life into our mainstream. Those who support these perverted philosophies have the blood of thirteen innocent people on your hands.

The Lonely Libertarian of Liverpool NY   November 12th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Come on folks, this was not a terrorist act, but just another whack a do with a gun. Psychos are everywhere, and everyone is a Monday night quarter back after the fact.
The crime is a tragedy, and everyone would like to prevent this but you can not read the minds of these people. Sometimes you just can not question the will of a higher power. This is a reminder that you should be living everyday as if it was your last.
Do right
Do your best
and treat others as you would want to be treated.
Prayers for all involved, and praise to those heroes who stopped him.

single mom   November 12th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

First step – review files of Muslims in the military who have had complaints/comments or reviews similar to Nasad's.
Yeah, I know that isn't PC. Look where that got us.

This guy was a traitor and a terrorist. Pure and simple.
I'll be surprised if CNN puts this up!

George   November 12th, 2009 3:57 pm ET

Good idea. Whatever is learned, please Mr. President do not share it with PETE HOEKSTRA. Also keep it from Rick Santorum. Remember he and his buddy Pete found the weapons of mass destruction.
Only share the secured information with ones you can trust. I know its hard to find many in Washington you can trust,

Justice   November 12th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Good move, Mr. President.

Please keep the intelligence away from Rep. Pete Hoekstra, as he proved untrustworthy earlier this week when he leaked intelligence from his committee.

SocialismBad   November 12th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

13 people dead and 30 wounded... all in the name of political correctness and "diversity". How many times is this going to happen before people finally get a clue that we are at WAR with Islamic radicals. It's not like they are trying to hide their allegiance! This guy7 wore it on his sleeve but people failed to act. Let's get real people or more and more will die needlessly.

aproudmemberoftheunpatrioticmob   November 12th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

He is one MORE bureaucrat – ordering reviews and more reviews and Czars and Project Managers and stuff – all silly google mentality!!!

victim of republican greed   November 12th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

It is not fair to the wingnuts to use words like intelligence. Their gut feelings are all that matter. They have already condemned any one that has a muslim name, like Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Steve in Denver   November 12th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

WOA! Aren't you moving too fast, Mr. President? The last administration fought any investigation into anything about the intelligence failures that led up to 9/11. No sense trying to learn what went wrong so we can prevent it in the future.

I know. Lets go invade Paraguay!

So glad we went with the smart guy this time!

Idiot_Pelosi   November 12th, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Hmmm, OBUMMER doesn't have his intelligence group in order.

It's OBUMMER's fault............

Shana   November 12th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

I am absolutely opposed to profiling and discrimination. This guy was throwing up red flags all over the place. Political correctness and the irrational fear of offending people allowed him to continue to descend into insanity and homicidal tendencies. Most Muslims are law abiding, peaceful people; this one was not. His deplorable actions were not a function of his religion but products of a deranged mind and warped zealotry.

Paul Ernest Show   November 12th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

As a veteran, I must say that the army failed those soldiers. Considering the era of terrorism we now live in, the army and every establishment that has large number of people assembling or working in them should have armed security, plain or uniformed clothing, ready to protect it from such sudden mayhem. We should stop being naive about our security and be more proactive. Instead of waiting for the usual police officers to arrive, armed security should be always present in schools, colleges, day cares, etc

A. Smith   November 12th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Huh, intelligence report?

One of the approximately 2 million Muslims residing in America decides to be faithful and obligated to his Muslim Religion wherein the Koran tells him to do what he did to his fellow soldiers.

Apparently it takes a think group to determine if this could ever happen again!

Where was Lt.Gen. Robert Cone when a medical officer on his own staff was obviously complaining to anyone that listened and explaining that he was unfit for duty in the Afghanistan battle zone?

Was The Fort Hood base commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, MIA?
Or simply missing thru gross negligence of duty.

Steph   November 12th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

Look at that...a president who wants to get to the bottom of the issue and make changes to ensure this doesn't happen again, unlike what pres. bush did with the 9/11 commission. That is change we can believe in. Thank you President Obama for showing true leadership.

Party Purity will never bring Political Power!   November 12th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Yes, and when Napolitano reported that some service members may be a lone wolf, the cons vilified her for "insulting" service members.

Maybe if that had been taken more seriously, 13 of our brave American soldiers would still be alive today.
