(CNN) – Sarah Palin and her almost-son-in-law Levi Johnston have been in a war of words for months, but the former Alaska governor told Oprah Winfrey in just-released clips of the highly-anticipated interview that he is still "part of the family."
While not directly saying whether or not Johnston is invited to Thanksgiving dinner, Palin said her family still has affection for Johnston.
"It's lovely to think that he would ever even consider such a thing," Palin told Winfrey. "Because of course you want - he is a part of the family and you want to bring him in the fold and kind of under your wing. And he needs that, too."
Discussing her new book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," on Winfrey's famous couch, Palin said she and her family want to make peace with Johnston and move past the dramatics that have unfolded in the media over the last year. Johnston was once engaged to Palin's daughter, Bristol, and is the father of Palin's grandson, Tripp.
"I think he needs to know that he is loved and he has the most beautiful child, and this can all work out for good," Palin said. "It really can. We don't have to keep going down this road of controversy and drama all the time. We're not really into the drama. We don't really like that. We're more productive."
Palin also called her interview with Katie Couric during the campaign a "bad interview," but said the campaign staff encouraged her to continue to do others after that.
"The campaign said, 'Right on. Good. You're showing your independence. This is what America needs to see and it was a good interview,'" Palin said. "And of course I'm thinking, if you thought that was a good interview, I don't know what a bad interview is because I knew it was a bad interview."
Palin's full sit-down with Winfrey will air on Monday, the day before her memoir hits bookstores.

Oh please Levi let someone mic you up and record what she really says to you face to face so we will have even more proof of what a liar this woman is.
"We're not really into the drama. We don't really like that." Give me a break. More of her lies. She is all about drama, money and self. Just once, some honesty please. Service to America, not so much.
There she is, Miss America 2012 in all her glory. Now the only thing she has yet to do is promote her own sex tape. Look at what it's done for the likes of Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and her protoge Carrie Prejean. She'd get her own reality show and could leave the troubles of government behind.
Betcha she'd love to rip Levi into pieces. On Oprah's couch however, she pretends to be a loving wants-no-harm hockey mom, to drive up sales of her book.
Why am I reminded of a Trojan horse?
How did she got to be the governor of Alaska? she do not sound educated and intelligent to me but anyway this is America, the land of opportunity.
Palin lives for the drama.
Without the drama she is nothing.
And the drama is what brings in the $$$.
If you do not want drama, Sarah, go back to Alaska and quietly raise your kids.
We will not come looking for you.

Oprah and Palin separately are bad enough, I can't imagine watching the 2 of them together for an hour. Pure torture!
Why is this woman still newsworthy ?
Funny how Palin is now calling the Katie Couric interview simply "a bad interview" when during her campaign she accused Couric (and the rest of the media) of treating her badly. Maybe she needs to hire someone who can help her keep her stories straight.

This woman went to Oprah's interview very well prepared to NOT tell the truth, but what would make her look good. The looking good is only in her own mind and the mind of her trainers.
She fools no one but those who blindly cling to her every word and they are getting fewer as time goes on.
It is still obvious she has not taken any English courses to improve her grammar.
Why does Sarah Palin threaten you so much that you have to make such comments? Are you that dependent that the thought of being independent and standing on your own two feet (without the aid of government) brings out such insecurities? Maybe it's time to grow up! Pay your own way. Stop being a leech off of taxpayers. What does freedom mean to you?
How can anyone believe anything that comes out of this woman's mouth!
And some people would vote for her for President. What a sorry mess that would be.
That may have been the first intelligent series of sentences I have ever heard Sarah Palin speak. While I still believe my dog Bootsy would make a better President than she would. I will give her credit for trying to do the right thing in this situation.

I'm not a fan of Sarah Palin at all, but I give her much credit for holding her head high about this Levi character. He really just needs to do what's best for his son, and it's great that Palin takes the high road even if Johnston doesn't.
Well of course he's considered a member of the family – he's made a "dash for the cash" almost as fast as Sarah. All is forgiven if he's bringing in the bucks. Depending on how much money Playgirl pay him, Ma & Pa Palin might just try to get their daughter to marry him after all.
The Palin's live for drama. I don't understand why she is still around. I can't believe I voted for this woman!! Her and her family have become a complete embarassment.
Palin is fantastic she is a smart women who never got in to politic's realy but she know's beter then obama what america should be like , and we american people realy need and want !
Why don't she get a life and leave that young Man alone and let him see his son when he can.
