Pelosi weighs in on Mass. senate battle.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is weighing in on the battle to succeed the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Pelosi is heading to Boston Friday to formally endorse Rep. Mike Capuano in his bid for the Senate.

Capuano, a six-term Democrat who represents the state's 8th Congressional District, is battling Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley, Boston Celts co-owner Steve Pagliuca and Boston businessman Alan Khazei for the Democratic nomination.

"Whether taking on the CEOs of the financial services industry, supporting marriage equality, or voting against the Iraq War because he didn't believe Bush Administration made the case to take military action, Mike Capuano has a proven record of standing up for progressive values and what he believes is right. I am proud to endorse Mike Capuano for U.S. Senate," said Pelosi in a statement.

Capuano is considered a trusted adviser to Pelosi. In late 2006, then Speaker-elect Pelosi tapped Capuano to oversee the Democrats' transition to the majority. The speaker later picked Capuano to head her Special Task Force on Ethics Enforcement.

A new Suffolk University/WHDH survey released Thursday morning suggests that Coakley holds a clear lead in the Democratic race. According to the poll, 44 percent of likely Democratic primary voters back Coakley, with 17 percent supporting Pagliuca, 16 percent supporting Capuano and 3 percent saying they'd vote for Khazei.

The primary is scheduled for December 8 and the general election on January 19th. State Sen. Scott Brown is the only Republican in the contest.

Kennedy died in August. Long time Kennedy adviser and friend Paul Kirk is serving as an interim replacement in the Senate.

Why would you   November 12th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Wow, what an idiot to have Pelosi endorse you. He's not looking to win obviously.

Bren   November 12th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

The majority of Massachusetts citizens are fools.

They keep electing the Democrats--and they keep having the same problems. They just can't seem to figure that out.

They do not call it "Taxachusetts" for nothing.

Bob in Pa   November 12th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

So how do we get to stop weighing in on our wallets ?

Karen   November 12th, 2009 9:35 pm ET

Pelosi – YIKES!!!!!!!!!!! She scares me as much as Sarah Palin does!

Bren   November 12th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Massachusetts---a state being ran/destroyed by the Democrats-–is going to suffer the same fate as California--the entire state destroyed by illegals and liberal policies.

Keith in Austin   November 12th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

B0RING! Whoever Fancy Nancy endorses, will lose. Pelosi is a cancer on those she affiliates with and our Nation overall.

Old Farmboy   November 12th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Not really sure an endorsement from Pelosi is something that I would want.

MARK   November 12th, 2009 8:53 pm ET

THis woman needs to keep her mouth shut. She is ruining it for al democrats.

mjm   November 12th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

Progressive values? Who cares? This is a center right country.

The only reason they say "progressive" is because they are ashamed to call themselves LIBERAL.

By progressive, do you mean 3-7 trillion in the first 10 months with 1-2 trillion in health care on the way plus whatever cap-n-trade costs?

No thank you.

Man....does she look crazy or what?

missing lou already   November 12th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Can't stand to see another woman in power, can ya Nancy?

Mark   November 12th, 2009 7:36 pm ET

She will drag down anyone she endorses.

Watchdog   November 12th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

Comrade Pelosi's endorsement....please list all her endorsements so people will know who not to vote for...

Oh.....Anita Dunn resigned...this news appears not to have reached CNN...judging by your lack of coverage

Captain Mainstay   November 12th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

Sorry, Nancy, but your loyal servant is going nowhere.

Four and The Door   November 12th, 2009 7:18 pm ET

Mike Capuano has a proven record of standing up for progressive values and what he believes is right.

She must have meant left. This guy sounds like a real piece of work.

Gerry   November 12th, 2009 7:11 pm ET

If Pelosi is supporting Mike Capuano then this is a good reason to vote against him.

Idiot_Pelosi   November 12th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

Like the people of MASS really give 2 cents about what MRS. BOTOX has to say. The most despised politician in US history really thinks that people care about her opinions?

What a moron.

Ndubueze Chuku   November 12th, 2009 6:45 pm ET

Let the best candidate win. By 'best', I mean someone who can defeat the Republican candidate and also be able to hold on to the seat in subsequent elections. Let's not pull a Scozzafava here. I know it's not actually the same but let's not self-destruct. Let the losers back the winner after the primaries. Long live the DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

Scott, Tucson   November 12th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

I do believe Pelosi ought to worry more about keeping her seat come 2010. Remember folks...she and the Dems have had total control of Congress since 2006, it's they who have sign monetary budgets that are bankrupting this nation, created the housing collapse by changing the regulations granting loans to people who can't afford the payments which than help led to the financial woes we're seeing today.

No More Incumbents   November 12th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

Now there's an endorsement that could kill a candidacy.

Fox News Rools   November 12th, 2009 6:43 pm ET

Well, all I can say is; whoever Pelosi endorses may as well throw in the towel now.

Betty in Texas   November 12th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

I gotta tell ya, even though I'm basically a Democrat, I really wish Nancy Pelosi was not such a dominant figure for the party in Washington. She is devisive and often arrogant... and we just really don't need that.

Kevin in Ohio   November 12th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

You would think that any endorsement by this woman would be the kiss of death. Nancy Pelosi is a symbol of everything that is wrong and has gone wrong in this country.

tarheel   November 12th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

He shouldn't need Pelosi's help in a liberal Democrat state like Mass. My goodness, I'm not sure just what ANY Democrat could do wrong and not get elected in that state.

JES   November 12th, 2009 6:10 pm ET

With your endorsment he will be sure to lose like I hope you do in 2010.

Thank's for doing nothing and overspending our tax dollars.

Do you balance you checkbook the same way you do the budget.

enough   November 12th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

If Nancy Botoxi opens up her empty trap, the guy will lose for sure. Botoxi is so out of touch with reality it isn't funny. She needs to understand the rest of the United States is NOT like the loons in San Francisco.

Love that picture of her............she even looks like the nut job she is.

ib   November 12th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

If Peloski is for him that is the best reason in the world to vote against him.

single mom   November 12th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

Wait a second. Did I read that correctly? Pelosi has a Special Task Force on ETHICS ENFORCEMENT?
Excuse me while I try to stop laughing...
Nope, can't stop.

jsmith   November 12th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

This woman Pelosi is absolutly out of her mind. Do you mean there is a state in this union that would fall for her crazy speech, and who would want her to endorse them....Please....

Carlos   November 12th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

Heading her special task force on ethics should have been a full time job, thats like the fox guarding the hen house.

karen   November 12th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Why would anyone want an endorsement from Pelosi. She is poison for any canidate.
