(CNN) – President Barack Obama, on his first Asia trip since taking office in January, arrived Saturday in Singapore to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.

In addition to the meetings with the APEC heads of state, Obama plans to hold three bilateral meetings - with the leaders of Russia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Earlier, he told a packed house at Tokyo's Suntory Hall that all Americans should know that what happens in Asia "has a direct effect on our lives at home."

The president leaves Sunday for Shanghai, China.

That's a true statements. If China stops bankrolling these wars, buying our treasury notes there will be an adverse effect to the lives of every American especially the people in wall st.

Absolutely disgusting, the other world leaders slap this naive uninformed apoligist around like a third grade school child. Without his teleprompter he uuuum aaaaah uuum sounds like a total idiot. Maybe the MSM should check into who did this "intelligent" President's work assignments, in order to get his affirmative action grade curve in college to even graduate, another affirmative action Magna Cum Laude joke, in college.

Shelly   November 14th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

When you visit some else's home (country) you bow or shake hands whatever is the custom for that home or country. Just manners, folks. Too bad the pie holes posting above have none. I just love the couoch potatoes who have NEVER done much of anything in their sorry lives complain about the President AS IF they have any clue what he does on a daily basis, I 'm sure he accomplishes more in a day than you do in a month!!! YOU people are the problem, why not just go stay with the village idot in Texas and be happy!

Barbara - a Canadian Perspective   November 14th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Oh for gd's sake... President Obama is following protocol.... you know, showing RESPECT for the country and its heads, according to traditions..... something some in Congress, and on the posts could take note of in speaking to, or about, their own leader. You guys make me sick..... always looking and stretching to say something negative about your President!

Mlhall   November 14th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

Scott, Tucson, If you know so much about being a President why don't you run in 2012 and save the world.

Uh ... uh... uh...Obama   November 14th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Here I go ... up, up and away ... I just love flying all over! Any decisions I need to make I can do tomorrow ... or the day after ... or the day after that. I just love flying in MY plane.

We better all pray President Obama keeps our Asian Bankers from calling in all the US paper notes they are holding. Think before you speak because there is more involved than most of us can't wrap our small brain around. You need to pay attention to people like Warren Buffet who know and understand the necessity of what our President is doing.

KarolAnn   November 14th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

President Obama has an understanding of other cultures; what a unique gift after eight years of bumbling international diplomacy.
It's called manners.

jim   November 14th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

pathetic republicans still whining away with nothing but name calling.

when will they just try to be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem.

FloridaPatriot   November 14th, 2009 2:15 pm ET

Where are the jobs? They were outsourced to China years ago by the corporations who like non-union low paying labor overseas without any interference in their business practices. These corporations can make cheaper in Asian countries just check your latest purchase and read the label. Always remember this rule, if the corporation can get the same amount of productivity with less people why do they need you. We need to start exporting more than importing tell that to your congressman or senator at least the President is trying a new approach while everyone is still stuck in the old model of doing things what used to work is obsolete like most of the jobs that people used to have.

slick rick   November 14th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

This is not any apology tours and never was Scott. Don't get it twisted like your brain is. You and other conservatives. Obama is looking out for the best interest of our country. People like you are nuts

charlie in Maine   November 14th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

Come on ,

Let the hate roll. He didn't bow far enough to one or bowed too far to others, I swear if my President were to "walk on water" some of you right wingers would develop a new concern for water pollution and demand he file an impact statement on the effects of his feet in the water.

Here's an idea: Why don't you try what I did with George W. Watch the news and when he does something really bad complain then. Otherwise if you complain about nothing no one will believe you when he screws up. ( he is human so I am sure he will) Or maybe you have resigned yourselves to the fact that he is a good President and you are sick of waiting for him to really mess up. On that level I can't relate.. George W always came through for me.

Marie Laveaux   November 14th, 2009 1:46 pm ET

It is customary in Japan to bow to everybody, not just the emperor. It's like shaking hands in western cultures. Perhaps if some of you didn't have your heads so far up your butts you'd know more about Japanese culture. Our President's respect for other cultures has been a great asset to the standing of the U.S. internationally, unlike Yosemite Sam, who alienated just about every one except England.

Dennis   November 14th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

Dear Scott in Tucson, want more troops in Afghanistan so bad, just sign up. Nothing stopping you. You can leave tomorrow if time is of the essence. They can always use one more piece of cannon fodder. I know, it is always so much easier if it is somebody else or their loved one.

ThinkAgain   November 14th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

Love the way posters here say things like "probably," then present a line of thinking as fact that they just made up.

You Limbaugh-Beckies are totally incapable of thinking – for yourselves, let alone at all!

ThinkAgain   November 14th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

To Scott in Tucson: It's not a "simple" decision to send troops into Afghanistan.

Keep in mind that Bush and Cheney sat on that request for 8 months. Why? Because they knew it was a difficult decision, and they decided instead of manning up and making it, they'd wait until after the election.

You know, in case things went badly, it would once again remind Americans just how incompetent they were. It would have reflected badly on them, then-candidate McCain and the GOP in general.

Lovely, wasn't it, the way Bush played politics with our soldiers' lives?

Ted van Tol   November 14th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

Well SCOTT there is still a lot to apologize for!

The napalm in Vietnam,
the killing in South and Midle America by deadesquadrons instructed by the CIA,
the support off Sadam Hussein against Iran,
the support of the Taliban in the 90ties,
the lies to start a war in Iraq

How many innocent people, children, woman and elderly people, has died during these actions and is anyone brought to justece for that?

Why do you use a double standard every time, is the life of an
American superior above the lives of others in this world?
For the almighty we are all the same!

Ted van Tol, The Netherlands

ThinkAgain   November 14th, 2009 1:25 pm ET

Making a bow to a Japanese person is a sign of respect – our equivalent of a firm handshake.

Nothing more, nothing less.

People who think otherwise just hate the President and will say anything to slam him.

Lynne   November 14th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

Islanderate: A slight bow in Japan is the same as a handshake in America. Those of you in the "bubble" that America can go it alone in a global world are out of touch.

Scott, Tucson: So are you going to volunteer or send your relatives to Afghanistan without any strategy or goals just more fodder for roadside bombs?? Even McCrystal's plans stated that increased troops requires a credible, trusted gov't.

Sp sad that the same people have nothing in life except to sit at theor computer to write ill informed, hate filled comments about the President.

This guy is a disgrace to our nation. He goes to Japan and talks about 'FIRST PACIFIC PRESIDENT'. What is it? Last time he went to Germany and said that he is 'World Citizen'. He was elected as our president and he cannot deliver. He thinks that talking big in japan and Asia, he can get back his credibility. First of all he does not know what to do. He goes and gives a big speech but next moment the speech will have another tone. He is a joker and it is time to throw him our earlier than usual. He is now bring ths GITMO circus to NY. He is behind all this rhetoric and he wants to talk about the last 8 years of Georoge W. Bush. What about his one year in office until now?

juliet hartford ct   November 14th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

i would like to say to all the nay sayers...shut up...because the republicans was in office we act like we are the only country in the world and we can do things all by ourselves, if we alienate every country and when the united states gets in a world of trouble...we have an old sayer no man is an island and no man stands alone...if america would humble ourselves and make some friends ..when we are in dire straits....other countries will not turn up their noses up at us when we need help...so unless you get a daily briefing from the all the dept and you are president of the united states...we need to close our mouths and let him do his job we hire him to do.

Annie, Atlanta   November 14th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

islanderata – was it a "submissive bow," or a sign of respect? I would hope the President of the United States was fully briefed on how to respond to these foreign dignitaries, and would do so accordingly. But that's just me.

Tim   November 14th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Obama says we shouldn't act stupidly when discussing the Fort Hood terrorist.

He's such a pathetic apologist that he deserves zero respect. Let's make Fort Hood and the NY terrorist trials into what they should be, a giant circus. Until those in charge start to take these people for what they are, the scum of the earth, I refuse to take anything they say or do about the situation seriously. I'll treat everything they do like a 3-ring circus, because that is what they have made it.

Kung Foo   November 14th, 2009 12:21 pm ET

Hey there little miss "Islanderata," why you so upset 'bout Obama bowing to the Emperor? Mr President Bush himself bowed to Hitler on a daily basis. There policies were nearly identical: one supreme white race, one man in charge of everything, ultra-nationalist, no room for democracy or dissent from the citizenry. At least Obama gets and deserves respect from world leaders and honors other cultures. The only friend Bush had while in power was PM Tony Blair, who paid a heavy price for listening to Bush's insane ideas and policies.

TS Central NY   November 14th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

Did it ever occur to anyone here that bowing in Japan is the equivalent
of a hand shake over here in the USA? Please keep up these brilliant
comments.

Perhaps this would be a good time to take your head out of the sand, or wherever else it is, and recognize that in Japanese culture, a bow is the equivalent of the American handshake. It does not imply submission of any sort, it is a greeting.

Chloe in Chatsworth, CA   November 14th, 2009 12:13 pm ET

God, you Obama haters are tiresome. Do you guys ever take a break from seething?

Carol   November 14th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Let's just call his bowing to the Emperor of Japan, showing humility and manners.

Jarge Bush   November 14th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

I wish Amuricans would stop blaming Amurica's problems on me. When I was in charge, I was the decider, but not the thinker. It was my close handler and friend Karl Rove who made me do all of the things I did. Lord knows, I was not smart enough to create a Power Point presentation about WMD and brief them at the UN. Shucks, if it wasn't for Rove I woulda never been president of anything. He was one of those nerdy type studyers in school, so he had the edjukation to make me popular with the right people, who knew if I was elected, I would let them keep on not paying corporate taxes while the middle-class takes it up the ol' caboose. Yes I said to bomb Iraq for attacking us on Sept 11 even though they had nothing at all to do with the attacks. I'm still amazed that we were able to pull off that one. I went on TV and convinced 300 million people that Iraq was resonsible for 9/11 while evryone knows most of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia (golly gee, it took me 8 years to finally lern to spel that word "Saudi Arabia"). Well, I gotta go now, I smell my angus steaks burning on the grill. Dern that Cheney, I told him a thousand times to stop burning the steaks! But he won't listen. Heck, he still thinks he's the president even after I told him our days are over.

Carol   November 14th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

Excellent speech, watched the whole thing on CNN. Thanks CNN. Couldn't help notice how well he was received, and no one throwing a hissy fit in the background from the Republicans.

Abdulazeez   November 14th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

That is his way of showing respect and that does not signify weakness. Rather than reading meaning into the man's action every time, you guys should just shut up and look for something useful to do.

Loup Garou 782   November 14th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Mr obama and his supporters are just proving to the world that we in the United States of America are bad people and we owe an apology to the world community for who we are. He was elected to provide that service and is doing well at the task. Wake up people he hates democracy, the constitution and Caucasians.

victim of republican greed   November 14th, 2009 11:51 am ET

What is a wingnut? So far, we know that they claim to be Christian, but turn their back on their fellow man. They are pro life, and yet, they are pro war. They are against taxes for the wealthy, but don't seem to mind if the middle class pays for the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. They want a smaller government, yet want government to control women's bodies. They are against government agencies, yet support Halliburton/Blackwater/Xe. They claim they want to support the constitution, but are against anyone who is different from them to have the same protections afforded by bill of rights and the constitution. They have no faith in the American judicial system, or our elected officials in congress and the president. They are always complaining jobs have been sent overseas, yet they are anti union. They are also supporters of the news networks of a foreign billionaire whose sole purpose is to tear down President Obama, and do not believe in fact checking.

Impeach them all   November 14th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Hopefully when he lands in China, they Quarantine him there for the next 3 years, like they do some politicians. Since Obama is so eager to accept more money from China, they have nothing to lose, since he is already paid for. Like I said before, he may be President, but he is no Leader. Before 2012 elections, Obama will have many names. Obama the Submissive will probably the most used, along with Obama the Apologizer.

The Country voted for change, but they never said change for the better and you ended up with this guy. This Country needs to Impeach every single person running our Govenment and start over from scratch without the Corruption. Then we will have REAL Change in America

I thought Fox would give you wingnuts a day off. A simple request for 40,000 troops. The idiot from Texas dithered for 8 months and did not fill the request, leaving Obama to fill it in March. What was Bush waiting for? Oh yeah, he was completely ill equipped to be president.

Good grief!   November 14th, 2009 11:28 am ET

So sick of watching this talking head bobble from side to side reading his teleprompter. And teleprompter NEVER says anything concrete about anything. Yes, teleprompter, we know "that what happens in Asia has a direct effect on our lives at home."

Terry from West Texas   November 14th, 2009 11:12 am ET

I am an Obama supporter, but his Administration is neglecting a few of the most important issues. Regarding Asia, our business leaders – with the cooperation of Reagan, Bush (the good one), Clinton, and Bush (the other one) have sold America out. We are now deeply in debt to the largest Communist nation in the world – namely Red China. They led us into this disastrous global economy, which is based on long, fragile supply chains and which depend on our many of our enemies. They did this so they could get rich, and they did.

Now America can defend itself, but it can't feed itself, clothe itself, makes its own cars, make its own TV sets, make its own computers (all of which we invented), make its own medicines, or make many essential products. Conservatives wouldn't turn our armed forces over to the United Nations, but they turned our economy over to Communist China, middle eastern nations that really hate us and would like to see us all dead, and others.

Suppose middle eastern nations get together and decide not to sell us any more oil until we withdraw all our troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, Japan, and Europe. We would have to cave in. We can't live without oil (Jimmy Carter tried to warn us 30 years ago about this), and when gasoline hits $15.00 a gallon, we will toe the line believe me. What if China decides to cash in their debt unless we quit doing business with Latin America and buy all our merchandise from them? We would cave in.

Conservatism and America's CEOs haver stolen our economy and sold it to the lowest bidders.

not alone   November 14th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Fed Up   November 14th, 2009 11:02 am ET

China's Recent Sale of Jets to Pakistan - Is Obama Learning about Asia?   November 14th, 2009 10:38 am ET

USA gives 1.5 billion dollars in "aid" annually to Pakistan to feed its hungry and refugees, and to fight terrorists. Some of it probably was loaned by China to USA in the first place. Pakistan spends the "aid" to buy jets from China. So it's Chinese money going back to China. Hope President Barack Obama is learning about how "Global Trade" works in Asia during his trip to that part of the world!

Scott, Tucson   November 14th, 2009 10:34 am ET

Sounds like he's on another one of his world wind apology tours.
Odd that obama can fly off somewhere, make hasty meetings with other leaders but he just can't make a simple decision on a request for 40,000 more troops from the area commander in Afghanistan. What is he waiting for....2013?
